By far the best and most in depth video on this fish. One of my favorites. Can't wait to order from you and add to my collection in my 125!!
Howdy Crypto,
Thanks, my man! It was good to see you at the livestream tonight. A 125...that is such a great size of tank. Do you know what fish you want to get for it? Plans for a scape?
Dans Fish I've had my 125 set up for 2 years now. It's super stable and never had any issues with water quality. Its also planted. Right now I have a mix of rainbows and also have a school of 3 roseline sharks. I want to add to both fish soon
Ive kept them at 70 degrees with Dojo loaches, zebra danios and other cooler water tropicals. It went very well for me and they grew huge. Right now I have another batch in a tank with some Amazon fish so I have them at about 78. Good to hear that won't cause them any issues.
Thanks for sharing your experience with them. They seem like pretty tolerant fish as long as the water is clean and has plenty of 02.
Hi Dan. I know that this is an old video...but these Fish are my favorites. I love Denisons.
Leo, I like 'em too! Still one of the neatest cyprinids in the hobby.
Nice group of these guys in a planted tank would look sweet. Thx for sharing this information.
Sweet indeed, GDee!
Good to see more videos from you Dan. I keep and love these and would like to try Mascara barbs but can never find them.
Those mascara barbs sure are nice...I hope you find some soon!
These are among the most beautiful tropical fishes in the world. I have seen them in the Periyar river Kaladi. I have also seen a similar barb with a thick gold and black line from the eyes to the tail and nearly 6 inches long in a lake in Himachal Pradesh. I think there are many striped barbs but this one is the most beautiful of them all.
They are stunning, Ravi. It must be amazing to see them in their natural habitat. Sounds like the ultimate freshwater snorkeling dip to me!
Thank you for the information on captive bred vs. wild caught.
They belong to two river in Kerala (S.India) called Pamba and Achenkovil. Both these rivers are also endemic to the famous pea puffer, long fin Kerala barb and rosy barb. I have seen roselines as big as 15 cm in their natural habitat.
Vishnu,
Wow, thanks for the information! Do you usually see them in slow water or fast flowing water? If you happen to have any pictures of the natural habitat, I'd love to see them.
Best,
Dan
Hi Dan, they are known as ""miss Kerala" here. I have seen them few years ago at the start of river' Achenkovil'(also the place name). I do have the pictures of the habitat. The water was pretty clear with lots of rocks and yellowish gravel/sand and lots of pebbles at a depth of 1-2 meters where i saw them. The flow would really depend on the season/monsoon but you would get an idea from the pics. drop me a mail i will forward it to you. vishnu.nair@outlook.com
Thanks for the info, Vishnu!
I recently picked up 8 of these and they're doing wonderful with my praecox rainbows and angelfish
Thank you. I only have 3 in my community tank with opolin gourami and neons xxx
Nice one Dan, they are seriously swift fish! Don't think you could ever get bored of them , pretty and active. :)
I agree. Beautiful and active...they are anything but boring.
I keep mine with my Discus at 84 degrees. Love the fish, always cruising around looking for scraps.
Great video Dan
Kyle, I've never tried to keep them at high temps. Good to know it works for you. How long have you been keeping them with the discus?
Dans Fish I would guess they’ve been in there for a year now...about 2.5” when they went in, now about 5.5-6”
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know.
Nice video. You speak very well. Good valuable information. Thank you.
Thanks Fresh Falcon...glad you liked the vid.
Good info Dan I like that you have told people that such stories are nonsense
Thanks Courtz...someone had to do it.
hey dan great video
don't really want to get into it but i wil
what r your thoughts about general hardness and tds for these guys??
my tds out of the tap is at 500 so i do wonder about this
thanks
Was fortunate to see these barb in the wild recently
I am so jealous!
I have an open top looks like they are Jumpers right
Hello Casey,
They have a reputation as jumpers, but I never close the lids on my tank of roselines and so far none have jumped. I'm not saying that they can't, just that mine haven't.
Best,
Dan
They only jump if stressed they tend to stay near the bottom
So in a 75, do you still suggest a group bigger than 6? Or is that for more a 125? Im totally welcome to adding to the group (6 currently) but don’t want to over do it either
6 is sufficient in a 75, but I personally enjoy them best in bigger groups, so I'd probably keep 12 or so in a 75 myself. But that's just me. Different people enjoy keeping fish in different ways.
Hi Dan. Will their tails grow back. I had an Electric blue Acara nip a couple of mine on their tails and bit little pieces off. Thanks
I'm diggin your content and I'm diggin your angels in the background. JUST SUBBED. LETS KEEP IT FUNKY IN 2K18!
Funky it is!!!
If the tail is up what should I do? Do I need more salt??? Please help. I never had problems with them.
Thanks for the information
You are welcome.
A guy at petco said the yellow on the tails glow under certain light colors...I have a 7 color hygger light but can't figure out which color it is that makes them glow....anyone heard of this?
Hey Dan are these the same as the ones behind you in your live streams? Or are they the gold?
The ones behind me in the livestream are the golds.
Thanks for a very informative video, am just about to take the plunge & order 50 for my refurbish 600g tank where they will be the centerpiece fish. Continue to be a little puzzled about the correct tempreture. Have read they are a subtropical fish that need slightly lower tempreture than your normal tropicals, and highly oxygenated water. Yet l see some people keeping them with Discus & they look healthy. Was hoping to add my Gymogeophagus who certainly need a cooler winter period.
Paul, a big group on a 600 gallon is going to be stunning!!! You are going to see some neat behavior that is lost in smaller aquariums. Glad the vid helped...I think they are pretty flexible on temps.
I saw two semi albino R.B.'s and they were very beautiful..all the colors are there minus the silver. But at $50 each,I decided to wait until the price comes down..or LFS gets younger small fish.
I know the fish you mean...They are very nice. I, like you, am waiting for the price to stabilize a bit.
I want to purchase 4
We just purchased one and were unaware that the needed such a large space nor that they needed to have multiples. We have a 10 gallon tank and 3 other fish in there. He seems happy so far, but I want to make sure that he is healthy. Any ideas on what to do would be great. Thanks!
It is also called miss kerala
Good to know, thanks for the info, Mini!
Can we keep the denisonii without aerator in a concrete tank (radius 1meter)
saya minat ikan ini apa bisa di bantuu
I dig roseline sharks. I expect to get a group of them when a get a bigger tank. What kind of corydoras where those?
Those are skunk corys, or Corydoras arcuatus.
They are also known as Miss Kerala.
Coz they are from Kerala, India.
Cool, thanks for the info!
Sir how to identify which is male or female please 🙏
Hi I started with 5 one passed but the 4 I have are showing signs of mating how can I help them? Would you know?
What are they doing it’s hard to breed these guys
@@johnnytapia3869 the females are showing the male they r ready and they dance a bit but they are super fast I think it's the size of the aquarium itself. And I just upgraded 😅
@@danyolmode Ovaprim is a good fish hormones to get them breeding but they have to be atleast 4 to 5 inches
I have some south American cichlids, pictus catfish, pearl gourami and a senegal bichir. Do you think a group would do ok with them? I have a 65gal
I think adult roselines would do okay with the pearl gouramis. I've seen bichirs take down pretty large fish, so I'm not sure a full grown (20") senegal bichir would be safe. Also, some of those SA cichlids get pretty big...depends on what species you have. Same with the pictus cats...some species get pretty big.
So a case can be made that the hobby actually has SAVED the species? It is amazing to me that they exist AT ALL in the wild considering the MASSIVE water pollution and habitat loss in India.
Unfortunately, it is not just in India. It is in widespread. In the USA, we have wiped out many species due introduced species and habitat destruction. Florida water ways look more and more like Amazon water ways year by year. When a fish catches on in the hobby and is bred in large numbers, like these Roseline Barbs, it can literally save the fish from disappearing of the face of the Earth.
Just like you the first time I seen them blew my mind also. I have a question if you don't mind answering. I have a 40gl fluval profile tank, it's a rather high tank and about 24 long, 24 high, 18 depth. It's also generously planted. For live stock I have Otos, albino plecos, cardinal tetras, gouramis and zebra danios, all small species. Can I add 6 or 12 of these to my community tank with out worrying about compatibility? I realize that you mentioned 55gl tanks but I only have space for a 40gl, would this be a problem? Thanks and great video.
Hello Richard,
The roselines are very strong, fast, active swimmers. They are going to do best in a tank that is 4' long or larger.
@@DansFish Thank you very much Dan, certainly wouldn't want my fish to be unhappy or stressed. Thanks again
I'm trying to think of something similar that would do well in your tank, but I'm coming up blank. Anyone else????
@@DansFish I really appreciate it Dan, but I think my set is at where it's going to be, I'll add more of what I have except for the danios...Thank you so much for all your help.
Just got a few more Roseline and they are not much lighter in color then my other Roselines, wondering if this is due to age or if I should be worried about sickness. Also wondering if its just roselines vary in color. Any help would be much appreciated!
Howdy Joshua,
Congrats on the new fish. In all honesty, I have no idea. If they are new, I would give them a couple of weeks to settle in. If they have settled in, it could be a different line that has different color, it could be a difference in diet, it could be mood, it could be illness, it could be stress. I wish I could help you, but I would just be guessing.
How would you recomend getting good colour on them if you have juvenailes?
Juveniles just don't have nearly as much color as adults. Live food tends to bring out the best colors possible, especially wild-caught daphnia and the like.
I have a question about the Roseline Sharks, I have a school of seven in my 125 gal tank, I have had them for at least 5 years and they are about 4 1/2" + in length. One of the sharks coloration has changed recently, all of the color is the same except the area above the redline that goes through the eye on the head this area which I am calling his cap is turning a greenish blue color. Have you ever heard if this, only one of mine has this new coloration.
Hello Beau,
I wish I could help, but I have never seen that. When the fish are young they do not have the roseline. When they are stressed, they line can diminish in brightness or seem to disappear, but I have never seen just the area you describe changing independently of the rest of the line. I sincerely hope nothing is wrong. Perhaps someone else will read this and be able to help you better than I can.
Best,
Dan
It was not the line it was the area above the line and it does not appear to be a health issue as all its color is good and it is very active. It is just the area has a greenish blue iridescence that none of my other do, I was talking to a local fish store and they thought it might be a sex thing as in it is a male. Don't know will have to keep looking.
Did you end up finding an answer to this?
No I have not, and I have not had any luck getting a picture of him. A picture is worth a thousand words. When I do I will post it so you can see exactly what I am talking about.
Sounds good. They are so quick they are a difficult fish to photograph.
saya pesan 4 ekor
Do you know how they breed them in large quantities I'd love to get them started.
From what I hear, they use hormone stimulation similar to how they breed redtail sharks, rainbow sharks, etc. I don't know for sure if that is the case because I have never seen it done, but that is the word on the street.
Dans Fish what triggers breeding in the wild? monsoon season?
Thomas, I'm not sure. I read conflicting reports. Here is a scholarly report from a university on their breeding. However, they were induced with hormones. I've seen some vids of them breeding in aquariums...looks like they breed like your average barb. Hope this link is useful to you: www.academia.edu/13461969/CAPTIVE_BREEDING_AND_DEVELOPMENTAL_BIOLOGY_OF_SAHYADRIA_DENISONII_DAY_1865_CYPRINIDAE_AN_ENDANGERED_FISH_OF_THE_WESTERN_GHATS_INDIA
How can you tell male from female?
I want one
:)
What Cory is that with the barbs?
Howdy Zelph,
Those are skunk corys: dansfish.com/products/corydoras-arcuatus-6-pack
Would love to know how one breeds these? all the info i can find just says that mainstream breeders use "hormones"
Howdy Daniel,
That's about what I find when I research them as well. I have heard of some edge cases of hobbiests breeding them, but it is basically stories of fry appearing occasionally in a planted tank with the adults. I don't find anything about purposefully breeding them.
Yeah that’s what I found too, and nothing else that people can say oh I did this that caused them to spawn...such beautiful fish though
Well, if you have luck breeding them, please do share.
I have 16 Roseline barb in 200l fish tank
Wow, that's a lot of fire in a tank! I bet it looks spectacular.
Where can I buy some from you?
kennyson, all my stuff is here: getgills.com/store.product/Dans_Fish
However, I don't have any roseline's at the moment.
Lucky I brought these fish my local store for $7 each
Nice...great deal!
Wow they are $60 each Australian here. Beautiful fish but can’t justify getting some especially as I’ll need 6 or more.
are they available for me to buy?
Sure are. Here's a link to my website where you can purchase them: dansfish.com/products/roseline-barb
i changed my mind, i’m getting the white cheek goby instead... can they go with discus?
I wish I could say yes but, unfortunately, I don't think the gobies would mix well with discus. White Cheeks definitely don't like high temps. Also, they are small enough Discus would probably chow down on them. That's my 2 cents.
that sucks... i have another tank with cory’s, tetras and SAEs. i’m sure gobys will be fine with them?
Yes, that might work. Just keep in mind that the gobies are slower to the food than tetras and that they like frozen and live foods, and I think you may be okay.
sub trops 65-79f in natural habitat
Yep, I think they like it cooler. It always surprises me when I see them at discus temps.
This is indian fish kerala
I’m not even gonna lie I have 1 Rosaline shark in a 30 gallon hex tall tank and mine is VERY healthy active well colored eats well and very confident he’s in with 3 Opaline gouramis 3 arulius barbs 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Glad he is happy in your setup.
I only have 2... oops
If it is working for you, then no problem. However, if you are having aggression issues, a group often helps.
