    As someone who worked on them this is in fact a AH-64D Apache Longbow with the APG-78 fire-control, target acquisition system and radar frequency interferometer bubble removed. You can clearly see its bottom mount above the main rotor mast. Standard Apache units have a simple mast cap flush on top of the main rotors

    I remember turning up to a line rescue incident a number of years ago. As the only line rescue team in my whole Fire Brigade it felt pretty badass having everyone waiting on our arrival to rescue the casualty. Then we requested Coast Guard in the event we couldn't rescue her, they arrived hanging out the helicopter doing a low pass. Now that was a badass arrival and made me feel like I was playing at my job 😂 probably how those firefighters felt in their badass rigs when an even badasser Apache gunship lands beside them

    I have been that close to a fire rescue Helicopter, easily twice the size of this Apache, as it filled internal water tanks from a suburban lake (not unlike the one in this video) to fight a nearby bushfire. And even through the video compression I can tell this caused more wind and was far noisier then that beast.

    My cousin was a Marine helicopter pilot and they were returning in formation after some training near Fort Drum and he landed in a small park just outside Syracuse NY on a Monday morning. It wasn't planned, he got a chip light and said, "Something sounded bad" the safest course of action was to land and shut down the engine. They sent some Army technicians to look at the problem. The local cop was pretty surprised to see a Huey gunship landing.

    Very good analysis of the Apache. You can also tell by the fact that the Navigation lights and strobes are on the engine nacelles instead of the wings. But I will say that assembly on top isnt an antenna, It's nothing but a derotation unit that sits up there where you take of the FCR. It has no purpose.

  • @discofishing
    @discofishing 10 років тому +21

    Yes, it's still an Apache. The term "Longbow" is more in reference to the Longbow fire control radar that sits on top of about a third of the total fleet. The nub on top the the rotor system here is is called a de-rotation unit and is where the radar would normally sit. It has nothing to do with antennas. I'd know, I worked on these for 8 years. They usually hav military personnel on scene for events lik this. The guy in yellow was doing squat cept trying to look important. The pilot was lik i fly this bad boy at night with one eye. He was prob playn ludacris' "move bitch get out da way" in his helmet

    • @shakenama
      @shakenama 5 років тому +4

      Totally agree. I don't care if you're fire, police or security. or whoever. If the pilot encountered LOTR, or an engine altogether, he would have came down hard. At that height there's no time for autorotate. He would have came down hard and possible injuries. People were easy to close.

      I was thinking the same thing. I've only done one static display but we had people wait behind a fence until we were shut all the way down. Too sketchy to have people walk around with blades turning IMO

    Um, where's the AN/APG-78 Longbow? An Ah-64D Longbow isn't really a "Longbow" without it's Longbow radar....

    • @dustindykes7523

      A D model AH-64 is a Longbow regardless of if the fire control radar is mounted or not. Notice above the main rotor head there is a derotation unit installed. This aircraft has likely had an FCR or a UR installed at some point in its life span.

    If you notice the pilot is not looking out the window, he is looking down. With their HMD eyepiece they can use the camera system on the nose and see right through the floor to the ground.

      No, the Apache is an American design. The British have a license to build their own AH1 version based on the American design. Boeing, the designer and manufacturer, is an American company.

      Ahem: designed at the Hughes Helicopter Inc plants in Culver City & Palomar, CA. Manufactured at new Mesa, AZ plant by McDonald Douglas Helicopter, Inc, after MDHC bought Hughes in 1984. Fuselage originally built by Ryan Aeronautical, Inc, of San Diego, CA, and later by Boeing helicopter division, after Boeing bought all of McDonald Douglas in 1997. The British aircraft are built under a licensing agreement from Boeing by Westland Aircraft.

    I wonder how many of those civilians thought "the person in the front seat must be the driver".
    The crew member in the rear seat is aircraft commander and chief pilot.
    The person in the front seat acts as operator for the weapons turret and as a secondary pilot.

    I remember seeing a formation of these and some Seahawks (I think...well, one of the H-60 variants) fly by while I was hiking the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse trail last summer. RIMPAC was going on, and it was quite a sight, especially since they were flying lower to the sea than we were, since we were up on the cliffs. Oooh, and that sound as they passed...
