  • In 2011, Turia Pitt was among the ultramarathon runners caught in a raging bushfire in the Kimberley, the northernmost region of Western Australia.
A WA parliamentary inquiry in 2012 found the Hong Kong-based adventure company, Racing The Planet, was not legally liable or to blame for shocking burn injuries to competitors.
But the inquiry found Racing The Planet had failed to take all reasonable steps to maintain the safety of runners and did not adequately communicate or consult with relevant authorities, including the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (now the Department of Fire and Emergency Service), about fire risks in the lead-up to the event.

Synopsis | Race for Survival (2011)
It's the kind of life or death moment that makes you wonder: what would I do? Trapped in a narrow gorge, a raging fire bearing down and no escape in any direction. It's what marathon runner Heather Scott and her fellow competitors found themselves facing when a firestorm engulfed their race in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia last weekend. Two competitors remain critically ill and three others are recovering from burns after the extreme outback challenge became a desperate race to stay alive. Hemmed in by a wall of fire, it came down to a single act of courage - defy every instinct of self-preservation and rush headlong back through the flames.
