Absolute treasure. Thanks to his daughter for preserving his digital legacy for future generations.
Requiescat in pace, Michael Sugrue!
Thanks! I have learned so much from you since 2005- on Great Courses tapes, CD, DVD, and now on You Tube! You unravel so much more than philosophy: history, culture, psychology, theology, spirituality , etc all blended into a magnificent genre. Salamat po.

Thank you for your work Michael! The Zoomers appreciate you!

Zoomer is such a stupid word. It is a word invented by corporate media for stupid purposes.
Nah even genz also appreciate his work
This man has changed my perspective in ways I can’t quite explain in a coherent fashion. All I can say is that it’s such a blessing that we can listen to this man’s dissertations online about some of the most important literary topics of humanity. Thank you for this content
Thanks to Micheal and his daughter for all the content!
I was hooked when I saw your lecture on marcus aurelius, I'm a big fan, you made philosophy so much easier for me. Thank you professor
Sugrue is quite influenced by the Straussian, Alan Bloom. If you want more content along those lines, try Leo Strauss' "The Rebirth of Classical Political Rationalism". Then go from there!
@@camorinbatchelder6514 don’t Straussians believe in deceiving laypeople? They have one world view, that they perceive to be correct and that they pursuit, yet, simultaneously, influence laypeople to believe a false worldview… so as to deceive and gain a one up. Did I get that right?
@@divinegon4671 yes, Strauss distinguished between the "estoteric" (elitism) and the "exoteric" (plebs). He basically espoused a secular political theology for the elites and a religous thralldom for the laypeople.
Strauss and his followers can indeed be very deceptive, reflected by their excessive universalism and rationalism in politics, which is destructive towards laypeople. Notwithstanding, Strauss is unique; a Platonist and a Nietzschian in the same breath. Maybe balance him out with Isaiah Berlin or Roger Scruton?
@@camorinbatchelder6514 wonderful. Thank you
Thanks!
Professor Sugrue ! We appreciate you very much, good sir ! 😊🙏
It’s not just the material but the presentation… your ability to simply and seamlessly discuss such a variety of deep topics really shows your storytelling capability.
You have a great talent, not just of recall but of engaging your students.
Thank you so much, I hope you know we all love and appreciate you Doc!
Saw your lectures on Marcus Aurelius and Arthur Schopenhauer and loved them but totally delighted to see more yet being done! Thank you Professor Sugrue for sharing!
Michael, I've only recently come across your content and lectures. I have not studied philosophy nor politics at university for many years now and you have reignited that love of knowledge that used to burn bright. So thank you Michael and all the best.
Brendan
A huuuge THANK YOU from a 30 y old Croatian who you’ve helped enormously in not regretting he ended up studying something else rather than philosophy by at least getting sparks of it on the internets- I’m certain you can’t imagine how much it means to a massive amount of us - THANK YOU, SIR!
Your magic as a lecturer never left! Completely entranced as always
you're the best. weaving in Strauss? Brilliant!
Dr. Sugrue, suggestion delivered with great love and respect: In your youth, your lectures were delivered with a frenetic walking pace. Your current lectures are delivered while you are seated. Unless you are constrained by health restrictions, have you thought about a medium between those two deliveries, like a simple meandering walk in the park? I'd love to see some of your lectures delivered in that fashion. Cheers and thank you.
People like you are such a few on this planet. Please let have more of you before the doomsday reaches us. Thank you so much
Thanks again for the wisdom
I just read the article about Tom Rollins and the teaching company where it mentions you coming in clutch with a brilliant, off-the-cuff Machiavelli lecture when the scheduled guy got too nervous. I would love to hear your thoughts about what you think the wild success of your lectures (and the teaching company/great courses/ other youtube lecturers) says about modern Universities and where education should go given how the internet has increased the communication bandwidth so broadly.
Also: The article mentions some antics of Rick Roderick's. One quote in particular when Tom Rollins apparently told Roderick he'd have to cut some political remarks about Nancy Reagan was Rick saying “Tom, truth is a defense to libel.” I'd love to hear your thoughts on Professor Roderick or experiences with him, if you had any?
Thanks for all you do and sorry for the lengthy email-comment. Heres the article for anyone interested in some background mentioning Dr. Sugrue and the Teaching Company he brilliantly helped succeed in the pre-internet era of recorded, high-level public education. www.city-journal.org/html/great-courses-great-profits-13393.html
I read some of the classics occasionally. I’m not educated to-any high standard, I haven’t been to university. What I find is although they can be long, hard work and challenging, it’s AFTER you’ve read the work that has the most impact. It is only then that it sinks in just how important or good it was. I find my self thinking about it or doing some light research into connected works etc. I don’t do that with mainstream fiction, which I love. However, some of the classics can actually change you.
Michael just want to thank you for continuing to create and share amazing educational content. I’m almost 30 and have been a fan since my college days, your lectures are timeless!
"Philosophy is the preparation for death. Why would one be afraid of the moment he has been preparing for?"
Thank you, again. You bring so much enrichment to us, in such an astoundingly venerable manner. Love it.
Love this. Thank you, Mr. Sugrue.
More videos like this please Michael!
Loved your original lecture and love the reboot 👏
Very glad to see you are still at it.
Thank you for your work Dr. Sugrue 🙏
Always good to see the professor pop up on my feed.
Always a pleasure to listen to your lectures, thank you for your work!
Glad to see you making new content! I've watched pretty much all your old lectures on here and have loved every minute. Huge thank you for all your work
You’re a gen sit! I salute you and have been a fan for years, glad to see your new material.
Thank you, sir. Thank you for everything.
So thankful to have discovered this channel. This is high quality education from a brilliant man.
You're the man.
The truthsayers (like Machiavelli) may not be blessed, but they will be admired for calling it like they see it. Great lecture!
You are a rhetorical powerhouse if I've ever seen one! Brilliant!
This feels like one long set up for a killer punch line. Michael, you are the absolute best
Thank you for this ❤
Just discovered this channel. Educational resources like this are so important! Thank you
Love it, Dr Saheb!
The myth, the man, the legend! Truly a master lecturer!
"maybe human condition should sometimes be such that there's no way to avoid evil....that's one of the reasons I'm not a politician" brilliant
Thank You!
Michael your a legend man thanks for the very informative material.
Looking forward to all these additional talks that I see popping up on my feed; what a feast!
Feel crazy lucky to easily have access to information like this, thank you so much!
Thank you,
Thank you Michael! Just found your meditations lecture from a couple decades ago. Will be watching you every week
I love your channel! Cheers from Chile :)
Im enjoying this while sipping my coffee thank you sir!
Thank you, I saw your previous lecture on Niccolò. Haven't seen a better lecture on the subject.
I just finished listening to your lecture on Machiavelli not two hours ago! This is great
Looking good, professor
I’m now hearing of you and I’m becoming a big time fan. Learning a shit ton and enjoying the video
I love these lectures 💙
Thank you for sharing your profound knowledge of history professor.
Great. Excellent. Splendid.
One of my favorite components of Dr Sugrue’s lectures is the emphasis on historical context and exactly why and what influenced a theorist to write the way they do.
Great stuff
Thank you good sir.
Another HIT from The Great Analytical Professor Sugrue
Brilliant talk, Micheal. I listened to another talk of yours on Machiavelli. This one was so much better. Thank you. Your channel is excellent.
This is awesome this what a college professor should be thank you
Hello, sir! It`s a real pleasure to hear you and to understand much better the philosophy with you, but I cannot believe that You had such a physical transformation during the year. Congratulations for the videos and keep it going on!
your lectures have left me craving more i love hearing you talk about philosophy

Thank you for you’re great work. As a 19 year old I have been profoundly inspired by your lectures to pursue a life of ceaseless contemplation.
Your lectures are the best content on UA-cam. They should be interruptions courtesy of the Emergency Broadcast System.
A great teacher never loses the gift of enlightening others and bringing history and theory to life. Thank you.
Thanks professor
Excellent 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯❤️
Sir, first I have saw your younger version videos.Suddenly, I got here and surprised that those were the videos filmed two decades earlier
Glad your getting your due on subscribers..... still not enough.... your the man you did the hard work of study so you could teach it to us dummies in a fraction of time.... big fan of the way I have seen you in other videos not say the persons theory/views/life is wrong or right (unless obvious) but open ended... big ups to you 💪 🙏🙏🙏
Edit: I feel I should thank you for continuing our shared passion.... we're blessed
Thank you! Please consider an episode about Guicciardini. They lived at the same time; it's interesting to compare their opposing approaches to history.
Brilliant!
Thank you for the lectures regarding Nietzsche.
Peace be with you brother! 🙏🙏🙏
You have some of the best philosophy videos on UA-cam. If you have not thought of it, investing in a good microphone and camera could satisfy the UA-cam algorithm and get you in front of more people, because you deserve it.
I tend to watch your lecture on Machiavelli every now and then. It's a joy to see another video on him as well. Can you recommend some other political philosophers that follow his intellectual traditions?
For further study, I'd recommend also work by Cary Nedderman (The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, for free, online, last time I looked), and Leo Paul de Alvarez, "The Machiavellian Enterprise," a scholarly study that achieved a second edition, available on Amazon, last time I looked.
You are of my hero’s.
Hope to see you back in a classroom setting, it will be such a great idea to create series like the Harvard Justice Series by Michael Sandel.
He’s literally dying
@@floresdta why? Could you give us more details?
good work
Interesting to hear Strauss come up here. Would love to hear a lecture on his thought!
There's legendary, then there's Sugrue on Machiavelli 👑
awesome work sir sugrue!, would love to hear you cover Nietzsche
yes
He has released two lecture on Nietzsche already. Check out his channel :)
This is one of those talks I would want to memorize.
The way he sets up the historical context is absolutely brilliant; you don't get that insight so incisively in Strauss, or Zuckert, or Mansfield--at least I haven't! I wonder if it is true what I've read, that Rousseau opined that "The Prince" is really a satire! Anyway, Thank You Michael Sugrue!
Love more content, Machiavelli. You should read Chanakya (just read some quotes by him you'll get a same flavour), he is the biggest equal to Machiavelli but isn't covered that much. PLEASE look into him and speak to him as well.
I highly suggest the book The Machiavelliana by James Burnham!
Aww yeah! A prepared Machiavelli lecture. Forget the price, we've got the king himself.
Thanks for all your videos, they are great. When the Internet first became popular, I assumed the future would be full of this sort of content. But instead of Intelligent and generous people like yourself making the world a better place, we got cats playing keyboards and teenagers twerking.
Informative
Would it be possible for you to integrate the separation of Henry the 8th with the Roman Catholic Church? As Henry is Machiavellian plus it’s the same period in time, perhaps both subjects are of importance?
You are the man. Loved this one, especially where you point out how the “politics is power” type of ideology is one focused on producing people with anti-social traits and tendencies. Not the best long-term strategy haha
At 18:00 "Friends close, but your enemies closer" maybe? Do we know from what thought that expression comes from? I feel like I'd definitely want him in my court.
Thank you for all your excellent videos and lectures. I suggest you get someone or yourself set a twitter and Facebook page for you. It helps grow your followers. Hope more people learn from you.
