2015 Chevy Silverado with the same "Tapping Noise" with a the feeling of a misfire with no codes. I changed my spark plugs and wires about a year ago. I got 270k miles on mine. Been tapping for at least the last 100k. I took off heads (had leaking head gasket) , did VLOM mod and re seated the valves. New guides, and sanded the heads to .001 with a piece of glass and sandpaper. Cam was good, lifters were good. Been 5k miles after repair and all is good. Crazy what these engines will go through..

I did, thank you...I have a 2002 ,mine tick first start up with 160k mile ,after warm up it disappear, it gets close to 18 mpg on high cruze set...no complaints
The real question is? How many shops have installed lifters because of this? 😂 Sounds nothing like it but you never know nowadays….. Great video and great observation!
I have a 5.3 tore down now. 2 lifters quit pumping up and started off as a slight tapping. You can actually see the difference in the tops of the 2 pushrods where they were sloppy against the rocker arms. Sometimes it really turns out to be the lifters…
@@shadoughbanned I have done so many of the lifter jobs on GM AND Chrysler products too, Starting on a 5.7 Hemi pretty soon. If it fails silently, Lifters it is. As soon as it ticks, the cam is wrecked. On GM its usually an AFM lifter. On Ram 5.7 its usually intake cylinder 3. Which is not MDS (AFM) lifter. On both manufacturers cylinders 1,4,6,7 are the deactivated cylinders.
My 09, 5.3, barely started ticking and dealer replaced Cam and lifters at 4 years 364 days, under warranty, 60k miles. Didn’t tap that bad. Technician said he replaced lifters with LS7 lifters. 135K miles and no problems. Been using Mobile 1 since day one.
5.3s notorious for broken GM exhaust manifold bolts. I had one a few years ago and replaced them all with stainless . I believe there are kits out there
There is also a company that makes a bracket front/back L/R that wraps around the ends of the exhaust manifolds & draws them in on the gasket. It works well until the gasket is too deteriorated.
I recently fixed a ticker 2007 silverado. It was a loose sparkplug i can literally see it moving up and down as the cylinder fired against it . . crazy! Tightened spark plug and fixed the problem
Ive had my 2008 Chevrolet 4X4 for 7 years and it rurn me into mechanic . 4.56 gears , beefed up transmission with Teflon pads 3 to 4 pin , heavy vales job. Rebuild 5.3 with big cam, springs lifters . 430 hp and just put new coils , airmass flow, plugs , wires , o2 , map, evap , radiator, fans , larger transmission cooler , new A/C , heater coil , head lights, belts , pully , door controls , fuel pump.
Check out the comments on this video & the other ticking video. Other techs had interesting finds on their vehicles. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Real master of deduction 💯I got a 2017 that gives me that Shutter, misfire, loss of communication(I replaced master control switch haven't fixed it) Harsh tire wear after a front end colission.
I had this happen to my LS1, it even sounded like a spark jump vs a mechanical tap. When I purchased my 2K Vette it had a similar sound on cold start for about 10 seconds, number 5 plug was loose. Tightened it and it made the noise you had in the start of the video. I had unknowingly pulled the wire out of the coil slightly when pulling the hard to get off spark plug end. I knew I had no tap before and with my face right there I could hear it pretty clear. Snapped the coil end securely, end of tick.
The ONLY device on the PCM LIN bus is the auto grill shutter. Mine failed at 105k miles with no accidents. You will find a plethora of shutter replacements videos on UA-cam.
I have had the bolt retainer clip on the steering shaft pull the plug wire off if it isn't turned to one side a bit, it happened the last time it got a tune-up, it was the wire behind the one you found loose.
This is obviously a common problem. I had that exact same problem with my 2014 Sierra sle 1500. Also on a 5.3 liter engine and also the same cylinder. I knew exactly what the problem was as soon as I heard it, as this happened 3 or 4 times. I am pretty sure that the issue is that the wire is just a little too short and loosens from tension.
I recently found out that what happens is the boot is such a tight fit , that the air gets trapped inside and with heat , if the air doesn't come out on its own , the expansion from heat forces the boot off.
@@WrenchingWithKenny maybe that is what happened to my 2014. I changed the plug wires a month ago, and a couple weeks ago one popped right off on me(cylinder 5), and found a second one that was also coming off. i was using aftermarket plug wires and thought maybe it was the wires themselves, but if this is happening even with OEM plugs.......
I'll add one to the mix... If you park with the nose up ,like my neighbor was because of his driveway, the oil pump is not happy about it after a while. We listened ,we scoped ,he took it to places ,they did the same, nothing... Randomly he noticed it wasn't quite as bad when he parked turned around, nose down. within a day the noise was gone, that's at least 40,000 miles ago the way he uses it. So just one more random tick thing to be aware of.
I have an F150 with a 4.2 V5. It had a hydro lock and afterward developed a ticking sound. Turns out the rod was bent and the big end was turned just enough to kiss the piston skirt.
I've had the same thing happen on my 2018 Silverado V6 and 2018 Camaro SS. I don't know if it is the strength of the spark or what, but it has happened various times. Thanks for your videos.
Yup, wires coming off is not a super common issue but it does happen enough for a TSB! There's also a TSB for the radiator shutter wire getting pinched, and needs to be rerouted, or replaced if rubbed through.
People are nuts. as soon as I buy a used vehicle I throw money at it. right away I first changed my plugs, wires and all the grounds which are an issue on these. then I popped in a thermostat and a new master switch for the power windows. and on it goes.. ordered tires from Walmart 😉
Happened twice to us too. The Chevrolet dealer said they fixed our rig. Turns out they put in the old parts that we just ordered and she got to Arkansas to have the lifters fail again. We got a new engine. Hate chevrolet.
The coil wire happened to mine. Slight rough idle and hard to hear tick with the purge valve up front. Remembered the earlier video and got it. Also the tip with coil pack saved me too!
my 2003 Tahoe has an additional AC compressor belt and tensioner. Both wear quickly because of the location. When the belt looses resilency and tensioner get rusty it sounds like a valve tap.
Just had the same plug wire come off on our of our customers truck today. Found it quick as I've heard that arc sound many times in the past with mouse eaten plug wires and such.
That's spark jumping. That communication code is from the misfire. Maybe he jumped someone else. I think maybe you worry too much. Clear the codes and see what happens
Good call on that engine noise. As soon as you lifted the hood I could hear it sounded more like a "snapping" noise like a bad plug wire I guessed. But you showed the loose wire! WOW, do owners actually put 0w-20 oil in these engines like it showed on the oil fill cap!? I never go below 5w-30 in mine. Auto manufacturers are sacrificing our engines life in the search for higher CAFE Fuel milage numbers to me Regulation and impress the buyers.
Most people really don't know anything and let shops or quick lube place change their oil . Most shops or QL places will use what the manufacturer recommends unless the customer requested different. If the receipt shows one weight , and the vehicle calls for another , then that's a potential claim if something were to happen to the motor . Especially in NY where I spent most my life . The DMV doesn't play in that state . If a customer files a complaint with the DMV and says , let's say , that their DOD lifter failed (common failure) because the shop used the wrong weight oil, the DMV will investigate and they could hold the shop liable for tge repair!!
it could be the tires themselves are defective,, alot of tires are being made in the phillipines and they are junk. I have a set of yokohamas on my van,, ok one of the got a nail in it and couldnt be fixed, so discount tire replaced it with a yokohama made in the new plant in the phillipines,. the original set was made in the USA... , it started feathering badly, it was on the back, and when they rotated my tires they put it on the front and the van started pulling to the right,, so I told them I wanted a tire made in the usa.. they replaced the tire with a new goodyear, and its doing great so far. DIscount tire likes to replace tires under road hazzard with cheap knock off tires made in third world countries.. they did the same thing when one of my hankook dynapros went bad, the tire they replaced it with looked exactly the same, but it was a shitty house brand.,, now I know how they operate and will insist on the exact replacement tire, or get a refund.. if u need a replacement tire under warranty, call first and ask if they have them in stock,, THEN tell them u need a tire replaced under warranty.. if u tell them u need a tire replaced right off the bat, they will likely say they dont have any in stock, but they have a "compatible" replacement tire for you,, and will try to give u a shit tire.
@@Biosynthnut yep, just dont always assume a tire wear issue is always something besides the tire itself. with my van, the bad tire was on the LEFT front and it was pulling to the RIGHT,,. almost sent me down a rabbit hole until I felt the tire.. discount tire had rotated them a week before, and they didnt catch the tire coming apart. if I had assumed they did thier job and checked all my tires, I would have naturally thought it was something besides the tire,, I DONT TRUST ANYONES WORK OR OPINION ANYMORE.. I always check for myself.. most people have thier head in thier ass nowdays and are distracted by a damned I phone.
I have a 2000 GMC with a 5.3 with 2,75000 miles on it and just have noticed a little ticking but I’ve never had any major problems with it. All a 5.3 is is the old 327 engine.
All the LS/LT engines (3rd, 4th, 5th gen) share with the 1st gen smallblock is the bore spacing. A 5.3 is 325CI and has a completely different bore and stroke, it just happens to be a similar displacement to a 327.
Had this happen on my #7 on my 5.3L as well. Misfire only happened at high speeds and was random but not enough to trigger a code. We thought it was the transmission slipping when accelerating. Honest transmission shop owner drove it and in 1 min said “this is not a transmission, but i have a hunch”. Took a look under the hood and found it, Plugged it back in and hasnt been a problem since. Guy refused to let me pay him.
Lots of chevy truck owners have this common complain of “vibrations”. Theyve changed exhaust, and gone thru other very technical/mechanical repairs. The real culprit is actually, just a worn out tires. Not necessarily bald tires. Anything wear at its almost max.
They give you G.Y. Wranglers stock. those are mud & snow tires, very noisy and inadequate for highway use. they wear out quick, then shake. but are great for snow and trails.. I got 4 Yokohama Geolandars for mine at $199 ea, and mounted them myself with a manual tire changer that cost $60. beautiful highway rubber, 285/70R17.. big mamas when they're standing there next to you off the rims. shops here want $50 ea to mount if you don't buy the tires from them. the $200 I saved bought a new battery.
I dont know this man's prices, but no one pays for knowledge, we want things done for cheap, but also not to be taken advantage of. Kind of a catch 22.
I like how thorough you were with your investigation. I'm a roofer and I do the same type of thing with roof repairs. I think you need some work on your conclusion drawing though 🤣 the hood could have easily just been taken off for better access, looks ECT and the truck could have more easily been jumping another vehicle vs needing a jump. Good work though! Will watch more for sure.
I had a rattling noise, no codes that sounded just like it was under my driver's seat & would happen on a smooth road, rough road, while in gear but when I put it in neutral it would go away! It would never happen when a Tech Test Drove it! Found out it was a loose passenger side hood bolt on my 02' Blazer ZR2 4x4. Funny how these noises can travel.
Wish my ticking on my 6.0 in my H2 Hummer was a plug wire coming loose. Mine is those stupid ass rusty exhaust manifold bolt heads that break off. That is a nice a Silverado, that color and whole package is exactly what I want eventually.
Had lifter failure on my 6.2 this past weekend while pulling a 3500 lb trailer through Arkansas. Was told by the dealership it's a common problem on the 6.2 and 5.3. Damaged the cam so pretty much a full rebuild. Always buy the extended warranty no matter what vehicle it is. It ALWAYS pays for itself
@@klathamtexaslandrealtor Not many people buy Nissan's but this is my second one and they've been flawless. I wouldn't touch their cars but have been very happy with the trucks.
Big trucks and SUV that take 0w-20, I live in a warmer climate all rear round and use 5w-30 instead and seems too work a lot better. For example 2022 BMW x3 takes 0w-20 but it’s never reached below 50 and 5w-30 seems to make the engine smoother and quieter
We have a 17-passenger bus with a similar engine (6.0 liter, I think). The suspension is inappropriate for the conditions it is operated under (air bags). The ride is extremely rough. It had a plug wire fall off. Makes me think that the accident may be the cause.
Just to let you know I have a 6.2 L Chevy Silverado and I had a lifter failure the lifters collapsed so yes they are out there they do happen I fought with the company they tried to just replace the two different lifters that failed but eventually I had them replace all 16 so that's something you need to look at when they do fight you on this you need to have all 16 replaced not just one or two good luck
If they replaced those 16 with the same type, guess what? They put a bandaid on a bullet wound! Turn off your AFM\DFM, all depending on which one you have. That's the only way to be sure that your lifters won't stick in the collapsed position (what they do during cylinder deactivation) and then not pop back up.
We went through that they identified the lot part number that was bad so they did not replace them with that particular Lot number they replaced them with a known Lot number or part number that were considered good they have identified the malfunctioning lifters yes I had to go around and around with them on that to make sure they didn't stick bad lifters back in there the same Lot number and part number as the ones that were in there that were defective
@@waynec211 And you believe that? GM has been having the lifter issue for years. Unless they changed parts supplier, I wouldn't take it on any long trips. Like I'd said though, if you disable your fuel management system, which can be done right from your dash, then you'll run the risk of it happening once again. You may notice up to 1 mpg difference in your fuel economy, which to avoid it happening again, sure seems worth it. Ask yourself this, if GM knew it was just a certain lot number of them that were causing the issue, why have they still been installing them in their 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s for the last ten years? Only thing I don't get, is why they haven't changed suppliers by now.
Yes I was considering disabling the fuel management system I had heard that could be possible problem too so who knows what the hell to believe but I guess I will look into disabling this fuel management system I don't like it anyway it's annoying
I think the shutter blocks off airflow to the radiator to get the engine up to operating temperature quicker when it's cold outside not for aerodynamics.
Back in 16 I got a 13 GMC with 10K on it put a little 6K on it and a dod lifter did indeed fail. Found out it had pistons rods and bearings done just before I got it Never knew why and far as I ever found out or was able to tell it was not a abused truck I got rid of that POS soon after I got i back Thankfully it was still under warranty
Before I go any further into watching the video, the sound sounds like a broken ignition coil wire or just coil. It sounds like electricity is finding an early exit
Factory lift, like any other lift really brings about the need for longer Tie rods. The rack being attached to the chassis has to reach an increased distance to the outer tie rod socket. I wonder if the factory really thought about that?
Usually packages like that are more dealer installed aftermarket than real factory things. Just one of those things where they can install $10k of stuff and charge someone $15k extra because it’s bigger and meaner than a standard one. That one for sure needs the front end checked close and an alignment. Probably drives like crap too, but has been that way so long they don’t notice.
This was a good video to keep on the back burner for the oil “I seen this UA-cam video once” Then reach down and plug it in with the lightning pack still connected😂
Check your exhaust manifold bolts, they tend to shear the bolt heads off of the ones closest to the firewall. It'll have the "Tic tic tic" and it will fade out after a while. If you lose enough of the manifold bolts you'll start to get that lawnmower sound. Or it could be the classic Chevy piston slap noise from engine wear. The pistons will rattle around in their bores until everything warms up and expands slightly.
I had 17' silverado with the 5.3 z71 and around 100,000 miles i had a dead miss on #3. I ended up changing the plugs and in the process found the #3 plug wire was broken internally. Fast forward a month or so had the exact same issue twice but with the aftermarket wires from the parts store. Just outa Curiosity can you put a dab of Dialectic grease both ends of the plug wire to help?
Yes. The dialectric grease can be used on both ends without issue. In all honesty though, I tend not to use it on ends that are close to the exhaust as I've found they seem to really get stuck onto the plug and subsequently tear when removing . This usually seems to be the issue for me after many miles however
my 2014 did that a couple weeks ago after i put the new plug wires on. the old ones were on there solidly. perhaps they changed something on the wires themselves?

The tire wear is indicative of cranking up torsion bars or installing a leveling kit. Any time the suspension is touched it needs an alignment.

I did too since the difference with electric tap and Metal tap
Rainman ray would've figured it out. Go watch his videos. He's a genius at this sh*t.
I’ve had to coils go out on mine and paid the dealer a good bit to replace them. Something tells me I got screwed.

Check for broken manifold bolts as well. Had 2 rear broken ones on my 2014. Kenny has other vids on that diagnosis. Thanks Ken!!

U1510 sets when the shutter actuator takes a dump. U1510 is LIN BUS and the shutter has LIN BUS line to it. Replacing the shutter resolves the issue.
5.7 never let me down nor missed a beat
I have had the bolt retainer clip on the steering shaft pull the plug wire off if it isn't turned to one side a bit, it happened the last time it got a tune-up, it was the wire behind the one you found loose.
My 2017 Silverado had the same problem it got pulled off multiple times before I figured it out that it was the clip on the steering shaft
Great fix! Wish he was my neighbor 😅
GM likes tight harnesses. The things they do to save a penny. Either that or their engineers need to learn about wiring.

Turns out the rod was bent and the big end was turned just enough to kiss the piston skirt.
really cool, love to see mechanics ask why, rather than just fix n go.
Guess i will check this once go back to work monday. See if that causing the ticking noise.
Excellent video, great content , your sharing of experience is worth thousands of dollars!

You are one great mechanic. 👍
Eric O at south main auto just replaced one of those shutter assemblies and it was a pita to do.
cold start rough idle can also be the high pressure investors as well its covered up to 100k miles had it happen to my 2017 silverado

Tires were trashed. Chopped up, feathering in the front, alignment wear. complete squared off on the rear.
it could be the tires themselves are defective,, alot of tires are being made in the phillipines and they are junk.
@@randy1ization Possible. Looks like he never rotated them or balanced them. The one I worked on.

Great video, Kenny.
I have the same code on mine, and it reads misfire too. I'm going to check that out.
I had problems with vibrations when slowing down and with a AFM Disabler they went away.

It would never happen when a Tech Test Drove it!
Found out it was a loose passenger side hood bolt on my 02' Blazer ZR2 4x4. Funny how these noises can travel.
I had a similar ticking coming out of my car when I was younger. Believe it or not it ended up being an exhaust leak at the manifold.
Happen in Mexico 2015 4.3L Spark plug wire came loose, misfire on hard throttle.
Why did the wire come out? Probably not clicked in when installed. Or maybe some one climbed in for other repair and pulled it off accidentally.
.
Wish my ticking on my 6.0 in my H2 Hummer was a plug wire coming loose. Mine is those stupid ass rusty exhaust manifold bolt heads that break off. That is a nice a Silverado, that color and whole package is exactly what I want eventually.

We have a 17-passenger bus with a similar engine (6.0 liter, I think). The suspension is inappropriate for the conditions it is operated under (air bags). The ride is extremely rough. It had a plug wire fall off. Makes me think that the accident may be the cause.
I could actually tell just from the sound that was an electrical arcing which meant something with the ignition.
And then 4 more fail.
I just subscribed because Kenny knows his stuff!!!!!!
I think the shutter blocks off airflow to the radiator to get the engine up to operating temperature quicker when it's cold outside not for aerodynamics.
The Black Widow editions are not factory editions. They are done by an aftermarket company and sold through the dealer.
Yup, that's what he said back in the beginning of the video.
Good call.
Black widow is NOT factory. Actually a service bulletin mentions that black widow may have suspension issues not covered by gm warranty
This was a good video to keep on the back burner for the oil “I seen this UA-cam video once”
Then reach down and plug it in with the lightning pack still connected😂
I've got a 5.3 that did that, it ended up being the o ring that seals the oil pick up tube to the pump. The o rings degrade from heat.
Very interesting diagnosis.
I’ve got a ticking 5.3 on cold start. It’s loud and fades out after about 45 seconds. I’m assuming it’s lifter related?
It could be an exhaust leak . Check out this other video I made a few months ago . ua-cam.com/video/itYFqSMdqmI/v-deo.html
Mines does the same thing..exhaust leak I'm sure of it
Check your exhaust manifold bolts, they tend to shear the bolt heads off of the ones closest to the firewall.
Quit lying guys, Chevys don't break exhaust manifold bolts....
This usually seems to be the issue for me after many miles however
The second you popped the hood i said that's a spark jumping around
my 2014 did that a couple weeks ago after i put the new plug wires on. the old ones were on there solidly. perhaps they changed something on the wires themselves?
