- In this fifth and final part of a multi-session series, MESA artists Jamie Humphries runs through an 80’s style Hard Rock track inspired by Edward Van Halen, showcasing medium to high gain tones available from the Fillmore 50 combo. This track focuses on higher gain using both the “Drive” and “Hi” modes on the two channels. This track was recorded and performed on an early 90’s Music Man EVH signature model, with medium output custom EVH DiMarzio pickup’s, for that classic “Brown Sound”. This track also showcases how the Fillmore 50 handles pedals, and features an MXR EVH Flanger and Phaser.
Our first tone is our main driven rhythm tone that is featured throughout this performance. This tone has a thick, tight low end, for plenty of thump, with the mid range boosted to achieve that familiar mid boost heard in Eddie’s legendary tone. The treble and presence are pushed to achieve some top end bite, helping this thick tone cut through in the mix. The DRIVE mode is being used on this tone. The EVH Flanger is also used on occasions with this first tone.
Our second tone features a similar EQ setting to our first tone, with the bass rolled off slightly, and also features a slightly lower gain setting. This tone is used during the verse, for a tight palm muted “Van Halen 1” inspired chord arpeggio riff, referencing the classic Eddie tone.
Our third tone can be heard during the “post solo” break down, which feature atmospheric “topped” harmonic chords. This tone has the gain backed off, for a slightly pushed tone, with the reverb dialed in for some ambience. The bass was rolled off while the mid was pushed to aid the performance of tapped harmonics. This tone was also used for a second “recorded” guitar part using the EVH Phase 90.
Our fourth tone uses the “HI” mode, with the gain fully pushed for a smooth yet aggressive distortion, ideal for flowing legato and tapping lines, as well as tapped harmonics. The bass is dialed in to produce a rich low end, while the mid and presence were pushed to allow the tone to cut through the mix. Although the gain is fully pushed, the sound remains dynamic, and defined. The EVH Phase 90 was used during the first half of the main solo, and during the outro licks.

I love your demos man! You always show the amps in a mix. Such useful information!
This has been an incredibly thoughtful series of videos. The amp seems versatile. Thank you for making them. Bravo!
Got my Fillmore 50 head yesterday put it up against my buddys Fuchs ODS II and now he is getting one. My 4th Mesa head and by far my favorite.
Another Van Halen fan boy !!
Well played
Crushing tones, playing is absolutely spot on. What's not to like? Puts a big smile on my face to hear this sonic heaven. Thanks a lot, mate.
Good sound, tasteful playing!
Great performance and very insightful video! Hats off to Jamie!!
Great performance , interesting composition, especially the guitar intro is really getting the beast roaring and thundering. Wow !
The best of the 5! Nice job!!!
Absolutely Fantastic job. I am so glad I bought one of these!
Jamie was perfect for these vids, gawd i really want that amp now, incredible very versatile
Its worth every penny...I got the 50w head & 2x12 cabinet absolutely love it
@@bflo5210 you can't go wrong with a Boogie. I recently purchased a Mark V. Boogie amps rule!
@@tinpenny4474 I’ve been eyeing the Mark V since now that i’ve gotten good enough to actually make good use of it i want a better amp, is it eq sensitive? And is it versatile?
Timbre mto massa.
Abraços e bends
Awesome sounding amps. Have a good day.
Awesome tone and playing 👍
fantastic playing and what an amp! I have 20+ year old dual rectifier but I am thinking of getting a Filmore 50 head. My style has changed and I would love spring reverb
I'd love to see you do these kinds of videos with the older amps as well. I'd like to be able to get 80s tones from my Roadster or Rectoverb.
Totally kick Ass !
I am totally mind blown!
I didn't expect the filmore to be more than a cleanish amp
❤️
Sounds great brother. Not just the amp. Playing also
This sound nothing like EVH and this is why I love my Fillmore 50 the most
Call me crazy, but i think Jamie is a fan of Music man. Just a feeling I can't shake.
I heard some Jake E Lee in Tone #3! I want this amp.
killer sound, killer playing, killer amp. 100%
Great demo!
What microphone did you use and where can I get that fancy tripod?
Dang even his shirt matches the EVH vibe
iv been a fan of edward van hagar since their firs cd 5150. all i can say is that edday van hagar lives in yo fingers
I'm first! Yo Mesa! I own three. Road King v2 head w 2x12 Road King Cab (need another), Electra Dyne 2x12 (one V30 one C90), and the new TC-100 Head with 2x12 upright slant top cab. I love Mesa! Peace. D
This amp sounds GREAT! Wow
I'm a Mesa guy too since forever. I have a Stiletto Trident head, 2x12 cab (v30s), and 1x12 cab (EV12L). Back in the late 80s/early 90s I had a Mk 1 combo and then a Rectifier half-stack.
@@evanward4303 hey, that's really cool! Yes I've had earlier boogie's, as well. In fact, the one I should have never sold was the Mark 3 Simulclass "green stripe" head, and 2x12 upright slant face cab w the celestion black shadow open back top, and evm bottom sealed and ported with that big metal grill. Should have never sold them. I need THAT tone back. Lol. Peace.
@@dvincentblack Yeah... the one that got away, right? I feel the same about the Mark 1. Cream colored original early 70s (non graphic eq), EV loaded, 60/100 watts, with road case. It's probably a collector's item nowadays.
👍🎸
I would love to add this amp to my stable. Sounds great.
Forget Fillmore and have Humphries play more Van Halen style.
Sounds great, but lacks the crisp sparkle of eddie's tone
давайте скинемся ему на штаны, все деньги ушли на аппаратуру, человек не может купить себе джинсы
It’s unique ..... not Eddie , but very nice
Spend some money for new trousers.........
Yeah, way too old to be wearing ripped jeans. I stopped wearing ripped jeans by my late teens and that was in ‘87...lol
I’m going to go out on a limb and say you’re too old to be telling other people how to dress. There are no rules and one of the biggest things to learn in life is to be comfortable in your own skin and look however you want to. Kinda sad that your biggest take away from the video is judging how someone else dresses.
The bass needs to be cut off, super woofy at points
You need to get to your gp and have your ears syringed!
Yeah, agreed. Has that typical Mesa boom that on some of the amps can be tricky to dial in. They can have a pronounced fundamental hump that feels too separated from the rest of the sound so getting a sound that pushes in the chest as opposed to shake your feet can be tough. It’s why recto’s are tough to record. The huge bass is more like a sub than a cohesive thumping guitar tone. A 57 will just shelve those lows and you’ll wonder why it sounds so thin on “tape” vs what you have in the room sound. I will say my MKV has a great low end that really thumps (especially CH1 and ch2) but my T-Verb and Quad Pre get more of that sub bass thing. If I run the quad pre into the MKV return and set the MKV to ch3 and extreme it becomes a thumper.
