    Glad you commented on why you grind hay. I wasn't sure if for those reasons or if you do something different like mix it with something else so it had to be ground. turns out, no. it is just so they eat more of the marginal stuff and eat all of the plant. makes sense. less waste. 👍

    I'm curious about the hay grinding. I grew up on a farm north of Edmonton in the '60s and we had a Gehl hammer mill which was progress back then. Ran off the PTO from a Case 830 and the mill did a great job but the scale was small by today's standards small square bales fed down the as broken up piecemeal chunks. So we obviously pulled the Tennessee off the bales first. So my question is what happens to the twine on those big square bales and, if it is just ground into the feed, do you use sisal or plastic? How do the animals' digestive systems deal with that? Or is there now some different materials used for twine, like perhaps hemp? Are there new materials for twine that the animals' digestive systems can handle? Just curious about this. A follower from Edmonton.

      @jackbannock3458 Місяць тому

      Id say 50% gets wrapped into the grinder and the other half is ground up into the feed. I've seen a few cows have to get cut open and netwrap balls pulled out of their gut.

    • @AuntNikisFarm
      @AuntNikisFarm Місяць тому +1

      @@ianlund1086that actually isn’t true. While there is a small amount of twine and wrap that gets hooked on the outside of the tub and the conveyor, the majority of it gets ground into the hay and fed to the cattle.

    • @AuntNikisFarm
      @AuntNikisFarm Місяць тому

      The reason for not taking the twine off, is because if they were to cut it, the bale would fall apart and would never make it into the grinder.
      A lot of guys will cut the netwrap off of round bales, and while some falls off, the tractor can scoop it and add it to the grinder tub at the end.
      Straw acts the same as the big square bales and falls apart as well, so most guys will leave those together as well.

      Why would he want or have time to mess with cattle, when he has a 13000 acre grain farm. Tony and Tim are hard working guys. I'm not trying to be jerk but having cattle also is quit a commitment. He'd need fences,access to water and they should be checked everyday , then there's feeding them every day in the winter and calving. And wow if you ever want to go somewhere, you got to line someone up to take your place .
