My grandma told me stories about panthers and how their scream sounded. She was born in the Smokies in 1898. Your story of the woman milking and getting the best of a wildcat made me think of my grandma. My word of the day is, "Never underestimate the strength of a mountain woman." 😉🐾

The story about your Great Grandma was great. The picture you drew in my head was her holding the cat down waiting for the men folk to kill it, not even leaving her milking stool, just spinning back around and finishing her milking. Them people were tough as nails. Good job Justro.

My friend had a big family get together at Folsom Lake in CA, (this was before digital phones and cameras). The bunch of them gathered in front of a granite outcropping about 30 ft tall for a picture. When the film got developed & they got the pictures back they were shocked to see a big mountain lion laid out on top of that rock! My friend showed me the picture and that sure was something! Enjoyed those stories, thank you for sharing

We have cougars where I’m from. They are fairly common. My husband carries a large quick fold out knife everywhere he goes for this reason.Lots of bear and cougar attacks on the remote job sites in the woods/mountains. He says the cougars scare him more then the bears since they stalk you and ambush you from above. 🇨🇦

First off I think it's awesome that you're living on the same place that 6 generations have lived and farmed . That's a true blessing to me.
I was about 6 or 7 when I first heard a panther. We were at my cousins house nothing but dirt roads with deep ditches on each side and we were playing in the ditch about 100 yards from the house catching tadpoles in the puddles. When that thing screamed it's a sound like no other. Maybe like a woman but a lot higher when close. Well you would have thought my little brother and cousin and me was trying out for the Olympic track team getting back to the house. I saw a black one cross the road when I was about 14 a few years later caught a glimpse of one in the woods. Then when Iwe had our first born was about 2 in 89 we had a trailer on a pond and we watched one walk across the pond dam his tail as long as him. I believe like you said they're still around just don't let is see them very often. Thanks for your stories and I pray them precious girls have a blessed year of school. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

I was born and raised around Grundy , Virginia and when I was about 8 my mom and I were working in our garden when we saw a black panther leap out of the creek bottom about 12 feet onto a big flat rock and just stood there watching us about 50 feet away . We stood there for several seconds then 3 small ones scrambled up the bank and mom told me to back up toward the house which was several hundred feet away and we both back all the way to the house even though the panther had leap into the laurel bushes as quite as a mouse and disappeared .

My father was born in Red Jacket coal camp pretty close to Matewan WV. He told me a story about walking the road over the mountain home from Matewan late one night and a panther stalking along just off in the edge of the woods all the way to his house. He said he caught sight of it in the moonlight a couple times. He said he instinctively knew not to run but that was a long scary walk I'm sure. That would have been around about 1952 or so. We often set out on the porch at night and listened to them scream at a den sight over on the adjacent ridge back in the early 1980's I grew up in the Appalachian mountains in southwest Virginia. We had our camp meat stollen out of the creek 15-20 yards from the campfire on several occasions. I would love to set on the porch or around the campfire and swap stories with you.

There's alots of good size bobcats here in GA. Plus, I know for a fact I've seen a huge black as the ace of spade Panter with a long tail that goes down they makes a u back up. I did see two in my time. 12 years living here in GA. BUT, IT COULD OF BEEN 1 Panter THAT I SEEN two different times. And I did hear the very screams that you was talking about. It put chills down my arms. The sad part it wasn't very far from my home. (I always carry now)

There are panthers all throughout the states I guess. Where I used to live in Texas there were panther stories. A friend of mine was in a tree stand deer hunting and a panther came and stood up with his paws on the tree and looked at him a few seconds and walked off.

Seen a few bobcats but no mountain cats. I think people have somewhat of a fear of cats. My mamaw wouldn’t let a cat in the house. She said they would steal your breath while you were asleep. We had a cat that came in sometimes when I was a kid and I woke up with it staring in my eyes right over my head. FREAKED ME OUT!! Keep up the good work. God bless.

What an accent! Not boring like here in far north California. Surely you recount stories to your girls. Don't let them get too old for them. No one here ever asks me my stories. Wow, your stories! Got my attention! May granny was jumped by a small bobcat; something she might be able to handle. You've found your niche, Justro: mills stones, and storytelling.

I had a experience with a big cat one night coon hunting. It followed us all night never would get close enough to see but you could hear it stalking us. It hollered a couple times and the dogs even got scared out and went back to the truck. I have never personally saw a painter around here but a real good friend of mine swears one jumped across the road in front of him one morning before daylight as he was headed out to work.

I enjoyed the stories. I've heard a lot of the same kind of stories from my relatives here in the mountains of northeast Alabama.. They were some tough people back in those days. I remember my grandmother telling me about a cow they had, when she was a young girl. It was bad to kick the milk bucket over when they were milking it My great grandpa was a farmer and the community blacksmith. He was a big strong man. It kicked the bucket over one day when he was milking and he stood up and punched it in the head and knocked it out. It never kicked a bucket again.

Hi! I just discovered your channel, and just became a New subscriber. Normally I’m a quiet person but I just have to comment on this one. Growing up in rural Kentucky my two brothers and I played all over these mountains when we had free time from Chores around the house, pulling weeds from our 3 Vegetable garden’s , packing water from the creeks to water the Tobacco garden, but when we had days off Mom would tell us to get out and stay out! Well, she said it a little nicer, (don’t be running in and out, or I will find something for y’all to do, if you want to play, go play! ) one day I was off in the mountains by myself because I was a ( girl) and couldn’t play in my brothers fort, I had to go make one of my own and was Determined my fort was going to be better then my dumb ol’ brothers fort, as I climbed higher looking for cool fort materials I heard what I honestly thought was a woman Screaming… Screeching, even as the Only girl and toughest girl in the holler, that sound coming from above me gave me Goosebumps, I ran down that mountain, Slipping and sliding most of the way down and braved the Wrath of my Mother who just wanted a few minutes alone from all of us kids. I busted through the door out of breath, I saw my Dad who was now home, kicked back in his Hunter green leather recliner with a Budweiser in his hand, trying to explain to them that some woman was screaming, surly being murdered way, up high in the mountains. My mom looks at Dad with Concern in her eyes, and Dad just said, that’s a black Panther they’ve been around here since I was a boy, you kids just stay out of the mountains a couple days and don’t be going that high up. Lol… thinking back we never got snake bite’s even with rattle snakes everywhere around here even though we rolled in leaves and investigate everywhere too busy playing and fighting to even think about that they where others things in them mountains other then us, bobcats, bears, mountain lions and I saw that one but that’s a whole other story, all I can say is…God truly does watch over his little children.

IN coming up to an old covered bridge that crossed the white river, I'm positive I saw a black panther cross the road and tuck into the woods. No body beleived me but a few years later there were several cougars sighted and even photographed in those same river bottoms. Maybe it looked black cause it was dark but size and shape I knew it was a huge cat (bigger than a german sheperd) with a really long tail. Thank God I wasn't on foot.

Great stories. My granny told me stories of panthers. I’ve never seen one but I have seen several bobcats and bears here in Claiborne County. About 3 months ago I was driving to work one night and a big cat ran across the road in front of me. It stopped for a split second and ran up the bank and up on the ridge. It wasn’t a bobcat I saw. I know it was a mountain lion. My husband said I’m probably wrong but I know what I saw. I haven’t seen it anymore but I’m a bit Leary of going outside alone after dark. But I know what I saw wasn’t a bobcat or super sized house cat. It’s rural area where we live and I hear all kinds of sounds in the woods and ridges at night but I ain’t going exploring to find out what’s out there. Sometimes a cow or a bull will snort really loud and I can see where people who ain’t used to the sounds of the country might think it’s a monster. But I know I saw a mountain lion. Oh yeah. More stories please 👍

My dad hunted and rambled the southern KY hills around his home his whole life. He said when he and his brother were out coon hunting they dared each other into going to the "Booger Hole". This was a place that elders had told them about, a spot known for hearing strange noises...... Dad and the brother sat by the hole for a while. When day started breaking, they heard a whole encampment of soldiers wake up and arise. All the sounds, men talking, cooking , horses making noise. They listened to this terrified for about an hour, then the soldiers were ordered to mount up and they rode away! Dad said this place was just a hole in the ground, not large but bottomless the best they could tell. My dad was not a jokey type person. And he said he would never go there again.

Just the other night at a friends birthday dinner he was showing pictures from his trail cam of some land they own, several huge deer with nice racks, some black bear and a huge bob cat, it looked like something you would see on a safari and this is northern Minnesota !!!
You are right about if they don’t want to be seen, you don’t see them very often ! I’ve lived her for almost 40 years and I’ve seen one cat, I about wrecked the car !!! My back yard butts up to the edge of the Paul Bunyan state forest, I used to hear a woman screaming out in the woods but no one lives back there and the nearest road back there is a mile away and this scream was at the edge of my property…..of course I went out with a flashlight to investigate but found nothing and the screaming stopped. I asked people about what I heard and needless to say, I quit investigating 😳
Glad your girls are liking school and thanks for your stories and just being you…..I love it !!!!
    Blessings

Sure have enjoyed this here video and the big cat stories. It reminded me of quite a few handed down from folks I knew and believed to be telling the truth. I'm also looking forward to some of the ghost stories. I've experienced some first hand and always enjoy hearing other stories from reputable folk. God bless you and thank you for sharing this with us all!

Enjoyed your stories. I have spent a lot of time out in the mountains and have learned to be very alert for danger as we have lots of cougars. I feel much more comfortable when I have a dog or two with me. They can detect danger be fore we will in most cases.
Keep up the good work. Look forward to your next video.

I have heard about the panther screams! Scary stuff! Mine has been people. In 3 different homes one in the woods, 2 in town I have had “peeping Toms” as we called them. I remember my dad running after one, and the other two times my father was working out of the country. Then as an adult my teenage daughter came home and called me to ask me why I left everything out. I didn’t know what she was talking about and she started describing the drawers are open, etc. While on the phone with me she heard a noise upstairs. I screamed to her to run out of the house and wait at the road as we were just almost home. When we got home and went in the house we discovered the window in her bedroom was open, my pistol was laying in the floor on the other side of the bed not facing the door. So I presume they had grabbed my pistol and laid there hidden when they heard her come in and when she went to the kitchen to call me they went upstairs to hide. When she left the house they did, too! Never knew who that was but I just thank God again every time I think of it that he protected my daughter.

😳😳. That’s some scary stuff!! Read some journals of Pioneers in the mid 1700s going through Pennsylvania, no animal brought more fear than a panther. A Fox can make some pretty scary noises too!! DNR won’t admit it but they let those mt lions loose here in Indiana national forest

Well, I do believe the phrase, “Back in the black”, will stick with me for a while… What a woman your several times great grandmother was Justin. Our ancestors were incredible. I’ve done a lot of research on my ancestors (Revolutionary War veterans and most are traced to the early 1600s colonies. We have no idea how strong they were I guess.) Thanks for sharing about Charlotte’s happy first day of school. Between that, Ms Debbie’s gift and knowing Virginia and Charlotte got to enjoy that gift, well it just made my week.❤️

The smokie mountains, look like that from decomposing trees, there is absolutely no increase in carbon dioxide emissions from burning wood, as wood decomposes it releases it stored carbon dioxide, just like burning it in your and mine wood stoves.

A male mountain was killed in Georgia about 10 yrs ago by a hunter. DNA tests showed it came up from the Everglades. Another male mountain was killed by a car in New England a while back.DNA test showed the cat came from West of the Mississippi river. Even if you dont have a resident population male lions can range a long ways.I have no doubt there are some in the Appalachians.

When we moved from California to rural Washington State I told my kids” well at least we don’t have to worry about Mountain Lions anymore.”
    Why Dad?
No Mountain Lions in Washington, none!
    That’s great ! They said.
Next time they got ready to go in a hike deep in the woods, I asked
    “ Got your big knife?”
“No why , no mountain lions here right?”
“No lions. But we do have Cougars!!!!”
    Same animal different name …
Pumas are like house cats right???!!

They are black with a long tail. Good video
