  • Watch out, loud first few seconds! Can you electroplate "Nikasil" Nickel/Silicon Carbide at home? Sure! In this video I take you through my process. I've got a few earlier videos on the topic too, with more thorough explanation:

This is the road to the most powerful two stroke (relative to cc) ever. Aiming for 30+hp from 50cc.
    Lofty goal!
    Here's a few key points:
    - 100% bore width single exhaust port, no bridges, non. This leads to unrivaled blowdown specific time area.
    - What should be excellent transfer duct geometry, large radius on inner walls to minimize flow separation, constant side wall angles for control, large duct volume for gentle "delivery"
    - Valveless tuned length intake with nitromethanol injection, aimed at the transfer inlets.
    - Ridiculous crankcase volume, no piston pumping here, it's all about resonance!
    - Tuned pipe, tuned crankcase, tuned intake, tuned everything, resonance!
To be able to run such an monstrosity of an exhaust port without instant catastrophic failure there's a special two-piece piston with a retained piston ring(thanks Mark Atkinson). It has no holes in the skirt either, no short circuiting between the transfers and the exhaust.
I've designed the whole thing from scratch.
3D printed, cast(lost PLA), and "Nikasil" plated the cylinder myself in my garage. Designed the case and pipe for it. I've received lots of help from the community with things I haven't been able to do myself(lack of machinery and/or skill)
Especially machining, until recently I didn't even own a lathe.
Thank you guys, you're the best!
I've designed and built a landspeed bike for the engine, plan is to set a new class record at Bonneville.
Thanks for following the adventure, and fear not, I've already got plans for the next project - Symmetric transfers, four exhaust ports, two rotary valves(but not where you think they'll be), forced induction, no need for expansion chamber(!) ++
Many years of two stroke madness up ahead!
    Easy is not worth anything!

Thanks to you our two stroke Master for sharing your work. A little question: the piston = classique one or new model new idea with no needle cage, no axe who aims on connecting rod? I think this could really be a revolution... Starting with the dilation. You should patent this piston project to sell it to the Japanese.
Good luck to you for the future. Can't wait to see you blasting the 2 stroke 50cc speed record!!!

As a chemist it is strange to watch someone dipping the ph paper into his solution. Dont do it like that, you will get the ph paper stuff into your solution and your ph reading isnt as accurate because you are wet soaking the paper. Use something like a glass rod to dip into your solution and put what ever stays on the rod onto the ph paper - much better way without contaminating your solution. Really liking the project though!

The audio clip of the kindergarten kids was the key, I would bet that the average overall resonance frequency of a 2 stroke engine would be pretty close if not darn near equal to that of the kindergarten audio clip. Electroless plating was discovered by accident by two engineers working on making cannons last longer. They forgot to turn the heater off at the end of the day and left it on overnight. The next morning they discovered the plating without using rectifiers. The hard part is recognizing that a mistake can be a whole new technology. Most people would clean up the mess and forget about it.

  • @Baigle1

Instead of a thin mil coating that might not offer full or robust coverage, I'll probably just buy the cylinders and use additive nano powders of BN, Graphene, and TiC (2D ceramic sheet MAXene materials). I'm thinking that any silicate dust, amorphous carbon deposits, or metal burrs that make their way into your cylinder region will be pretty hard on the soft supporting nickel matrix.
Instead of Nikasil, you could also look into ion beam deposition (form of PVD) of a bonding layer like AlTiN, with a thicker chemical vapor deposition layer of diamond-like carbon over top (all parts can be coated this way). I may make the cylinders out of Hastelloy C (low thermal conductivity + superalloy resistance) or a titanium alloy if I take this approach over Al2O3/TiCN/SiC/SiN/ZrN/CrN cylinders (wide variety of ceramics suitable).

IF that leak down tester is one of the cheaper ones on ebay and the likes, its junk, well, the regulator part is junk, it has so much hysteresis you cannot get a reliable and consistent reading to compare between cylinders. Im a mechnic for a living and bought one to replace a snap-on one I drove over .. ended up buying another snap on one. if you replace the regulator with a quality part, it should work as intended. Also a DIY vacuum leak tester is very easy to make with a variable power supply, gauge, and an automotive 12v vacuum pump(for brake servos) .. I use the latter to test valve and piston sealing with the head off. very handy for troubleshooting a dismantled engine. just found your channel today :)

👍 Nickel plating chemicals from Gateros Plating, SiC powder from ebay. Just like a normal Nickel plate but with the powder mixed in(needs a pump)

I don't remember if you said it in the last one but... you couldn't use wax to mask it? And btw when painting something, even for masking, give it a coat and let it sit till it gets tacky (sticky) to the touch then hit it with another coat and repeat until you get to the thickness you want. Just continuing to spray more paint on it while it's wet isn't going to do anything but make it run as the weight of the paint overcomes the grip on the part. Oh and btw I messed up on my comment about heating the nitric acid it doesn't make dinitrogen (I was thinking of dinitrogen tetroxide) it makes nitrogen dioxide when you warm it up too much and it makes that red/brown gas. It can also make nitrogen trioxide too. Either you need to figure out a way to fill those holes or a recast needs to happen. It might be down to the alloy you used to cast or the plaster casting, I don't know but those holes definitely need to go. I wonder if you could do plaster for the passageways and do a sand cast for the exterior or if that'd be too much work. I'd be tempted to fill it with copper like they do with chrome and then do the nickel over the copper once the holes are filled.

What would the consequences be if you increased the ampage in this plating process? Only reason I ask is..... If the resistance of your cylinder is unknown, how do you calculate ampage?
Thanks you for all your experimental work and your positive attitude towards failing. We all stand on shoulders of giants and you sir are a giant.
    Thank you again.

How about this: You build up the zinc for filling the holes, then hone it to shine, then start the process from the beginning. If the zinc layer is sufficient, You can even try to skip the zinc bath part. Just because Zinc is malluable, but Nikasil is not.
The final plating sufrace is not designed to be honed at all.

    • @oikkuoek
      @oikkuoek 3 роки тому

@@MeanOldBastardBikerBob Those pits can be used as anchor points for the galvanized zinc/Nikasil sleeve. No press sleeve needed. Nickel can easily penetrate several milliteres inside the zinc layer, so just rinse the bore, coat it heavily with zinc, hone it to proper diameter and shine, and harden the zinc with nickel.

I worked for a company years ago(1980s) that chrome plated their 2-stroke engines. (Plated, not Nikasil). A small percentage of porosity was acceptable and desirable to allow for some retention of oil on the cylinder walls. I agree that the pores observed in this cylinder appear to be too large though.
