I figured he may not remember part of it due to his British sensibilities. After all A Christmas Story is the ultimate American story...a little boy who just wants a bb gun for Christmas lol.
These stories had previously been made into a movie called the phantom of the open hearth. If you are the kind of gene Sheppard fan that I am it’s well worth looking up.
I loved Jean Shepard. We used to get his Jean Shepard’s America on the radio when we were stationed in Germany (66-70). They were terrific! The movie is all that...memories of Christmas.
But I don't consider that a _Christmas_ movie. I consider something like "Miracle on 34th Street" or even the more recent "Elf" more a true definition of a Christmas movie.

They play A Christmas Story on TNT and TBS every Christmas on repeat for 24 hours. Most people who know about it know about it because of these marathons. And I'm in California.
there are other film with the same family since they were based on stories from the works of Jean Shepherd' Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss, My Summer Story / It Runs in the Family, A Christmas Story 2
I quickly realised that the programmers gave up and stopped trying around the time they started doing this. I cannot remember the last time I watched either channel. ua-cam.com/video/DV6H2Khw48Q/v-deo.html
A Christmas Story is the best. Those of us of a certain age can really relate to the setting and clothes. My mother would dress my sister just as Ralphy was cloth to go out in the snow. He could hardly walk because of all the layers.
Bernadette you are absolutely right a Christmas Carol is the best one they made one with george c Scott and another actor but those were horrible. Stay safe and have a merry Christmas. Best wishes from Connecticut.
I watch A Christmas Story with my family during Christmas. Mind you I live in Idaho and I can assure it’s not a regional showing. I’m sure CBS and TBS show it throughout the country.
CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) was one of the three big national broadcasting services before cable was even a thing. It was broadcast in VHF (very high frequency) television frequencies along with NBC (National Broadcasting Company; remember the Peacock in full color), while ABC ( American Broadcasting Company) was broadcast in UHF (ultra - high frequency). Now cable and satellite TV along with other tv services have multiple channels of these stations that if I tried to understand it all, I would only be fit to live in a mental facility.
I’ve never seen “Four Christmases”, and apparently I’m not missing anything, but the others are in my top ten favorite Christmas movies. I’m glad you had a chance to see all of them.
The end of Wonderful Life leaves me skeptical. What wife would just happily accept a complete turn around in behavior from her husband? Your depressed, down, grumpy ass husband shows up late to a party acting like a maniac and you'd just smile? The end of that movie would have her grilling his manic ass.
I have three favourite Christmas movies. The most recent movie added to my list, 7 or 8 years ago, is "Hogfather" (2006) starring a whole bunch of great British actors. Next is "White Christmas" (1954) with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. The third movie is "Scrooge" (1970) starring Albert Finney, Obi-Wan Kenobi...I mean Alec Guinness.
The people who told you that were wrong, it's shown on tbs and tnt 24 hours straight on Christmas Eve and Day. A Christmas Story is based on the work of Jean Shepherd.
The Lion In Winter is a holiday fave. Moonstruck is also another. A line from the film became a favorite family phone greeting: Cosmo: _"Rose. ROSE?"_ Rose: _"...who's dead?"_
Both great films! Love Moonstruck! And Katherine Hepburn is always awesome. If you like quirky, try Bell, Book and Candle with James Steward, Kim Novak and Jack Lemon plus more great stars. There’s a scene where Steward has to drink this concoction to break a spell that is a riot.
@@larrypatterson5363 Actually, I think it takes place in 1940. There are a few men in uniform, but no mention of the war yet. And the clothes are definitely late ‘30s/very early ‘40s.
Charlie brown christmas is a timeless classic that hit on the constant religious vs corporate theme that inevitably plays out every year and its soundtrack remains one of most people favorites for the holiday. And everyone either is themselves or has had a friend or relative like charlie brown which makes it so relatable.
I recommend Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara stanwick. Bad Santa, the nightmare before Christmas, and the lemon drop kid which introduces the song silver bells.
I absolutely love Christmas in Connecticut but it rarely gets on tv. So I most definitely agree with your choice. Love Ms Stanwyck as a faux Martha Stewart type, and Dennis Morgan...
I have to watch four every Christmas. Bing Crosby "White Christmas", Sandra Bullock "While You Were Sleeping", everyone one in "Love, Actually" and of course "Die Hard".
I just watched While You Were Sleeping the other day. People don't realize it's set at Christmas. Also, we watch Trading Places at Christmas in our house; it's a Christmas movie too 😊🎄💜❄️💗
I’ve always liked Christmas Vacation!! Home Alone is great too...it may be that I just love listening to my grandkids laugh 😆 so hard!! Thanks Laurence!!
I first saw Christmas Story in my 9th grade English class - our teacher showed it as an example of excellent descriptive writing since the author of the stories the movie was based on (Jean Shepherd) also wrote the screenplay and narrated the movie as adult Ralphie. I didn't expect to like it - thought it was some dumb show our teacher forcing us to watch as part of our class. And of course as 14 year olds, we were all "too cool" to be into Christmas. I still remember our classroom full of teenagers laughing almost non-stop. It went on to be a staple tradition in my family, watching it every year. While yes, it's loosely connected stories about Ralphie and his quest for his bb gun, it does such a great job of showing what it's like to be a kid and the ups and downs. Even though I was born in the 70s so can't be "nostalgic" about the time period, I love the nostalgia of the movie, the family relationships (the parents are wonderful) and every character in the film is so funny and well drawn out. It's sweet, innocent, and hilarious. Good times!
A Christmas Story is the greatest Christmas movie ever. The only plot is a kid wanting a BB gun for Christmas. The rest is just a random collection of memories from a man reminiscing about the best Christmas of his childhood. It's brilliant in its simplicity and great story telling.
Random collection of memories... "Ooohhhh fffffudge. Only I didn't say fudge... I said the word, the queen mother of dirty words, the F-dash-dash-dash word."

A Christmas story. My Dad was 10 years old in 1948. This was one of his favorite movies. He said they nailed it as far as growing up at that time, and the only thing they missed was kids saying "I must be adopted because my REAL mom and dad wouldn't treat me this way!" We kids pitched in and got him one of those leg lamps - It sits in my living room window to this day, even though he passed away 2010.

I wish they showed it on TV in the US more like they do in the UK.
"A Christmas Story" is episodic because of what it is based on. It is the quest for his BB gun the ties the whole movie together and makes it so great. And Charlie Brown Christmas is not a movie it's a TV special.
I think the episodic nature of _A Christmas Story_ is one of the reasons it's so popular now (it didn't do much business in theaters) and works as a loop for 24 hours; you can bake cookies, trim the tree, wrap presents, etc., enjoy one of the sequences from the movie, go back to your task and repeat.
The movie is episodic because it's based on Jean Shephard's book, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash. Good book, btw, but best read in several sittings. Too much going into be absorbed
@@jeepstergal12 A few bits of trivia about the short stories the movie was based on. 1. 3 of the 5 stories were originally published in Playboy from 1964 to 1966. 2. The Bumpus story was published in a different book than the other 4. It was published in Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories. 3. The Bumpus story takes place at Easter, not Christmas. 4. It is a ham that the dogs eat, not a turkey. But it still forces them to eat Chinese. 5. In 2003 the 5 stories were collected into a book titled (naturally) A Christmas Story.
@@al007italia I forgot about "Wanda...." although I do own copies of In God We Trust and Wanda. Time in which story was set is different as well. The movie was about 10 years later than the book. Mr. Bean and the Christmas turkey episode - now that was memorable! One of the funniest things I've ever seen. It was not "lost in the pond", and I'm glad you mentioned it. Watching that should become a holiday tradition. You should do an episode on British comedies not lost in the pond like "Are you being served", "Keeping up appearances", "Benny Hill", etc.
I was very young in the 1960's. My parents were adamant that I not read any Dr. Suess books. I guess they thought it was a Communist plot or something. But we always watched the Grinch on TV every Christmas. I guess they didn't know.
OMG! "A Christmas Story" absolutely has a coherent theme: a man's memory of this boyhood Christmas. Naturally, it's a series of scenes, but that's the way kid's minds work. However, the best Christmas movie is "Scrooge", which debuted in 1970 and starring Albert Finney. It's a British production, but it was very well received in America.
I watched Scrooge all the time. I was born at the end of ‘69 so yeah, I saw it a lot. And I love it (and I have a crush on the guy that sings thank you very much lol) but it also got me thinking that the only way to really make someone genuinely happy was to give them things - buy them things and you know- money. I’ve thought about that messaging a lot lately.
If you can find it, check out "Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol" from 1962. That and "Charlie Brown" were two of my favorites when I was but a wee tad. “A Christmas Story” is a classic film that is always played in our house during the festive season! But you have missed some other films you will need to add to your list. The classic black and white version of “A Christmas Carol” starring Alister Simm ( 1951) is a must as well as “ Christmas in Connecticut “ starring Barbra Stanwyck 1945. No Christmas is complete without “ White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye and the more modern animation “ The Polar Express” . The exhibition area had the usual Christmas displays, but also scenes from the movie, and the gift shop had A Christmas Story merchandise everywhere, and some of the merchandise was stocked year round, I think my family still has A Christmas Story Monopoly set.
When “A Christmas Story” was released in 1983 it bombed at the theaters. It wasn’t until Ted Turner bought the rights to it and started playing it 24 hours nonstop on Christmas Day on his TBS cable channel, that people began to “love” it. One of my favorite Christmas movies is from your side of the pond, “Love Actually”

I got to see Patrick Stewart playing Scrooge in A Christmas Carol live at the Guthrie theater in 2004 and it was amazing! He’s wonderful!!
I haven't seen it for a long time but, "Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol" is one of my favorites. Mr. Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge is priceless.
I love Mr Magoo’s Christmas Carol too. The songs are wonderful.
The Christmas Story being a montage of moments is actually accurate to the book it's based upon, "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash".
I figured he may not remember part of it due to his British sensibilities. After all A Christmas Story is the ultimate American story...a little boy who just wants a bb gun for Christmas lol.
And some from Wanda hickeys night of golden memories.
@@RossM3838 Have you seen Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss?
It's not Christmas until Hanz Gruber falls off Nakatomi Plaza.
God bless Alan Rickman! How I miss him.
But I don't consider that a _Christmas_ movie. I consider something like "Miracle on 34th Street" or even the more recent "Elf" more a true definition of a Christmas movie.
YES!
@@Sacto1654 No, Die Hard is a Christmas movie 😁
I'm happy he considers Die Hard a Christmas Movie, but sad he didn't mention Batman Returns.
It blows my mind that even if I haven't seen a CB Christmas in a number of years, I can still remember all the music from the sound track. ESPECIALLY "Christmas Time is Here." I am going to record myself singing it for two hours and then send said recording to you, Lawrence. With my deepest thanks. (grinchy giggles as I exit stage left.....)
They play A Christmas Story on TNT and TBS every Christmas on repeat for 24 hours. Most people who know about it know about it because of these marathons. And I'm in California.
But is it the original "uncut" version?

Yep!
I wish Scrooged was played on repeat for 24 hours.
I quickly realised that the programmers gave up and stopped trying around the time they started doing this. I cannot remember the last time I watched either channel.

A Christmas Story is the best. Those of us of a certain age can really relate to the setting and clothes. My mother would dress my sister just as Ralphy was cloth to go out in the snow. He could hardly walk because of all the layers.
I'm dating my self but my favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sims and a very young Patrick McNee.
and for me, it's got to be the B&W
My favorite scrooge movie too!
Bernadette you are absolutely right a Christmas Carol is the best one they made one with george c Scott and another actor but those were horrible.
Stay safe and have a merry Christmas.
Best wishes from Connecticut.
Yes alistair sims is the best Scrooge
It’s the only one worth watching every year. And it must be in black and white.
Check out "A Muppet Christmas Carol". It's very well done, and Michael Caine plays the part of Scrooge.
Excellent choice , one of my favorite , a must watch every Christmas .😊❤
Yes! Another good one.
First film I remember seeing at the pictures, scary that’s nearly 30 years ago.
I though Patrick Stewart played Scrooge in that.
@@hotwax9376 nope😂
I watch A Christmas Story with my family during Christmas. Mind you I live in Idaho and I can assure it’s not a regional showing. I’m sure CBS and TBS show it throughout the country.
It’s a staple in Canada, too.
Amy Fisher it isn’t worth your time.
I liked it 🤷🏻♀️
You really should watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation if you haven't seen it yet, it's a really funny movie.
I watch that movie year round.
Actually the best of the entire National Lampoon Vacation franchise.
A GREAT Christmas Movie! The most fun, IMO.
I've watched this every single year since I was a kid, and it never ceases to amaze me just what a freaking idiot Clark Griswold is.
FireCracker3240 Cousin Eddie?
My husband's fave: A Christmas Story
Me: It's A Wonderful Life
It's A Wonderful Life is a great Twilight Zone episode.
Me: Christmas Vacation
I gotta go with your husband on this one
A line from the film became a favorite family phone greeting:
Cosmo: _"Rose. ROSE?"_
Rose: _"...who's dead?"_
I LOVE BOTH OF THESE!!
The Christmas Story appeals to my generation. Those born in the fifties and sixties. So many memories alluded to.
Except it takes place in the 30s.
Yes, Terri, you are right. It plays upon the sensibilities of the baby boomers.
And, no, it takes place in the late 40’s in Indiana.
@@larrypatterson5363 Actually, I think it takes place in 1940. There are a few men in uniform, but no mention of the war yet. And the clothes are definitely late ‘30s/very early ‘40s.
I was born in '59 and many things in the film still rang true to my childhood. I'm sure that wasn't as true as the 60's progressed.
Actually, the movie’s website says that it just “takes place in the 1940’s”.

"A Christmas Story" is pure gold. The best Christmas movie ever!
Good times!
I'm sure a lot of us out in the west have watched and still watch, "A Christmas Story."

One of my favorite things to watch around Christmas even though it’s bigger in the UK is Raymond Brigg’s The Snowman. Its one of my favorite animated shorts of all time and I love watching it. The end always makes me tear up and it’s such a touching and heartwarming story. My mom bought it on a vhs tape at a store and brought it home for us to to watch and I loved it ever since.

When “A Christmas Story” was released in 1983 it bombed at the theaters.
