Here are my favourite books of 2021! These not necessarily all books that were published in 2021, but are just the best books I read this year! I read a lot of wonderful books in 2021, so it was difficult to pare these down to 10 (*cough* I may get away but shoving a few series in here hahaha)
Hope you enjoy the video, HAPPY HOLIDAYS and take care 💛

This is my first time watching your videos and I love that you said Pachinko is one of your favourite books of all time and made you cry - this was exactly my opinion of Pachinko! I will look forward to reading song of Achilles now... I've heard so much hype about this that it's made me wary of picking it up. Great video, thanks for the recommendations!

It's very accessible for a beginner, I'm not familiar with Greek Mythology either. The back of the book is also a very helpful resource for further back story on characters etc, I referenced it while reading. I found Circe a lot stronger of a book than Song of Achilles though so would almost suggest beginning with Circe instead.

I also read House in the Cerulean Sea this year. It was beautiful, and sad, and funny - Lucy and Talia in particular cracked me up, especially when they visited the hardware/garden store and the record shop.
Pachinko (on your recommendation) is waiting for me at the library. Because of medical nonsense, and public holidays, I won't be able to get to the library until day 13 (they hold them for 14 days) so I hope I get there and I don't have to go back on the wait list!
When you got to book #4 and said technically it's 3 books because it's a series, I thought you were going to say LOTR.
I'm looking over the books I've read (Goodreads challenge) this year and some of them seem like last year or the year before, for some reason. I've read 45 books this year and it's hard to pick a favourite. If I'm going with favourite *new reads, then probably About Grace by Anthony Doerr. If I'm going with favourite *re-reads, probably The Waves by Virginia Woolf.

My favorite "book" this year was His Dark Materials. Amazing! However, the House in the Cerulean Sea was one of my most overhyped disappointments, sadly.

A book I absolutely loved this year was "An I-Novel" by Minae Mizumura. ☺ It was originally written in Japanese, and it's the author's semi-autobiographical account of her life as a Japanese expatriate and graduate student in the US. It examines the main character's relationship with writing and the Japanese language, and shows her making the decision to write her first book. Since we don't have the concept of I-novels in English publishing, it was a really interesting read.

My favorite book that I read this year was easily Star Mother by Charlie N. Holmberg. It's one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read, the world-building is phenomenal, and it's full of so much heart and love. The ending made me sob, so given what you said in this video, you might enjoy it as well ;)

I started reading 'The house in the cerulean sea' because you recommended it so many times. I quite liked it at the beginning, I wasn't like blown away by it or found it extraordinarily good, but I really enjoyed it. But after I found out about this whole thing with the Canadian residential schools I couldn't continue reading it. We discussed the topic of residential schools at school and for me it's impossible to understand how this cute story could be inspired by such an inhumane, terrible, traumatic tragedy. I think the way in which this trauma was turned into a book is just soo inappropriate and I can't continue reading it. I don't want to offend anybody, but I just can't overlook the background of the book.

This gets mentioned every time I speak about The House in the Cerulean Sea, and I think it's a really important discussion point about allegory and what authors can and can't be inspired by. I actually gave my thoughts in a previous video--the moment is at 10:12 if you'd like to watch it 😊💛 ua-cam.com/video/mjoVe4CJpPA/v-deo.html

@@christy-anne-jones Yes, I already watched that video and I think that you made some good points☺️ However, I think that what you said about the book being an allegory and that children can learn about the Sixties Scoop through the book, I don't agree on. Because although the children in the book also get taken away from their families, The House in the Cerulean Sea is like a very romanticized version of a residential school and kinda implies that as long as the kids are treated with love, they are happy with their lives there... I can't really explain it that good, but I don't think that children would learn anything about how the conditions in the residential schools really were (violence, rape, ...). We learnt about this at school (while I was reading the book) and many of us were close to tears by the things the historian we talked to told us about the experiences his indigenous interviewpartners had made. I don't want to offend you of course and I can imagine that it's a bit "hard" to like have a favourite book that has such a
problematic side, because you love it so much for other reasons and you always have to kind of justify that against people with my opinion😅❤️ But I just wanted to mention it for people who haven't seen that previous video and might want to know about this.😊

I recently found your channel looking for some reading recommendations (I havent read much for a few years following some eye surgery that has made reading a bit uncomfortable, but I'm really wanting to get back into it this year). Here is my problem - be it a blessing or a curse - I find I am eable to enjoy ANY book - even a "bad" one - if someone else enjoyed it and is able to explain why. So unfortunately now my list of books to read this year is soooooooooooooooo long there is zero chance I'll be able to read all of them. Thankfully I have already read 2 on this list - Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and the Dark Materials series. Dark materials I read as a YA, I have re-read the first one many times, but I cried so much at the last one that I've never re-read it (I actually cried AGAIN just now when you spoke about it!). I swear reading that trilogy changed my life, and it remains one of my favourite reads of all time - I would like to add my recommendation for it (but be prepared to sob).
Thank you so much for all the recommendations - they will certainly keep me busy! So glad I found your channel. K
