Big Guillermo Del Toro fan! I distinctly remember seeing it at the cinema, looking over and seeing people literally on the edge of their seats. It totally draws you in. The theater reactions were so invested and that’s honestly pretty rare to see now.
One of my favorites in Del Toro's fantastic filmography! The story is quite simple yet ultimately well told, with solid characters and some great performances (Chastain is especially good in this). However, it's absolutely the production design of Crimson Peak that I love so much. Its practical sets are so lived-in and elegantly crafted. And the ghosts, which are certainly enhanced with CGI as you mentioned, were also brought to life by the great Doug Jones and Javier Botet in-costume, which I think look fantastic and don't overstay their welcome. Absolutely love this one and so glad Del Toro was able to execute on his vision with a relativelt large budget for such a non-crowd-pleasing movie. He is an artist at heart, and as you say, one of the last great auteurs we have in cinema.
Excellent review! If I was blind to this film and didn’t already know I wanted it in my collection I'd have ordered it based off your insightful video. Oh, and that lavish packaging is appropriately lovely!
I was let down by this movie in theatres. Fully expected a rose red clone and that’s what I wanted as a teenager. But I try to revisit it every year to see if I’ve aged into it. Weirdly enough it’s the sibling relationship I find to actually be scary now. Being unable to bear a child with the only one who has shown you love never mind how toxic. How must that sister have felt. I thought the relationship was cheap as a kid but now I ponder it. And the only one I ever loved trying to kill the only other person I’ve ever loved.
The divisiveness of this film has always baffled me. I have a friend who loves Gothic literature and film and he hated it. I loved it since I first saw it. And I disagree that it’s not a horror film. I get why Del Toro says it isn’t; the expectations that word carries have changed over the decades. But it is as much a horror film as Corman’s Poe films.
Thanks for this. I disliked the movie on the first watch in the theater - I, too, was sucked in by the marketing to think it was horror. Over the pandemic, I rewatched it a number of times and grew to adore this movie. Del Toro’s commentary on the original Blu (which I think is on this edition?) helped me understand and appreciate this fantastic movie. It’s my favorite del Toro film now.
Ill definitely have to pick this one up at some stage. This is actually one of the rarest occasions I fell asleep during, wasnt feeling it at all back in the day but it deserves a second chance, usually love all his films
I have found that I went from lukewarm on my initial viewing to it becoming the movie of his that I have rewatched most often. I agree about the CGI, but my gosh, the rest of the film is so sumptuously enveloping that I just like being in that world. My pre-order should be arriving soon...!
I remember being so engrossed in this movie that the ghosts didn't pull me out of it. Absolutely adore it. It's a valid complaint though. Very solid review, Heath!
Has anyone ever noticed that in the scene where the actress Mia (Edith Cushing) has a quick conversation on the stairwell at the beginning of the movie, that the picture is flipped? Her birth mark is on the other side of her face. I noticed it right away when I saw it in the theaters way back when.
I was fortunate when we saw this movie, because I was familiar with the viccitudes of this sort of Gothic Romance because of having read Leonard Wolf's annotations of DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN. I want this edition of the movie, which appears to have a great deal more extras than the original home video release. But you had me at Guillermo del Toro.
I recall liking but not loving it. I doubt I would spend the money on the 4K when I have so many favorite movies of mine still languishing on DVD (or I don’t own at all). But I will probably rewatch it one day.
uff dont want to spoil it for me so i pose your video LOL, this is one of the two movies from Del Toro that we haven't seen because we got our second baby at the time so my wife and i could not go to the movies and when it came out on BR, i bought it but for one reason or another we could not watch it and was lost in time for us. I love Del Toro and his movies so i will probably buy this release and use ti as an opportunity to watch it for the first time :)
I was so disappointed on the first watch. Honestly, I disliked it because it wasn’t at all what I thought it was due to marketing. BUT! I rewatched it about 6 months ago on a whim and fell in LOVE with it. The set is gorgeous..I don’t feel the need to pick up the 4k right away…but I’ll definitely pick the 4k on down the line.
I do enjoy Del Toro cinema, but this didn't gel with me. Stunning cinematography and sets as usual, but the story just didn't captivate me. It also felt longer than it needed it to be. Glad to see it receive a stunning release though!

Loved your breakdown of the new 4K Crimson Peak. Keep up the excellent work!

Good breakdown of what Gothic actually is. I didn’t care for this movie very much, but I appreciated what Del Toro was going for.

Thanks for the insightful review!
Got the standard BD release last year on sale...good enough for my shelf 😀👍
I have the sane release on Blu-Ray I’d love if they make the 4k available in a regular case
Arrow usually does a standard release after these big, elaborate ones. Hope you can get the one you want!
Great!

My dude, the ghosts in this one were so good to me, sorry you didn't like them. Have you seen The Devils Backbone?
Yeah, Del Toro makes a lot of movies about young people in traumatic situations, but always with a supernatural element.
Intelligent thoughtful review 😊

Good movie but I wish Jessica Chastain's performance had been a bit more subtle
