+matthieuriolo how does goalies participating in field activities have anything to do with a field player playing goalie? I would disagree that most goalies come from field players. Maybe some come from defenders but not most
If your talking about the first one, it is American League so it doesn't matter who is in net, they are mostly absolutely shit. Apart from those who went over before retirement like tim Howard
no the keeper should. If that elbow wasnt on purpose then i dont know anymore. As a football player you have to have yourself under control. And why should the player be sent off?
Caden Dehoog Basically it was an exploit of an old MLS rule that has since been removed that allowed teams a fourth sub just for goalkeepers. New York used it to put an extra field player on (Gaven) and then he switched with Tim Howard at the first chance to be a field player while Howard went in goal. Once New York used this and actually scored a goal, the rule was changed, and rightfully so.
Basically in the metro Stars game, they are allowed a 4th sub for goalkeepers but they didn't want Tim Howard off, however needed to get Gaven on. So they switched another player with the Tim Howard and then switched that player momentarily for Gaven and then switched Howard and Gaven back, basically finding a loophole
As a Mexican that loves and plays this beautiful sport name Fútbol (Soccer) USA does something no other country in the world does, they train athletes not just a futbol player.
fiel player that plays keeper must have some type of goalkeeping training, im sure every coach has a emergency option, thats why most times they do well, they know what they are doing
seriously the mike magee case is completely ridiculous. He didn't elbow him in the face on purpose, the player went down with his head and the keeper tried to shield the ball from him. But the player definately has to get a yellow card, there is nothing you can deny about that.
You were allowed a fourth sub in mls back then to bring on a substitute goalkeeper. What happened was Tim Howard was moved into the midfield and the field player went in goal. Then Gavin was brought on as the goalkeeper sub and played in goal for about a minute. After this Howard went back into goal and Gavin was put back into the midfield. Basically they brought Gavin on as the goalkeeper sub without actually taking Tim out which was bullshit and that's why the rule got removed
+Giuseppe Lara well basically they used four subs for field players but the fourth sub was supposed to be reserved for a keeper. It's not bullshit I guess but I considered it to be. It's more of a loophole
as a kid back then, i watch a league game in england, 1st gk get injured, 2nd also injured & 3rd get a red card, so the defender has to fill that position, luckily that team won. it was a weird & hard game. i never imagine a team with 2 gk in the bench can run out of gk. lol
If you play goalie for a minor league (14-17) I recommend playing football or rugby for at least one year, it helps teach you to be more aggressive and makes you less scared of going up and competing for the ball. Playing football for 6 years for me really helped out when it came to being a goalie. It especially helps when you are challenging someone for a ball they'll panic and get scared but you'll be used to contact and just take it (trust me i've been in many of those situations)
goalkeepers try maximum ball to be stopped by hand and so some ball which is at high speed wgich could be easily stopped(considering their standards) by leg is gone into the net trying to save with hand. Many goalkeepers here if u guys noticed tried to stop the low balls withs legs and hence they made good saves. Sorry for my English.
This does happen. I experience this first-hand in high school soccer in Trinidad and Tobago . i was the reserve goalie on my team. for an important quarter final match, I was left out of the list of subs. Had to watch the game from the stands. My team went down 2-0 and pull the game back 2-2, until the goalie got sent off for allegedly handling the ball outside the box in the 88th minute . Imagine my horror watching as a defender had to put on the goalie jersey with no keepers on the bench. Two free kicks later, game was lost 4-2. To this day i have never forgiven my coach's decision. Interesting fact: the guy that did play goalie was the goal scorer for my team. In fact the very stadium that particular match was played is named after him. He died a couple years after injuring his spine in a collision with Landon Donovan in 2001 in the VERY SAME stadium (www.bigapplesoccer.com/us/mnt.php?article_id=19908)
Only in the mls do they not have backup keepers 😂 Reminds me of club football days when you didnt have a spare GK someone would volunteer and once every week or so they'd do the keepers training just so they werent completely hopeless in goals they were never as good as a proper GK tho.
calm down, you have to understand that we are forced to change the names of things to accomidate other sports. In this case, its baseball. We call the left fielder, center fielder and right fielder, "outfielders", so we change the name. Also field player is just a quicker way to say it whats the big deal?
Filmmaker bruh these are just some highlights, that doesn't mean every damn midfielder is a good goalkeeper. Most of the midfielders would suck dick as a goalkeeper, these are just some exception. Also don't forget this is MLS lmao
As a goalkeeper it is painful watching the outfielders struggle with simple things, i mean I can play a 60yard through ball, I can shoot perfectly, and tackle, etc, its not hard to do that, goalkeepers have a much harder job.
i knew for a fact that the eddie gaven metrostars situation would be in here lol. Glad we don't have that 'goalie only' substitution joke anymore after that loophole
antoine morfos MLS teams used to be allowed a 4th sub to bring on a goalkeeper. However they subbed Tim on as a field player and Eddie Gaven as a field player then Gaven jumped in goal and Howard played on the field for a minute and then jumped in goal. They essentially got 4 field player subs. They took advantage of the rule and that's why the MLS got rid of it. Hope this helps bro.
Right but that of course made Eddie the go-to option in 2010 when both of our keepers went out with injuries. He gave up a goal but had one save nominated fle save of the week. That was an awesome match to be at. I lived Eddie, so sad he had to retire early after being done so dirty in the Open Cup by a USL team.
I imagine the ref didn't see any of it actually happening. He was probably running up the pitch, ready for the keeper to send it long so he could observe the play from there. Then he noticed the ball hadn't been played, he looks over and there's a guy on the ground saying he's been elbowed.
that moment when the field player is a better goalie than the goalkeeper :)
+matthieuriolo how does goalies participating in field activities have anything to do with a field player playing goalie? I would disagree that most goalies come from field players. Maybe some come from defenders but not most
+Anthony Quintanilla i come from being a Left Wing and turned out being goalie
If your talking about the first one, it is American League so it doesn't matter who is in net, they are mostly absolutely shit. Apart from those who went over before retirement like tim Howard
+TinyRodent u wot
Tim Howard Gets red
Sub:Tim howard
And when Manuel Neuer tries to be a field player...
Better then messi or ronaldo
+Radu Adam at skill moves
+Radu Adam no at everything
+Michael Luechauer at skill moves;)
i thought he was...
all the other players were eehh, but Mike Magee, man, he was a beast! He let no goal in and the game scoreless in a rivalry game! BEST KEEPER AROUND!!
he let no shot in you mean lol
Gerard Toal Yes
Could not believe the second guy
1) not allowed to header the ball out the keepers hands??!!? Like WTF?!!!!
2) clear dive
Keeper has to have two hands on the ball. If hes only got one hand on the ball you can dispossess him.
@@mokkaveli No the goalkeeper is in possession when the ball is between one hand and another surface i.e his chest.
EØ learn the rules
Skill shot you are actually stupid you should be learning the rules lol
Rida Noor idiot
The second one is ridiculous. The keeper shouldn't have been sent off, the player should...
Agreed he just fell like a pussy thats football foryou
He did elbow him in the face it's not like he did nothing, he might have gone down easy but it was still a foul
+Leon Simpson-O'Regan He wanted to show that he is in posession of the Ball
+Leon Simpson-O'Regan Pepe would get a yellow card.....
no the keeper should. If that elbow wasnt on purpose then i dont know anymore. As a football player you have to have yourself under control. And why should the player be sent off?
And then there is Manuel Neuer.
Maliha Intikhab lmao
Maliha Intikhab Oliver kahn
Maliha Intikhab hahhahhahaa
the goalkeeper try to be the midfielder
Mike Magee was the best
Yep
Totally
Hell ya
truly unbelievable...
In wich min
Mike magee may as well pack his bags and head for real madrid
The whole Tim Howard/teenager thing was confusing...
Caden Dehoog Basically it was an exploit of an old MLS rule that has since been removed that allowed teams a fourth sub just for goalkeepers. That's hilariously American
That classic Galaxy moment when Magee stepped in and handled SJ, always makes me smile lol.
Am I the only one who thinks Toronto FC's new stadium renovations are freaking awesome
I live in toronto and i drive to my friends building all the time and see it from high up and jizz in my pants at it
Adam De Sousa what the hell?
Eddie Gaven. What a legend.
0:36 i get you're naturally a field player but you can use your hands lol
LOL muscle memory
He was gonna dive to his right, so he had to use his feet.
Christian Cole Its called "pre dive" its what many keepers use before a shot is taken.
Many goalkeepers are doing this now during the world cup
Basically in the metro Stars game, they are allowed a 4th sub for goalkeepers but they didn't want Tim Howard off, however needed to get Gaven on. So they switched another player with the Tim Howard and then switched that player momentarily for Gaven and then switched Howard and Gaven back, basically finding a loophole

Yellow for both and a free kick for the goalkeeper
0:25 That guy in red doesn't know the concept of respect to the outfield player goalie.
Can someone explain to me what happened during the metrostar game?
I was wondering also
You were allowed a fourth sub in mls back then to bring on a substitute goalkeeper. What happened was Tim Howard was moved into the midfield and the field player went in goal. The “Loophole”
Magee was a unit! Quality, great to watch! :D
I don't understand why it says "try". They did perfectly fine
Wow, they all did a pretty decent job. Well done!
I see some better goalkeeping here than I do in the world cup!
This Magee guy is better than most actual goalies
Its just mind blowing that field players do a goalkeeper's job, but good on them for taking on the keeper responsibility.
as a kid back then, i watch a league game in england, 1st gk get injured, 2nd also injured & 3rd get a red card, so the defender has to fill that position, luckily that team won. it was a weird & hard game. i never imagine a team with 2 gk in the bench can run out of gk. lol
I always rewatch the highlights from Magee's keeper game when I'm anxious.
Damn, Eddie Gaven looks so young! I just remember him with a beard.

'Field player' first you wanna call it soccer now this
Are you dumb?
Jonathan ortiz not really mate are you?
***** No are you? I'm messing around m8
Jonathan ortiz swear down m9?
kinda m10
I'm still amazed that Lenhart managed to get that call against Saunders.
Yeah he deserved a yellow but Saunders did elbow him straight in the head
I started playing keeper because i was a usless defense now Im a descent keeper.
By any chance can anyone explain what happened in the clip 1:45? I was confused for a bit
Eddie Gaven is good at keeper I guess
0:39 yoo 😂😂👌 man saved itt with thaa tackle.
goalkeepers try maximum ball to be stopped by hand and so some ball which is at high speed wgich could be easily stopped(considering their standards) by leg is gone into the net trying to save with hand. Many goalkeepers here if u guys noticed tried to stop the low balls withs legs and hence they made good saves.

Since when do managers forget to out a goalkeeper in the subs

saxman642 may happen in EUA
3rd sub already
In the case of Eddie Gaven the second time, in Columbus, our starting goalkeeper got injured and then the backup got injured too, in the same match.
The second one🤣😂👏that player will never try to steal ball again in his life... That slap though😝
Someone explain what happened with the gavin one
what was up with the Eddie Gaven thing?
Well, I've made rep teams as a centre striker, left wing, keeper, right defence, and centre mid.
3:09 he doesn't even have gloves 😂😂
and this is when the games become way more interesting.
To be honest anibaba should have came out to claim the ball but he did well with his feet to make the deflection
These field players did better than many goal keepers tbh.
The MLS... Why don't they do what everyone else does. If it's an injury, give them a free sub
Had to be in the MLS 🤦🏽♂️
best Video ever!
Legit true, midfielders got a good experience in defending. :)
Mike magee is amazing
Eddie Gaven, what a guy
That McGee guy is a legend
Can someone tell me wtf happened in the clip with Tim Howard
Do the mls not have back ups
Wow...keepers are quite aggressive in MLS.
theyre really doing good
take a look a Jan Koller for Burussia Dortmund! Best field player goalie ever
Why has this happened so often in the MLS?
Who else got this as a recommended?
Only in the mls do they not have backup keepers 😂 Reminds me of club football days when you didnt have a spare GK someone would volunteer and once every week or so they'd do the keepers training just so they werent completely hopeless in goals they were never as good as a proper GK tho.
They have backups this is situations where the backups are hurt or sent off
It's outfield player not field player!
calm down, you have to understand that we are forced to change the names of things to accomidate other sports. In this case, its baseball. James
Calm down. It’s not going to hurt you.
Metrostars! We miss you!
so cool!
ever wonder how messi would do
Magee was amazing
why was Tim Howard not playing as a GK in the first place? how's the story?
Mike McGee Is a legend
I feel like if a midfielder or anyone else plays as goalkeeper, they could do much better than a typical goalkeeper
Filmmaker uhh no
Joppe Reynaert have you watched this video?
Filmmaker bruh these are just some highlights, that doesn't mean every damn midfielder is a good goalkeeper. Most of the midfielders would suck dick as a goalkeeper, these are just some exception. Also don't forget this is MLS lmao
Even my sister can play goalie in the mls ! Idk what's so impressive
As a goalkeeper it is painful watching the outfielders struggle with simple things, i mean I can play a 60yard through ball, I can shoot perfectly, and tackle, etc, its not hard to do that, goalkeepers have a much harder job.
TJW 0405 r/iamverybadass
how about G. Buffon?
the moment manager realizes that the player is better goalkeeper than the offical goalkeeper
Why didn’t they just bring in another goalkeeper? Or was it their last?
Nice save from magee
MAGEE IS ON FIRE
Wait you guys don't have second goalkeepers in MLS?
Yes they do. But you can a have a situation where all the subs have already been used for example when you can no longer bring in that 2nd goalkeeper.
That guy @ 2:04 , looks exactly like Scott sterling .........
They need to make a review booth for flops
MLS is a joke
NYRB 4-2 Chelsea
not anymore with zlatan in it
THE G.O.A.T yet they are still better than you
TheEnchanted0ne theyre a joke again he's got a red card
It's not our fault
Mladen Petrić saved the penalty and won a point for his team.
Only in the MLS
i knew for a fact that the eddie gaven metrostars situation would be in here lol. Glad we don't have that 'goalie only' substitution joke anymore after that loophole
THE CCSC FAN I didn't get exactly what happened.
antoine morfos MLS teams used to be allowed a 4th sub to bring on a goalkeeper. That was an awesome match to be at. I lived Eddie, so sad he had to retire early after being done so dirty in the Open Cup by a USL team.
Isn't it considered to be a foul to mess with the ball when in the keepers hands?
This is funny..at same time feeling bad for team..
Mike magee was class
Scott Sterling at 2:03 minute.
goalkeeper equals support
Wheres scott sterling?
In the hospital
He made an appearance for Switzerland today in the World Cup.
Damn Magee really wasnt too bad
Vintage McGee
Wtf happened in the second clip? The player headed the ball out of the goalkeepers hands. He was the one supposed to be carded. Crazy.
I imagine the ref didn't see any of it actually happening. He was probably running up the pitch, ready for the keeper to send it long so he could observe the play from there. Then he noticed the ball hadn't been played, he looks over and there's a guy on the ground saying he's been elbowed.
Probably. But even if so, he gave in too easily then.
Tim Howard used to play outfield????
Lol Tim Howard went back into goal
Only happens in mls because any other team has a spare gk
Why is there thim howard playing?
Third metro stars players jerseys are two sizes to big.
Most of them ain’t that bad, i‘m no expert but do field players receive training as a goalkeeper?
I think sometimes there's one outfield player designated as a last resort keeper.
Only in MLS...
At this level I'm not surprised field player can be goalkeepers even shot was on the goalkeeper
there were several decent saves in this video haha
I hope they're okay.
