✅ Get the 2022 Figure Skating Planning & Goal Setting Guide: coach-aimee.teachable.com/p/figure-skating-planner-2022
For anyone that has ever wondered what the difference is between Edea Ice Fly and Piano, I did a thing the other day: I accidentally brought one of each to the rink and fortunately I had a right and left skate because otherwise I would have had to coach in rental skates! I made a video about the difference between Edea Piano and Ice Fly: ua-cam.com/video/p6axdX42--E/v-deo.html I've also added a brand new shopping feature to my website with skate suggestions. Check it out here: skatewithaimee.com/purchasing-figure-skates

Wow thank you so much for showing your sole. I’ve been skating for 9 months and felt like I was struggling a lot with spins and my heel slipping. I got fitted for my skates by a “professional” so I trusted that they sized me right but I took the sole out and placed my foot at the heel and there is almost an inch of space above my toes and my feet are definitely wider as well. I’m so annoyed that they didn’t fit me properly but explains the issues I’ve been having. Will definitely be getting a new pair ASAP. Thanks for posting this!

Hi Aimée! I’m almost 13 5’ 0” and 112 pounds and I’m currently in an Edea overture in a 255 and I wear a US 7 shoe and I have not yet landed my axel and work more on turns but would like to get into jumps more. I really don’t like resport because of how they feel on my feet either. My mom thinks that I should stay in the overture because I don’t break down skates very easily because I don’t skate that hard, and because we like to stay cheaper, but I keep hurting my ankles and I feel I should be in a stiffer boot. My technician says it’s fine either way if I stay on the overture or move up to a stiffer skate. But I’m trying to figure this out with my mom. One of my friends (not a professional but knows more then me) thinks that I should at least be in the chorus. I have very wide feet but a narrow heel as well and medium toes. I know this is online and you can’t like completely fit me, but what do you think I should do?

    •  2 роки тому +6

From what you wrote, it sounds as if the Overture is ok for you. But, if you are looking to move up, you can do so with Edea without fear of overbooting. You really cannot overboot in Edea. You should be ok in the Chorus or Concerto if your budget allows.

I’m 155cm and 65kg and a 6D on Jackson elles. They’ve lasted me a good 5 years (and counting) and they’re great for anyone with flat feet. I would like to try edea’s but they’re hard to get in Australia. I guess I’ll just get a Jackson debut for me next pair. Btw I am learning jumps and spins, and I can land a flip and a loop maybe half of the time 😂

I found your channel a few months ago when I was thinking about getting into skating. I know how to ice skate at the bare minimum being able to go to public sessions with family and friends during the winter but I recently wanted to get into actual skating as a skill. I am 23 but 4’10” around 90 lbs so watching your recommendation video I didn’t really know where I fell because I’m the size of a child but fully grown haha! I started basic 1 (I see myself stopping at pre free skate) adult group lessons, at Chelsea Piers, last month and I’ve been in rental skates until today. I just purchased Jackson ultima artiste size 3 and was fitted and had skates molded at a reputable skate shop, Westside skate shop in LIC. I still have the receipt and a return policy and so I’m excited to hear your opinion and try them out next class on Monday! Thanks for the videos!

I'm an adult skater 124lbs 5'3 in height and I wear Jackson Ultima evo skates. I have foot issues such as bunions and my feet are very narrow and flat. The Evo skate is very cushion and provides great support compared to the Jackson mystiques. I started out when I was 13/12ish my first pair was the Jackson soft tec w. laces and I loved those! As my foot changed with the bunions I was unable to use those sadly but I'm very happy to use the Evo! hope this helps anyone who is in the market for some skates!

I can just barely do a single loop as my most difficult move, but otherwise I mostly do scratch spins and waltz jumps/toe loops. What would you suggest?

What Jackson would you recommend for an Adult Skater, weight 130-180, Was a competitive skater but now getting back on the ice 20 years later. I want to do all single jumps, spins. I use to have Custom skates with a razor edge toe pick, like an MK or Eclipse. But I want to stay with Jacksons because that's the only skater retailer around me.

    •  4 роки тому +3

Boots are much different today than then were 20 years ago! I took a break that was slightly longer and it took me several tries to find the right boot for me! The key was finding the right fitter/tech that knew their stuff? So, I would really recommend that you get fitted a skate shop by a tech that knows their stuff! What area do you live in? By razor edge, do you mean a cross-cut pick or straight cut? MK and Eclipse have many different profiles that are based off of John Willson Blades profiles. But there are many different kinds! Do you know what you had previously? Have you tested? If so, what levels have you passed? If not, do you know what moves or freestyle levels you've been working on?

Hello! What would you recommend for a 13 year old, 5'1 and about 105 pounds? I can glide with one foot off the ice but that's pretty much the only "fancy" thing I can do. Hi! I'm and adult skater on the chubbier side, I'm actually skating to get fit and I'd really like to know what you think. I'm 160 cm tall and around 200lbs. I'm working on basic 3 skills now. When I first started out I was put in jackson mystiques which I realize was probably a mistake. Funny enough, at first I thought they were really stiff but now that I'm used to wearing skates they're not stiff enough, to the point that I've never skated on my outside edges because I'm scared they won't support me. I'm thinking about getting jackson elles but I'm tempted to get the jackson freestyle skates but I'm worried they might be too stiff for my skill level. I know for sure I want to stick to jackson because they fit best and I've already figured out my size in them too. Would you recommend the elles or the freestyle?

    •  3 роки тому +3

Question: Did you have the the Mystiques heat molded? Asking because to me, all Jacksons feel really stiff, but my tech says that once they are heat molded they soften up! So, if the Freestyles are properly fitted and molded for you, you should be able to break them in. Remember, these skates are rated for skaters under 40 lbs, 40-80 lbs, and over 80 pounds. Because most adult skaters are much heavier than that, you have to consider that in your selection. If I were in your position, and planned on skating for a long time, I would look into a skate that would carry me as long as possible - considering my budget. Talk to your coach and find a skate tech that understands how to fit adults - ask them what they recommend. If that skate is out of your budget, ask them what the next best thing is. But, this is an investment in your skating - so if you can afford to purchase higher level boots and blades separately that may provide you with a better experience! I got my Edea Ice Fly when I was relearning everything after an injury and not even able to walk properly yet! Yes, they were expensive (especially with the John Wilson Gold Seal Blades), but it was the best investment that I made in my skating!

    • @ft7037
      @ft7037 3 роки тому +4

@ Thank you for replying so quickly!! Yes, I did get them heat molded, twice actually because the arches were a bit narrow for me, but I later found out that only the boots from their fusion series are meant to be molded. It did help out though. I guess compared to edea or other brands they're still stiff but I personally like that. I find that the stiffness that people complain about is more on the tongue and the front of the boot and not so much the sides. My mystiques are still comfortably stiff in the tongue area, but they're lacking in lateral ankle support. I'm not sure if that makes sense 😅

    •  3 роки тому +4

Everyone likes different things! Mystiques are not very supportive so it does make sense that they are lacking in ankle support. Look into Freestyles, or if you can swing it the Debut, Premiere, or try on the new Elite Pro (they're warm if you have issues with being cold) with John Wilson Coronation Ace blades. I think you'll find that you'll progress faster with a more appropriate boot.

  • @himeraji
    @himeraji 3 роки тому +15

Your video was really helpful, thank you. I started with the Jackson mystiques but they were rental skates so now I'm looking for my own pair ( I am a young adult figure skater ^^) . Do you know why most part of coaches don't recommend edea for beginners? (I know they have entry levels too) I mean they won't tell you: "don't buy an edea pair of skate" but they will say: "You should try this or that model of Jackson or Riedell"

    •  3 роки тому +10

IMO - Most coaches are more familiar with traditional skates like Jackson and Reidell. And honestly, although Edea does have entry level skates, I wouldn't recommend them for adults because adults keep their skates much longer than kids do! If you are looking at Edea as an adult, I would recommend not going lower than Overture (with a Coronation Ace blade) because of the support it offers. Adults are heavier and taller, and typically keep their skates for longer - Overture and Ice Flys will service you much longer! But, just make sure you have someone local that can shape them - look for an authorized dealer. Because they cannot be punched out the same way that traditional skates are. They can also not be "baked" or heat molded the same way that traditional skates can be. Unfortunately, many techs do not know this and don't have the correct equipment to do it properly. You can send them to Skates US for molding though - that is the US Importer and that's what I did until Greg became authorized to work on Edeas in my area.

Hi Aimee! I am In a rather unique position so maybe you can help with this... I have been Rollerskating, jam skating (dancing on skates) and playing roller derby for years. So, I am an advanced skater and used to using my edges on roller skates. I have hockey ice skates now and after my very first hour on the ice i found that i could execute many of the moves I use on the roller rink. I want to buy figure skates but am unsure of what to get because I already have a lot the the strength and stability of an advanced skater but am technically a beginner on the ice. My question is this… If I get a beginner, friendly ice skate, will it hold me back? I really don't have a huge budget so beginner skates are probably going to be my best but I just wanna make sure I'm not shooting myself in the foot here. Thank you so much for your help! This video was extremely informative! Also, I'm 5'4" 135 and extremely fit.

    •  2 роки тому +3

You may find a stronger learning curve with figure skates because the blade is longer especially in the tail - that may take more of an adjustment going from quad roller skates and hockey skates. I would look to get a figure skating boot that is similar to what you wear for roller. It's best to visit a trusted tech in your area. Ask at your rink where the best place to go is.

How many levels will the Jackson Freestyle Fusion skates last? I know it says through preliminary on all the education sites, but I figured you would have a little more insight.

    •  3 роки тому +3

Jackson Freestyles are rated 40/45 offering only "moderate" support. There really isn't an easy answer because it depends on a number of factors, including: the skaters age, weight, height and size. How many times a week do you skate and for what level of skating. How hard are you on your boots and blades.

Some brands have a skate that they call "freestyle." It's just a model of skate. However, as far as types of skates there are just recreational skates, figure skates, hockey skates, and speed skates. Beginner skaters can use figure skates, but it's important not to overboot! Hey, I'm currently in group lessons and working on my salchow and got my waltz and toeloop down. I've only skated for the first time 7 months ago and for reference I'm 5'2, 125lbs and 16yrs old. I am getting professionally fitted by a skate tech soon but I don't really have a coach to go to so I just kind of want to know your opinion. I'm currently skating in Jackson Finesse and I know it's time for an upgrade because death creases are showing up and my soles really hurt when landing bc my skates aren't for my level. I wasn't expecting to progress this fast. I got my skates which were perfect for my level at the time thinking it would last me at least a year for learning the basics but its only been 7 months and now I need to upgrade and I was thinking of Edea chorus because that seems like the most popular choice for a skater around my level but I also heard about how even choruses, when skating so often can break down really easily and with the rate I'm progressing, I'm scared that I will outgrow the choruses fast too. The next skate above would be a concerto but that is a huge jump from my current Jackson Finesse. So I don't know. Should I go with choruses or concerto? Concertos might be too advance/stiff and ideally I get choruses but I don't want to have to replace my choruses within a year due to it breaking down or me progressing too fast.

    •  6 місяців тому +1

If Edea skates are properly fitted and maintained -> meaning you were fitted for the appropriate skate for your skating level and where you want to progress, have them shaped for your foot by an Edea-certified dealer, store them correctly, tie them the Edea way, and replace the laces each time you get your skates sharpened, Edea skates can last for quite a long time! The biggest reason that people say Edea doesn't last long is that they are incorrectly sized, tied, and never change their laces. You cannot compare Jackson's support to Edea's, as they differ entirely. The technology in Edea provides lateral support, so the support level does not impact your ability to bend your knees and ankles. The best thing to do is to discuss it with your group lesson instructor, the group lesson skating director, and your skate tech. They can provide you with more specific information for you and your skating. I also have a video about skates for teens here: ua-cam.com/video/DB0hlPMYkbg/v-deo.html and more videos that explain what you need to know about Edea here: ua-cam.com/play/PLhIvo-BmGcaU91rtAwdxyzWWFiWW_6QCc.html&si=CdfwkNNhwOnzWWsJ

Hi! Three days ago I just bought my first pair, the glacier Jackson’s 120. I’m 15 years old and 175cm tall, and 67kg. There wasn’t a skate technician, just the woman who works at the store, she said to try the skates on with thick woolen socks, and is the reason why I can fit my whole hand behind my leg when I un-do the laces. I now learned that that’s wrong from your video. Today the blade almost came of the skate completely. I’m guessing the glue wasn’t good enough. Tomorrow I’m getting the same ones for now, in the summer I’m going to buy my first proper pare that are meant for me. Could you please give any recommendations? Such as price and brand! Im around a size 6 in jackson’s skates but it was the only thing available to me, and honestly they’ve been working for me, but I do think i’d have a bit more control over my edge if I had a bit more support particularly around the ankle and toe box. do you have any tips for adding extra stability to boots or for filling out excess space?

    •  2 роки тому +3

You really can’t fill out excess space with anything but your foot! If the boot is too big, you need a smaller size. I would suggest going with a woman's size for a different brand of boot. You can always paint them black!

    •  Рік тому +2

It sounds like something may be wrong. There shouldn't be a long break in period with Edea as they are designed so that there is virtually no break in required. Were you fitted for them by an authorized professional tech? If your toes are getting numb, I'm concerned! Are you tying them correctly? I have a whole video about how to properly tie Edea skates here: ua-cam.com/video/t4EuFbwl6IU/v-deo.html If I were your coach, I would advise you to take them back to your shop and have them check the fit. If they fitted correctly, your authorized dealer can custom shape them for you. If everything is ok and they are custom shaped for you, then you can try Jackson Barefoot Bootie: ua-cam.com/users/shortsuXkr98fM-X4 Otherwise, I wear Nita Sports socks - they are thin as skates are intended to be worn with thin socks. I have been experiencing pain in my skates (pain in the ball area, wiggle room in the ankle), so I measured my feet and discovered that my feet are of uneven length - 238 mm and 245 mm. I am wearing 250 mm skates, width C. I am over 100 pounds. May I know whether you recommend to just pad the skates, get new stock skates or custom skates? The problem here is that there is no skate technician in my country - I don't really know who to go to to fix my skate problem.

    •  3 роки тому +2

Honestly, you have to be seen by someone in person to figure out the issue. And, if you have Jackson skates - they need to be heat molded to have the right about of stiffness that it is intended. If you have no skate tech in your country, where are you purchasing skates?

    •  5 місяців тому +1

It's really difficult for me to give you a recommendation through a comment. In fact, I did a whole video on skates for teens and adults. You can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/DB0hlPMYkbg/v-deo.html
Keep in mind that beginner skates for basic skills are usually not going to last you through your first jumps and spins. Depending on how often you skate, how quickly you progress, and *how* you skate, you could break down a beginning skate in a year or even less. Also, your foot shape could be factor in which skate is best for you.
Generally speaking, I've found that Jackson offers beginnng skaters with the best value. From what you describe, I would recommend that you ask for recommended skate shop from your coach or skating director and make an appointment for a fitting with a professional tech that can fit you, heat mold, and adjust the boot for you. I have teens and adults about your size that skate in Jackson EVO, Elle, and Freestyles. I have others that skate in Reidell Vega, Edea Chorus, and a variety of Risport models.

I have never followed a skating lesson but feel like I can skate pretty good(I can do all the crossovers, waltz jump, 3 turns) My goal is to be able to do some single jumps and basic spins. And I wanna start lessons next season. I was looking at the Jackson artiste, but another creator said that the pvc sole is not good for jumping. What boot would you recommend that is also not too expensive?(I’m 16, 154lbs, 5 foot 9, wide feet) Your videos are really helpful :]

    •  2 роки тому +2

The Artiste is intended only for skaters under 40 pounds to get through their single jumps. For adult sized people they will not be supportive enough. As always, I suggest that you visit a professional skate tech to make a specific recommendation for your age, body composition, level, and foot shape. It's also critical to go to a pro so that the boot can be heat molded - you cannot do that at home! If you don't know where to go, ask the skating director at the rink for a recommendation on where to go. Without knowing anything else about you, other what you posted, I would not suggest that you look into anything under the Jackson Elle or Jackson Freestyle, if you want to stick with Jackson. But, a pro tech can make a better recommendation once they fit you.

I know that in a a few months/years time I will start to learn more complicated things... so what would you recommend when I start getting into doubles (jumps) and more complicated spins etc?

    •  3 роки тому

Skaters that are at an adult height/weight and working on Axels and double jumps, are at a point where you'll need to purchase your boots and blades separately. I highly recommend that you visit a good skate shop with a tech that is authorized to work with many different brands so that they can determine what is best for you. Speak with your coach or the rink's skating director and get a recommendation of where to go. They may even give you suggestions of which boots/blades to try on. Boots that.I suggest to my skaters at this level are Jackson Premiere Fusion, Edea Concerto and Ice Fly, Riedell Bronze/Silver Star or Elara, and Risport also has several options. For blades, consider John Wilson Coronation Ace or if you can Pattern 99 or Gold Seal - Gold Seals are great for helping with spins because of the rocker! However, you will need to fitted so that you are purchasing the correct size and getting the right fit for your foot. Plus, many of these option need heat molding or shaping so please go to a good shop with an expert fitter!

I am looking to get my first pair of skates but am wondering if you have any suggestions. I do plan on going to a skate shop and getting them fitted but have watched loads of your videos and you seem very knowledgeable so just wanted your opinion beforehand.
I have looked online at things like the Jackson artists, Jackson freestyles, Edea overtures, Riedelle Diamonds, and Riedelle Emeralds but I’m just worried about either over booting or getting something that won’t last more than a few months.
I’m a student so can’t afford to get a pair now and then have to replace them in a few months when I start single jumps, but also I’m only at about skate UK level 4/5 now so don’t want to overboot myself.
    What would you recommend? x

    •  2 роки тому +1

I would suggest sticking with Jackson for the best value - the Jackson EVO or Freestyle will serve you the longest. If you have the money to swing Edea - that is a good option too! The Concerto will last a good amount time and you cannot overboot with Edea because all the flex is at the tongue. But, definitely get fitted and try them on! @ thankyou so much for your speedy reply!! I absolutely love all of the Edea boots but unfortunately too expensive for me.
      Are the Edea Overtures good?
Are the freestyles appropriate for a beginner adult skater as I’m just worried that they will be too stiff. Or for adults is that level of stiffness not an issue. Love the Evo’s as they seem like a more deluxe version of the artists although I can’t get them anywhere in the UK! The Evo is a 25 and the freestyles are a 45. Which would be better for a beginner Stater or does that difference not really matter too much. Or would something like an Elle at 35 be better.
Again sorry for asking all the questions. Just wanna make sure I get the right ones as this is a big purchase.

    •  2 роки тому +1

Overture is a good boot, but it may wear out quicker than Jackson for an adult size skater. AND, you have to buy your blades separately from the boot. So, may break your budget. As for the other questions, you really need to try them on because it depends on so much! For strong skaters, the Freestyle will not be too much, but it honestly depends. An Elle may be ok, but it will not last as long. In addition, your foot shape can play a big role is what a skate tech will recommend for you. It's entirely possible that Jackson may not be right for you! You really need to ask these questions to your coach and skate tech. On top of that, we have supply chain issues with actually getting skates right now. So, you may have to settle for what is in-stock.

I have a question! I've been doing a lot of research on what would be the right skate for me, but haven't really gotten a clear answer yet. What about for someone who is kind of just starting out, but their goal is to learn a triple axle? Coming from the beginning but with big goals, what would be the right skate to learn on and grow with? The skate is for me, I am an adult, so I am no longer physically growing 😊

    •  2 роки тому +2

It’s not likely that the same boot and blade will last anyone from the beginner stages to their triple axel! Ask your coach what they suggest and where you should go to get fitted by a pro tech.

Hii I'm 18, 5'7 and 125 lbs n just started skating. I'm pretty serious tho and am planning to skate 4 times a week (roughly 13 hours) with group lessons. I was thinking of getting jackson premieres but I'm not sure if it would be too advanced. If so I'll get freestyles but I just dont want to get new ones after a year I wanna use them for at least 2 years which would you recommend?

    •  3 роки тому +2

Jackson Premiere is rated for up double jumps for skaters above 115 lbs. They are around $400 for the boot only - you would need to purchase your blade separate. That may be too advanced for a skater that just is beginning. I highly recommend that you go to a reputable skate shop and get fitting by an expert! Ask the group instructor or skating director for a recommendation of where to go.

Hi!! I had a question. I went to the skate shop a couple days ago and the person fitting the skates told me I should get the Jackson freestyles. But I’m now wondering if those will actually last me for a long time. I plan on doing jr. star skate (level 1-6 in Canada) and I need them to last me since I can’t afford another new pair. These are also the first pair of skates I’ve ever bought new. I weigh 114lbs and am 5’2, and I’m 15. I skate 2 times a week (classes) but go skating for fun quite a bit (both indoor and outdoor rinks, I was also wondering to what extent outdoor rinks hurt the skate blades?) I also learn skills really quickly, and usually try more advanced things than the level I’m on. do you think the person who helped me at the store sold me the right skates? I’m so so sorry for this super long message! I also loved the video

    • @sofiatrujillo2623
      @sofiatrujillo2623 3 роки тому +1

Adding more to this already long message: I was using a pair of ice flys with matrix supreme blades for a year, I was only in level 1 supposed to be doing salchows but learned all my jumps including the flip and almost lutz (all supervised in class but just for fun) I LOVED the edeas but grew out of them. That’s why I bought new ones. The toe pick on the matrix blade too, the best thing that ever happened to me.

    •  3 роки тому +2

If you were in Ice Flys before, I would stick with Edea! Jackson’s are completely different and there will be a steep learning curve!

Just remember that anytime any skater gets new skates - even if they are the exact same make and model they had before it does take some adjusting and sometimes (depending on the kind of skates) there is a break-in period. Hi Aimee, I recently got measured & fitted for Edea Ice Fly’s, my feet measure out to be 280cm. The boot technician thought it would be a good idea to order 290c’s because my feet are wide. When I put my feet on the sole, there was a bit of room between my toe & the end of the sole.
A 285 in Edea Ice Fly is unavailable right now. Do you think the 290 will impact my skating?

    •  2 роки тому +1

The skate tech should be measuring in mm for a more precise fit. If your feet are wide, there are different options for width as well. Edea's come in B, C, D, etc... The skate tech should have also measured your width, also in mm. Edea provides charts to authorized dealers that show which size (length and width) are appropriate for a skaters measurements. If you are unhappy, go back to the tech and let them know. Edea skates can also be shaped by hand, using a high powered hair dryer and tools (not in a skate oven). Authorized Edea dealers are trained on how to do this.

    •  3 роки тому +1

Have you watched my other video? Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/Byqm0R5yo7o/v-deo.html Jackson Mystiques are not very supportive. However, they would be ok for a smaller skater that is just beginning. As you weigh more than 100 lbs, you should look at other options. The rink may not be the best place to go for a fitting. Definitely ask the skating director or a coach where to go! If you are looking at Jackson, it is reasonable that a starter pair should cost an adult sized person at least $180 - $270 USD. BUT, you cannot get fitted correctly at a shop, and then buy on Amazon as every model will fit differently. Plus, most Jackson skates perform best when they are heat molded and you cannot do that at home. Also, they will need to sharpened (they don't come sharpened) and many professional techs will include heat molding and your first sharpening with the purchase! Sharpening figure skates runs $20-40 each time. So, definitely ask where the best place to go is!

She competes and doing single rotation jumps and will likely start axel in a few months. Currently she is in the Jackson Mystique which from everything I read is not advanced enough for her level. When I asked her coach she said to stick with them (not sure if her tiny stature plays a part in that and the fact that it may be harder for her to break in skates). She said at most move up to artiste - but will that give her enough support for axel and doubles after? Not a figure skater so this is all new
