The squatters slashed her tires, broke everything inside the house, poured soil into the garbage disposal, and did so much damage that my coworker cried for days. wherever. Set them off and Make sure you leave the house and have somewhere to go. That’ll choke their asses in their sleep and give them permanent health problems. I betcha they leave then and if they ask why you set it off at night just say oh it was quiet in the house you didn’t think they was there and roaches do come out at night. Lol. Sorry bastards.

Something similar happened to me this weekend. A lady who was supposed to check-out at 11 am maximum ended up checking out at 5:30 pm. From that morning she asked to extend her reservation for two more nights which I agreed to her request… she kept putting on excuses not to pay saying the system didn’t notified her etc… at 3:30 pm Airbnb’s Ambassador tells me she is not willing to cooperate and she yelled on the phone to him saying she was shopping and she didn’t had time to attend the call. The Ambassador recommends me to set on the security alarm, which as soon as I turned it on she begs me to turn it off telling me she will be out of the house in 15 mins (she obviously lied about doing shopping and was actually at the house). I don’t understand how this lady stayed for 6 hours after check-out time without any guilt. She started insulting me calling me every bad word you could imagine, threatening me that she would sued me because I forced her to leave my home with her children. I don’t live in the same city as the house. I did what I could to prevent her staying for free. The police told me what she did was trespassing because she had no authorization to be at someone else’s property since check-out time had passed. I am traumatized by this and hopefully it never happens again.

^ In this case, they weren't criminals. What they did can be viewed as "morally wrong", but, as you heard, their actions were legal by California's standards. The couple could be there up to 30 days. The woman paid them off because she was aware that them staying was totally legal- but she PERSONALLY no longer wanted them there. People need to take this as a learning lesson; if you rent out with Airbnb, stick within their contracts. When you go into other territories and extend stays outside of them, it's YOUR own fault. If she hadn't done that and the people refused to leave, she could have called the police and they would have had to go. People need to read the fine print and take responsibility of their stupid actions.

Kinda along the same line is my story. I own a building with a few rental units. A bar, barber shop and two apartments. When I bought the place years ago I had a woman living in one of the apartments with two high school aged kids. She just stopped paying rent. I tried to evict her, but because of the liberal tennant favoring laws I couldn't. She wound up owing me about $6,000 by the time she moved out. She tried to get my building into the rent-assist program but I refused. Once you get in that program you're pretty much screwed. So, I had to eat the $6k.
Fast forward a couple years. Another woman moves in. She lasts about 3 months then stops paying rent, while proudly driving her Mercedes around town. I drive a Chevy. By the time she moved out she owed me about $3k.
Another tennant I had during Covid. He stopped paying rent. When asked, he said that I couldnt evict him because of covid, and he was correct, even though he was working EXTRA HOURS at the time. And, when he got his "stimulus" check I didnt see a dime. He ended up owing me $5k by the time he left. We had some mutual friends that didnt like the crap he was pulling on me. One day they showed up at the apartment and moved all his crap out, along with his worthless a$$. I had NOTHING to do with that.
So, when people bitch about rent prices going sky high, remember these stories. One of the reasons rent prices are so high... laws that allow this type of crap to happen. So far I've lost my a$$ on those apartments, and I have to make my money up somehow. The other tennants HAVE to pay their rent. Being businesses I can boot them in a heartbeat.

Except this happened with a granny flat/guest house type property and the "guest" pulled the same scam, then proceeded to threaten the owner and try to write him up on things that weren't up to code. But when the owner tried to fix things to be compliant, she refused to let them in for the repairs. She ended up staying there for free for over 6 months I think. You can’t prosecute someone if you don’t know who they are just turn the cameras off. No lawyers going to take this case without evidence or a down payment. She had a friend from work stay with her, because she needed help, and when my sister returned from a weekend in Vegas, the friend boyfriend was at her house living there. My sister told her she cant have him living in her house, and they threaten her that they will call the cops, because she pays half the rent. Well, this was a not a signed documented agreement kind of thing, and when our family heard about what happened..It did not sit well with my brothers. They went to have the couple removed and they locked the bedroom door on them. One of my brothers kicked the door open, and they tried to call the cops but my brothers took their phones and busted it, and had them out with their belongings in matters of 10 minutes. They did call the cops from someone else's phone, and my sister spoke with the cops and told them that she dont live there, and was there for a weekend only, and she did not pay rent. The couple couldn't prove that they were living with her, and so the cops had them escorted off the property. My sister did lie to the cops, but she knew that they couldn't prove anything, and didnt want to deal with the bs of their damn rights..Give a person an inch, and they take a yard! Lesson learned!

Many people rent homes in California because homes at expensive and all the rich people already bought them all(good luck Texas and the rest of the states where these rich people are now moving their businesses to, you’ll have the same problems soon enough). For a normal person who isn’t scamming or trying to do anything wrong, getting evicted overnight is horrible and it can take time to find another affordable place to live so 30 days is reasonable. In a situation like this, well, it’s the homeowners fault for making their home a hotel to begin with.

So the owner posted an ad online to rent his apartment once more, this time free of charge, but specifically catered to declared heavy party people who obliged to make the life of anybody staying in that apartment a living mess. Needless to say, the couple who overstayed moved out after 2 days or so. That was completely legal, too.

That way the law directly deals with the squatters rather than it potentially backfire. @@Babu-kr3cr depends on your perspective and how well you handle the situation. In this case obviously it quite literally pays as she is in favor of the law thanks to her niceties rather than against. Otherwise, you can retain boundaries while still being nice, and people forget to distinguish the two as they sacrifice their protection while simultaneously putting the blame on their behavior when it's not actually the case. It's simply the easier thing to do. There really isn't any deterrent or negativity of being nice. If there is it is minimum in comparison. The main thing is whether or not you allow others to take advantage of it, and even then there isn't much to lose from it when in the face of other alternatives. Even if you fail to succeed at what you were trying to accomplish there's still lessons within that time to learn from if you allow yourself to do so. I think given the outcome and reasonings this case is a good example of that to prove otherwise. Especially since someone else here commented previously supporting that basis of debate. Yes they had to deal with the aftermath, but the other course would have led them to an even greater loss where they wouldn't even be able to have a chance to fix the damages. Even in critical moments being nice provides a calm demeanor that allows the person to think and react more appropriately to the situation. You can still defend yourself be it with words or action. Most other emotions would get you in trouble/may cause you to react in a way that ends up being more at a cost. People like this count on others to react poorly so they can continue to utilize the law in their favor whereas others who react in retaliation have the disadvantage of playing into the other person's hand. In this case, the squatters.

I grew up in the hood so I still have hood connections. Don't want to leave my property and I promise you you will be removed by force, no law enforcement involved.

The first thing that would have happened is a chain would have gone up around that fridge. No more food in the house for them. Next door removed from their room, water turned off to all but my own bathroom which would be deadbolted. Then music would be blasted at all hours day and night. That would be a start for me, by the end they were begging to leave.

I think that you'd start dealing with some legal problems after that. I think they might be able to sue you for unlivable conditions or something like that.

I was thinking something similar. Remove all doors, change locks, remove all of my valuable belongings, turn off utilities, do whatever it takes to make it uncomfortable for them. But the best advice is to NEVER let any one move in with you unless you are willing to have them stay (for free). The only time it's "safe" is when you are a renter and you can move out at the end of your lease.

during covid no one had to pay rent for like 8 months. It was illegal to evict anyone. So alot of people were stuck in this situation for months and yes, you could be sued for "emotional damage" of having no door, they could go out to eat every day and sue you for how much it cost, you would get the cops called for disturbing the peace. In almost every state you have to have a months notice. Why people who get evicted get sympathy idk they got a free months rent essentially. Then if they pay any % of it they can basically cancel it because usually (depending on the state) the document says a specific amount and if its not that amount owed it gets thrown out. Then if you pay the months rent that was due at the end of the month it also negates it and they have to restart the process. I feel nothing but pity for the landlord that has to evict a tenant.

@@anonymouslyforgotten5592 they could take it to court but a judge would have to be a raging lunatic to rule in their favor
