One thing that I think needs correcting in LeVar's assumption is - that it wasn't one child, it was many!
Many scientists and engineers chose their professions because they were fascinated by television shows, such as Star Trek.
I am one of those, in a younger generation of engineers.

That's what he meant, out of many one of those kids specifically invented the flip phone.

I've read about mobile communication devices being describes in literature dating before the Original Start Trek (on stories written by Arthur C Clarke in the late 40''s.).
But if I'm not mistaken the automatic sliding doors that are common at airports and supermarkets and --the Enterprise, may have been invented by the series.
And just as described by LeVar here, someone watched this, thought it was a good idea and decided to build one.
Sliding doors are common, we don't even think about it, we expect it.
    That's awesome.

Can you think of another example of a technology used in science fiction that we now have today?

Ai, robots, cyborg, flat screens, electric vehicles, Aircraft carriers, Roads, lights, lightbulb, Polyester, Nuke, laser, Lazer, Train, trucks, Smart watch, facetime, etc... We told stories of gods taming humans to his will and subjugate them to build wonders in tribal, scifi stories, then we tame some animals and used them as beasts of burden, officially inventing farming.

Jules Verne wrote 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea decades before the modern submarine but so much of what he wrote about as fiction is reality in a modern sub.

Imagine what it's like to find out your white great-great-grandfather was a junior confederate soldier and behave so poorly about it. And remember, this is the fella that was ready to throw hands against women because they didn't agree with his ideology. I love Geordi. This guy is just a straight up racist.
