Actually, the Alligator Farm was in the small town I grew up in. Buena Park, CA. It’s still there, but we moved there when it was just starting in 1956, and Walter Knott, with his boysenberries, great restaurant & an antique working train and a merry-go-round and an old western town moved to his lot, opened Knott’s Berry Farm across the street from the Alligator Farm, on Beach Blvd in Buena Park, CA! Knott’s Berry Farm was completely free except for refreshments, the rides and of course the restaurant! I met Colonel Saunders of fried chicken fame there in Ghost Town in Knott’s as a young lady, and he was so nice & just like his picture! I would wear old-time clothes my mom stitched by hand & sing in the childrens’ choir in the Little Church of Reflections by the lake in Knott’s back in the 1960s. I have very fond memories of Knott’s Berry Farm, Mr & Mrs Knott & all of the old Knott’s, before it was the giant place it is now, taking up a whole four-block area, and the Alligator Farm is long gone. But I love the memories…
What a beautifully detailed and personal recollection! Buena Park's history, especially with landmarks like the Alligator Farm and the early days of Knott's Berry Farm, sounds so charming. Walter Knott's vision and innovations, along with the free access and unique attractions, created a truly memorable experience for many. Meeting Colonel Sanders must have been an extraordinary moment as well! Your story paints a vivid picture of a nostalgic era, full of warmth and simpler joys. Thank you for sharing such a special piece of history!
I’m from Scotland, the women from early America were beautiful. The native Americans were so different and gorgeous in their traditional clothes. The women with the huge ear hair doughnuts were priceless, they looked amazing. Can you imagine how long it took to do those rolls?
Your moral superiority is duly noted, you're social brownie.Points will arrive in the mail in 6 to 8 weeks. You do know of course, that 25000 children starve to death every day, While you put fuel in your car it is made from corn. Hypocrite
I love old photos, but as much as I love seeing them, I get sad in thinking, if we as humans only had more companion for others what a beautiful world this could be - it's heartbreaking to see Gods children treating others with such disrespect & hate. 😔
Why were old growth red woods solid and healthy throughout back then? Seems to me the old growth red woods cut these day are rotten in the middle and have to be strapped so they dont splinter into kindling when they're fallen.
Yep. The difference in the health of old-growth redwoods from the past compared to those cut today likely comes down to environmental factors, age, and how these massive trees have been affected over time.
I heard of a new technology that you can take old photos that have house's with the doors and windows were open but you couldn't see inside what was going on. But now they can see what was hidden in the darkness of the rooms. And make out other people and objects that you couldn't before.
There seems to be a sad commentary thru out these photos of animals being abused. How sad that thru the years animals were used as sideshows. I guess leading to the bad zoos across the countries. Alligator pets, snake pets, racing piglets on a hot sand beach, boxing kangaroos on and on. Obviously animals welfare came way down the line...😔
Thankfully, awareness around animal rights has grown, and today, more emphasis is placed on ethical treatment, conservation, and the protection of wildlife.

They were truly stunning works of art, both in terms of craftsmanship and cultural significance. :)
They all look so sad…😔❤
Watching til the end.
Thanks you.
How they treated animals back then is disgusting!
It’s important to keep pushing for progress and awareness in how we treat all living beings.

If we could all embrace empathy and kindness, the world would truly be a better place. Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt thought.

That was car dealer Cal Worthington being pulled by the hippo.
I'm quite fascinated by that photo.
Poor Alice. She had brothers who suffered the same hypertrichosis and were in the carnivals.
Yeah. Hopefully, God blesses her.

Funny how you used to have to go to a carnival to be a tattooed, fat or bearded woman. Now, you just go to Walmart!
Times sure have changed-what was once a rarity is now just part of a typical shopping trip! 😂

oh. Thanks for shaaring. I’ll try to learn more about them.
Most were not strange nor bizzare but historical.
Drop the few at the beginning and give this collection a better title, maybe.
Thank you for pointing that out. We definitely need to improve this issue.
