From someone living in a capital city near one end of the Nullarbor- people are scared to drive that stretch of road, let alone ride it. Amazing accomplishment.
I love it more when I'm alone so I'm giving this a shot. I just bought my first bike at age 19. I went for a very basic single speed hybrid bike with a steel frame and 700c x35 tyres. I'm really looking forward to this new journey I'm about to begin.
I have rode on several bike trails with a single speed steel frame fat tire bike. Originally I was riding my single speed with a 18T cog and after going thru 21T, 22T, 23T, 24T and eventually ending up and currently riding around on bike trails with a 26T cog. I love the simplicity and low maintenance of the single speed bike. You are definitely an inspiration to me and please keep up the good work.
Loved the interview dude! I went around Australia on a fixed gear. Now thinking about going round the world. Good to watch some inspiration of people take the next step above. Need to go through your other videos!
And here I was thinking I might need a geared bike if I decide to go on a century some day lol. I'm all set with my single speed! Plus, I also have a Surly!
Every mile counts (: Glad you enjoyed the film, if you are interested I have just finished a book about gravel cycling in Britain, which features three more RTW cyclists, Mark Beaumont, Jenny Graham and Jaimi Wilson.
Very cool idea. Riding around the world on a singlespeed bike makes sense to me. Simplicity and robustness. No bent derailleur hanger or rear derailleur that can get caught in the spokes, etc. At the end of the day, you're not any faster on average with a bike with gears. You will probably manage an average of 20 km/h. The gear ratio is small, so uphill climbs are no problem up to a certain point.
Yepp, simpliicty was the main reason why I rode the bike. My average was pretty consistent, only NZ was slightly slower, as it was mainly off-road, and Australia was a bit faster, as it is more flat than other countries. Still touring singlespeed, great way to cut the fuss out (:
My gosh. What a beast. I would love to try this but unfortunately I wouldn't know where to begin. Question though: What are the obstacles with showering daily, washing clothes, peeing/pooping, not having your things stolen, etc. Are you staying in hotels or camping out?
Ohh man you are awesome you are my inspiration I am from bangladesh and do cycling with my single speed dual disk cycle love u man please visit our country.
My wife and I are touring tuscany for a month and are wondering about your gear ratio? Right now we run it pretty high, 2.53:1 but I have a smaller front chainring to use which brings me to 2:1. What do you think?
I enjoyed the nallarbor too...it was tough but yes...I enjoyed it...remember when I got to Norseman...I did not want to buy food...I asked the girl at the cashout.. How much for the shop !!!

And I thought I was badass riding across my city in a single speed.
You are Brodie

Thanks heaps Carlton! I am back on my singlespeed gravel bike while this bike is touring Scotland - loving it!

So were you on fixed or single speed? Great job in both cases ofc, but still curious.
@@albrechtniemann8027 Fixed
@@josephxkendrick correct me if I am wrong...you used a fixie with brakes..front and rear....not like the traditional ones without brakes.
Incredible trip, super impressed, and great that you manged to as you said 'get out of the daily grind'
And all on a single speed to boot, super tough!
Fantastic philosophy! Thanks for the journey! 👍
So cool Markus... you are the man and cheers! To the next adventure
The simplicity of single speed 👍👍 Amazing journey
Thanks guys 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Legend !

Great to see you being filmed in Scotland🏴🏴🏴My singlespeed comute to work is a bit lame compared to your achievement👍

Single speed: because the challenge is with myself!
I was watching this because I'm buying internal 3 speed bike tomorrow, seeing if it could be done.
The day i became a father i stopped touring with my bike, i hope one day i can tour again but this time with my son.
That would be amazing!

I was riding a 32:18 and that is pretty much my choice for all hilly, mountainous rides. 42/17 has worked well on my cross bike as well.
Ratios ???
What's with the guy in 1:16 is he traveling by foot?
He was crossing the Nullarbor. I have forgotten his name, sorry.
I want to know the whole specs of his bike 😁

A modern hero

Why don't you use panniers?
Bravo!
Thank you!
Leggend!
Traveling on bicycle or walking long distance is easy if you are an introvert.

How much for the shop !!!
Totally like me. I went for the Pizza, and it was amazing!
Did he push bike up all hills?
The interviewer wasn't a bike expert. 32/18 it was/is.
@@reizkultur is that better than a 46/16?
cool brother m also a explorer but not went so much far after 2 years m going
What ratio is he using?
That's what I'm wondering, but it's definitely a micro-drivetrain. Very tiny chainring, like even smaller than a mtb tiny!
32:18 I think.
Oh mine, single speed!!!!! 😮
Good fun (:
🙂
I think fix gear is better than geared bicycle...
with my single speed bike
Love from pakistan ...visit my country ....
Soon hopefully!
Around the world....
Also them, 26 countries
better than americans, whenever you hear an american speaking about "the world" they really just mean usa
i do single speed for less break downs .. light as hell. haha.. maybe list trike with electric and 200 mile range . haha.
30'000 km world record ? ? Tilmann Waldthaler did about 300'000 km (!) by bicycle and he's been in every country on this planet.
mastering America boys, working through the disaster and disease.
Rip knees
Much better than with gears!
single speed but not fixed
what a terrible idea
Its only because you couldn't do it and it easier to criticize his choice.
chris And yet it worked for him.
