Often, the Pakistani troops would piss in their pants after hearing of his name. He was popular with the name ‘Lyangra’, to the enemy. The enemy had also declared a bounty of 50,000 Pakistani Rupees on his head.
This write-up is dedicated to Subedar Abdul Wahab, Bir Bikrom, for his services in the Bangladesh Liberation war of 1971.
Subedar Abdul Wahab was born in Moricha village near the city of Comilla to father Ali Newaz and mother Mazeda Begum in 1927. As a Bengali, he enlisted in the Pakistani army’s 4th East Bengal Regiment. After the Pakistani Armed Forces launched Operation Searchlight on the 25th of March, 1971, and started their massive campaign of genocide on the Bengalis, the entire 4th East Bengal Regiment defected from service and joined the struggle for independence from Pakistani rule.
Subedar Abdul Wahab also took part in the defection and joined the fighting against the Pakistani troops. After the initial resistance of the Mukti Bahini broke by the first week of April, 1971, Subedar Abdul Wahab and the 4th East Bengal Regiment resorted to using guerilla tactics against the Pakistani army. He took part gallantly in various operations in Shalgarh, Lottamura, the battle of the Shalda river, Mondobhag, Jhikura, Gobindopur, Mirpur-Madhavpur and even made ambushes in Chandla.
The first gallant operation under his leadership was near the banks of the Shalda river. Subedar Abdul Wahab was leading the 7th Platoon of Charlie Company of the Battalion in Debipur on the 12th of April, 1971. He received intel that half a company of Pakistani troops are closing in on their position near the Salda river, to head towards Kasba. Immediately, he asked for permission from Charlie company commander to engage, to which he received permission. He and the 7th Platoon moved towards the Kaltadighi.
Subedar Wahab himself kept a watchful eye on the enemy from a tree after setting up the ambush. He noticed a Pakistani officer leading the troops, with 5-6 Bengali Razakars guiding the route to them. As the enemy came within firing range, Subedar Wahab’s Light Machine gun was the one to fire first, mowing down the enemy troops. Soon, followed the other Mukti Bahini gunfire, and taking them surprise, they unleashed hell upon the surprised Pakistanis. That day, Subedar Abdul Wahab led the ambush successfully, forcing the Pakistanis to retreat with 18 KIAs and 9 men wounded in action.
Subedar Wahab didn’t have a single scratch from his side.
But, Subedar Wahab’s utmost gallantry was seen in the Jhikura village ambush, where he and his team killed several high ranking Pakistani army officers and took revenge for what they did in Comilla.
A Pakistani army Captain Bokhari, was a heinous human being who committed massive genocide in the city of Comilla and raped numerous Bengali women himself. He, alongside 2 more Captains, 2 Majors and 2 Lieutenant Colonels, alongside a Subedar Major from the Pakistani army were heading towards Mondobhag bazaar, Kamalpur from Kasba through the Salda river waterway. The Salda river waterway was used by the enemy to supply the enemy near the border areas. Hence, Pakistani gunboats and speedboats would patrol the river, running escort duties as well.
On the 10th of July, 1971, these high ranking Pakistani officers, alongside troops and Captain Bokhari himself, were on speedboats, heading towards their destination. Subedar Wahab and his comrades were already spread out on both sides of the riverbank, numbering barely a platoon in the Moinpur village. Even with Pakistani troops on the gunboats and with so many officers on the speedboats, Subedar Wahab and his men opened fire on the Pakistanis with LMGs and MMGs, blowing them to bits! The officers were the first target and it was Captain Bokhari and the high ranking officers who were shot dead from the massive tsunami of lead! It was revenge for the Mukti Bahini, especially with the death of Captain Bokhari. The corpses of the officers and soldiers toppled into the waters of the Salda river, and even from this ambush, Subedar Abdul Wahab and his men managed to pull out without a scratch!
The body of Captain Bokhari, the officer who committed mass genocide and rape in Comilla city, was recovered from the water and was found to have been shot no less than 70-72 times! His body was in tatters! For this operation, the enemy hatred against him brewed so much that they declared a bounty of 50,000 Pakistani rupees if he was captured dead or alive.
For his gallant leadership and bravery in combat, Subedar Abdul Wahab was honored with the Bir Bikrom gallantry award by the Bangladeshi government after the end of the war. Unfortunately, after the war, he was suffering from financial constraints, as recorded in 1996 in his last interview, but he didn’t want to receive any financial aid from the government.
He passed away in 2007.

Mukthi bahni was formed on the advice of our great leader Narendra modiji. He went to Bangladesh in 1971to participate the freedom fight. He was caught by Pakistani military and put in jail. Nobody was there to save him from jail. He understood there is a shortage of big leaders in Bangladesh. He himself became the leader inside the jail and formed mukthibahni.
