- This is the first of two parts on why I love the NKJV translation of the Bible. I plan to make more videos on other translations that I recommend.

In 1979 the NKJV New Testament was finished, releasing only the Book of Psalms in 1980. NKJV is my favorite translation of all.
The NKJV “sings” just as well as its daddy. Truly incredible how a translation can be so literal and yet so readable. And the way these two translations say so much with fewer words is unrivaled by the rest. You just can’t beat ‘em.
I've always maintained that the Psalms read more beautifully in the KJV than any other translation, except perhaps the NKJV. Compare the 23rd Psalm in the KJV with the NKJV. Still very beautiful. As good as other translations are (and they are), only the NKJV retains the feel, the beauty, and the poetry of the KJV. A truly wonderful translation!

100% agree. No other versions have the same majesty or power as KJV or NKJV when reading Psalms.
@@MichaelTheophilus906 I wonder what language we'll speak in Heaven. Will it be Hebrew, or the language of the angels which predates Hebrew? Something to think about!
I like the fact too that you don’t have to worry about constant text changes. You can feel comfortable getting a nice bible knowing it won’t be “outdated” the next year.

I, too, grew up with the King James, and still hear it in my head. So... The NKJV has become my favorite version to read. I tend to also like the ESV, and RSV, and like to compare them.
The NKJV reads beautifully, and just sounds right to me...I don’t need, or want Scripture to sound like everyday English speech.
And... I love that there have been no updates since 1982. That’s stability, which I think is important.
I am enjoying getting familiar with the ESV, but don’t really like the constant revising. It just is not necessary.

I like THAT NKJV was a real new translation. Not just taking out the THEE'S AND THOU'S.
THE NKJV notes ARE a great way of explaining.
I am a Catholic Christian..raised Methodist...and the KBJ And the RSV... The NKJV is my fav translation. I just ordered a Purple NKJV.. Giant Print. .

Thanks for sharing your views on the NKJV. It's one of the translations I use in my daily bible readings. I include it along with the ESV, CSB, NIV, NASB and others. I grew up on the KJV and find the wording familiar.
The NKJV is my favorite english Bible translation too. I live in Russia. Russian Synodal translation (especially NT) is 99% match the NKJV
There are a lot of immigrants from Ukraine and Russia in my town, I've never got a straight answer on what they actually read from. "Our version" and "I'm not sure" are all I get when asking about what translations we have comparable to them, I don't think most of them use English bibles or know what we're reading either.
Most of them are some sort of Pentecostal.
nkjv is my number 1, and kjv number 2. Sometimes I just have to hear it in the kjv. Thorough review, thanks.

A word in the KJV that always trips me up is suffer, because it’s used how we used it today and to mean “to permit or allow”.
A good Bible dictionary helps.
Very well stated, the nkjv doesn’t drive off the ditch in looking for relevance. The Nkjv is the final update to the kjv using a majority/ traditional text. As an old preacher said, choose the nkjv and you won’t go wrong. The nkjv is the text I hear when my pastor uses the NIV.

Great video… lots of good information… I read the NASB mostly, but I do choose a different translation every so often to read through.. and I am currently reading the NKJV! So far it’s most excellent!
The kjv is my favorite and the amplified classic Bible. I just ordered the nkjv Spirit filled life Bible. If I see a word I like better in the kjv I will put it in notes of my new Bible thank you
The new king James version was my first Bible version that I read. I love it the Kjv and the Youngs literal translation. All based on the TR. when I study I use the new King James Version bible in my hand and I have the Youngs literal translation on my phone app

I agree with you in what said about the King James Version,like I have memorize many verses from it however many archaic words that we don't often use today.So I became a secret NASV user because the church I am attending uses only the KJV though not KJVonly..So when NKJV came out I wanted to have own copy.Years later I was given a book on omissions on the NIV,looking through it there was a section on Errors on the NKJV,after reading it i found out that the author is actually a KJV only because no essential doctrine is mentioned about the NKJV.

I've used the NKJV as my main bible for decades. I've noticed that I have to explain a lot of the words to people though.
I still study with the NKJV but refer to ESV, CSB, NLT, NET and NIV to help with archaic or tough language.
Also my favorite, Went from the NIV to NKJV about the late 80’s

I am baptized catholic and have my holy communion as a catholic but i cant seem to wrap my head around the catholic bible so i have the 1984 NIV and precious moments NKJV and about to order another NKJV for my everyday use even though i will be reading my NIV 1984 quite a bit as well. My mother is catholic and my dads mother ( my late grandmother) is baptist. I felt more comfortable in a baptist church and readings than my own catholic church.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think the NKJV had been altered but we do family bible readings out of the NKJV and my daughter was using an older version and it read sojourned, where our newer NKJVs read stayed. Not a big deal but it surprised me. Thanks for the videos!
Correct. They did a minor revision in the early 80s. That’s all they’ve done since.

I am curious when uou preach on 1 Corinthians 1:18.. do you preach that we ARE saved?.. or BEING saved?... in the NKJV... the wording states "being saved".. as if we are on the fence...waiting for the act to be completed... and what is your stance on Revelation 4:11..?...did God create us to bring Him pleasure.?. or simply because He willed it ?... why did He will us to be created..?.. you won't grt the answer from the NKJV...
@@jeffcarlson3269 I believed there's a twofold meaning. We're already saved spiritually, our salvation is secure in Jesus and we're constantly being saved( delivered) from every day struggles of life. As Paul says in Philippians 2:12, work out your own salvation, not work for. Meaning what's been deposited, work it out of you. James 1:21 is another example of already saved but gaining victory through the word through day to day battles.
@@anthonyedwards8779 what you refer to as constantly being saved from every day struggles is defined in Christian circles as PROGRESSIVE SANCTIFICATION... SALVATION itself is a one time event in ones life.. as in the case of Nicodemus.. Jesus never told Nicodemus.. that he needed to keep being born again in his daily stuggles through life...
@@jeffcarlson3269 I didn't say that we have to be born again over and over. I was implying there are daily battles with our born again spirit and fallen adamic nature. Yes it's called practical sanctification because we've received our positional sanctification in Jesus Christ.

I see what you are saying... but what advice would you give to new Christians just beginning to read the bible....?.. do you think it is a good idea.. for a new un churched Christian to read in 1 Corinthians 1:18 "being saved".. without having a Phillip to come along side them and to show them.what is really meant by that passage..as you are doing..?.. this is one of my peeves.. new Christians Not being taught reading on their own.. developing ideas such as Apollos of Paul's day.. then some one ...years later.. having to come along and rightly divide the word of God for them...would it not be better for a new Christian bible reader .. unchurched ....to read the words "which are saved"... rather than "who are being saved"..?..

I got the NKJV today in Cambridge TOPAZ calf split. In a few moments NKJV became my favourite. Also like NASB 95. Altho 2020 NASB in paragraph AND verse letters is appealing. MORE choices than 1995 . I am for now KJV .. NKJV ..
And NASB ... Also like CSB.
I think we can learn from and are blessed to have so many good ones.
How has that calf split held up? I think they look and feel great, but I've heard they crack easily.

I agree with you on all points, Tim. KJV is my main use bible, however after a brother introduced me to the NKJV a year ago I now have two favourite bibles! Thank you for discussing this subject for those who want to understand what the NKJV actually is.

@@ritabrandow1318 The NKJV is exactly the KJV without the archaic pronouns thee, thou, thy etc, and also has the translation of some words and sentences with more modern usage as per Strong's Concordance. Therefore the bible is an easier read for those who love the KJV but who struggle a litle with it in places. The word differences are direct translations because more than one desriptive can be used without altering the purity of the text at all. So you can be confifent that what you'll read in the New King James Bible reads just as the KIng James Bible so that you won't feel as if it's some other strange different translation. It's not so much about keeping up with the KJV, but whether or not you agree with the Text it comes from, and I do I am Textus Receptus only.
It changes the word order in Matthew 24:30. This can result in a different meaning. It used the same words but in a different order so that verse is a new translation and not just an update of the King James to replace hard to understand words. The words are the same but in a different order. For a good explanation of the different interpretations of Mathew 24:30 so the book by Kik titled "An Eschatology of Victory". The 21st Century King James Version of 1994 does not change the word order in Mathew 24:30.
I'm a conservative brazilian christian, and NKJV is my favorite translation among the bibles in English because it's based on the Textus Receptus, which is the best and the most faithful text of the New Testament.

Imo, the most accurate text is the majority text. However, I love the textus receptus and the nkjv
My Bible College did not set a required or preferred translation for student use but it was evenly split between the NASB and the NKJV between the instructors. The NKJV was always easier for me to follow. It was also easier to use when consulting classic commentaries. I kind of got away from it by turning to the CSB. Lately, I've been nagged by the Greek text source debate. I may have to pick up my NKJV and give it another try.
@Jerry Weinhausen... hmmm your bible college did not set a translation requirement?... it must have been a more liberal one.. like Pensacola or Cedarville..?.. both my kids went to different bible colleges.. my daughter.. went to Faith Bible College in Ankeny Iowa.. and the KJV.. was the prefered one there ...most teachers used that for their teaching text.. but she got by using the NKJV.... they did not make KJV mandatory...but it was implied to be superior text wise..... my son went to Clearwater Bible college in Florida...he wanted to go there because they were strict regarding translation and dress code... He liked having to wear formal clothes to class.. and having to use only the KJV....
@@jeffcarlson3269 Not sure how you arrived at thinking that I went to a liberal Bible College. Better to ask than assume. My IFCA school discouraged use of Bibles that weren't formally equivalent in translation theory but on occassion, a kid or two would show up using the NIV1984. One of those kids is a missionary to first tribes today in Canada. There were quite a few that used the KJB at our school.
The bulk of of what I call "Golden Age" Profs from DTS or Grace Theological Seminary who were our Dispensational /Pre-Mill./Pre-Trib. authors sadly didn't use the KJB but they are still some of the most Godly men of our movement. The reason I said it was easier to follow the NKJV is because I used a KJB the entire time, which incidentally, NEVER got trashed in the classroom or privately. I would've preferred that alll my Profs would've used the KJB but they've remained faithful to the Lord and are still working hard toward training young people toward spreading the Gospel of Christ despite their choice of Bible they read. A couple of our students came from IFB homes of local pastors who were exclusively KJB defenders. They trusted us because of our Godly leadership. Never a scandal.
@@jerrynkathy sorry if I offended you.. it's my fault.. after being on so many web sites that seem to discourage the KJV and the readability of it and other stupid reasons for not wishing to use it.. I guess I'm just looking to pick a fight...I know there are a lot of faithful KJV users out there.. I am just disheartened and feel powerless.. that there are so many who feel the modern translations.. including the NKJV.. are more reliable.. I disagree...with them... and it bothers me... even though people are still getting saved thru the ministries of these translations... I do Not feel they know God the way they can.. and THAT is my thought... not that one cannot be saved through one using an NKJV..or others like the ESV or NASB..... in fact I am attending a church now that is NASB.. which saddens me...but I .......(and I am sincere as a heart attack on this)...do not feel they will reach a true spiritual maturity without the KJV .. in their lives..
@@jeffcarlson3269 No worries, Jeff. The nearest church who shares my perspective on the KJB (that I would attend) is approximately 70 miles away. They are Mid-Acts theologically and strongly prefer the KJV which is much closer to my thinking these days than when I was in school. The church I'm at now only has three KJ users; the rest use a spate of modern translations including the two pastors. We love them anyways. I tried two IFB churches. Both managed to disrespect my wife on our first and only visits. I don't want to turn this into a gripe session so I will keep those stories to myself.
Maybe you're like myself...Before 1881, the world had never seen a Greek text like the one used in translation for the English Revised Version. With some 15,000(?) alterations/deviations to the Received Text, they can't possibly say the same thing. I use the NKJV Study Bibles for notes and content not available in KJV Study Bibles. I use them sparingly but only accept and believe the text of the KJV.

My wife will not attend a baptist church with me because she thinks they are a bunch of hypocrites.. when she was a girl she used to win awards for memory verse recital in Awanas..in a Baptist church.... but now she is hesitant about entering a baptist. church.. I offered to go to another church with her... but she doesn;t seem to like that idea either... Her brother is a head pastor at a Baptist church close by.. he preaches from the nkjv.. and is a big John MacArthur fan.. I used to use MacArthur's study bible years ago.. but now I use it mainly for his commentarty. when my daughter that graduated from Faith got married, her Maid of Honor said she did not like J. MacArthur.. because he believed in Lordship Salvation.....I believe in Lordship Salvation as well.. but I got away from the NKJ text.. because I felt more drawn to the Kj text..
For notes and layout I like NKJV..and especially end of verse references in personal size LARGE PRINT. 10.5 FONT or more. From Nelson and Holman.
What is your opinion of David Daniels who says the NKJV is a transition Bible meant to drive sales to the more modern translations?
Can I respond? David Daniels is KJV only and as such does not approve of the use of any Bible that is not a KJV. That said, I like many of his videos.
NKJV sales fluctuate up and down & a look at the numbers over time shows that it has a devoted following. The NKJV dropped a couple spots I believe but is still at #5. Here are approximate Jan 2020 numbers:
1. NIV
2. KJV
3. NLT
4. ESV
5. NKJV
6. CSB
7. RV (Spanish)
8. NIRV
9. The Message
10. NASB
Just a question - people say the critical text is very word for word accurate - and yet I heard today that the critical text largely came from fragments of scripture (alexandrian) -
Where as the received text (Byzantine) came from a wider source. It is confusing. I was watching ‘the case for the received text - Dr Jeff Riddle | Text and Translation’ that brought this up
True info! For what it is worth, I have been studying the bible intensely for about 10y, even taking up the Koine Greek and focusing on the LXX's harmony with the NT bc Christianity would not see a "Hebrew" text of the OT until 1010AD so, if God waited 1100 years to introduce the highly expurgated "Hebrew" text, He obviously used the LXX Greek OT on purpose and in fact, it was the LXX exclusively that spread His Word about Jesus (Acts 15:21, John 5:39, Acts 17:1-3) as Greek had been the lingua franca for 400y by the day Jesus was born and there was a copy of the LXX waiting for the Greek-speaking disciples in every Greek-speaking synagogue in Greek-speaking city of every nation in the Greek-speaking Greek and Roman Empires since 285BC... Now. The problem is that there is NO English bible that uses the LXX as the OT (even the Greek Orthodox bible resorts to Hebrew "corrections") so the fact that no English bible has a copy of the LXX but rather uses an 11th century AD "Hebrew" text, completely unknown to Christianity for the 1st 11 centuries, in the front of all English bibles, is a total drag for someone like me who is constantly studying the Greek...[NOTE: please do not get freaked out, the distinction overall between the OT in Greek and Hebrew is minimal but _there is a difference when it comes to prophecies and numbers that do not add up] So, the next best bible one can get is an English translation that will cite as many __*_notes_* in the OT and NT as can be found in an English bible... and the most reference-rich bible connecting the NT & OT is the NKJV...

I use the New King Jimmy myself....but it is going to come down to manuscript families. The ESV and other modern translation use older manuscripts and so forth. Erasmus gathered the textual receptus and it has its issues...regardless of what KJV only folks say. What I like about the New King Jimmy is that the Bible is sacred and I like that it doesnt read like any other book...nor should it. Great for quoting. I also love all the ref notes and alternate readings it supplies in margins.

According to David Daniels, Chick Publications, we have been duped about the so-called older manuscripts, which were, in regard to Siniaticus, written in around 1840 and made to look old with tea or coffee stains. So they are invalid.
What bible do you have there I know into the NKJV but which one exactly ?
Is it possible to do a review of the SKJV, Simplified King James Version? It was published in 2022. They apparently kept everything in the KJV and modernized the Old English and "false friends" that Mark Ward speaks of often.

Correction, if I may. The NKJV is actually a stand alone Bible Translation based on the KJV. The last copy right in the KJV is in the 1700's this copyright is closed. The first copyright in the NKJV is 1982ish. To say the NKJV an update of the KJV would be like saying the NASB1995 is an update of the NASB1977, which would be true because the lockman foundation owns the copyright. Thomas nelson owns the copyright to the NKJV not the KJV. I find it important to make this distinction for some reason.

I grew up with KJV but when i stated going to church as a teenager i used the NIV for a while then i tried the NRSV but found its gender neutral language clumsy to read. Then i tried the NLT and The Message but they were paraphrased the i tried the NASB 1995 it was too literal. NKJV is my favorite now and the one i will stick with. 😊

Niv all the modern bible have missing verse. Nkjv and kjv doesn’t have missing verses in it.
There is no need to revise the NKJV, the Textus Receptus has not and likely will not change, unlike the critical texts that are revised frequently. I think there is more than enough room for both types of translation (and both Greek text philosophies) in the English speaking church, although I tend to fall on the KJV/NKJV/TR side myself.
As far as my favorite translations go, the number one spot is either NKJV or ESV.
I would not have other version than the KJ V/NKJ V.

Doesn't the NKJV have the best Cross References compared to let's say NASB or ESV? The NKJV Cross References are actually a built-in Study Bible. What's your opinion about this unique NKJV Cross Reference feature?
The NKJV has extensive cross references, but I do not know that they are better than the ESV or NASB cross-references.
They're good enough! I've gone through a lot of notes in a lot of bibles, honestly they don't mean much unless you've become very familiar with the entire bible...
... just because specifics words are quoted or paraphrased in multiple spots (and referenced) doesn't teach you how to interpret them (especially metaphors and parables).

I like the new King James Bible a lot. However, the Old testament was not translated from Texus Receptus
The Textus Receptus is a term for certain Greek New Testament manuscripts. So there is no Old Testament of the Textus Receptus to translate from.
What specifically was the minor revision about in 1984?
Textual notes are good especially for added verses like 1 john 5.7..8.
Which is mostly an added verse by Erasmus and Catholics? Which sort of taints Textus receptus and tends to KJV Only. Thinking.

I like this version for its readability. I use it alongside the ESV and NASB. Apart from that.....GO PHILLIES!!
When I look at bible versions I check the following: Psalm 23.
Psalm 121.1 which is a statement of faith not s question. John 3.16 and my favourite verse: Galatians 6.14.
If there are unacceptable changes to any of these I will not accept that version.
i agree with u that the NKJ is a good translation especially for those of us who are familiar with the KJV. in fact i will be preaching from it as i pastor. the KJVO guys though do not agree that it is ok to use
It's a great translation to preach from! And it's true that some people have strong beliefs about the KJV. I did a video on why I do not believe we should use the KJV exclusively. I grew up with the KJV, but I do not think KJVO arguments are biblical or in line with what the KJV translators themselves believed. I am grateful for the NKJV, though I still love the KJV as well.
Kjvo is not biblical, its idolatry and it makes people very prideful.

There are times when the NKJV uses the critical text.
Good video, the NKJV is my go to translation though the MEV is close behind it.
The MEV is like a somewhat smoothed-out NKJV. In places, the MEV has the same rhythm as the KJV. One example of this is the MEV rendering of "verily verily" as "truly truly" versus the NKJV's "most assuredly".
In many cases the MEV and NKJV are exactly the same. Both are excellent.
I know most of the English versions such as the KJV, NKJV, ESB, NASB, etc. But the MEV? What does MEV mean? Modern English Version?
@@joselimjoco658 the MEV (Modern English Version) Bible is a recent Bible translation based upon the same underlying Hebrew and Greek texts as the KJV. Look up MEV Bible reviews here on UA-cam to get a sense of what it is about. The MEV is available in the Tecarta Bible app for a few dollars if you want to read it and don't want to invest in a physical copy. They are available on Amazon, Christianbook.com, etc.
@@davidbrock4104 I got an MEV after hearing about it about a year ago and after reading the Preface it explains what it is. I like it a lot and have one in my car, although a long time KJV reader I love the NKJV now!

The KJV is not hard to read. It’s a perpetuated myth and not a very good one. Spend one week with the KJV reading it every day. You’ll see
NKJV is a great Bible that retains the majesty and beauty of the KJV. (Newer, wordier, and supposedly more accurate versions don't do it for me. It's like changing Shakespeare to modern English :( )
I've been trying to read the KJV bible but it's just too difficult. My brain hurts when I read it. So I'm gonna get a NKJV and hopefully have an easier time.

Any translation that makes a new translation every few years probably did not get it right in first place. Rules out most EXCEPT NKJV.
I am not a fan of the NKJV as a NASB 1977 man since 1987. The NKJV butchers the english of the KJV and if that is not enough, it has many of the errors of the KJV 1769 ie the Blainey Edition. Thankfully it has ironed out SOME of the errors of the KJV . The only saving grace of the NKJV is the excellent notes in the margin, ie Textual notes showing how the TR differs from the non TR Greek text. The NKJV unfortunately still follows the eronious TR in many verses, and still mistranslates many verses. The best translation is the NASB 1977 (only), for serious bible study. If you want a less literal but still a accurate translation, go for the HCSB or the CSB.

I like the NKJV but I just wish they did not capitalize the pronouns that referred to God just like the KJV because doing so is already a form of interpretation.
I have always capitalized the pronouns, out of reverence for God. It’s the way I was brought up.
It is a flowery and poetic read to be sure but isn't the so-calked "King James" or Authorized Version basically just a British government Bible meant to combat Geneva Bible Protestantism? In other words, a political document of the early 17th century?
I really wish UA-camrs like Tim would give a straight answer on what their favourite translation is sometime. If he was literally forced to just pick one and have it on a desert island for the rest of his life, which one would it be? I think people's inability/reluctance to pick a favourite bible speaks to the confusion all these different translations have brought into Christendom. We are to study "the bible", not "the bibles". We are to obey "the good book", not "the good books". While I appreciate people wanting to occasionally consult a different translation for clarity, a more straight answer on this matter would be appreciated sometimes. For me, it's the NKJV! It retains some of the beauty of the KJV while bringing the language into the contemporary arena and it includes those 16 disputed passages that are relegated to footnotes in bibles based on the Critical Text. If I had to pick one for the rest of my life, the NKJV gets the nod. What do you say, Tim? If you were forced to just have one, which would it be?
The King James Bible is the Word of God! The New King James Bible is not the word of God! It says in The King James Bible in The Revelation 1:6.: And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. We can read this in the new King James Bible in The Revelation: 1:6.: and has made us [c]kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
In the King James Bible it says that Jesus is God, while in the New King James Bible it says that Jesus is not God!!!
also look at JOB 4:17.. compare the NKJV to the NKJV.... if you'll notice in the KJV .. Job's friend was accusing Job.. in the KJV.. of thinking of himself as Greater than God... but in the NKJV.. we only get the impression.. that Job was thinking of himself as equal to God... which is the greater.. sin?.....
and let me ask you... why did the NKJV translators feel they needed to update THAT verse..?.. it was NOT hard to understand in the KJV...was this one of the unneccesary liberties.. I have been ranting about....?...
look at Numbers 21:14.. in the NKJV..... can you tell me what "WAHEB and SUPHAH.".. means...?.... there is NO such problem reading this verse in the KJV...
one point I would like to make.. regarding why I am NOT sold on the NKJV text as opposed to the KJV text... Haggai 1:10..NKJV..."therefore the heavens ABOVE YOU...."in the KJV it reads..."therefore the heavebns OVER YOU...".. the NASB..."therefore the sky BECAUSE OF YOU..."..
the original manuscript gives the connotation.. of ...."because of you.."... in other words Haggai 1:10 .. was written.. with the intention of God explaining why something has happened to the Israelites... basically that it was THEIR... fault.. that there has been No dew...
this meaning is totally lost when instead of leaving the words from the KJV....."OVER YOU".. alone and changing them to what the NKJV translators.. THOUGHT.. this meaning was.. perhaps based on their mis understanding of ths in the KJV....and thus .they changed the words "OVER YOU".. to read "ABOVE YOU".. thus changing this from an explanation.. to a location...
multiply THAT a hundred times over.. and you can see why I prefer the KJV...
I really think if you checked the NKJV carefully,... you will find the NKJV is MORE than JUST an update of the KJV..
the NKJV is a sublimal way.. of pulling peopke away from God's intended meanings of many passages...
I would hope that this was due to the ignorance on the part of the NKJV contributors,.. and NOT done on purpose...kind of scary ,really...
The King James Version is in line with the superior Majority Text, while the New King James (and all the other so-called new and improved translations) is influenced by the inferior (far fewer manuscripts) Alexandrian line. I trust the King James Version, I do not trust the NKJV or any other English translation.
This is untrue.. Please read the Preface to the NKJV for an acurate explanation of what the NKJV is.

It's JUST A NAME. my reason for not liking the NKJV is that it simply changes some of the words of the kjv. It doesn't give a fresh perspective.
I recommend using both the NLT and NASB together. That way you get easy reading and literal translation
