Fly Fishing - Practical approach to the Washing Line method.

- There are a few techniques in fly fishing that have been real game changers in regards to catching fish. The single blob, the bung and of course the washing line! This method offers the angler a multitude of options as regards to targeting Trout. You can fish your flies on a level plane at a consistent depth or as you will see in the video change the way the flies move by clever use of weighted flies.
This is obviously only a ten minute video on a subject I could talk about for hours! If you have any follow up questions please leave them in the comments section and I will do my best to answer them.

Thank you for a very good blend of theory & practical. Without a 'hands on' visual of real life experience the observing mind gets easily muddled and wanders off. From recently being successful with euro nymphing and now to the booby, my 50+ years of fly fishing has been re-energised with these outstandingly effective methods.

Superb advice Lindsay….I usually fish only three flies on the washing line and never fish a blob or booby unless they’re on the point. Great options to find where fish are feeding 🤙🎣

This is the best presentation of washing line techniques to face different configurations I have seen; during reservoir competition I used a washing line technique with only a shipman at the end and a suspended buzzer in the middle; in this case you have to manage the shipman to stay floating and vertical, select the nylon to stay on the surface (may be add some grease), and the buzzer weight. What you propose is a wider approach to adapt to the position of the trout within the water column. Thanks for that.

As usual an important and relevant perspective of the many rule of “P” Firstly. Presentation. If you are not presenting the flies in the right way relevant for the conditions. Then you are not going to be effective. Then the next two are. Perception and presence of mind. If conditions change, temperature wind direction brightness ect or the fish have either not shown interest or are reacting differently. Then we as anglers must have to wear both that perception of that change, and the presence of mind to work out the probabilities of what is needed to solve the issue. Yes a slow or medium intermediate or floating line with a intermediate sink tip would have been your personal and a correct choice if fishing for yourself or as part of a team. As usual you kept to the issues that most small stillwater anglers or beginners would be facing in respect to likely tackle available to them.

If you are fishing a booby on point with marabou in the tail and wing , use the uni knot or non slip knot to attach it. I always thought there was enough movement in the marabou to just use a tucked half blood or similar because it is fast and easy but the uni.non slip knot gives it a hell of a lot more movement and will definitely improve your catch rate especially with flies with a mylar or similar body. There are loads of excellent instructional vids here on YT to show how to tie it .

Was flying fishing once considered to be like hunting with catch and kill fishing
Many anglers catch and kill fish for the table which is fair enough. I am not a fan of eating trout hence I no longer kill them where I can avoid it. There are only so many friends and neighbours you can give them to. The bottom line is here in the UK catch and kill fisheries are a reality.

They start around 10" but get shorter as I change flies throughout the day.
Hi Lindsay loving the vids, really helping as I’m looking to do more reservoir fishing as well as fishing for brownies on the river. One thing I don’t understand though. You mention by the end of your retrieve you are fishing 3-4ft down. As you have got two suspended flies on, surely every time you pull the fly line the middle nymph must rise up to near the surface? And I would have thought the same with just a point fly suspended and a floating line, the nymph sinking only when there is a pause in the retrieve?
You make a good point but you have to remember that the flies are sinking all the time. It’s only when you put in a long pull that this will bring them up in the water column. Even the depending on the flies and tippet they will rarely get near the surface even with a floating line.

Hi Lindsay! What type of rod (length, weight, action) would you recommend for fishing a washing line from a boat?
I use a 10' for #7 but you could go up or down a line weight.

Hi Lindsay, what floating fly line were you using here?
I only use two floaters I think this might be the Airflo one, it’s a light olive colour which I prefer off the bank.
Is the leader straight fluorocarbon or a tapered poly leader with fluorocarbon tippet? Thanks.

@@lindsayiflyfish if its straight not tapered how do you manage to cast such a long length. I saw a video you did with Rhys, and mentioned the need for wind to aid turn-over. What is the exact set up eg leader to tippet?
