In the olden days the grain mill was most often the “Heart” of a community. Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. And hopefully bring back some of that “Heart” and maybe a little more Love.

My father, uncles, and aunties used to leave a note when they went to visit and didn't find anyone at home. The note ALWAYS read... "I was here and you were not. Now you are here and I am not". More than a few times they missed each other because they both were going to visit the other. How they didn't pass on the road I don't know.

I love hearing your stories about the olden days. It's wonderful that your recording them for prosperity. I pray you're downloading all your episodes as backup in case something happens to this platform. I would love for you to have this wealth of knowledge and wisdom spoken in a calm, relaxed, and real Appalachian accent. I learned ways to rally the town in case of danger. Thank you for sharing this with us. I have most of them saved, I foolishly trusted the people that we’re helping me get started on UA-cam, they insisted on keeping all my saved videos and now they refuse to let me have them back. There are other ways I can get them just not all my original footage. I found out they just wanted to have an upper hand on me, but nobody ever has and nobody ever will.

@@metcalfmills5679that really ticks me off, I’ll assume it is the “permapasture….” Channel ? I refuse to watch them since he did what he did to you. I stood up for you over on that channel before you originally posted about your delay, they you posted and I was justified in my defense of you. I asked him to apologize and he commented back that, no he would not apologize!!!
I don’t know how much he donated to you on your project but I really feel all of us that love and trust you could raise enough money so you could pay him back in full !!! Let us know if that’s something you need !

I was thinking about modern distractions yesterday while the pup was taking me for a walk on the mountain. We were just following his nose not doing much but wandering around. A bee bumped me and we moved over missing a nest. I can't tell you how many times I've been stung, and if I think back, something real small bumped me just before that. He had done all he could to say "Hey Bigfoot!" We do spend a good bit of time with the real stuff drowned out, there's a show going on all around us all the time. (Now his first ground bee nest, I was on the porch and saw him scampering and rubbing his face in the grass. But he was confused, he didn't know what was happening. I had to call him, and then the show began. An old man, a puppy, and a swarm of bees running a hundred yard dash!)
I did take the mill truck to the county fair, we had a good time, I think folks enjoyed it. I've resupplied a few folks already. We headed down south and around your neighborhood a week or so ago heading for a wedding in Atlanta. The family had been seeing pictures and hearing about me building the mill truck, so, there's fresh cornmeal down south and on the west coast now :).
Justro, the only thing I can do with rocks is make little 'uns out of big 'uns. I'm an old carpenter and sawmiller and I believe in what you are doing. I know about keeping stuff in house and appreciate what that does for making things right, but feel free to holler if those hands can lighten the load on your community mill project. We were rebuilding an apple grinder last week, apples are coming.

Hope you can get your mills goin soon. Life is full of responsibilities for sure!! Your girls are priority one and that’s just the way it should be. But you should consider doing updates on where your project is. Whether there’s change in it or not. Some considered it to be a project to support and for that alone should be given the respect of notification whether there’s change or not. You have a great Channel here and I for one enjoy your content, but asking about your project doesn’t always point to negativity, but may be just pure interest in where you are. Be Blessed Brother and keep up the good work!!

Most people I think, fully understand. Thank you for these kind words, I appreciate you and appreciate you watching! Thank you and bless you as well!!

The porch rockers were up against the wall to keep the chickens off. There was nothing worse than coming home to find a neighbor waiting to visit only to find chicken poop in the rocker. When I was a child we always knew when someone wasn't home by the position of the porch rockers.

Justin, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. But I'm glad y'all were able to spend time together. Those stories about the rocking chairs and church bells are great reminders about how life was slower and people were closer to each other before technology took off. I do remember as a child that sitting on the porch together on Sundays and visiting family and friends was just part of the fabric of life. Your story about the church bells reminds me of how blessed I am to live in a neighborhood with several churches and they ring their bells and chimes at certain times of the day every day of the week, as well as at weddings and funerals. For instance, the Catholic Church chimes a hymn every day at 3:00 pm, "The Hour of Divine Mercy", the hour Jesus died. It's so comforting and grounding in these crazy times. It not only feels grounding to the Lord in the present, but I also feel a little more grounded to the past and its traditions. There was a time in Europe when no building in a town was allowed to be higher than the church steeple. The church was always the tallest building in every town as a reminder. I always pause to listen when the bells and chimes go off if I can. It's so comforting. (Don't worry about the mill pressure. It will happen when it happens. I can see that it would be an absolute learning experience bringing all that together. People often project their own expectations with no understanding.)❤

Haven’t made a comment in awhile but sorry to hear about your grandmothers half sister but I do appreciate what you passed on from jerry. Thanks for the upload as always brother.

@@metcalfmills5679 you probably remember the “Appalachian stories Heartlamd Series”. A collection of stores about Appalachian life done in the 80s from a tv station in Knoxville. I found it on you tube. I remember a couple episodes about Mills. If you have never seen them you may be interested. Love your channel.
