I see what the late Julian Mincham meant with the oboe portraying the beauty of the work of the Holy Spirit, & the strings representing steps of life, or as Dire Straits put it, the walk of life. In spite of recurring difficulties we have to keep going for our blink of an eye 70 yr or whatever length life. That length pales into onsignificance in the context of the age of the earth & universe... God's creation. I took Julian's comments a little further.

His comments are insightful, but generally he didn't always get what Bach meant by Soli Deo gloria. Sometimes he did. A genuine musicologist. Im amateur, but have been privileged to sing lots of Bach. H moll Messe precipitated a hypermanic breakdown for me in 1981.
