Im in the process of restoring a 1980 gmc 350 small block sm465. It runs and shifts as smooth as yours looks like it does. Good job on shifting young man you have the revs and speed down pat to allow for smooth gear shifting.
I miss my dads truck like this. When trucks were trucks and the working man was able to afford them, all you got now are rich fake cowboys making 200,000 a year as a engineer who are buying these trucks now for 100,000.
Well I always drove a pickup truck because I needed them for work, didn't do it to be cool didn't do it to make a statement I just needed a truck, now I'm almost embarrassed to drive one because all the fucking idiots that want to try to be cool, go buy a fucking Prius you bunch of shit heads leave the truck to the working man and quit driving the prices up so we can't fucking well afford it
Fair warning tha saginaw transmissions are not very durable. The saginaw was put behind chevy v6 and inline 6 motors, its easy to blow them up with a 300hp v8.
How hard is that thing to shift in traffic it's been awhile since I've driven a manual and I'm looking at a square with an sm465 in it and what gear do you Start off in 1st or second?
2nd gear in the sm465 is about the same as 1st in a regular 4 or 5 speed so it's no problem at all to take off. Really 1st is only good if the truck is loaded down, pulling a trailer or if I wanna crawl around real slow. I'm not all that familiar with how those old fords are geared but I'd say it's very similar. If it doesn't like taking off in 2nd it may just be becauae it has pretty high rearend gears. In which case you would just have to deal with the aggravation of taking off in granny low all the time unfortunately.
@ThetreeDraggon No it's a single rear wheel on this one with a regular bed. The 454/400 truck I drove in a different video was a dually and it had a flat bed on it
@CrazyWoody1989 that's awesome! dude. Even though the single rear wheels probably do better on mileage, I personally would probably go for the dually long bed so that I could haul little more weight in the back of it. Like we normally would use it if not for hauling a ton of animal feed for our ranch, we would use it for hauling a bale or two of bedding hay in the back of it every now and then, or for towing our 8000 pound travel trailer with, so i would probably slap some tow mirrors on it too. 👍 ❤️
@ThetreeDraggon When I put the truck together I took a leaf or two out of both the rear spring packs to soften/level it some and even after that we've hauled 3500 or 4000 lbs of dirt in the bed and my car trailer almost never gets unhooked off from it lol. You can really load them down
@CrazyWoody1989 yeah I heard they where beast. 4000 lbs in the back without springs or dual wheels though? that's insane! That's like the weight of our tractor without the loader or backhoe on it. 😂👍
@ThetreeDraggon It squatted it pretty good but it didn't bottom out the over load springs surprisingly. Felt about the same as pulling a loaded trailer as far as how well it would take off and pull lol
Yeah it drives and rides pretty nice! It's kinda harsh over bigger bumps and pot holes just because of the stiff springs but even that isn't terrible. It rides real nice with a load of wood on it or a loaded trailer hooked up 😂
It *might* get 13 mpg on the highway unloaded 😂 Which of course is a huge, huge reason why I don't drive it much unless I need to use it to haul something or pull a trailer.
@@CrazyWoody1989 no problem I will be running basically the same truck making a Frankenstein of sorts I have a 1985 Chevy c30 chassis cab frame and I'll be taking the bed and cab off my 86 c10 to put on that frame and will have a Chevy 350 w the sm465 I believe the rear end is 4:56 gears cause the chassis used to have a dump body on it ... @@justinsmith847 For sure! Unless you're running big tires you might even go higher than that unless you plan on towing with it a lot. Mine has 4.10s in it and it's just about right with 285/75s but definitely isnt doing 85 down the interstate lol. When this video was shot it had a huge set of 36 inch old style buckshots on the rear and even with them it was no problem to take off in 2nd gear
@@justinsmith847 Yeah 4.56s are for when you wanna haul like 10 tons lol. I pretty well knew I'd mostly only ever be using mine to tow a car trailer and I regularly use it to haul my Gambler 500 van around and it does just fine with the current setup.
@@CrazyWoody1989 how about 60-65mph on the highway is it screaming bad “just got basically the same truck with the same trans” motors having issues but close to fine tuning
@@Duramaximus It's not too terrible. The truck had some gigantic 315/85R16s on the back at the time of the video. I've since put new 285/75s on it all the way around and according to my math it'll do 70-75 at about 3000 rpm with the 4.10 axle gears
@@martindiaz3035 The only time I've ever done one in it was on its maiden voyage and that was only because it was too easy to pass up because it didn't have a bed on it at the time 😂 but I'm sure it would still lol

Yup todays “men” are buying these 2025 silverados and acting like pony humpers
So after all the years of Frankentruck being gone, we meet one of his close brothers!
OLD CHEVY IS MY BABY 😍. SMOOTH RIDE
I converted my 3 on the tree to a four speed called a three ring Saginaw. Now I actuate reverse with a cable.
I've been threatening to do that with one of those early 80s NP440 overdrive 4 speeds but they are hard to find.

Got to love the sm465
Nice rig!
Very nice bro ❤
Cool video!! I have 77 c20 same gears right laners all the way haha
For sure! I just towed my trailer about 150 miles in mine and it was a long trip lol
Getting ready for a 7 hour trip in mind right lane all the way haha
I bet it rode better with a load in behind it !!
@@OleonG It definitely did! Lol

I love it!!

How hard is that thing to shift in traffic it's been awhile since I've driven a manual and I'm looking at a square with an sm465 in it and what gear do you Start off in 1st or second?
It's not too bad to shift, and I almost always take off in second gear unless I'm pulling a trailer.
Nice thing about the transmissions with a low first is that you can idle along in slow moving traffic!
How do you start off on second with minimum slippage? I have an 86 f150, 1st is very low for climbing. Any tips?

Tip : scrap the ford and buy a square body.
What kind of carb does it have?
It has a Holley 600
Wow they look different compared to the 67-72 generation
They are quite a bit different (cheaper) than the 67-72 models but I still love them lol
Un excelente camión ah qué velocidad irá
Io más rápido que he ido fue 80 mph

Just bought a 78 c30 350 4speed 4wd dually from a fire department.
Could use someone that knows this truck to share some info.
Sounds like you got a pretty sweet truck!
What motor does this truck have?
It has an early 70s model 2 bolt main 350 with some 80s 882 heads, so nothing to write home about lol but a good running engine.
How many miles can you get on a tank?
I don't even know lol, I'm not even sure how much it holds because I've never filled it all the way up
Thease are geared so low. First 2 gears walk. I have a 1984 3500
What are rpms at?
I'm not sure, there's no tach, but I'd guess around 2000 at 50-55 mph

Some sort of vinyl, not original to the truck but pretty neat looking. The sun visors and headliner have been made to match lol

You mean the door hinges and all that? Normally we do oil those. If not people just put wd40 on them.
