      @divinegon4671 Рік тому

      @@camorinbatchelder6514 don’t Straussians believe in deceiving laypeople? They have one world view, that they perceive to be correct and that they pursuit, yet, simultaneously, influence laypeople to believe a false worldview… so as to deceive and gain a one up. Did I get that right?

    • @camorinbatchelder6514
      @camorinbatchelder6514 Рік тому +2

      @@divinegon4671 yes, Strauss distinguished between the "estoteric" (elitism) and the "exoteric" (plebs). He basically espoused a secular political theology for the elites and a religous thralldom for the laypeople.
      Strauss and his followers can indeed be very deceptive, reflected by their excessive universalism and rationalism in politics, which is destructive towards laypeople. Notwithstanding, Strauss is unique; a Platonist and a Nietzschian in the same breath. Maybe balance him out with Isaiah Berlin or Roger Scruton?

    Dr. Sugrue, suggestion delivered with great love and respect: In your youth, your lectures were delivered with a frenetic walking pace. Your current lectures are delivered while you are seated. Unless you are constrained by health restrictions, have you thought about a medium between those two deliveries, like a simple meandering walk in the park? I'd love to see some of your lectures delivered in that fashion. Cheers and thank you.

    I just read the article about Tom Rollins and the teaching company where it mentions you coming in clutch with a brilliant, off-the-cuff Machiavelli lecture when the scheduled guy got too nervous. I would love to hear your thoughts about what you think the wild success of your lectures (and the teaching company/great courses/ other youtube lecturers) says about modern Universities and where education should go given how the internet has increased the communication bandwidth so broadly.
    Also: The article mentions some antics of Rick Roderick's. One quote in particular when Tom Rollins apparently told Roderick he'd have to cut some political remarks about Nancy Reagan was Rick saying “Tom, truth is a defense to libel.” I'd love to hear your thoughts on Professor Roderick or experiences with him, if you had any?
    Thanks for all you do and sorry for the lengthy email-comment. Heres the article for anyone interested in some background mentioning Dr. Sugrue and the Teaching Company he brilliantly helped succeed in the pre-internet era of recorded, high-level public education. www.city-journal.org/html/great-courses-great-profits-13393.html

    I read some of the classics occasionally. I’m not educated to-any high standard, I haven’t been to university. What I find is although they can be long, hard work and challenging, it’s AFTER you’ve read the work that has the most impact. It is only then that it sinks in just how important or good it was. I find my self thinking about it or doing some light research into connected works etc. I don’t do that with mainstream fiction, which I love. However, some of the classics can actually change you.
