    I really, really like the idea of a small shoulder "scout" bag as you call it. That's why I've been using one for 35 years. I'm 71 now, and I only carry stuff in my bag that, in 65 yrs or so of trekking, I've actually used. Makes for a very very light bag indeed. For example, my "first aid" kit is a needle, a few band aids, and some Extra Strength 8 hour Tylenol. I also have a garbage bag, a bandanna, a PLB, some cotton balls, and a ferro rod. A folding knife is always in my pocket. Lately I've also been carrying a very light and small Silky Pocketboy for a wood collection I've started. All less than a few pounds including the bag. I very much dislike a backpack on my shoulders, so the sling bag concept is perfect. I could actually get by with just carrying this stuff in my pockets, but I don't like my pants sliding down. My gear loadout is so small and lightweight that I carry it in a woman's ballistic nylon shoulder purse that I got at a thrift shop for a dollar.

    I used to participate in World War 2 re-enactments as a German Mountain Trooper and that's when I learned about and bought an Esbit stove. I fear that people think they were invented by Survival Frog just because they created their own copy when they have been around for many years. Besides that, I wanted to say I like the combination of the sling bag and water bottle carrier. I own a few of the popular shoulder bags, which would be a similar setup.
    Good video and interesting point of focus and different than the usual backpack setup.

    • @verysurvival
      @verysurvival  6 років тому

      survival frog seems to be a bit of a con, they cost 2 or 3 times more of what I see the price of other stoves that are exactly the same. They also call it the Survival Frog stove but t has been around for fucking decades before survival frog was founded,, how can they call it The Survival Frog Stove???

    It's a very wise person that uses a slingpack for essentials in the backcountry. It's something that has to be tried to be appreciated. It's the only pack that virtually goes almost unnoticed once it's placed over your shoulder, in my experience. Also, the more compact the better. There are some excellent and very inexpensive synthetic and even leather slingpacks in thrift stores in the form of leather purses. I have a pricey Coach leather bag that is extremely high quality and a bit heavy, and a thrift store synthetic bag that's pink with little anchors on it that's light as a feather. That's the one I carry. It cost a quarter. It holds all the essentials: fire, water, food, shelter, and a PLB; and it weighs less than 3 lbs fully packed. One of my rules to reduce weight is that no metal goes in the bag. The only metal in it is the magnetic part of my wrist compass, a small ferro rod, the blade on my tiny folding saw, and the metal cap on my Scripto piezo lighter. The PLB has a small amount of metal in the electronics, of course. A small flashlight and single-bladed folding knife are in my pants pockets. I'm an amateur botanist and usually collect short sections of dead tree branches for identification and display at home (I polish the cut ends), so I may pick up a pound or two of weight on a good day in specimens. That's it.

  • @wishiwasamuffin
    @wishiwasamuffin 6 років тому +2

    Great kit! My only suggestion is that since you have extra room, I'd add a few small things. An aluminized "survival" blanket (to help trap and reflect your body heat back towards you), a small medkit (particularly paracetamol, anti-diarrheal pills, and some bandages), some sort of cordage (paracord, string, twine, whatever), a ground cloth (to keep you off of the wet earth if you wind up having to stay overnight in poor conditions), and an extra pair of wool (or wool-like synthetic) socks. ESPECIALLY in the colder months, where frostbite can cost you not only your toes, but your life!
    Glad to see someone with fuel tabs in addition to traditional fire making supplies. Even if you can't make a warming fire, you'll at least be able to boil water to disinfect it.
    Seriously though, get yourself a good quality survival blanket. SOL makes good ones.

    hexamine stoves the old issued tablets were highly toxic not to be ingested or placed in a tent!!
    you may not like toxicity in blood stream or increased levels of
    carbon monoxide poisoning in yer tent the old tablets could make you cough feel sick if ingested
    so well ventilate if using them esbit tabs are prob better!
    than mil.issue they always try to finish ya off with dodgy mil issue gear!! all youd need is tape sling or paracord at waist to stabilise this side pack at hip and yer good to go

    • @verysurvival

      I prefer the Esbit originals but I can't always find them. I just got some sketchy knock offs that smell like rotten fish

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 6 років тому

      Humble Trekker yeh its highly toxic stay downwinds if it does blowback into yer face stop breathing inhaling until yer well out the way of its fumes
      once saw a guy reduced to vomiting wretching on the floor after cooking insides his tent without ventilating it
      esbit have altered their formulae i think the old hexamines havent but new have altered the chemicals used less pungent us military have moved to gels
      esbit i thought was a swedish co
      so should be able to source them fairly easily or well within sweden but their head offices would put you right regards yer nearest outlet or supplier!
      they have a keen following

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 6 років тому +1

      Humble Trekker to save tabs you can add in yer paper packaging and firewood using quarter or half tab as a firelighter rather than use up all the tabs
      if wind is blowing really hard it pays to invert the cooker arounds so as it gives a lower ground profile and you stick spikes into the ground instead of turning em upwards!
      good on softer ground
      or in windy conds!! :)

    • @verysurvival
      @verysurvival  6 років тому +1

      Esbit is German, the tabs still smell but not as much as the other brands. its a really good idea add some dry twigs, especially in minus temps. the tabs don't go far then . I never thought about turning it upside down, thanks can try that

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 6 років тому

      Humble Trekker yeh i think esbit now own optimus stoves co which is swedish i know that theres sone sort of a tie up somewheres between the 2 cos!
      cuz esbits been going for years as has optimus over 110yrs old!!
      so both cos are very well established im.after an svea type pressure stove! but are getn rarer the chinese are doing an ok copy of it but the original is nice to do up as a project i like optimus stuff
      especially once refurbed polished back up its great heavy duty long lasting kit the earlier models require far less parts to carry for repairs or maintenances than the modern stuff thats using polymer plastics which can often melt instead of solid brass real metal parts on the optimus cooker!
      the nova is a great stove has just been issued to the austrian mt divisions for uses at altitude on patrol is fairly silent too!!
      beats the msr whisperlite which i own im on my 5th fuel pump with my msr!!
