I had Rhogam shot in 1971 when I started learning I am Rh negative, then carried a card to say that I must have another Rhogam from blood loss or after having another child . I have learned from then to now which has now been 42 years but have learned RH neg are very unique which I’ve known my whole life before I was aware of blood type ,we Rh negs have lots in common.
Okay here's my problem why are they giving women rhogam that have Rh negative babies they don't need rhogam if the baby is negative only if the baby is positive nor will they tell you the baby's blood type. This is called protocol so that everybody can get paid in spite of what they're doing to the child in the mother when it's not needed
With Rh negative babies they don't give the second Rhogam injection (after the baby is born). The first one is given early on before they know the baby's blood type.
@@failedfishermanBC yes but, i read in text book that , testing babies rh factor is risky, May result in some injury. If wife is negative and husband is positive, They should get it before and after pregnancy ,
Btw I am A-RH NEGATIVE I had rhogam after the birth of my first son in 1986 But I definitely would not have allowed them to inject me with that if I knew about Rh negative Rh positive etc. etc. and I know that the first birth of an Rh positive child from an RH negative mother won’t do any harm at all it’s always the consecutive bursts afterwards but there was no mixing of the blood there was no anything I had a regular birth no problems whatsoever there was no reason for them to have given me that and it is made out of human blood well at least what I got in 1986 but I would never ever let them inject me with that again
If mother is Rh - , first pregnancy and baby is Rh+ , then the mother AFTER giving birth to Rh+ baby will then need the Rhogam in case she gets pregnant second time?? Please clarify
I had to get this shot before I had to get an abortion because of my baby's blood and my baby having complications. But this helped me understand the shot better. I am in fact Rh negative but had no idea what to think about the shot or the card I got when I found out.
So clear and simple. Thank you. One question though , rhogum is "anti D antibodies" right ? Then what are rhesus antibodies that are produced during a sensitization in a rh - vet mother who was not given prophylaxis . By giving rhogum all what we do is have antibodies in store to cover the antigen on RBCs, before the APCs present them as foreign to the immune system right ? Can u please explain whether anti D Abs and rhesus antibodies is the same or not
I don't completely understand but it seems like the ant D abs and the Reyes antibodies do opposite things. The Rhogam anti-dibodies would protect the baby while the others would attack, because you've built an immunity to that blood type after a blood transfusion or whatever. One is an immunity for you one is an immunity for the child. I might be completely wrong but that's my understanding, I'm probably about to have to get the Rhogam shot myself
Tnx for good information! I want to understand rho gam giving just routinely/roule at 28w(3th trimester)? If giving starting 3th trimester (25w/26w/27w) it can be effected during pregnancy ? again at 28w or later needed for cooms test and another dose? You said memory b cell sensitive at 28w...so everytime cooms test will be positive givining to rho gam?? Please 🙏 answer my questions tnx
I am B+ and my husband is B+. My daughter was born in a military hospital and we were told she was B+ (it is on her newborn health record). Now 22 years later she is being told by her OBGYN that she is B-. My other two children were also B+. Rhogam is contraindicated for Rh+. Her husband is O+. I don't want her to have the shot is she is Rh+ because of the side effects it causes in Rh+ people. Can anyone explain how she could have changed her Rh value?
I was told I was A+ at birth but I am in fact O-. Did not find out until my first pregnancy. It was common back in the 90s for blood types to be wrong I think. I know a few people my age that had issues like this.
A reason that you would've been told your daughter was Rh pos is that her reverse type was from the mother's (yours) since babies don't have antibodies. Since it was your first child, you didn't need rhogam because anti-D doesn't effect the baby/mother until subsequent pregnancies. Your daughter was typed B- and since her husband’s blood was O+, giving RhoGam was necessary. They don’t give RhoGam to Rh positive mothers.
thanks! That was a great explanation to a confusing topic I have been having trouble understanding. One question, is the point of giving th Rhogam to the mother within 72 hrs after birth just so she doesn't make antibodies that may affect a future pregnancy? It doesn't have any benefit at that exact moment, right?
but u already gave a rhogam shot duirng their 28week gestation, why give again in 72 hrs ? wouldn't the 28week shot immunoglobulins exist for life ? is the 72 hr one different kind of shot ?
real talk If the father is negative there is no need for the shot at all (unless you think the father was someone else). If the mother has amniocentesis and knows the baby has negative blood, again, no need for any harmful injections. There is only a risk of sensitization if the baby's blood somehow mixes with the mothers, like during birth. I had C-sections and so did my mother and her mother. For some reason we just don't go into labor even when induced. So I'm not sure there would be any chance for contamination. For me, they gave me that damn shot after every pregnancy ended no matter how it ended, birth, miscarriage, abortion, any pregnancy that ended...the shot was given. I had a lot of those stupid shots. I was very fertile. Seems like some doctors try to force it on every negative woman whether she needs it or not. But no, it's my understanding that a single shot won't give immunity for life. Or at least, that's what they want us to believe.
Med School Made Easy I’m confused on sensitization. RHOGAM helps prevent sensitization, so I’m understanding. So, if a patient has been sensitized, the RHOGAM won’t help? If you already make your own antibodies to RH+, you can’t “unlearn?” Asking from the point of view of an RH- woman who’s experienced several chemical pregnancies and one ectopic which went self-corrected (ended on its own.) Patient received Rhogham after that ectopic / miscarriage but might it be too late and She makes her own antibodies to Rh+. (Her husband is rh+) She has no children.
@@smutches The Rhogam creates a sort of fake antibodies to cover the fetal Rh receptors so that those of the mother cannot bind with them even if they do exist. The reason they give them at 28wk is because it is common for maternal and fetal blood to start mixing minimally at that time period but enough to cause the mother to form antibodies that can attack the fetus. As previously mentioned, rhogam doesn't last more than 12 weeks and during delivery maternal and fetal blood mixes again and if the mother has antibodies against the fetal blood then the fetus will experience blood hemolysis (the breaking down of red blood cells) which could be (and usually is) fatal
I’m O neg and my first baby was also O neg but I think I was given the shot anyway, supposedly to prevent problems with future pregnancies. I also got the Rhogam shot each pregnancy after. I have no idea if I’ve been sensitized or not.
depends on blood type of father in each situation and of the child. the mother could find out her current blood type and be given rhogam if still Rh negative
There is a typo in my comment below because I’m using voice recognition On my phone so it is not typing my words properly so I did not say burst I said births
This has been the simplistic most effective explanation I've ever received.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video :)

thanks for watching!
Thank you for giving an explanation. So many sources don’t explain how the RhoGAM works.
brilliant!!! thank you!!!!! I was trying to figure this out but you explain it so well...no one explained it this well for me.
At last, i could move forward! Thanks for making this simple and easy to understand. I was to give up then i found this🥺
Simple and best explanation…Thanks
you're welcome! thanks for watching
Use your better intuition, fellow Rh negs..

great Video! really cleared the concept of giving rhogam (anti-D IgG)!
Thanks for breaking it down!
Thank you.. for making this so easy to understand, very informative. it really helped me
the best explanation. thanks for this
you're welcome, Maritcho!!
Wont that synthetic rhogam antibodies affect the foetus??? Bcoz after all even they are a antibody.
Beautiful explanation!

Thanks a bunch.

she can't change her RH status... blood bank 20 years ago probably made a lab error, have her check her blood type again in another lab to be sure

that was so useful thankyouuuuuuu soooooooooo muchhhhh
