Where I live, there’s so many people who speak Spanish. The conversation with the guy about helping out the person at the cash register, it would be so cool to reach a level like that one day for me. When I was grocery shopping yesterday, I heard like 4 different families communicating to each other in Spanish. One aisle over as I was looking at stuff, I heard an adult man & some kids talking about finding something for grandpa? They kept repeating “abuelo” in their conversation so either I was mishearing, they were looking for something on grandpa’s list, or they lost their grandpa in the store which like sometimes old people do wander off but I’m sure they’d be more panicked & looking around for him if it was the last option.
A lot of the time there’s people in the store on phones that’s on speaker, usually speaking in Spanish, they help them out with translating at checkout & I guess sometimes reading labels even though a lot of tags & stuff has English & Spanish on it, guess not all do because I saw a woman holding up different things to her phone & the person o the other end would say stuff in Spanish so I assumed she was reading the label or something for her, maybe just asking opinions on color but I didn’t catch them saying any names of colors & I know some of them since I learned colors in Spanish when I took world languages in middle school, only a few colors stuck but at least I can still remember them.
Would be nice if I knew enough to lend some assistance sometimes, so far mostly just doing Duolingo, watching some videos, & I have a set of flash cards but I should do more, just not trying to overwhelm myself right now since I’m only a beginner. I moved to where I am currently from somewhere else & yeah, we had plenty of people who spoke Spanish where I was before but here, there’s so many more. We’re like 45 minutes to an hour away from a city that my dad grew up in, his family lives here & my parents moved here when they retired so I decided to follow in order to be with family. When my dad was growing up on the farm in the 50’s & 60’s, his family hired on people from Mexico to come up & work on the farm, apparently it was common practice since I saw a documentary on it in a museum near where I use to work back before the pandemic started. Where I’m at has a lot of people who retired & moved here, there’s also a lot of people in general who don’t know any Spanish, a lot who only know Spanish, & a lot who speaks both Spanish & English so there isn’t too bad of an English gap. Actually, yesterday when I was going into the grocery store, someone with their family asked some guy for directions, he gave them in English but they guy who asked turned to his family, they said a few things in Spanish then asked the person to repeat the directions in Spanish & he did so. It’s not a requirement to know it but I’m sure handy to have & dunno if years into the future when I can actually understand stuff, I could help someone who needs it but I’m hoping I can. I am indeed a slow learner.
