Aside from the year he spent in the WWF, he worked consistently for the same promotion through all of its evolutions (JCP/NWA/WCW) for almost 20 years. Seems like his true talent was severely overlooked by everybody.

Why WWF or WWE nowadays is going strong is because Vince Mcmahon is in control of his organization and understands what it takes to manage talent like him or not no one can come close Vince in wrestling because his knowledge and how he operates is beyond anyone in Wrestling

Tony was a natural, he also had a style to his voice which made the shows he called sound more sport oriented, somewhat legitimate. That's what I really enjoyed about WCW; Tony's ability to make it real and his reference to wrestling being a 'sport'.

If you're my age (38) & you grew up watching the "Monday Night Wars" like myself and so many others, along with Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Bobby Heenan, Tony Shivonne was in many aspects the "soundtrack" to our childhood. I don't recall (to steal a quote from Eric Bishoff) ever hearing/seeing Tony cut a promo, he was the play by play guy, not a character. Is this 10 min clip is any indication then I would have to say that Tony not ever having an on-air character was one more mistake to add to the thousands of missed opportunities & mistakes that lead to the downfall of WCW. Schiavone played dirty, and seemed to enjoy doing so. He was very disrespectful in not allowing Bobby Heenan time to say a few words to acknowledge the passing of Gorilla Monsoon, a legend in the business, simply because Monsoon was associated with the competition. Classless moves. He was also the man behind putting the world title on David Arquette; It was his idea. His antics didn't go unnoticed either. It was no surprise that after WCW was bought, Schiavone was out of a job, and off to the middle of nowhere calling little league games. It's just my opinion. Granted, there is no one without the other, but back to the fan in this video, TNA wasn't all about storylines in the slightest in its early days. I also disagree about WWE, I mean it's not the greatest it's ever been, but look at the guys who are getting pushed right now - AJ Styles isn't the best promo cutter, but he's the WWE Champ because he's popular and an excellent worker. Roman Reigns is always getting pushed for reasons unknown, because he's an average worker and a shitty promo cutter. Brock hardly speaks at all.
Mike Tenay was like the Matt Striker of WCW. He knew more about the business than any other commentator but because of politics kinda was just the 3rd man in commentary who barely got any speaking time except for when he was on the B show (Thunder) and Striker(smackdown)

For close to a decade before WWE bought it WCW was on the rocks. Every time a change a Turner happened it was on the chopping block. The sell to AOL was the last chapter. Russo putting the strap on an actor was just the nail that sealed the coffin.

I watched him week after week since 1983! Tony was the voice of NWA, WCW programming. Him, Ross, The Crocketts & Solie.
This was actually really good, Tony could be a heel. I wish he would have stayed in TNA, I'm sure he would have made it to the announcers booth. But glad to see him back in AEW!

Oh, you mean Tony "Belly to Back Suplex" Schiavone? You'd think after the 846th time, he'd know how to call a "back suplex" as opposed to a "belly to back." Nope, Tony was horrible for the most part. Seldom called a good PPV. When you can't tell the difference between the most common moves and you're a wrestling announcer, especially working for what was at a time, the number one wrestling company in the world in terms of popularity (WCW), you're in trouble.

Tony Schiavone, Paul Bearer, and Mike Tenay are all great IMO. Tony surprised me, man. After wearing a suit in WCW and being the good guy who just did his job, he comes out with a new beard, a KISS shirt, and a bad attitude. I miss WCW, man. I want Tony back too. Zombies Ate My Pizza! Not like promos and storylines make wrestling the whole. Everything should be balanced. Which is why WWE is utterly shit now. Shit talkers get pushed far more than actual worthy wrestlers just for the sake of talkin. Promos are really startin to be overrated
Granted, there is no one without the other, but back to the fan in this video, TNA wasn't all about storylines in the slightest in its early days. I also disagree about WWE, I mean it's not the greatest it's ever been, but look at the guys who are getting pushed right now - AJ Styles isn't the best promo cutter, but he's the WWE Champ because he's popular and an excellent worker. Roman Reigns is always getting pushed for reasons unknown, because he's an average worker and a shitty promo cutter. Brock hardly speaks at all.
Mike Tenay was like the Matt Striker of WCW.
He knew more about the business than any other commentator but because of politics kinda was just the 3rd man in commentary who barely got any speaking time except for when he was on the B show (Thunder) and Striker(smackdown)

Ok, this was a while before I started watching TNA. Never would've thought Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay could go at it like that (and I remember them from their WCW days, and, yeah, the way they talked about Russo was probably only partly a work lol)
For decades, Tony was the epitome of class and professionalism among wrestling announcers. This side of Schiavone (complete with KISS t-shirt) absolutely SHOCKED me!

For close to a decade before WWE bought it WCW was on the rocks. Every time a change a Turner happened it was on the chopping block. The sell to AOL was the last chapter. Russo putting the strap on an actor was just the nail that sealed the coffin.
