Lived here my whole life in a small town in central MN. It is true. People are nice to your face and talk shit when you leave the room. Makes you not trust anyone because you wonder how they really feel about you. People love stroking their ego about how great the state is when it's ok. I can make a decent living here and the cost of living is low but there is nothing to do for recreation, no good restaurants, just 5 bars in town that serve basic poorly cooked burgers. You are treated like a creep if you try to strike up a conversation with someone, the dating scene sucks if you are an average man that doesn't want to settle on a alcoholic cow that thinks she is God's gift to men. Fortunately I did find a great woman to start a family with but I can't say the same for other people I know. Existence here is actually pretty depressing. I don't connect at all with my fellow Minnesotans. If aren't an alcoholic it's impossible to have a social life
So true man. Living in Saint Paul sucks. It's exactly how you described central mn. Women will think you're a creep if you approach them here. They only talk to people they know and maybe to people they know as well. I refuse to settle on some cow that thinks she's hot because of all the simps giving her praise in MN. I am 42 and will be out of here by 50. I want to live and love life and MN is the worst place to do it.
2018 here. Just moved to Minnesota 6 months ago. Been looking for other people who went through the same experience. Glad to hear that I’m not the only one! This will be my temporary stay and get the hell out of dodge soon. Thanks all!
@Sam Smarter about physical health doesn`t mean smarter and healthier. Just healthier. Paris Hilton is smart about health, too. Dumb as a box of rocks all the same. Most Minnesotans are staunch antiintellectuals. Nothing smart about that.
it is rare to have someone born and raised in minnesota that is actually decent. but i got a real bitterness with a lot of these fellow native minnesotans, as i am also born and raised there. i hate the minnesota nice bs, it drives me nuts. tbh im hater when it comes to that shit. try making friends only for them to have them shun you completely and not have a decent conversation on whatever issue. no instead they just become passive aggressive and block you.
Just found this channel. This may be a long comment. I lived in Minnesota for 12 years. Everything that the people who hate Minnesota said is true. The people are provincial, unfriendly, passive-aggressive, terrified of anyone disagreeing about anything. There's nothing wrong with being provincial, but the pretense that they are sophisticated is ridiculous. I grew up on the East Coast and have lived in a number of places, including below the Mason-Dixon line, and traveled all over the world. I have never heard so much racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and misogyny as I heard in Minnesota. Many people were surprised about the George Floyd murder. I wasn't. About Minneapolis. Minnesotans pretend it's a big city and compare it to New York. Seriously, they compare it to New York. Minneapolis is a hick town with pretensions of being a big city. When I arrived there, my wife and I, being foodies, decided to check out the food culture. There isn't any. All the food trends that were popular in the New York metro ten years earlier were the hottest things in food there. Also, white boys wearing their baseball hats sideways was big. That was also ten years out of date. Some time ago I saw a guy reply on a web site to someone's criticism of Minneapolis as a hick town. The MN defender said, they had "the most theater seats of any American city after New York" and "the most hipsters in the country". He was serious. My first year in Minnesota my wife and I went to the state fair. The big thing they brag about at the state fair is that you can get many varieties of food on a stick. Yes, they brag about that like it's amazing. I was talking to a guy at the info booth at the fair and he told me he had joined the Navy to see the world. I said that was interesting, what did he see. He said he went to Subic Bay, apparently the only place outside the US that he went. I asked him what he thought of Subic and he said, "I don't know. I didn't leave the boat." Joined the Navy to see the world; never got off the boat. True Minnesota. The thing that struck me the hardest besides the racism was when the bombing took place at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. That was the big story in Minnesota for a couple of hours and then they went on to more important things: hockey and...well...hockey. The next day the local news took an interest in the BM bombing again when they found Minnesotans who were at the marathon to interview. News doesn't matter in Minnesota unless it's about Minnesota. Did I say something about being "insular"? I'll cut it off here. I could go on a very long time about the crappiness of that place. Minnesotans always assume you left because of the weather. I could have stood the weather, but those people are the worst. Work kept me there and work got me out. Thank goodness for the latter.
Bye bye. Sorry you couldn't handle it. We don't pussy foot around. If you don't like it move on. You don't have to live here. Move to a dogshit state like Alabama and then come back and complain.
I have the misfortune of living in the south “metro”, you have to call it “the metro” here, for 8 out of the last 10 years. I was thankfully out of town for the last 2 years. It was refreshing to go to another state and meet friendly people. I saw women that actually wore some makeup and dressed with a bit of style. That were attractive and not way overweight. Guys who were like, hey let’s go out for a beer. It was good to get back to meeting and seeing normal people.
I I was born and raised in Minnesota for 38 years I lived there. I loved Minnesota but I couldn't stand being part of a democratic state I moved across the border into Wisconsin and it never felt so good. Going on 10 years in Wisconsin and I watch Minnesota like I'm on the sideline and it's a joke. Minnesota gets smart get rid of these people in Minneapolis that govern your state. And then you have a Somalian as a representative for the state of Minnesota? My dad is rolling in his grave
I am fortunate to have the ability tof never having to go to Minnesota again. Visited once in 90's and wasn't impressed with anything I saw. Stayed away until this year when I drove across the Canadian border through International Falls and was pulled over at crossing by Minnesota conservation officer and told "I know you are not from Minnesota and don't know this, but you are not allowed to trailer your boat with your drain plug in." Rather than informing me and having me remove it, I was given a citation. My gosh, I had only driven in Minnesota for less than 50 yards. Two weeks later I was mailed a notice that I was required to take an online invasive species class, which I did. No other mention of fine or any other requirement. My thought was they seemed reasonable to help with the invasive species issue. One month later I receive a notice from the Minnesota court stating I now owed a fine and late fee for the infraction of the law that they are aware nobody from out of state would know about. When I contacted the court and explained what had happened the said they knew nothing about the invasive species class and all they knew was I had to pay the "We don't want out of state visitor" fine or set up a court date to dispute it. Right, like I am going to travel 3 states away to go to court for a $140 fine. I chose to sent the S-hole state the $140 and count my blessings that I would never have to enter that "state" again. Sympathies to those who haven't the ability to evade this place.
Lack of exposure esp people in the country. When I opened a checking account at a famous local bank, the banker asked me to pick the design of my new credit card. So, I picked 49er design (where I come from). The banker stared at me and said angrily "Do you live there?" He expected me to pick the Vikings design credit card. After 1 year, I am getting used to being taunted and shouted rudely at. I walked in the park the wrong way temporarily just to look at the tulips and got shouted at loudly, I nearly cried. I went to a game of bowling for the first time in MN and the group next to me was angry with me for moving while they were playing. The whole group of 10 stared angrily at me and started taunting me. Just because I did not know their tradition and they did not have a gut to communicate to me their expectations like civilized human beings! They think they are courteous but if they do not get what they expect from tourists or transplants or new people from other states or countries, they rudely shout at! I learned to shut up.. as if I am dealing with military regime. All I need to say from now on is that Minnesota is a perfect heaven and people are all perfect angels, or else I will be told "get out of here!"
God I hate that shit. I've lived here my whole life, and I can safely say that I've experienced just about everything this state has to offer. I'm sure Minnesota would be much nicer if the people could simply pull their head out of their ass and stop with the stupid "Minnesota Nice" garbage. People here are cowards, liars, two faced and will try to cut you down any chance they get. I hate the fucking Vikings. The only thing they're good for is demonstrating how to choke. And everyone around you just adores them. It's ridiculous.
And what's more is, everyone seems to celebrate mediocrity, because it's what everyone here has always known. Food? Bland usually, but not disgusting...just ok. Sports? Just ok. Recreation? Just ok. And like you pointed out, god help you if you go against the grain even a little in public. You'll try to go bowling or fishing or to a restaurant or anything to break up the monotony, and there's always the group of people who are "regulars here" and stare daggers at you the whole time you dare do anything in "their" establishment. Or, if you're like me, you'll walk into almost any public area in the state and find yourself in a mob of diehard Vikings fans, and the game is on every single screen in the building, and if you try to have any conversation other than "duhhh da Vikings are great, dontcha know" you'll be alienated and shoved aside. This all being said there are normal, reasonable and genuinely nice people here...you just really gotta look for them.
Same LOL! I tried to get a debit card for a team that wasn’t from Minnesota and they guy was like, we don’t have cards with other team’s logos on them. I thought to myself you have to be joking.
I’ve lived in Minnesota going on 7 months and also really observant and already considering moving to another state. Minnesota is gorgeous and I feel safe here. It’s the people that make Minnesota ugly. I don’t get how you can come from such a great state that has a very good reputation especially on the quality of life here, and be so negative and nasty and use the term MN nice as your excuse to justify it. The food here is bad and very bland as well. I’m originally from Los Angeles, CA and even the ritzy people in Beverly Hills don’t act like this. Is it the snow that caused these people to be so cold?
soberpunk insult you? Just because I’m confronting doesn’t mean I’m trying to argue, it’s called communication. Maybe Minnesotans should get out more and actually communicate with other people like they used to do 20-30 years ago. Family and friends are definitely a big deal no matter where you come from. But there’s a difference between that and just being plain nasty. Seems like everyone tries to make the biggest deals out of the most simplest things in Minnesota.
soberpunk ah I can’t say your right I live here and it’s imigrants and blacks are nicer then the Minnesota natives yeah... it’s the people that been here are assholes but hey I’m from Florida we’re more assholes get in our face we’ll beat the living dogshit out of you go to jail then do it again we don’t care you guys do🤣🤪
soberpunk Hey tool, you’re saying the exact same thing every other Meannesotan says when confronted with opposition to Minnesota. Guess what? In the rest of the states, people aren’t so anal retentive and get so offended when someone criticizes where they live. You act all high and mighty talking about how you stick with family and old friends..but it’s no wonder all you Meannesotans say and do just that. No one outside of your cult wouldn’t tolerate your insufferableness. The rest of the country is starting to notice what a joke the social life in Minnesota is. If you guys don’t keep your egos in check, you could very end up being the next laughingstock of America soon. And you guys couldn’t deal with that too well lol...I mean, look how you respond when someone simply criticizes Minnesota!
Yeah...sorry for yer crap experience but everything you said is true. I’m still amazed how arrogant & yet so disillusioned they are about the people that live here. I think there great Branders though. They knew they had to do something about there social crap P.R. “Hey kids, it’s Mn. Nice.” It really is like being back in junior high 🤫
I agree completely. went to high school in the cities moved south for college and after graduation took a job in the walleye capital of the world (retarded) and lasted six months of slut shaming (virgin btw) and torture because I was the outsider, nobody gave a shit about who I was. I decided I had to leave after a young boy killed himself and the town treated it like newsworthy gossip. the only nice person I met was a cafe owner from Canada who was an advocate for suicide prevention. funny eh
I live in Minnesota and I have a question: Do people in other states, like, actually do things with their lives? Besides go out to the bars and talk about other times they went out to the bars? Week after week, month after month, year after year. For years. Not stopping. Ever. Constantly bringing up that time they got so shitfaced downtown that they threw their phone against a brick wall, smashing it into a million pieces because the screen wouldn't work, while other drunkards cheered, 7 years after it happened. Or how about that other guy who spent literally his whole paycheck downtown the day said paycheck was given to him. Followed by complaining the entire shift the next morning of how he feels like total shit, and now has to pick up overtime hours everyday the coming week to make rent. Followed up the following week of how said rent was made through the shittiest overtime filled week ever, so he decided to celebrate that Friday night by going out to the bars and blowing his remaining money on getting shitfaced again. Followed by yet another shift of wondering why he felt like total shit again for some reason, but was a least able to make rent. This is how people live in other states, right?
Wtf do minnesotans do? other than hunt and fish??? Oh you guys talk about the crops coming in, and the weather. Fucking exciting!! The only nice thing about MN is Duluth. That's about it. You people have no culture, or class. Just bunch of far right, and far left morons.
And on top of that. Everyone in mn is a social retard. Just awkward, and hard to speak to. Especially if you're a person of color. Then it's super awkward
@@srod0311 ....I dunno? I don’t think Mn. allows anyone w/ a conservative bent. It could make the rugged soy boys cry & the butchy girls, to toss in there purple pride towels 😂
I married a native MN and some of her extended family members still remind me of the following: I'm not from MN I'm not Norwegian I'm not Lutheran. I lived in NC for a little bit before settling in MN and the differences in how people are socially is jarring. I have made friends here...(mostly from out state) but getting to know people in the metro area is a struggle.
@@duffdastuff8071 About 10 years ago I had enough and refuse to attend events with these certain family members. It's pretty much several people sitting inside on a nice day..I figured I'd rather be outside riding my bike or working on my cars....and not have snide comments thrown my way. My wife sees it. Understands why I don't want to go.
When I 1st moved to Minnesota I was only 18 years old and was in no way prepared for the barrage of negative comments that were thrown my way. With more life experience and significant travel I have realized that you just can't fix stupid. I do my best to ignore it but damn it gets under my skin.
Yep, I've lived here all my life and this state is horrible. You'll say "excuse me" to people or "sorry" and they do just give you this mean stare which basically says, "I don't care" or "I'm not in your way" or whatever. It's awful. Just be lucky you don't have to date here. It's a horrible thing to have to do, especially in 2019.
@Abdikarim Abdi And they trapped me in the system and made it so if I got rich I would lose my medical insurence and I would have to pay for my medication my self so that I would never be able to escape the system too
@Abdikarim Abdi Yup they stare all the time and some of my group home staff are african american and people are rude to my staff when they take me to the store to buy my sodas and coffee
Don’t you hate it when you walk into a business and they just give off a weird vibe, or when people just wanna instigate over spill milk? That’s MN nice
I'm literally ashamed to be a native here, life really does suck there if you're not in the cult. When you go to school with them (at least where I live), they'll all have already known each other through church, family connections, or doing cute little sports together since they were like 2. So, when you try to make friends with them, they won't take you seriously unless you act exactly like they do. Like he said, it's a literal cult. If you don't do every little thing with them, if you don't show up to every social gathering, they will block you out. Their liberalism is also so fake. They act as though they actually believe in "everyone deserves equality," and then they'll proceed to only talk to their clique from high school. We're a state of Karens, like everybody's mom is a teacher and their dad was probably the school football coach or something. Even if you make friends with any of these people, they are going to be passive aggressive and rude to you no matter what. So.. what is even the point of living there.. Seriously get out while you can. However, the good 10% that aren't apart of the Minnesota cult and live there are actually pretty cool people... The difficulty is finding them. Just move to New York or something, sure they're all assholes, but at least they aren't fake as heck.
I moved there 7 months ago from Colorado from and I agree with every statement you said. It seems cliques over there. Im glad that I have family members living there, making it tolerable.
From NYC, lived in MN for about 4 years now since 2015. It's not THAT bad, just boring. It's hard to make genuine friends out here. You better get your conceal carry ASAP, Alot of dumb shit goes on in the twin cities, only if you tolerate it. Word of Advice, if you come here from an expensive state, get your money and bounce. It's a good come up state
I'm from New York and I used to interact with some people from Meannesota online, and it drove me insane and made me depressed, these people were sadistic sociopaths, I had a crush on this one girl who I found out shot her boyfriend and claimed he was abusive, but she mocked a lot of people who showed empathy and compassion (like me) and she only lied to get out on plea bargain. I am disgusted.
even heard someone in the midwest admit, when someone in MN decides they dont like you, they never change their mind. if you get in a scuffle with someone from new york, chances are you'll figure out it was a misunderstanding and it'll at least end friendly
Let the weirdos here B they crazy here sad to say some people from my hometown became Minnesotans They forgot where they came from I will never let this place change me
I dunno about sadistic sociopaths, but know they have a special kind of cringey insecurity which probably could lead them there. I’ll never understand there costly, sanctimonious, white guilt & smug sense of false humility or desire to vote in corrupt Illhan Omar 2X’s 🙄 If you loved Junior High it’s your kinda town! HOWEVER if I told you I have two personalities, you’d run, right, because your NORMAL(ish) THE TWIN CITIES ❄️ It’s most the bipolararest state in the middle 🚑 💊💊💊
lmao at all you outsiders getting butthurt about not making friends in MN (yeah dumbass MN aint for everyone, you basically have to be born here and have friends/fam to have a great time. NY is known for whining, so go home and whine there
All these complaints about "liberal" Minnesota. I was told the Minneapolis cops were racist when I moved there in - 1978! If you ever talked to a POC you would know the high school graduation rate for black students is the same as Pensacola Florida, which is abysmal. The UN did a report that called out the state for being incredibly racist. I was shunned at work for being an unmarried woman with no children. I worked with a handful of people of color and one openly gay person over 36 years, at most of the big employers. Even after a videotaped murder committed by a police office, people are whining about crime? Almost the entire city of St. Paul and the Phillips neighborhood and all of North Minneapolis are crime ridden. They are also slums. The Metropolitan Council uses a seven word euphemism (classic Minnesota bs) but several years ago they did a report on the slums. Not too surprisingly slums breed crime, regardless of race, creed, color and religion. Meannesota is the direct descendent of the Scandinavian peasantry who settled the state in the 1800s. They were clannish, judgemental, deeply suspicious of outsiders, puritanical about sex and indifferent to art, education and culture. You mix that with American capitalism and you get present day Minnesota.
I had no idea how racist MN is till I moved there. Also homophobic, anti-Semitic, and misogynistic. I heard their garbage every day. As a white man, they probably felt free to say that junk to me. I grew up in NJ in a community that was about half Black and Puerto Rican and I rarely heard stuff like that. MN is disgusting and it's not because of the weather.
It really depends on who you are. If you like to keep to yourself, you'll love it here. People are nice when they interact with you then they go to their cocoons and leave you alone. If you like to make genuine friendships, then yeah, it's bad. I do agree though that there is a general undertone that is mean and vindictive. When you deal with people while not interacting with them face-to-face, you see their true colors. Driving is a good example. After living here for a while you feel a moral obligation to teach people how to be truly nice and genuine. It's a novelty to many of them.
We are all different breeds of people, mn had a conpletely different type of person and culture than nearly every other state. Minnesota nice does suck, but it is how we are raised.
That’s fine, but Minnesotans need to stop getting so butt hurt when someone criticizes the social life in their state. Of course transplants aren’t going to like being ignored, excluded, and the other darker traits of “Minnesota Nice”. I live in Asheville NC, and I don’t get butt hurt when someone criticizes Asheville or NC. In fact, some people even laugh and empathize when someone expresses that around here.
Hmm...that cop out kinda sounded a bit like the Nuremberg Argument. "We were raised that way" is not an excuse for being a flying monkey for unrepentent mean spirited "cool kids" to continue to run "their" state like it`s a brainwashing cult. I refused to be brainwashed by my Meanesota nice parents. You could have, too.
I was so happy when I voted with my feet in 2018 and never looked bad. Horrible place to live, the most unfriendly people I've ever encountered, and I've lived all over the US.
I’ve moved to MN for college and stayed here since 1993. I’m a person of color. People don’t ask you any personal questions, no interest to get to know you, but if you ask them, they start sharing, a lot! One way convo. People do stick with their childhood friends and relatives here and don’t let you get into their circle! They don’t invite you back either. So, finally, I said, “fuck it!” I mind my business and do my own thing, alone. My white Neighbors don’t say hi unless I say first and it gets old! They don’t even remember my name after 20 some years and I’m tired of repeating. Most people are strange here!!! Also, horrible driving manner. But according to the climate change, MN is a safer place to be.
I'm originally from Pennsylvania, yeah PA has its issues for sure, but natives from Wisconsin and Minnesota seem like they have a huge chip on their shoulders and are very petty and rude. They always almost run into you and in the way, like you are an alien or something. Only a few people I've met here are genuinely kind and welcoming. Overall these states have a lot to offer, but most people just can't deal with living anywhere else and would get confronted by their passive aggressive behavior. I'm looking forward to getting out of Wisconsin.
Lol that suprises me a lot, Minnesota nice is a joke, but were not mean, if you really think were mean then do yourself a favor and talk to people in ur salty state
@@hayduan4098 Wow, you really are living up to your Minnesotan reputation here. He has an opinion and you insult him for it. How are you not mean, again?
I have lived in MN for 8 long years. My company asked me if I wanted to go to a long term job in PA. I said sing me up! Get me out of MN for a while. The people in Pittsburgh are much nicer and the women are better looking overall with a lot less attitude. Guys I worked with in PA would actually invite me out for beers after work. That NEVER HAPPENED in MN. In fact guys would make plans while I was standing there, part of the conversation and not ask me to go. Such scared insular people it’s sad.
@@sniper60605 Very true. Minnesotans are very socially inept persons. Even on a job, they do not know how to introduce you to others, and will exclude you from other introductions if you are from "somewhere else." I've worked at this "nursing home" for awhile as "part of the admin team" and I'm supposed to think highly of this MD who's been director of the centers for 30 plus years (read: old, aged, and not forward thinking). I've never been introduced to him, and he's in the place once a week. So, to hell with him and other staff members. I have no respect for them at all. I just ignore their socially inept and insular ways.
I totally agree. I'm moved here from the East and this place is awful. The people are mean, vicious is the correct term. They are prideful, intitled, judgemental people. Time and again I run into ruse or passive, aggressive people. Maybe its the long winters that make them mean.
soberpunk Look I don’t know who you are but Get the heck off here ! Your causing trouble for no reason get off troll ! Nobody cares ! If your going to say some thing I don’t want to hear all this passive aggressive crap it’s not normal Normal people don’t act this way
Funny, I found people from east coast are cold, one of the most rudest, meanest people I ever met especially NY, CT. Minnesota sucks though but slightly better than east coast!
Minnesotan here. Not gonna fight the video necessarily, just kinda baffled because I hear people from all over say that they "wish people were as nice here (Minnesota) as they were at home." Never really dealt with the clan-esque issues, but the comments section of this video does make it apparent that people have had negative interactions with Minnesotans before. Just interesting to me.
Have you ever heard the saying, "Minnesotans will give you directions anywhere but their house?" I think it's mostly people that try to make friends with us. Most Minnesotans are fine with small exposures that don't involve anything personal, but if you try to go further, they definitely get weird about it.
I am a 19 year old who has lived in MN his entire life until a couple months ago where I moved away for college. I didn't really know why... but I just knew I had to get out of there. It's insane! Like so many people just can't even realize that there is a world outside of the Twin Cities. Also, yes Summer is too hot and humid. Fall is allergies galore. And, as someone who is used to it Winter isn't that bad, actually. Spring is also allergies. And, Minnesota nice isn't real. Minnesota passive aggressive is very much though. And, it's so messed up. But, even though I don't like it there. I feel safe there! (And, yes, that probably has something to do with the cult mentality.) And, even though the population of the Twin Cities isn't even that high in population it feels so damn crammed. The taxes are too high. And EBT and WIC are way too generous. As someone who worked at a grocery store I can attest to this. People have $40 to waste on cigs and then they use their EBT for pop and hot pockets and whatnot. And, yes there definitely are nice people here. But, yes, many people are people who have to virtue signal 24/7 and show off their moral superiority. Any way, everyone. Have a great day!
When 6 out of 12 months are indoor weather and you have to be cooped up with up to 4 other people at all times, you learn how to settle things with out killing each other.
No. Its not settling. Its bottling up. Putting a fake smile on. There ARE times for that. But im sick of having people never say anything to me about something im doing that may bother them. Then dissapearing.
yes, but at least they are honest about it instead of deniging it and being super fake. I'd rather be an open honest asshole than be a backstabbing, gossiping, closet narcissist, that secretly plans ways to ruin people's lives who I don't like. Not every minnesotan is like this, just the majority.
I don't know, I've lived here for a few years now. I'm original from Green Bay, WI. I have to say, the culture isn't so different, but it's definitely not what you'd expect from a city its size. There is definitely a level of introversion, and people born/raised here are as passive aggressive as some individuals claim. There is also quite the level of insecurity with the state's belonging, and being 'relevant'. You'll honestly find this most places in the midwest, save Chicago/Milwaukee area. The introversion can make it VERY difficult for a transplant. However, MPLS/St Paul does have a lot to offer. Excellent educational facilities, globally recognized medical facilities, and a strong economy. Cost of living isn't *so* bad. Rural MN, while gorgeous in some areas, is an absolute shithole when it comes to social culture, I will agree there. Stay in the cities, and even then you'll feel some of the passive aggressive nature, but it offers enough to overlook it. Fair amount of transplants as well.
@@KristaldeauCityLights Dude, I've run into that a shit load and I'm born and raised here. It's nice to be vindicated on this and learn that it's not just me that's experienced this. Lol
……Minnesotans are big into social appearances. Watching them work a room with there phony home spun schtick is hilarious if just not down right depressing while reiterating every bad cliche…
I just arrived today in sauk center, while i just kindly asked worker, what time the pool were open on weekends. She replied didn't knew, and went go asked, which she then simply told me needed a guest card, which could had just told me, the time it opened in weekends. Notice the passive agression?
Michigan and Illinois are less friendly than Minnesota (Detroit and Chicago areas only). I live in MN, MO, MI, IL, OK, and LA. Louisiana has the most friendly people in my opinion.
OK, I moved to Minnesota (St. Paul) in 1996 from Connecticut, and I have to say think you're overreacting by trying to extrapolate a theory of everything from your loud neighbors. Do you still live here? If so, why?
hate to break it to you, but lots of things have changed, both culturally and technologically, since 1996. even an astute individual such as yourself can figure that. You are the problem
Now THAT is right :) Minnesota is a great place to live, so many lakes, great life quality, great schools, great health care, and opportunity is amazing also
Like most Fly Over States they’re awesome if you have a family but your not going to be invited to the cool adults club if yer not breeding. They’ll gleefully give you a gentle reminder that you don’t belong 🤫
Lived in South Minneapolis for most of my life. It was a virtual culture shock when I moved up to the burbs. People actually strike up convos with you in South. Da burbs and outstate MN? HA AHA HA
I dont know, my wife born and raised in Minnesota says this primarily only applies to the Twin Cities area and the rest of Minnesota is fine, weather aside. Iv been there once, I thought the people were incredibly nice compared to where I came from in Johnson County Kansas.
Mn. definitely has its ability to make a descent 1st impression (especially in the summer, when everyones off there s.a.d. meds) it’s just not a sustainable one 💊
Rural MN is just as passive aggressive and cutthroat. They just tend to be less liberal and more conservative. I should know, I've lived in St. Cloud. Miserable place, miserable people. And MEAN.
Interesting insight. I don't have any issue with being proud about your hometown (I lived in another city famous for its insistence on tradition for a while and observed a similar insular, parochial pride), but for me matters become problematic when said pride is predicated on educational attainment/a "progressive" cultural mindset, which contradicts what the OP terms "Meannesota", an apparent attachment among many locals to a social system that fundamentally espouses a more conservative viewpoint. I would likely not have chosen to move here if it were not for all the literature bloviating about what a great, progressive place this is to live, ranking high on quality of life surveys, etc. In many ways it is, but I have not found it to be progressive ideologically in the way coastal areas of the US are, which I think confuses a LOT of folks who move here from the coasts. By contrast, the states surrounding MN seem to have no issue with their Midwestern identity. I have not seen a lot of literature/jabbering on about how Milwaukee or Fargo or Des Moines is the next Brooklyn (I don't doubt some blowhard copywriter is playing that angle, but it'd be harder to find). I would not choose to live in Iowa or Wisconsin or the Dakotas because I believe them to be too different for me to acclimate to. I bet the majority of people there are wonderful and that is no slight on them, rather an acknowledgment that there are some folks I just won't get along with and it's best I leave them alone. Had I (and I wager most transplants) known about the downside of Minnesota culture before moving here, or had the booster-penned literature (and pro-Minnesota bloggers/commenters) been more forthright about this, I wouldn't have bothered moving here. Why be miserable if you know you can avoid it? To conclude, if Minnesotans want transplants to stop complaining about what the OP calls "Meannesota", they need to be more consistent in their marketing and more openly honest about the shortcomings of their cultural system. Other places I've lived in are more forthcoming about their drawbacks and as such are likely to attract and retain people who "fit in" with the culture. Areal boosters have irresponsibly set unrealistic expectations of the place. There is nothing wrong with openly embracing tradition and a more conservative mindset (I am not a conservative, but I like to know who I'm dealing with before entering into a relationship). However, I implore Minnesotans who abide by "Meannesota" to live up to their ideals: stop insisting on the need for others to assimilate to your culture, be clearer about your expectations, understand and be OK with people who disagree with your culture, and be more accepting of other viewpoints. Failing that, you will continue to hear it from disgruntled transplants who are calling you out for your hypocrisy.

No, he's right. I'm a military brat, been many places growing up, but I ended up in Minnesota for the last 4 years. I legit thought people here are racist at first because of the way they treated me. Then when my (white) boyfriend moved here from Nebraska, he also got treated like he's an alien. He has a great, outgoing, humble and social personality...thought maybe he'd help me make friends here with his charismatic charm. We're used to genuine warmth and kindness...Minnesotans are just not warm and they are fake their kindness. We've only met a small handful of people here who treat us like we're human beings. The rest are rude, snippy, fake, self absorbed and passive aggressive. We generally find if people refuse to acknowledge it, then they're probably a native Minnesotan who is guilty of fitting the stereotype. Yes, people are individuals and I hate stereotypes as much as anyone, but by God I have never felt so unwelcome in any place I've ever gone. I spent half my time here thinking something must be wrong with me, spent many nights awake in bed trying to figure out what I did to get such cold treatment that day, or why when I try to participate in a conversation, I get pushed out and ignored. Was I trying too hard? Trying not enough? What can I do to change myself? Then I realized, trying to interact with Minnesotans will drive you as insane as living with someone who is emotionally toxic. They are so passive aggressive yet they put on this fake nice mask, so you're left thinking you're the problem...you gaslight yourself on their behalf because how could a population of people all have the same cold reaction to you when you simply said "hi" with a warm smile? That just doesn't happen...there's something very strange about Minnesotan people, and it's not good.

I grew up here too and I definateley agree most of minnesota is cultist, including rural. Minnesota is an ugly state. The ugliest part is the people and their delusional bubble, next is the worst gnats and mosquitos in the country, ensuring you can't enjoy the 2 warm, non-raining months here out of the year. Next is it's a big ugly swamp with nearly no solid ground. I can't think of a single good thing about Minnesota. While other states may not be perfect, they all at least have something good about them. Minnesota also prides it's self on being one of the most expensive places to live in the country and delusionally say they pay for the great quality of life there. Minnesota life is shitty as hell compared to almost all other states. You pay a shit ton in taxes and child care is way over proiced. They have way too many laws to prevent anyone from possibly doing anything fun. The only thing your allowed to do in minnesota is drink, ride bicycles, and go shopping. Everything else is against the law. A DNR is out of control here and even stopped my daughter from catching frogs. Yes, you even have to obtain a permit to catch frogs in MN. What does that tell you! If you didn't grow up here and weren't born in the cult, I suggest getting the hell out before they extract all your money and well being, then you get stuck in this shithole the rest of your life. Lastly, I know some Minnesotan will chime in to say how great it is here and they have live here their whole life. Minnesotans love to talk about how great they are!
Malkingchun first you have to show it. I know you MN folks just demand shit to be spoonfed to you on a regular basis but you have to give respect to get it.

I didn't leave the boat."
Joined the Navy to see the world; never got off the boat.
This is so true, all of it. As a someone from NYC and who has also traveled I noticed they are so offended and butthurt here

My complaint with Minnesota (from my experience) is there's nothing to do unless you're in MSP. There's two things to do otherwise, drink and fish.
@soberpunk It wouldn't be so bad if I was 21, at least then I can get smashed without it being a crime.

Thank you. After 39 years here, I am hoping I get out soon.

The difficulty is finding them.

lmao at all you outsiders getting butthurt about not making friends in MN (yeah dumbass MN aint for everyone, you basically have to be born here and have friends/fam to have a great time.
💯% H 2 The YES BARNHARDT NAILED IT.

Facts 😭
Only evil people and losers live In Minnesota.
I can attest to this
The drivers are the worst in the nation, by far.
You ain't been to Kansas.

(And, yes, that probably has something to do with the cult mentality.)
And, even though the population of the Twin Cities isn't even that high in population it feels so damn crammed.

MN takes selfish to a new lvl

Mn. definitely has its ability to make a descent 1st impression (especially in the summer, when everyones off there s.a.d. meds) it’s just not a sustainable one 💊
That the fake, make everyone believe a false image, you saw. You just weren't there long enough to see who they really are.
Bullshit. Outstate MN is full of a bunch of racist and culturally inept pricks.
God help anyone w/ anything near a conservative bent in Mn. Living in a Fly Over State makes for a wicked Napoleon complex. “The Minnie Apple,” SERIOUSLY 🤢
Wanna know a secret? Minnesotans don't want transplants.

You all have this all wrong I've been to many states and Minnesota is one of the best ones
I have lived in Chicago, San Francisco, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. I feel like it is very true.
A true Minnesotan response. Your brainwashed.
Tbh I live in Minnesota and I love it here and thats my opinion and if you don’t like it that’s fine just don’t criticize the people they did nothing
People who can’t take criticism are just weak and pathetic. And Minnesota is so overrated. There I said it. The end.
@@Kothrive It's like they lack the self awareness to see how ironic their comment is.
@@leesdroidaccountharbin9665 Yup. "Don't criticize". The passive-aggressive mantra.

Luckily, I grew up in one of the few places in Minnesota where that whole mentality would get you killed.

I was in Minnesota it’s not that bad stop Whining about it I think about the people live there we love it here and what we call home
……Mn. may be home to some, but for others just a sad Buckle On The bumpkin Belt 🤫
Yea Minnesota is so bad it’s not like we are home to the biggest clinic that has the best cancer research and treatments and we have one of the lowest crime rates Minnesota isn’t bad
JiVe Clan Nope, people from your state are mean, not street smart, narrow minded, socially retarded, controlling and hateful
...proof?
The only people brainwashed enough to think Minnesota isn't bland at best are the natives. Do yourself a favor and get out a bit more.
