No, really - you can’t have these shoes. Well, just not forever because we need them back. Why? Because they’re recyclable. These shoes are made from beans. Yes, beans. Castor beans to be precise. Run in them, return them and we give you new beans sorry, shoes. And repeat. Own the run, not the shoe.
It's a subscription service for $29.99 a month.
We revolutionized running once and we're about to do it again (No big deal.)

Great idea. I really like your concept and that you started thinking sustainability and circularity comprehensively. However, for me as an occasional runner, the abo model is very expensive. Leasing the shoe for three years will cost me a thousand euros (am I right?). Maybe you could think of a price that ist variably oriented on the wearing of the shoe (e.g. starting with 29,95€ for the first year than 24,95 € for the second year and 19,95€ for the third if you are still wearing the same shoe)? Lifetime extension and creating long-lasting product is also part of the Circular Economy and could be a valuable strategy for you and for your costumers (saving resources and money)
Love that. It‘s two bangers at once:
1: creating a sneaker out of only one base material
2: the subscription model. Crazy! How come nobody came up with this earlier? Props to you guys!!! This is massive!
-> now I got another challenge for you: why is a shoebox always made from cardboard? Is a shoebox even needed at all times?
Hi Rainer,
Thanks so much for your comment and it's a fair question you have there!
We will use 100% recycled cardboxes starting in season 2021. Cardboxes play a crucial role in the logistics process (keep shoes clean, dry, stackability of shoes etc.) so it is not that easy to get rid of the boxes. But we’ve started working on this topic and watch out, the Cyclon will have a different packaging concept, so stay tuned!
On ♥️
@@On-Running at 2:48 and 3:07. Was there and saw that! Little did I know what kind of climate friendly shoe he was wearing! Didn't even realise it was an "On" shoe because I was so fascinated by the remote controlled car used to record. I was there standing and saw both his runs.👍
2:48 I was there when they were recording with an rc car and little did I know....that that would be for an On add, that that was a "Cyclon" prototype....that I would realise that 1 year later after being there. I travel there every day. so cool.
Signed up. Can't wait to road test them. Thanks for doing what you do.
woooow. this is insane. i love this, so, so much.
Hey Jordan, thanks so much for your kind message. We would love to see you running in the shoe!
I signed up for them and am very interested to see how they will perform. A lot of the local runners know I like the On brand.

I don't understand when you can replace the shoes, there is no information on your web page... why is not advertised?
Damn I saw your ad I didn’t know you could grow shoes out of beans
Absolutely brilliant and can't wait to see how the product develops even further 'Accolades to the development team and its investors' 👏
why the subscription? why not just sell the shoe for a price then give an incentive for them to give it back?
Hey Ethan,
We really need back the shoe, because we need the material to make new shoes! :-)
So a subscription model makes it easy for the costumer, since we also organise the logistics for you.
I agree. Subscription feels like a way to hook us in and keep us paying long-term. I don’t feel comfortable doing that. I love On shoes but lately they’ve been coming up with more sophisticated marketing schemes to sell their new products. I would very much prefer to buy and recycle for an incentive.
I'd rather do that instead of a subscription service
@@papagruffalo9750 its $30 like every month if you work it out thats 6 months at $180 for whats claimed to be their high performance running shoe/flat thats typical lifespan of most running shoes
@@On-Running don't lie. It's to make more money
Hi, how are the parts of the shoes joined together? If adhesive is used, then surely the shoe won't be 100% recyclable?
I don't get it, so basically you rent a pair of shoes for $360 per year ? That doesn't sound right
Hi there :-)
Thanks a lot for your question!
On our mission to make Cyclon as sustainable as possible, we ask our subscribers only to exchange their shoes once they've been used for their entire lifecycle. We expect the Cyclon running shoe to provide you with unmatched performance up to 600km (that’s just over 3.5 Mont Blanc Ultra Marathons). That’s a lifespan of around 6-9 months so we’re happy to exchange your shoe twice a year.
Please find more information about the subscription model here: bit.ly/35DCceA
Based on the mileage of the shoe. I would need a new pair every 8 weeks. But you've stated you would only offer 2 pairs a year
Awesome idea!
Hi Benedikt!
Thanks so much for your support!
I really want to keep the shoe. How much do pay.
What if i lie, i lost the shoe?
And now I really want to try it.
I have been using on cloudrush for over 2months now, and it works really great on a dry surface. However, when the road is damp, not even wet, the shoes can perform well. It can be very slippery. I would like to know if on address this issue.
Hi! :-)
The sole of Cyclon is not as grippy, since it has very minimal traction lines. Therefore it's not designed for wet weather.
If you are looking for a product specifically designed for wet weather running, you might want to have a look here: bit.ly/2G1o84B
Brillant !! 저도 신발 구독하고 싶어요. 한국에서 구독하는 건 해외배송이라 어려울까요? 😢 I want the Shoes, and the service, but I don't know that whether it could be on Southkorea.
This is so cool

what's the outsole made of?
1. Is the bioplastic 100% bio-based?
2. Is the bioplastic compostable (does the product meet all the requirements in the European Norm EN 13432 and/or the US Standard ASTM D6400)?
Hi there,
Thanks so much for your questions, we hope we can answer them for you:
1.) Not the entire shoe is biobased. It is more than 50% currently and this material is made out of castor beans.
2.) No, this shoe is not designed for composting. We need the material back to re-make new shoes.
You can find more questions answered here in case you are curious:
www.on-running.com/cyclon
@@On-Running Thank you for those answers. One more question:
1- Does the recycling process degrade the material, forcing you to:
a) mix it with new material to maintain your quality standards? &/or
b) limit its use in the production of new shoes (recycled material only used for certain parts of the shoe while others are fully made of new material)? &/or
c) get rid of the material after it went through recycling a certain amount of times?
Hi :-)
Thanks so much for your questions! Let's see whether we can answer some of them:
a) Yes, we will need to add a little bit of virgin material to the recycling process.
b) We start with using the recycled material for our speedboards first and then also into all the other components of the shoe.
c) Just from material science, a material can't be used indefinitely. So we don't know yet how many times we can recycle the material. This is all part of this journey we are on and we are learning. The subscription models helps us to get the shoes back so that we can work on the performance of the recycled material.
Hope that helps you out!
Would like to return my shoes for bigger size. Easier said than done. Any one know, best way to get hold of them?
Hi Adi!
Best way is to approach our customer service. However, you should be able to exchange your shoes by following this process here: bit.ly/34eeMu3
@@On-Running yes, I've done that already, as there appeared to be a technical issue with the returns system. Kept looping me around. A manual exchange request had to be raised, manually.
How to buy these shoes ?
Hi Gorav
Thanks so much for your question!
You can sign up here: www.on-running.com/cyclon
A one-time payment grants you access to the Cyclon service and serves as your first monthly payment. Be quick though, it's first come, first served (more details on www.on-running.com/cyclon).
The Cyclon shoe is created with materials and engineering methods that have never been used before, so we are still fine-tuning the exact timeline. But we're on track for the first shoes to drop in fall 2021.
If they are made in China I will not buy them but if they are made elsewhere I would certainly spend $30 a month for this
Not made in China, Vietnam
Fantastic goal: "making people see the used shoe as a valuable good". And maybe your marketing plan will help you get to true recycling. However, I don't believe what you are implying!
(1) If the shoe is plant-based, recycling is not so important/valuable, so you have no/little environmental incentive to recycle.
(2) At 30$/month, the shoe is paid for after a few months, and you have no financial incentive to recycle.
Sell the shoes, and buy them back. That leaves runners with the incentive to keep it until they need a new one, and it would prove that you are actually recycling.
Just based on listening to your business plan, I question whether you have technology (or incentive) to recycle AT ALL.
Hi there :-)
Thanks so much for your comment and feedback, we highly appreciate it.
The reason why we need the shoe back is so we can create new ones. With circular products we have a zero waste and a reduced impact on the environment. That linear line? Now a virtuous circle of Produce-Use-Reuse-Produce…
We call the Cyclon shoe “The Shoe You’ll Never Own” for good reason. The Cyclon service wouldn’t meet our sustainability goals if we didn’t get them back. On our mission to use less virgin material, we need the shoes back to keep recycling them so Cyclon is only available on subscription.
On our mission to make Cyclon as sustainable as possible, we ask our subscribers only to exchange their shoes once they’ve been used for their entire lifecycle. We expect the Cyclon running shoe to provide you with unmatched performance up to 400km (1000 laps around an athletics track or almost 2.5 Mont Blanc Ultra Marathons). That’s a lifespan of around 6-9 months so we’re happy to exchange your shoe twice a year.
Hopefully that gives you a better understanding on why we are big into circularity.
@@On-Running Again, I applaud your initiative and ideals, but your response didn't give me any better idea; I see only the marketing rhetoric I described.
So: What fraction of material will be, or can be, new? How can you remain accountable to any number you quote?
400 km is 3 weeks to some, and 2 years to others. A rational pricing system would leave that up to the user. As far as a business model, you can price-discriminate much better than a fixed rental rate does, and expand your market from the narrow niche who fits your usage rate.
Again, to be blunt / constructively confrontational: I don't believe you. I do not think you are recycling shoe material.
@@On-Running Hi On, I am a swiss runner and although I really like the idea I think the subscription price will be an obstacle for most of the people. I own a cloud flow which I paid 210CHF for two years ago and they are still in great state. Don't need to replace them at the moment which prouve ON provide amazing products with great quality. Here I come, I would like to be part of this process but if I paid 35 CHF a month it means my shoe will cost me 420 CHF a year which is really expensive to compare to a shoe I paid 210CHF and I use for two years now and will still live another year or so. Also, I believe changing the product every 6 months isn't really necessary and it's totally not responsible, even if it's recycled. You better ask less for the subscription which will attract more people and me and also give them the opportunity to swap them only once a year which a believe is enough and more responsible. The goal here is to create a circular system but in the same time not to push to consumption. I would appreciate an answer and still hope you'll review your price point because I would really like to be part of the process but it's currently not affordable for me.
As I am SwissAsian
So supportive all environmental recycling 💯 %
So thrilled to have ON of my 5 best of training shoe ever 👍👍✨✨✨✨✨✨🙋🏻💖🇨🇭
