Gad, what memories this revives! I was 92 at the time, having just been demobbed when the Great War came to an end, and I can remember listening to this marvellous programme with my grandfather in our living room etc etc etc etc etc........

I'm 40 and found spikes war memoirs by chance at 12 and can't help but see all three as the start of a British comedy just a few episodes of the Goons and it raises my mood every time

I am 79 and I remember the joy we all had at listening to these INSANE programs, but oh what FUN.
This Earth is so much sadder and poorer for the passing of these wonderful looney characters.

Dear God! Sixtythree years ago. Memories of my Dad and I listening to the Goons on a Saturday afternoon on our living room radio in the 1950s in Jamaica. Brings back childhood memories. Unforgettable nutty humour ..."...:look out in the desert, what can you see? .. "Nothing"...... "Here, use these binoculars.... What do you see now?"..... "Nothing....but I can see it more clearly!".....
I found this series in the 1980s. I really enjoyed the old radio shows as a kid. I remember how much this show would make me laugh. I was in tears once when they were describing an impossible to imagine scene.
I remember ALL of the episodes which I and every friend I had listened to RELIGIOUSLY.

I was a very young RN Aviation Cadet doing sea time in 1955, observing bridge duties during last dog-watch on a Tuesday somewhere in the Celtic Sea en route to Gibraltar. The Captain emerged from his sea cabin. "Sparks - can we get the Home Service this far out?" "Possible sir". "Right, get the Goon Show piped up to the bridge". Seventeen years later I had the amazingly good fortune to get two of the rare public tickets for the Last Goon Show recording at the Camden Theatre. Magic memories....

Bob Dennell yes: I used to go and watch the show being recorded at Mornington Crescent: one would write off to BBC ticket unit - enclosing SAE, of course, and about six months later one’s crumpled badly written envelope would find its way home again with blessings enclosed. Great Fun had by one and all.
You were dead lucky with your seagoing experience by the way: I was CCF Naval section and the best I got was a one way trip from Portsmouth to Edinburgh on HMS Gambia plus a return train ticket home

Let me make sure we are talking about the same thing, the Combined Cadet Force, I was in the CCF when I was at King Edwards Grammar School in Stourbridge Worcestershire in the 1950s.

Peter & Harry could do all the characters even Eccles. Sheer craziness and my god I laughed at this as a kid.. There is no way this will ever be repeated .
The late Beatle, John Lennon, was a regular listener of the Goon Show until 1956 -- when 'music took him', as he phrased it. So I expect he listened to this 1955 broadcast of Rommel's Treasure in his aunt's sitting room!
I was born in 1979. When i was a kid I used to listen to my father's tapes he recorded from the radio in the 60s NZ. I absolutely loved The Goons, still do! It's great to see people younger than me listen to The Goons! Keep listening kids! Pass them on to your kids! Keep The Goons alive!
If you still have those tapes, they may be worth some money. Many of the original shows have been lost. Even if the tapes are in poor condition, they can be digitally restored.

Same I was born in 1979 and my dad had the goon show script book. And we'd sit at the weekends doing the voices and listen to them when I was really young. I loved the weekends ❤

I'm 40 this year and I am so grateful to have been brought up on the Goons, mainly by my Uncle. I'm looking forward to my own son appreciating it too. He's seven and already has a sense of humour just like my own. 😂
My grandfather, who is Australian, actually went to England once and was already a big fan of the Goon Show. While in England, he was at a little restaurant or café kind of place when he actually got a pass to see the Goon Show being performed. He actually got to see Sellers and some other famous British actors while there!
I had the benefit of being raised in Canada by a Liverpudlian Grandfather then moving to Australia. Let's not get started on how funny New Zealand is!
moviepeasant ....I’m from Australia, and grew up listening to this during the sixties! My Uncle was and still is a huge Goons fan, and to this day still uses goons quotes throughout his conversation. This type of comedy really appeals to the Australian sense of humour !

Somewhere in the 60's I organised a trip for my group for my group to cross the Pennines and attend a live recording of the Goon Show.It was in a scrubby old theater but that meant nothing.The show was a riot of fun,ad-lib and utter chaos on stage.It was the maddest thing I've ever seen or heard and I've never ever forgotten it.It is a memory that can never be replaced.What a brilliant mad-house it was and to me,still is.
What a wonderful memory to have... I'm jealous!! And thanks so much for watching and commenting. The Goons were 'lightning in a bottle' and all those who grew up with them know that... nothing like that has ever happened since....

We tuned in the the goon show on the radio BBC in Auckland nz. Had the family crying with laughter in no time. 1960s
I’m 79 yrs old and used to listen to the Goons as well as other programmes,such as Top of the Form,Dick Barton Special Agent and a few
others - I sat next to my dear father,Percy,George,Albert King,who was in the London Fire Brigade during the Blitz.
He was also in the Merchant Navy as a Steward and before that he was a Bellboy at the Savoy Hotel. He died,aged 81 yrs old
in 1996.💖💖💖💖💖💖 My Mother & Father had 6 children,including twins a boy and girl,I am the eldest.
Wonderful memories, I was born in 1942 so I remember those incomparable programs they saved us from the full realization of the horrors that we had survived.
The BBC had an inexhaustible supply of unbelievably talented people where else on Earth could we have heard this genius.

These were repeated on Saturday lunchtimes when I was a kid in the 70s / 80s. My dad also bought a number of the LPs. Magical stuff; it saddens me how few people seem to be familiar with them these days.
I think they're a bit too middle class and old fashioned for younger generations. You might as well try and bring back music hall. And wacky doesn't always equal funny - that overused falsetto voice is just irritating. Much of this is a ho-hum 1950s public school humour that younger people can't relate to : /

I was manufactured in a shed in Sheffield about 20 minutes to 12. I was forced to listen to this then, and I'm still hearing it now! My psychiatrist says spike Milligan is not in my head, which is good because he was mad! Poor spike, his psychiatrist was mad too, so would you be if you were hearing voices, but then that's the beauty of radio, it helps disguise madness. Thanks for the sanity spike.

I was held prisoner in Malin Bridge ( a small bungalow on the left at the start of Loxley Road to be exact) from age 10 to 18 when I escaped. I trekked the long trek to High Storrs Grammar each day for five years, absorbed next to nothing but the handful of "O" levels I stole gave me the ticket to join the Fleet Air Arm. 'ITMA' and 'Educating Archie' gave way to 'The Goons' and I have never recovered.

Just turned 60 I used to hide the Radio under my Pillow at Boarding School in the Dormitory during the afternoon it was the one thing that cheered me up being away from my family for so long even now Eccles cracks me up god rest their souls

This is real comedy lol so funny I remember sitting listening to this every week on the radio. I grew up with it now I know where I get my sense of humour lol

I'm glad the musical interludes have been removed. I remember as a kid in the early 90s, fast forwarding these parts on my old cassette deck, to get back to the story.
I understand why they needed some filler though, Spike said the pressure to continually come up with material every week, contributed to his numerous nervous breakdowns.
My Dad heard this live when first aired, and he listened to many hours of recordings with me when i was a boy. Many uproarious guffaws were had by all. There are still lines, scenes, catchphrases and silly voices that my brother and I share to this day, even though my father is long gone. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Further, my Venturer Unit had Harry Secombe as honorary member. We asked if he would swear our oath, and his reply contained a polite refusal on the grounds that he '' .. knew a few oaths ...'' of his own.
First time listening to the Goons. That was excellent. Genius. Such fun. Brilliant. Really enjoyed it. Will definitely be hunting for more.
As a child of the Fifties, I remember every Goon Show !! My favourite was The Great Christmas Pudding
I'm a child of the seventies and stumbled upon the Goon Show on Australia's ABC Radio which played it every Saturday at midday. My favourite was (and still is) "The Lost Gold Mine" where every character got a portion of an ever-diminishing treasure map. Now there is Goon Show Radio on Tunein! I can listen all day every day!
I taped the mid-day Goons on the ABC every Saturday, Still listen when I can.

Oh my gosh....52 years later, I only now discover the inspiration for The Firesign Theater. Radio had a unique in-your-head magic that television (and everything following) could never match.

I didn’t start listening to the goons till I moved to Missouri for a short nine month job stint and local radio station out in the middle of nowhere they started playing the goon shows on weekends Saturday I believe I was so impressed I got back to My Home in Los Angeles area eventually I got a CD with every one of their shows and eventually upgraded it to a flash disc
At the same time I was working for my boss who was in World War II that was stationed over there and he used to listen to the goon shows over there in England
I've been digging my small collection of CDs of The Goon Show, recently. They don't make comedy like this anymore!

Peter Sellers. I got here from a Monty Python Flying Circus reunion of sorts of John and Eric. They said that they were influenced by The Goon Show. High praise that.

Chapman, Jones and Palin also cite the Goons as a major influence on them. Milligan’s Q5 pre-empted Python with its sketches not having endings, breaking the fourth wall etc.

Fabulous. And it's difficult to convey just how far beyond the norm of '50s UK comedy this outfit was, although regular listening to BBC Radio 4 Extra will pretty soon convey this. Only Kenneth Horn and Hancock came anywhere near the Goons inspiration, so far as I'm concerned. Thanks for YouTubing them.

Absolutely Brilliant! I first heard of the Goon Show when I was a kid and my mother read about them influencing Monty Python--a local (New York) radio station broadcast their shows weekly and I was blown away by the randomness of the dialog, the "absurdity" (or absolute genius) of the "have a gorilla" tag phrase, and the silliness of the stories. Back then (1970s) without Google, we did our own research on phrases that were unknown or unfamiliar to us--like in "Napoleon's Piano" when Neddie signs his name and says "Neddie Seagoon, A.G.G." to which Hercules asks "what's 'A GG' for?" and Neddie retorts "for the guineas to ride on." (a "GG" is a colloquial term for "horse"). Holy crap, these Goons were way ahead of their time, freakin' AWESOME!!!

I was in an army hospital in Chester in 1955 for 6 weeks and afraid of bursting the stitches in my stomach laughing so much!! Wonderful comedy . . .

I first heard the Goon Show when I was in High School. A New York City Jazz radio station was running recordings of the Goons. It began a lifelong love affair. Spike Milligan was a genius for his influence on the Pythons . He should be a British National Treasure along with Agatha Christie, William Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers.
Eric Sykes wrote a lot of their scripts later he was famous in the UK in his own right as a comedian and writer His shows are on you tube

I used to go to bed early so I could listen to the Goon Show in bed. I was 16 when this one was aired.
Memories, though was born in 1963, and when I became aware of listening to The Goons when I stayed at my grandmothers place, can't remember at what age though. She would turn on the old radio always on BBC and my brother and I used to listen to them, was always at night time. So entertaining and loved the wit and their talent, shall never forget. Admittedly though I had know idea that they had a lot of series, as my time listening to them wasn't a lot, as we only stayed about once or twice at her place, within a week for a short period of time, till got a bit older...
I have most of the goon shows on cd , possibly , I'm sat on traffic jams laughing like an idiot , a natural affliction, the goons and spine milligna have been my hero's since the mid 60s .

Yes, people were really scared of the Germans in 1955, weren't they.
No they were not, don't conflate memories of the war with being scared of it with the Germans again. Germany was palpably not a threat in the 1950s.
Spike Milligan was struck with CSR in the desert (him and Secombe served together), he never fully recovered, bless him. That's why this story is funny and resonant.

love these old radio comedies. the british did so well with it. memories while growing up and listening to it on the radio and now listening again as a 47 year old, i laugh at the comedy and tear up as i rememeber growing up.
Since my childhood in New Zealand the Goons have been part of my life. Reading the scripts is a good as hearing them.
The mid 60s was a great time for British radio comedy on NZ National Programme.
@@neville132bbk I agree, it was great and we had a Sunday morning comedy show as well. Wayne and Schuster (Rinse the Blood off my Toga, The Shakespearean Baseball Game) and lots more. In Australia until the late 80’s the Goon Show was on the ABC on Saturday at noon. At least we can see them all on UA-cam now,

As my father once told me there is a Goon Show playing somewhere 24/7. A weekly ritual with us - three o'clock on a Sunday afternoon. It explains a lot.

Nearly seventy now and still laughing like a loon at the goons. I had all of the records from the Record of the Month Club.
I start laughing in the first few seconds. It doesn’t matter whether it’s funny or not & never stop smiling, the whole time.
On the list of most influential comedic teams ever, one won't call long until getting to this crew. Pretty much every great British Comedian from the 1960 on (Dud and Peter, all of the Pythons to a man to start) give credit these guys as an inspiration.

The Last Goon Show of All was recorded for TV.
Some of the episodes were redone for TV. Search for "the telegoons". But to be frank, these are best as radio shows.

Dad had many records of The Goon Show on old, heavy vinyl. Mum threw them all out when he died. What a waste.
Now that is tragic... :-( Sorry about your Dad, but.... what a horrible waste of classic old records too!
He passed a long time ago (1986 aged 48) but thanks, all the same. Mum also disposed of a classic childhood toy of Dad's father I was hoping to keep but that's, sometimes, the way things go.

The Goons may not have been squeaky-clean, but I appreciate their emphasis on surreal absurdity, wordplay, and the like. It's my favorite type of humor.
It is said that all sorts of army slang was put into the original scripts, and the BBC people, who had all been officers in the War, duly nodded them through, until it was discovered what they meant, and they were duly removed from the second broadcast.

All fans remember three Goons. Most remember Michael Bentine and Wallace Greenslade too, but I remember Ray Ellington the voice of Throat. You did not hear him often, but he was always a punch line worth listening too. Seagoon after knocking on a door "Mother!" Throat "Pardon me Sir I am not your mother I m the butler".Seagoon "You shouldn't wear your kilt so long" Throat "I have reason for that".

People often say they should be remade, why ???, we have nearly all of the shows still, no one could make as good a job as the originals & many things about the program are so 'un PC' 60 years later that it would never happen..... note - the pictures were much better on radio than TVi
