    Smt dominates

  • @NintendanGX
    @NintendanGX 2 роки тому +73

Pokemon got stale fast, and they're a chore to 100% complete. It's partially why I got into SMT in the first place.
It's more mature, the devs constantly improve the gameplay with each game by polishing what works and throwing away outdated mechanics to create the best turn-based combat system out there, its demon-fusion is addictive, and it allows the player the freedom to decide good from evil (with the exception being IV Apocalypse). SMT V also revolutionises the series with its Xenoblade-style open world, making the entire experience feel grand, and rewarding to explore.
Even though most Megaten games have an alignment system, most of their stories feel distinct and unique from one another. You're not going through the motions like you are in Pokemon, you're soaking it all in throughout your journey and answering questions/making choices honestly that'll determine where you stand during the finale. It makes them more replayable.
And as I stated before, completing any Pokemon game is a chore without a working trading option available and not missing out on some "special events". None of that shit flies in SMT. You can complete the Demonic Compendium without any external help, making the actual completion of the game more rewarding and fair on the player who wants to enjoy any one of these games as self-contained experiences.
Now I'm not saying anyone can't enjoy Pokemon. Plenty of people still do. I heard Black & White were where the series peaked, which is one generation above where I left off. But when so little is changed from game to game, and when they blatantly disrespect and waste the player's time, it gets old. And going for a casual playthrough doesn't do it for me either, because it's Pokemon, and its stories aren't engaging enough to make up for the rest of its shortcomings. The only games I can think of that gripped me this way were the Gamecube games, but they were spin-offs.
And not every JRPG needs to be dark in order to have a worthwhile story, but even then Pokemon's doesn't have anything of the sort to keep me going. It's the same song and dance every time, copy and pasted. Start your adventure, beat all the gyms, fight the baddies, save the legendary from the box art, fight the Elite 4, fight the Pokemon champion, the end. When nothing else about these games are doing it for me anymore, there has to be something more than this, or at least a compelling reason to do it all again for the 8th time. And when that doesn't work either, there's a big problem.
Compare that to SMT, where no one game's story or setting feels remotely the same. Sure, the alignments are there, but they're flexible enough to make the player question their actions from game to game. Maybe Law will be more appealing to you than Chaos in one game, and vice versa. Nocturne as even more complex alignments that make you really think about the consequences of joining them, and weigh your options. And each game poses these questions to you through different means. In SMT 1, Japan is caught in a demonic and nuclear war between its government and the US military, both influenced by Demons and Angels. In Strange Journey, Demons enact every sin mankind has caused back upon them, serving as a reflection of their worst aspects and a reminder of their failures. In IV, the beginning of the game misleads you into believing it takes place in a fantasy setting, only to reveal its connection to Tokyo and what became of that city. All of this is way more fascinating and exciting to experience than Pokemon's done-to-death, rigid, stale formula.

Totally with you! Mega Ten games take themselves quite seriously. Mainline Pokémon games have been skating by with the bare minimum for a while now.

    Extremely easy vs very hard
Simple game mechanic vs complex game mechanic
    Light-hearted vs dark
    For kids vs for adult
Cute monster designs vs scary demons from various mythologies
I never got into Pokemon, even during the 90s but SMT3 on PS2 got me hooked up immediately.

Pokemon's battling isn't quite simple, due to battles being 1v1s/2v2s you have to pick what mons to sacrifice or conserve. Certain abilities, moves and held items also spice up the complexity. Sadly most of these are never utilized because of how easy battles are and online battling being niche.

@@Shybe777 Pokemon battling darn easy compared to SMT series. I even borrowed Sword to check if there is anything meanigful new. The battle is still extremely easy. Beat the game in no time, tried some of those post games stuffs but got bored heavily after the main part is finished.

    • @Shybe777

@@guanyu210379 That's the main series games being easy and not the battling system. Pokemon Rejuvenation has an intense mode that can rival most SMT games in terms of difficulty. (assuming you don't just max EVs from the start otherwise early game would still be easy) The AI is consistent and took me a lot more attempts in comparison to my Nocturne hard run (although that's mostly just because Pokemon battles are fast paced and can get one sided easily)
Press turn is nice but the SMT AI plays questionably (hitting into your nullifications) sometimes especially in SMT V where essences turn any non-early game boss into a cakewalk (with exceptions like demifiend of course)
Either way I like both even if Pokemon has kinda fallen off a lot.

It's not about who is the best, is about what you like more to play.
I love SMT V but I play Pokemon since I was kid and I always had fun in every single game of Pokemon in main series, everyone can play both and love both like me.

This is kinda a unfair match up
It's like comparing breaking Bad to Peppa pig.
    One is directed towards kids,
And the other has a whole story, and characters as well as a overarching theme as a whole.
In short SMT wins by a mile lmao

I sometimes still see people who want an edgier and darker Pokémon game, and every time I do I'm like:
    "just play SMT lmao"
They're both games where the player recruits monsters or demons to fight alongside them in a turn-based battle system that revolves around exploiting enemies' elemental weaknesses.

I don't think pokemon or SMT are better, I think they are just different.
They both have different formulas, different combat and collecting mechanics and even audiences.
People feel like pokemon has gotten 'stale' because pokemon releases way more regularly,
And not a lot of people have actually played SMT, so it 'feels new'.
I am personally a fan of both series and I am looking forward to checking out pokemon bdsp and SMT V.

I agree it's different strokes and all but Pokémon isn't just tired, it's also regressed over time in noticeable ways like exposition, difficulty, music, etc. They add novelties for the sake of adding novelties like does anyone really care about cooking curry with Pokémon?
I like both series as well but in a versus match, I err towards SMT.

@@TheButtonMappers I like when they put little stuff that adds charm and personality to pokemons, do watching mons interacting with each other boosts your gameplay in anyway? No, but it does make the whole world feel more alive. Pokemon really needs to invest in this kind of stuff when they are so more focused on the small "cute pet" bits of the franchise than something more adult and serious like SMT.

Competitive pokemon is actually fun. I don't play smt out of spite of the playerbase, but yeah the actual game parts of pokemon have been on a downward spiral. The game is pushed to have a new mainline release every 3 years due to the size of the business and it harms the game more than anything else, besides the "infants play it" logic
