  • If you ever take an oil painting class one of the first things they will have you do is an alla prima still life study like the one I do in this video. In the video I explain the key points to getting the most out of the exercise and how to build an alla prima sketch from thin paint to thick paint.

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

This demo really helps me see how to use the properties of the oil paint to its full effect. I was trying too hard to get the right color instead of allowing it to come out on its own by blending. The push and pull you talk about makes sense now.

I’ve been watching your videos on my TV, so haven’t been able to thumbs up your videos, I’m getting around to doing it now (please forgive the sudden flood of likes from me, I have watched all the videos from beginning to end). I’ve watched at least a dozen of your videos and they have been soooo good! Thank you 🙏

People think the looks is what makes the art beautiful, it’s actually what went into it that makes it beautiful. Side note: amazing panting btw!

Love it. I did just a flower pot yesterday. I’m really new so shading and perspective is kinda difficult. I was using charcoal. But the oil seems easier in a way. Going to have to whip them out!

Okay...I swear I'm here to learn to paint...
...but am I the only one who got 39 seconds and paused so I look this guy up? His voice is so freaking sexy that I had to see what he looked like. No disappointment.
