Descendants 4 Might Just Be The Best Film In The Franchise

- The Descendants franchise recently got a fresh instalment titled Descendants: The Rise of Red. Now let’s be real here anyone that’s a Descendants fan whilst hyped for this movie probably wasn’t expecting it to reach the heights of the previous trilogy. How could it possibly? But this film has truly shocked me. How could it be so good?! Recency bias may be coming into play but I’d venture to say it’s the best of the bunch and I can’t wait for more! Enjoy.
This definitely feels like a 2 part story. We'll definitely get to see the original prank in the next one, with the lesson being that Red can't change the past, but can help her mother heal

After watching the film, I immediately wondered why the mad hatter's role couldn't have been replaced with the white rabbit, considering how close the white rabbit is to the queen because of his job and the pocket watch thing
I mean he is the son of the mad hatter not necessarily the mad hatter so but it still wouldn’t really fit for him and it would also wouldn’t fit the white rabbit either cause he doesn’t seem like the type either he was like the announcer of the Queen of hearts

When Bridgette said Ella was her only friend, I was sure that Ella was going to pull the prank and was disappointed.
And why would her only friend prank her like that.
Not to mention Bridget wouldn't mind a stupid prank, what actually broke her was that she was turned into a gross monster and there was no one by her side to be there for her in the time of her greatest need, showing love ain't it.
@@kubat4925 also when Uliana opened the book, she and her gang freezed and that would have happened even without Red and Chloe intervening, which makes me sure that it was Ella who betrayed her because QoH said that the people in Auredon are fake, but everyone in Uliana's gang openly expressed their hatred for Bridget so it must be Ella who betrayed her (but why?)

@@FINDTHEMAGICINYOURSELF123 Not necessarily you know. Without Red and Chloe interfering it's them who set off the swords and the owls and they could've taken longer to take them out. Heck Merlin would be coming by the time they have a book and Uliana has no time to read it there. She would later make someone else read it for her.
And mind you, once she turned into the monster NO ONE was by her side, even though Bridget was making them delicious sweet, and being nothing but nice and generous for quite some time. But in the end, it didn't pay off and she had no friends. So of course she says people are fake.
Ella would never betray her. There is no why would she do that because she didn't do that. Bridget doesn't even blame Ella for the prank to begin with. She blames her for not being there for her when she needed her and being off with her prince. Pay attention.
@@kubat4925 well first of all, you could say these things a bit friendlier, without "mind you" and "pay attention" (I only watched the movie once so far) but I have to admit you have a point... maybe Ella was just afraid to loose her, but then why does she hang out with the prince and not her? I guess only time and the second movie will tell
It’s nice to see someone feel positive about this movie even though I thought it was horrible. I love seeing different perspectives. I thought this movie was all setup and no payoff. They should have just made it a limited series instead of a movie and then released that in multiple parts. It literally felt like half a movie that wasted most of its characters. They set up that dance so much only to never show it only for the movie to end with the antagonists being frozen in a weirdly comedic way. But I’m happy to hear that there a people who enjoyed it. Hopefully that means they’ll finish the story and have it take place directly after so that it can feel more complete. It really felt like half of a movie ngl
Exactly I felt the same way about the movie
My major problem with this movie is the fact that they use the prank as an excuse for Red becoming a tyrannical ruler. Sure, I could see her becoming meaner, but not a murderer! In the actual movie, she chops off heads, abuses her daughter, has a curfew stricter than an Asian mom’s, and tries to take over Auradon. If you’re killing hundreds of innocent people, I’m gonna need a better reason then “Oh I got pranked.”
It was not the prank that was the issue.
Bridget was a homeschooled girl who got to experience high school for the first time in Merlin Academy and she also was a bit of a new girl to an extent. She tried to make friends as she had none but Ella by being nice and sweet. She genuinely wanted some connection at Merlin Academy and was even willing to reach out to the VKs while still remaining true to her generous, kind self.
However, Uliana's prank made Bridget realise something, that no matter how much you try, you can't be liked. In the end, when she got turned into a monster on her very first dance, no one took her side. Everyone turned their backs on her, even Ella was more busy having her own fairy tale with Prince Charming than being there for her. In the end, kindness gave her nothing and the one who got the last laugh was not the one who was beloved but feared. Bridget took this to heart and decided that if love ain't it, then fear shall be it, and it doesn't help that Looking Glass would show her the future where she is a dictator and a murderer so if that's her destiny and their's no one on her side willingly, then she shall be the most feared queen that is known to a man.
So yeah it was not a prank, it was being friendless when shit hits you that turned her into a murderer.

@@kubat4925 That’s still just way too fictional of an explanation. I could understand her suddenly becoming very calloused and cold, but a murderer? Your morals shouldn’t flip on their head within seconds. It just isn’t realistic tbh
My only real issue is that this movie feels like it’s missing a giant climax or set piece and we’re supposed to believe that everything just worked out in the end with no consequences. I get that there’s only so much they could do within a 90 minute timeframe, and they were clearly setting up more to come in the eventual followup, but I kept waiting for this big climax to happen that never did and it felt like the story for this movie wrapped up way too quickly. I never understood the criticism of a movie “just ending” until now. At the very least, spiderverse had a clear climactic moment with Miguel and the spider society.
Otherwise, I overall really loved this movie and had a lot of fun watching it. My biggest compliment of course definitely goes to the increased budget, which really sets this movie apart from its predecessors, in a really good way. I really love the new protagonists Red and Chloe, and it’s clear the actresses have a lot of respect for this franchise. I also thought the moral of how being a good person isn’t just about following the rules was really good, and it fits well within this franchise’s story. I also really loved Rita Ora in this, who is clearly having a lot of fun as the Queen of Hearts, as well as Brandy Norwood, and I got so giddy when Cinderella and Charming sang “So this is love” at the start of the movie, that was really cute. Seeing both her and Paolo reprise their roles for this movie was such a treat. Bridgette and Ella were fun characters as well, even if Ella’s storyline felt a little incomplete, and I thought Uliana was a fun villain. Hades and Maleficent being there felt kinda fanservice-y, but their inclusion at least made sense and I did enjoy their scenes. Uma and the Fairy Godmother tragically did not get enough screentime, but I get it since this isn’t really their movie this time around. And yeah, the Cameron/Carlos tribute was sweet and got me really misty eyed. I do have a few questions about the new lore we’re given in this movie, but I’m sure it’s explained in the books (which I haven’t read myself).
Again, a good movie, and I’m sure my problems with this will be resolved in the inevitable followup
I completely agree. I feel like the 1st act and 2nd act were good, but the 3rd act was nonexistent.
And I didn't even think there would be a continuation, I thought it ended here and that's it, let's see what they do.
It's only act 1 so the sequel would be act 2 so it makes sense
Yeah for me I think the only major problem I had with this film was the law to be honest, that's the only part that I just was so confused by because I haven't read the books either and I felt like the beginning of this film was so disconnected from the original trilogy to the point where there had to have been a book that came before or something, good film but they changed the law so drastically that it feels very different in my opinion.
I read the prequel book and it mostly develops Red's character and gives us a good idea of what wonderland is like under the queens control. Also the abuse Red suffers is just heartbreaking imo.
Also the book acknowledges Auradon pretty often and i found many of the call backs very fun. It's mentioned that wonderland knows that Mal is now the queen, so wonderland does seem to be able to get an insight of the Kingdom but somehow manages to stay hidden. That's quite interesting. So yeah i do recommend the book a lot
My only complaint about this movie is that, due to it being way shorter than the 3 previous Descendants movies, the ending feels very rushed and the cliffhanger is quite frustrating.
The Cameron/Carlos tribute in this movie was really sweet and I got super misty eyed seeing his picture appear. I appreciate that they don’t shy away from the fact that Cameron’s gone in this movie, or in the tv special. It’d be really easy to say that Carlos is off somewhere doing something with Jane or the other VKs, because how do you explain something like that to your primarily younger audience? But they actually go out of their way to acknowledge the fact that what happened happened and Cameron’s gone. And it’s pretty clear China wasn’t acting in that scene either, she’s clearly mourning her friend that she knew since childhood.
Props to Disney for handling something as completely out of their control as this with such respect for both the character and Cameron himself.
As much as I despise this movie, I really liked that scene because they acknowledged his death instead of just brushing it off

@@hiiamloren5087 i think most of us watching this movie thought that Cinnderella was the one who did this prank but that didnt show, idk but well when red and chloe came to Ella's house chloe broke a vase resulting in ella being grounded so she couldn't get the recipe to the VKs, maybe she was envolved in this prank thats why Bridget was so mad at cinnderella when she met her

Bridget didn't become evil because of a prank it was because she got blamed for eating the last cookie by her sister and hit her head, time consequences didn't occur, fairy godmother wasent the same age as Cinderella, she was ageless because she was a fairy. The songs other than red weren't good, the wigs (Bridget's, Chloe's, etc.) where absolutely awful, for some reason red and Chloe could pretend to be students with no paperwork or anything, Hades was a God, not a student, he didn't have an age like fairy godmother, and more.

@@The-Busy-Beeeee I admit, I defended this move.. but before it came out, everyone was bashing it because it wasent the old cast and I was defending it, though I think this movie has alot of wasted potential. The editing and cast is amazing.
6:09 Regarding Chad, it’s established that he’s Chloe’s older brother and that he was away at college, with King Charming’s reason for not going with Ella and Chloe is that he was going to his tournament. Hope that helps!
Honestly, the only issue I really have with the movie was that the ending felt kinda rushed. I understand this plot is going to be a two-parter, but I think it could've been done better.
The budget for this movie was 70 million. Let that sink it for a minute
I like the first 90% of the movie, not perfect but good for what it is, but that ending was such a letdown. I watched with a whole bunch of friends at theater camp and the room erupted into outrage when they got back to their time like I've never seen before. I think it would have been better if the ending was more clearly a cliffhanger, that would have made it more fullfilling.
I liked it but it felt rushed. And I was hoping we'll see the ball.
To be fair, it was supposed to be a very quick incognito mission. Red and Chloe are time traveling so they had to remain low profile so it would be best if they didn't attend the ball to not be caught in some magical portraits or photos. And they also have to hurry so Cinderella won't get killed.

I know that they are going to make more movies but what really didn't like was the ending. Where I thought that ella would one who pulled the prank. It seems like that is what they were going for. But instead is seems like a fake out ending with a twist but it never happened.
Honestly the movie kind of sucked for me. None of the songs were catchy and they didn’t have the same ‘vibe’ as the originals. The plot has so many holes that I can’t even get into and the characters kinda seemed a bit flat for me, especially Chloe. Also we didn’t even get to see the dance and the whole time travel thing is super messy. I mean, maybe it’ll be discussed in the 5th movie but so many things would have changed. For starters, Red wouldn’t even be Red anymore. Her whole personality would change along with her name, clothes, and past. The villains also felt flat. I mean Uliana was kind of cool but the others didn’t really do anything. Especially Maleficent and Hades who were the most powerful villains in the original. The timeline is also kinda iffy but when has it not been. But I really loved the tribute they made to Cam in the start. I feel like for this kind of movie you have to turn off your brain to enjoy it or else you’ll spend the whole time criticizing it. Just my opinion tho
Most of the side characters who had interesting stories had like 5 seconds of screen time and the main characters just felt like dumbed down versions of mal and evie with way less depth and a more monotone colour palette.
Honestly the film had potential, but I think the writing was a little lazy. I could be wrong tho these are js my opinions
1. There’s not rlly a clear theme u could take away. At first it seems like it’s gonna be love and how everyone deserves it, but then it briefly goes into gray morality and the greater good, but then in the end it’s about how ppl can change and we get to choose our own paths. And don’t get me wrong these are all great themes and having multiple themes in one film can work, but they felt kinda crammed and none rlly had time to fully flesh out and have to do w all the big plot point
2. The acting was not rlly the best. No offense to the actors or anything I’m sure they’re very talented, but I couldn’t see the chemistry between them and tbh no one felt like they had any personality or anything.
3. The plot itself wouldn’t work because (I thought this and heard it in the Alex Meyers review) they go out of their way to talk about how the book can’t be opened by trouble makers, making this part of one of the themes, so then how could the villain kids in the original timeline have opened it to begin with??? Obviously they’re doing it for trouble so how’d they even pull the prank off in the first place? Even in the altered timeline it shows us they got frozen by the books magic, and the same thing would’ve happened if Red and Chloe didn’t do anything so what was the point? Was it js to justify that Red was a good person?
4. The songs were all kinda not great imo. I can’t rlly remember any after js watching it last night. My friend mentioned this before I watched it and I completely agree that there were way too many talking parts in literally every song. I feel like almost every song was sort of the same. They had some pop musical show tune part, but then they threw in random rapping parts which led into js full on dialogue between characters. And I think throughout the movie I was trying to find a song that didn’t have any talking parts but I didn’t find a single one. They all had the rapping-talking bits in the middle of it and idk if that’s what everyone’s into but I disliked it very much. I feel like a couple songs like that is definitely okay, but to have every single song basically made the exact same way???
5. The choreography wasn’t rlly at its best. I don’t think it was necessarily bad so to speak, but it wasn’t rlly good either. It felt simple compared to the other films and idk maybe it was js the songs (like I mentioned before) that wouldn’t go along w different choreography, but I do feel like the moves weren’t rlly impressive or fun
6. Half the movie was js songs. This is such an easy fix too and maybe the biggest problem. I mentioned above how they didn’t seem to have enough time for anything and it’d be so easy to js cut out the songs, to make room for actual plot development. Plus, I’ve also expressed how I didn’t rlly like the songs they had so this might’ve been a good thing all around, it’d let them be able to put more effort into the few songs they had and maybe end up w a few rlly good songs instead of like 15 not too great songs. And I could be totally wrong on this part, js speculating, but maybe they had so many songs to cover up the lack of chemistry between the characters? Instead of having cringy scenes of acting that didn’t flow well they instead js decided to use a song to push forward the movie, which would also explain why there’s so many talking parts. And this is normally what songs are for I think, to move the story along when it’s easier to sing over say. I wouldn’t say the movie is wrong for this, but they definitely over did it in my opinion
7. They did way too much tell and not show. I noticed this so much in the movie especially in the beginning when they’re setting up the exposition for Red and Chloe. Ofc there was a lot of show, like Red vandalizing everything, showing she’s rebellious and resents her mother, even tho Uma narrated that literally seconds before so… yeah. And towards the middle, Chloe not knowing how to use a broom shows she’s a princess who is slightly incompetent. And in the end where Red opens the book and it shows how she’s changed and become a good person. But tbh these all felt a little on the nose, and also they were overshadowed by all the telling parts. Like Red talking about how she doesn’t wanna be like her mom? They could’ve easily shown this by js having the scenes where she doesn’t like her mom evil ways and has a hard time punishing ppl. And with Chloe, they js say how she’s a good person and a rule follower. But there are so many better ways to show this. An example they actually do is her saying how a lot of things are against Auradon rules and how they can’t js break in places. This shows us she’s a rule follower and has strict morals, which would imply that she’s a good person. This movie has a habit of that, telling them showing

The only negative I have on this movie is Ursula’s sister. Uliana is a character created by the descendants to be her sister which isn’t a big deal but if you’re going to replace Ursula’s canon sister with uliana…why have the son of the canon sister to Ursula in Uliana’s gang!

there is a whole other act missing i am sure, because what do you mean they spend the whole movie hyping up castlecoming as being the place chloe's parents fell in love and where the prank that changes everything for bridge happens, and then DON'T SHOW US CASTLECOMING?! like they clearly were setting up to reveal that perhaps ella was actually the one to do the prank, and when they had them go back to the future thinking everything was okay after they got the book, i was certain that they would get there, and see that nothing changed, revealing that they missed something and that would be the sequel bait. it wouldn't have been a good choice, but at least it would've made sense, cuz it would establish this new era as the one where they time travel every movie. but no, they went back, and everything was fixed, no lesson, no nothing, just oh, your mom has been terrible to you your whole life, just go back in time and change every single thing about her, don't worry about maybe learning a lesson about forgiveness, or having your direct words and actions affect bridge after the prank in a way that would make you an active participant in changing your destiny, or talk to your mom in the present day and change her there, none of those things

The movie is bad. The plot makes no sense. The songs are basically all the same structure and somehow they all suck. Pacing is off, most things they tried to set up never paid off, it's just... Bad. what is happening here

You never experienced the glory of the Brandi Cinderella, did you? It was colorblind casting, and it was a huge deal at the time. This Cindy and Charming are the same actors from that movie.

I watched the movie and I have comments:
First of all great movie. I loves the characters, the costumes, the locations. The story was nice.
We have new (/old) characters: Hades, Maleficent, Uliana, Morgie, Hook, Cinderella, Charming, Alladin, Jasmine, Zellie, Fay, Bridget, Ella, Maddox, Chloe and Red (maybe more)
I loved the idea of time traveling and the prank in the past that turned Bridget evil and the 5 VK’s.
And the songs…THE SONGS. They were awesome. Even though they were more modern, they still made it fantasy-like. Life is sweeter has got to be my favorite.
Uliana and Hook were kinda replacements of Uma and Harry, but Morgie was an entirely new character. Kids watching Disney probably don’t even know about Morgana and that’s what makes Morgie, her son, mysterious.
Unfortunately, he didn’t do really much. He introduced himself in the song Life is sweeter and looked really cool, and in the song Perfect Revenge he agreed to Hades' suggestion. But that’s really all the villainous things he did. In the end, he sat in a tree, wet because of the rain, barking and howling like a dog, kinda looking like a fool. I don’t know how to feel about this.
Also question, why is Uliana the big bad and the leader. Yes, she may be the daughter of Poseidon, a god, but Hades is a actual god, Maleficent is the mistress of all evil and Morgie is the son of the ancient dark witch Morgana. She only has the power to ask her cauldron for help, which Evie could easily do with her mirror, and she has tentacles. How is the the leader of the VK's?
The ending of the movie was missing something. Halfway throughout the movie, I had theories:
Either the prank succeeds and Ella gets framed, Bridget feels betrayed by her bff and he starts her villain arc. Or she doesn’t really gets pranked and an accident happens and she thinks she gets pranked. After one of these things happens, Red and Chloe think they solved everything and return to the present, finding out that nothing has changes, Red gives an emotional speech to her mom, she gets that is was a misunderstanding and she becomes good.
This is how I would have ended the film. Uliana was already bullying Bridget, so she could’ve expected that she would prank her, than why did she start her villain arc and switch her whole personality after she got pranked by Uliana. It would be more logical if she got upset if she found out her friends were the ones that pranked her. But after a year of getting bullied, she stayed calm, but 1 prank of Uliana turned her evil, nah.
But the actors, they were great. This was good acting and singing. I loved watching this movie and would definitely recommend it.
I love the descendants franchise and everything about it. I also loved that they honored Cameron Boyce with that one scene.

Of course no hate, I'm glad you liked the movie a lot, but here are my thoughts regarding what you wrote. I hope it will clear some things up a little for you.
I think neither Maleficent or Hades at the time mastered their powers. So far Maleficent's best trick is thorns and not her ability to turn into a dragon and Hades so far is only a pyromaniac when he can do much more. It's simple to say they just started their careers and Uliana is ahead of them but with time it will change.
Perhaps the reason Uliana is in charge is because back in the past Bridget took off her head. If it was someone else as a leader, they wouldn't be with us today. Morgie also doesn't seem to realise yet just how much power he actually holds in himself. I'm certain however that Uliana has more tricks up her sleeves than you give her credit for. She tries to best out Ursula and Ursula is quite powerful.
What the ending was truly missing was a big bang. Otherwise, everything else is fine. The third act of the movie is just tamer in comparison to what we have, but it should be given considering we're time traveling and that's not the best scenario to have a final battle or big dance-offs when neither happened or Red and Chloe shouldn't be present at.
Bridget wasn't mad because Ella pulled a prank on her (though kudos to you by saying she was framed first), she was mad because Ella wasn't there for her when she needed her most. Heck, Bridget was less concerned about the prank and about how everyone turned their backs on her. Queen of Hearts doesn't even take out her anger on Uma who is Uliana's niece and has a very strong family resemblance, so it was never the prank that was an issue. But it did happen mind you.
If there was no prank Ella would explain it to her sooner or later or point out that there never was any prank, but even 40 years later she still points out that Bridget WAS pranked.
The prank from Uliana was as Queen of Hearts points out downright cruel. She got turned into a monster on her very first day, and after so long trying to be friends with everyone by being sweet and kind, it never paid off for her, so it's better to be feared than loved as Uliana who is feared got the last laugh in the end after all.

Morgie's only magical feat was having a snake eye and saying he's "Serpentine". AT most he probably can transform into a snake and that's about it. I tell you he really isn't living up to his mom's power yet. And he's a teenager, of course, he needs to figure out his powers first, teen superheroes are novices.
Bridget had her revenge on Uliana and probably took her life and started her tradition of cutting off the heads of all her enemies. After all, we never heard of Uliana and that could be perhaps because she's dead. However Red and Chloe changed the future and Bridget didn't grow up to be a murderer so what if Uliana is now in the present waiting for her own vengeance?

While I enjoyed this movie for what it was, what bothered me was that there seemed to be absolutely no 3rd act (i.e. climax, conclusions, etc.). The 1st act and the 2nd act were both good, but it felt like the writers ran out of time and just did whatever they could to wrap up the story in 3-5 mins.

If the cookbook was enchanted to freeze any bad people who open it, how did the prank happen in the first place?
1. Hades has yet to realise his true potential and become the God he's destined to be. Greek Gods were born after all. They didn't just start to exist with all their power. Same for Maleficent, even states herself back in the first movie that she used to be like Mal, she too used to be insecure and hasn't realised the true extent of her power.
2. Descendants are pretty much an alternate universe where the fairy tales happen at the same time and are set in the more modern day. Here the immortal and eternal beings age normally and since both Maleficent and Hades appear young, they are younger than characters who appear to be ancient.
3. Uliana may come back now that the future has changed.
4. Probably because Chloe is actually a true blood successor while Chad is most likely adopted. There is a theory that Charming and Ella had fertility issues at rest and Chloe was a miracle child to them, but Chloe is ten years younger than Chad.
5. Since VKs would set off Merlin's traps without Red and Chloe's intermission, it could be that Uliana would grow cautious, or before they can actually get rid of said traps, enough time passes that they have no choice but to run as Merlin would be approaching. Then perhaps some other VK opened the book and Uliana was spared and she realised she needed someone else to do it for her. However since Red and Chloe took care of the traps for Uliana and Uliana has a tendency to rash into stupid decisions when cocky, she got frozen when she wasn't supposed to get frozen.

Okay so i first taught Uliana was the sister of Ursula that was introduced in the second Ariel Movie.... But turns out that woman was called Morgana. Damn... They legit could have used Morgana as Ursulas Sister!
But that would mess up their alliterative family name obsession they have going on.
The only problem with this movie is that it doesn’t have a climax. And it’d fix the HUGE plot hole which is that if Uliana got the cookbook ANYWAY and it FROZE HER then how did she do the prank in the first place??? This is why we needed a climax or plot twist of some sort!
My main problem was the outfit Red wore for most of the movie when the first outfit she wore was infinitely better!
HARD disagree. I genuinely think that this is the worst film in the franchise. There are so many plot holes in the movie that it becomes distracting. The pacing is terrible, with the plot taking way too long to get off the ground. The costumes and wigs looked so cheap and bad. In the original movies, all of the characters had their own color schemes, which allowed them to have a multitude of outfits that still fit their individual personalities. But in this movie, the two leads just have one primary color each for their costumes, and that's it. The wigs look so bad, too. Then, there are the plot holes. There are too many to count, but I will say this. This movie completely ruins the timeline. In the original trilogy, it was HEAVILY implied that these movies took place 20 years after the Disney movies (Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, etc.). But here, apparently, all of the Disney characters were already going to school together. Aladdin and Jasmine were already a couple, Hades and Maleficent were high school sweethearts, and Fairy Godmother was just some teenager who couldn't do magic well. Also, the ending just sucked. They spent so much time building up Castlecoming, but then never showed it. The climax was underwhelming. Also, the villains were just goofy and not an actual threat. Also, most of the songs suck. There are a couple of okay ones, but the majority of them had so much auto tune applied to them that it was impossible to like them. They all also sounded the same, and none of them were particularly memorable. The only thing this movie does better than the original is that it has better CGI.

@monikaaaax3 Something that was really off-putting was the movie's reaction to Chloe suggesting that they tell Merlin. I get it's the "goody two shoes" answer, but it's not a bad idea. If anything, it is far less risky and wouldn't blow their cover.

When they got back to the present and we saw that Bridget was good, I paused just to see how much longer it was and was shocked that that was the end. I could've sworn we were at the halfway point and were about to see the consequences of their actions (my money was on them accidentally erasing Chloe from existence because, with Bridget not getting pranked, Ella would have spent the night hanging out with her and not falling for Charming). before having to go to the past and undoing the mess they made.
The biggest problem with the movie is the lack of time. If they had about 120 minutes instead of 90, it would've been better. (I think the movies leans towards 6.5, maybe 7 territory)
Genuinely I agree about the plot hole with the prank. Which begs the question how did the prank ever happen? It's possible that it wasn't the real prank, it also doesn't fit with the song at the beginning of the movie with the mums and how Bridget was talking about people being 2 faced. So I think the only reason why they were able to change the future is because of something else they did that changed past events, such as Ella not being able to go to Crown Coming.
Ella likely did go to the dance. In the OG cinderella story, she wasn't allowed to go to the ball but made it there with the help of the fairy godmother. So I assume she wouldn't be able to go the dance either the vase was broken or not. It makes me kinda sad we didn't get to see a moment with Ella and young fairy godmother giving her a dress to the ball (would have made a great musical number). it would have been so nice and cute to see. but anyway I don't completely understand why people think Ella was supposed to be the bad guy because idk what she would gain from that. I did think there was a possibility but the second I saw young Ella, I didn't think it would happen. I kinda hope there will be a part 2 to the movie (even tho I didn't like it) so it could have a fuller and rounder story that makes sense. Just realizing how long this is... sorry.
The Queen of Hearts' guards need to be replaced with some competent protectors. Aladdin, Jasmine, the 1 girl that's said to be Rapunzel's daughter, and Morgie were wasted.

I’m glad you enjoyed this film! For me there was a lot that kept me enjoying it fully, but there were a lot of fun ideas here! I enjoyed at least two of the songs, Brandy and Paolo Montalban being cast was cool, and the Cameron Boyce tribute was sweet. My big problems were with the storytelling. There was so much setup that never paid off (I’m assuming it’s for the second movie, but hinging your payoff on a future movie isn’t a good idea because it could end up not being good or disappointing), and the continuity issues hurt my soul. A lot of the songs felt mediocre. I know Descendants’ songs tend towards the pop style but I always prefer the songs that actually further the story *because* these movies are supposed to be musicals.
I found myself wanting to watch the movie for Ruby Rose Turner and Kylie Cantrall, because I really want to see their careers bloom past Disney… and I basically grew up alongside Ruby lol
But it was an enjoyable film, I can find myself rewatching it to see if I missed something… I rewatched it again to see Drizella bc apparently they cut out A LOT of her scenes to where she only shows up in the background of Perfect Revenge.

Ok so my theory is that the reason they needed to get Ella grounded is because she's the one who pranks Bridgette. Because even if Red and Chloe hadn't gone into the past, Uliana and her minions would've been frozen.

i just really didn’t like the fact that there was a pre-auradon prep thing. and that the villains were going to it with the royals. i felt like they should’ve been at the isle of the lost or been REALLY bad and not getting along at all. also the way they were called the “VKs” but they WERE the villains. that’s not the daughter of maleficent or the son of hades, that IS maleficent and hades. i really wanted more from wonderland, actually seeing other people and residents and the wonderlous-ness of wonderland. instead of just red everything. and it pissed me off TO NO END that they kept on interrupting the songs with “witty” one liners from the other characters. “love ain’t it” and “get your hands dirty” were actually good, but after every line chloe would say something and it just took away so much from the song. it was infuriating. the quirky acting, bad character design, bad special effects, and INSANE amounts of auto tune are to be expected from a descendants movie, so i can look past all that stuff and see it as charm. it was a pretty good movie. enjoyable and charming with how bad or mediocre it was. i did feel like some of the plot points didn’t hit as hard as they wanted and that they missed on what they were going for. also, it just feels so unfinished

Really it was mid to me. The songs were fine but most of them seemed placed in weird spots. Especially love ain't it. Like it happens while they're traveling and it serves no purpose expect of further explaining Red's mother's motives and reasoning. Also it really lacked in making me think that Chloe and Red are friends. They're more they like frienimes than friends. Plus the ending kindof was sucky. Nothing happens and then when we see a happy ending we just get narrative telling that there will be consequences to the time traveling. It didn't hook me. Show me foreshadowing that there will be consequences instead of telling me!!!! And then have Uma do her ominous narration! It just honestly felt so disappointing as a return movie to the descendants world.

I haven't seen the film yet but I'm confused about a thing or 2: Since the first 3 films are connected to the Disney movies how does this connect if all the heroes and villains attend a 'school'? Is this connected or do we put it under the 'multi-verse' excuse that's been around Disney films and shows lately?
I enjoyed this movie. The first three trilogy movies were great and coming into this movie I had high hopes since the trailers made it seem like it was going to be good and it did meet my expectations. The CGI was better than the first three movies along with the costumes and the wigs. There was more money put behind them and the songs were just amazing. I was a little disappointed when they didn’t show the castle coming, and I didn’t understand the unnecessary addition of Uliana they really could’ve made Ursula the main villain instead of giving her a sister. The ending was a little unsatisfying but then I realized that this is a 2 part story and the next movie will explain the consequences of the Red and Chloe time traveling and I’m just so ready for it. It was also really appreciated how they honored Cameron Boyce in the film.

I only semi enjoyed the story. I have similar complaints i had about Disenchanted where i think the music come to close together. Especially in the middle of he movie. I personally think only 3 songs in the soundtrack are good which are Red, Love aint it and What's my name (Red version). Now story wise i wanted to bring up some things that didn't add up. When Ella brought up the prank to Bridget in the beginning it made it seem that Ella was part of the prank and that it was a harmless prank. Then the scene of the book that im glad Smarty brought up. It felt like a set up for a plot twist
I didn’t think the movie would be so good, this movie is definitely the best out of the other decedents movies, I didn’t expect Wonderland so it was probably bound that this one would be my favorite because I loved Ever After High and my favorite character was Lizzie Hearts, however, Ever After High is still better, especially Lizzie cuz I love her, so it’s no surprise that Red is also my favorite and my favorite song from the movie is the one called Red, it’s a banger and I never thought the movie would be this good and it exceeded my expectations cuz it’s my favorite decedents movie

2:20 In the books, the Isle has a school called Dragon Hall, started by Dr Facilier, but I don't remember if it ever comes up in the movies, so whether it is canon or not is kinda up in the air. The canon of this series is a bit all over the place, between the movies and the various books.
the plot hole with the opening of the book you can see it as if R&C wasn't there the first time then the villains would prob take the book back to their lair and they wasn't all stood close together as book got opened but because they took the book from R&C they just opened it there to rub it in their faces that the villains won changing history because this time round they get caught

I did really like this film and found it to be a good inclusion, however there were a few things that just didn't quite make sense to me, firstly I felt like it was sadly a little bit disconnected from the original trilogy in terms of law, as a lot of things didn't quite make sense with how they were explaining How this new land came to be, and the original I felt like it was done a lot better, it feels like a bit of a rewrite for this new trilogy in terms of our already preestablished law, so it took a little while for me to get into it again I don't know if there is books in between just like there were the original trilogy that might explain stuff, also I do think you're right in that being a prank just doesn't really work and the movies too short we needed it to be a bit longer if you're gonna explain that kind of stuff and then the dance at the end the fact that we don't see it was a missed opportunity they could've had a whole back to the future situation and just didn't do it, so that felt a bit Disappointing. Also not point out the elephant in the room, but Chad is white and his parents are not, I know it's a bit controversial to put this out there, but like you I assumed that there were multiple Prince charming and Cinderella as again in the original trilogy that we had of descendants films it was implied to me at least that our Cinderella was the blonde Cinderella and classic Prince charming from the original Disney cartoon just like with sleeping beauty and Beauty and the Beast etc, but then we rock up with the Roger and Hammerstein live action Prince charming and Cinderella, which again not a bad thing and a great casting, but it feels again like a bit of a rewrite, if there were multiple Cinderella and Prince charming that lived in Cinderella's Berg, like seriously, I think what they're trying to say is that while beast rules over the entire kingdom the other kingdom still have some royalty so Cinderella is still in charge or Cinderella and Prince charming is still in charge in one area and then sleeping beauty is in charge in another area and etc, it's just that beast is like in charge in charge if that makes sense, at least that's the implication I got from the original trilogy and assume it's the same here, again I don't know how the descendants actually works as well the original trilogy wasn't massively consistent with each film it was more consistent than this film and well this film was good again it just felt like a bit of a rewrite and more disconnected from the original trilogy that was despite being bad in terms of CGI etc, still felt like it had more of a established law than this film, like this film just felt quite disjointed again it was a good film and I'm happy it was made I just had like so many questions after watching it, to the point where it felt like even the beginning was so disjointed from the original that there was like a whole chapter missing like I was so sure there must've been a book in between and again I don't know how Canon the books are to the movies a lot of people said that the original movies were Canon into the original books but I don't know what's happening with this new film or how much of a rewrite it is like are we doing whole reboot, because if we are that's fine, it just makes it a little hard to grasp or like fully understand I just felt like we needed a little bit more runtime to have a little bit more explanation in my opinion but again overall it was handled surprisingly well, I just felt like things like the time travel aspect despite actually being handled well, would've just been that much better if there was more runtime and we actually seen the dance and actually seen the prank itself so we knew why she turned out the way she did because again it feels massively dressed and it must've been such a bad prank like as good but you know what I mean like must've worked so well, but we never saw it and it felt like they didn't put enough effort into it so they just ended up not showing it but if they had I feel like that would've been better because then we would've understood why the evil queen became the way she did like maybe we could've seen it play out and then they rewind it back to before it plays out so they know what to do and what would happen to her because they talk about it happening but they don't actually show it and so it just becomes kind of confusing or like underwhelming, but that's just my opinion and again there was nothing overly wrong with this film there were just small things like that that didn't make sense, another thing was Cinderella's hair and Chloe's hair, I don't quite understand Chloe's costuming as she looks like one of the villain kids, I mean yes Audrey did have like coloured hair and coloured clothes but that was kind of after she turned evil and it was kind of established that all the villain kids kind of had the colourful hair and colourful clothing so Chloe looking like one of the VK's just seemed super weird and was like an interesting costume choice in my opinion, because you know people like Audrey or Jane or Ben etc, for the most part looked pretty normal they had like more normal looking clothing even though it was still fairy tail whereas with Chloe I don't actually know why we've got the blue hair situation because what does it have to do with Cinderella I don't actually know it doesn't really make sense especially since Cinderella's dress is actually silver but anyway, I know sometimes it's blue, but the hair thing didn't really make sense to me why is her hair not just black or brown like we know in the Rogers and Hammerstein version she had brown hair so why not just give her brown hair or black hair or whatever, because personally that makes more sense like why the blue hair that makes no sense of Cinderella in my opinion, but again like I said that's just a little nitpick and nothing too bad or too serious, it's just my opinion, but other than that I did really enjoy this film. I was pleasantly surprised in the end despite having some problems with the law and the costuming etc, but overall I am interested to see what they do with this new sequel/reboot situation, I just hope that they continue to do the original trilogy justice and if they make more films, that they try their best to link them together in terms of the law a little bit better just so you feel like you don't have to read books before watching them, that was one of the things I loved about the original trilogy is that although some people had read the books like majority of us hadn't and we could still watch the films without reading the books but like I said when it came to this film I felt like I was missing a whole chapter and I don't know if there is a book that goes in between but I felt like maybe there might've been and that's why I felt so confused but again I don't actually know if there was so please let me know in the comments about that, but other than that it was done surprisingly well and I really enjoyed the film.
