His phrasing in here is some of the most emotionally potent playing I have heard. Just because he isn't throwing his head back and wincing on bends like Hendrix doesn't mean it is devoid of emotion. Derek has about as much soul as someone can have.
** My 2c ... its terrible, out of time and out of tune and he was missing licks and notes ... I don't see it in this one. ** But he is a great talent though. GOD Bless
The album version is great as well... - but that one (from "One Way Out") is absolutely outworldly! Listened to it easily thousand of times: goosebumps every time starting from 3:17. Poor Warren!))) He was left to play 4-minutes long solo after THAT piece of pure geniosity, which would be kinda hard to match....:)
Agreed: an attack perfectly built; and the slide part is THE best slide guitar solo i ever heard. Maybe Sonny Landreth is more versatile and technically skilled, and overall a bit better slide guitarist than Derek (for now) - but he's too technical most of the times, he's lacking that "the force of nature"-like, raw, let loose energy and pure menace this solo develops towards its end... (Mean no disrespect to Mr. Landreth, of course!:) He's amazing!). Absolutely brilliant!!!
His straight finger play sounds as if he's playing a slide without a slide which is phenomenal. Gives him his own distinct style, bluesy, jazzy, soulful. Doesn't matter what you believe in, he is making waves with a realm greater than our own.
Far beyond technique, this is a great leap into the universe of feeling and emotion. Derek Trucks would have made Duane Allman shed tears of joy. I know where he takes a lot of this from (John Coltrane and Duane Allman) but I still don‘t know as well. Thank God for this player, this music - and music in general.
like I said, I have seen him play live three times.. trust me, it doesn't make any difference. He's amazing live and if you look closely at his face, you see him react to what he plays, hes just in the zone. Hope he stays as unflashy as possible, hes keepin it real.
Absolutely one of the greatest guitarists alive…… Not only is he the best at the Slide; He can really drive any song with his raw knowledge of the fretboard….. Master at his craft.
Look across the board at today's guitarist and it's a rare bird when you find someone who can put the passion and fire into the notes they play. Derek is very rare bird indeed. Putting feeling into music today is groundbreaking.
God damn it! I listened to this song 10 times about a month ago and thought it was great. Now I listened to it again and figured ... eh, it's not going to sound as good this time. But it ROCKS! This is the most climactic guitar solo ever, I can't believe Derek plays it with such a straight face.
Solo's are all about telling a story. A beginning, a middle and an end. Derek is one of the special talents, who does this night after night. Saw him when he was 11, 5 years later opened up for him, and now the past few years the transformation is incredible. Dont compare him to anyone, He's got his OWN THING going on!
Exactly, thanks for speaking the truth. We all know for a fact that if they (Duane and Berry) were still alive today they'd rock the place but it's good to see that Derek and Warren are keeping Allman Bros. rolling in honor.
Ive seen derek trucks live 3 times now, every time he builds the show up to at least one moment where I have chills all over and feel overwhelmed. The only way to do that is by finding those magic note combos that trigger emotion. hes really great at that
I've seen The Allmans live with Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks. Derek is easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and certainly towards the top of the list of contemporary artists. He is mesmerizing to see in person, but I truly wish I had been present for this particular show. The fact that he never uses a pick and has such a wicked command of the fretboard is mind-boggling. Seeing The Allmans is the best bang for your buck when it comes to paying for shows.
Jesse I witnessed a better performance and I never thought I would . It was March 18th 2014 at The Beacon and Desdemona was THEEE Highlight of the Evening . I bought the CD and cannot stop listening to it you have to hear it !
It's amazing how much one can extract from just two chords when they understand how to control the evolution of a phrase. He starts on the 7th, the loneliest note, and transforms the idea into a powerhouse of a line. Such a commanding performance.
the best allman bros band ever, right now. gonna see them 4 times in 2 weeks in aug. and i can't wait. derek is the most talented guitarist alive, hands down.
I love how calm and expressionless Derek is when he is playing the most intense, emotional guitar parts. Michael Landau calls him his favorite guitar player. That's saying something.
Goosebumps every time! I love the way the sounds gradually breaks up into a crescendo of almost pure static and then settles down again... it's like blasting off into space and returning safely to earth
Here i was, thinking he only masters the slide... Totally jazzy, fast, unique style... Full of soul too. You don't need John Mayer expressions to show that you love guitar. This guy is way more honest in my opinion.
besides it would be really hard to not look at the fretboard and make facial expressions when you re playing slide since the intonation must be spot on..
@@felipea.8075 You're right, i was young and full of myself when i wrote this comment. I admit! I was also always a huge fan of John (more than i am a fan of Derek) so i have no idea why i wrote this. Maybe i was just excited to hear something new because i wasn't exposed to any jazzy stuff yet at the time.
...bass man locking down the groove! nothing i have ever heard tops Allman Brothers for sheer exhuberance and DYNAMICS. Derek Trucks is astounding -- he goes anywhere he pleases. long live this vibe... wow.
anyone else notice the My Favorite Things refference at 1:25? solid shit. and it fits right into the solo. one thing i cannot fathom however, is how his tone steadily without jumping slowly gets crunchier and crunchier!!! like wtf is he doing aha
With the right amp and set it just so....harder attack with the pick/fingers gets a more agressive tone. You can also nudge the volume pot on the guitar to drive the tone, (riding the volume pot). It has to do with great amps...great guitars....and great players = tone magic.
This is just Dereks solo from this performance. Anyone who have the link to the complete song from this concert? I think it's over twice as long. Anyway: It's quite sick Derek completely fucks over Dickie Betts who is the composer of this song. Dickie is a great guitarist, and a major a...... Derek is even a better guitarist and a really nice guy.
Played this for my music appreciation class, and was originally only allowed about a minute for each song. Let me play the whole thing, totally mesmerized.
I know it's something you should just take for granted when watching people like this, but it amazes me that he knows where the notes are even when using the slide.
That's exactly what he's doing sir. You get a quality musician like Derek, he'll do that to you. that's the place every musician wants to be whenever they play music, where it comes directly from the heart, and not so much from the mind. True musicianship. and Soul.
I've always loved the Allman Brothers, now I have heard Derek Trucks a few times and am very impressed. This particular solo sends chills down my spine. Great (slide) Guitarist
If you have ever played slide before, you really cant be jumping around and all that jazz, the slightest jostle could cause the slide to not hit the right intonation and sound like crap. Honestly, what he is doing, is INSANELY accurate, his intonation is impeccable, and thats something a regular guitarist never has to think about
Does anyone else hear the reference to "My Favorite Things" from the Sound Of Music in the beginning of his solo? He is BRILLIANT!!! The most melodic slide guitar player I've ever heard....Never get sick of these 2 songs back to back.
im more than your average music fan and im really into guitar even though i dont play, ive seen and listened to a lot of great bands/solos but i can honestly this solo has given me a whole new outlook on guitar, everytime i watch this video my head starts nodding and i get the chills..i dont even understand how trucks is doing what he's doing but the whole sound vibe and feel of this solo is absolutely incredible...my favorite of all time, i could listen to it all day
i havent even heard this yet and i know its awesome fan of derek for years, feel priveleged to have seen these guys way back when ..allen woody mule era.. such great times. will always be on the trucks train. love from colorado brother!
You all might listen to this once, twice, or maybe three times at a time... but this solo haunts me. I've been coming back to this for months now. It's got a depth that most musicians can't even fathom.
The most expressive guitarist i know was Jerry Garcia. He smiled and when he did there wasnt a frown in the crowd if you were there. Trey Anastasio brings the heat. When hes playing a solo or the song is worth dancing to he dances. When he is in the zone you see a look of the utmost compassion for the music. Derek Trucks might not be a expressive guitarist but his guitar does the talking and every time i see him i am overwhelmed by bliss and its so important to either show emotions or play it
a very interesting playing... at moments it feels very jazzy, then you realize is not only jazz but blues, and then he starts with the slide and it turns into a wild solo.
One of Derek Trucks' many outstanding qualities as a guitarist is his very distinctive tone. I can heard two bars of him playing and recognize that tone right off. Sweet!
12 years later and this is still the best shit ever
yep
Literally my favorite guitar solo I have ever heard ... And I've heard a bunch of them.
it was back in early 2007 when I heard this for the first time. I still have it in my head wherever I Walk :)
I was about to write the same 16 years later!
Can't disagree. Have you heard this version of midnight in Harlem? This is my #1 solo
His phrasing in here is some of the most emotionally potent playing I have heard. Just because he isn't throwing his head back and wincing on bends like Hendrix doesn't mean it is devoid of emotion. Derek has about as much soul as someone can have.

So badass at 2:09 when he keeps playing with his right hand while he gets out the slide

Still the best solo of our generation, nothing else comes close to this master piece (opinion)
Absolutely one of the greatest guitarists alive…… Not only is he the best at the Slide; He can really drive any song with his raw knowledge of the fretboard….. Master at his craft.
Two Coltrane quotes in one solo: 1:25 My Favorite Things / 3:07 A Love Supreme

I first heard this 8 years ago when I was 15, and its still my favorite solo.
Reminder to hear it again , it's been 7 more years.
Hearing this for the first time was one of the most inspiring moments of my life.
I’ve watched this solo over 250 times.. my all time favorite solo of all time
This solo is so well constructed it's insane.....it's a song within a song....unreal

jesus this solo... is just perfect
This is one of the best solos i've ever heard and the reason why Derek rocks, i'm tabbing this one out
no blues wanking just great phrasing and great use of dynamics and harmony
I love you Derek. you inspire so much, those sounds you pick, mystical! such a spirit!!
This is my first time actually hearing him play after reading about him for years in guitar mags. What a player, love his style.

Now that is some stellar examination of 2 chords!
It's amazing how much one can extract from just two chords when they understand how to control the evolution of a phrase. He starts on the 7th, the loneliest note, and transforms the idea into a powerhouse of a line. Such a commanding performance.
You can really hear the Indian influences on this when he brings out the slide
Derek Trucks is undoubtedly one of the best playing now. Surreal tone, and definately surreal playing.
Amazing, simply amazing. I love his style. And that tone is so fucking good. The fuzz on the slide is great.
Truly one of the most fantastic musicians I have ever seen. I love Derek Trucks.
He is "The best guitarist in the world of all time !!"
tin,thoi,sư
the best allman bros band ever, right now. gonna see them 4 times in 2 weeks in aug. and i can't wait. derek is the most talented guitarist alive, hands down.
I hear a Coltrane influence in Derek's playing! The phrase that starts around 1:24 sounds like "My favorite things!"
That, my friends, is how you construct an exemplary solo. The perfect blend of technique and emotion that takes you on a journey.
I love how calm and expressionless Derek is when he is playing the most intense, emotional guitar parts. Michael Landau calls him his favorite guitar player. That's saying something.
If U want calm and expressionless combined with guitar... Check out Richard Thompson "Cant't win" . The last 5 mins there is way over...

besides it would be really hard to not look at the fretboard and make facial expressions when you re playing slide since the intonation must be spot on..

There’s no meaning in comparing 2 awesome guitar players by their expressions. It’s just stupid

It's amazing that something so sophisticated can just pour out of his fingers so naturally.
Normal Gibson SG = 22 frets
Gibson SG in Derek's hands = infinite frets
Using his fingers which makes his sound so unique he is a freak of nature !
zakwan Yunus exactly. He clearly makes an advantage of his slide when it comes to pitch range
...Derek Trucks is a total inspiration. i return to this solo anytime i need a lift. Sublime musicianship!

3:07 is a tribute to A Love Supreme.. :)
imo that part throws me off and sounds bad
Speechless. Every time I watch something like this.
I didn't know Derek could play jazz. I thought he only played that smokin' slide.
I'm convinced that this along with Prince's While My Guitar Gently Weeps are the two best live recordings of emotional solos
okay that applause was WAYYY too casual......
