Just to anyone that is due to go and have this procedure. I had mine 2 days ago, I do live in the UK so different countries and hospitals will vary. I can safely and honestly say it was a breeze. Nothing to it. I had absolutely no side effects to it at all. I didn't at any stage feel sick. Once it was over I was allowed to go home where I made my way through 1 punnet of strawberries, 1 punnet of blueberries, 1 tin of baked beans and 13 pints of water. I went to the toilet the next day as normal, no problems, no constipation nothing. I didn't feel ill once, or like I wanted to be sick nothing. If you follow the after care advise to the tee you will be absolutely fine. The main thing to do once you've had your barium swallow is to drink drink drink and drink some more. The water is what allowed me to feel fine and not constipated the next day. If I had to have another one tomorrow I would gladly do it just to see my insides on the monitor, it was fascinating! As they say in the UK it was a piece of piss (easy)!!
I am on the Autism spectrum. I struggle with not knowing what to expect and textures a lot. I found this very helpful. Thank you very much! You’re amazing!
I'm told mine will be mixed with cottage cheese and they'll be watching all through my small bowel to the colon. ALREADY had the traditional barium liquid type- is THIS much worse?
Just had this done.Had alot of nausea from an ulcer. After listening to alot of people talking about getting nausea from the baruim was really afraid.Drank the baruim,it was terrible but my stomach felt better, the baruim will coat your ulcer helping with the nausea.
I ended up bailing on mine because I kept seeing people say they had "severe" stomach cramps afterwards, and I panicked... OTL Also because I'd be stuck at my work long afterwards and didn't want to be running to the office bathroom all the time.
I just had one this morning and I really wish I would have researched first, my office didn’t tell me that I was going to have to drink the barium or that i was going to be there awhile. My barium was vanilla super chalky and nasty but not very thick thankfully. I was done in about an hour and a half but she said sometimes it can take up to hours or even had people have to come back the next day. I also did not have to have magnesium at the end. I had to have this x ray done to be able to do the capsule endoscopy.
Was there background music? I turned it all the way up but it made it hard to hear. I’m sure it was meant to be relaxing but it created a problem in hearing for me, otherwise great and appreciated information.
I just did that yesterday. Once again nothing showed up so thats good, but then i still have no answers. I am 66 and have digestive issues since infancy.
I am guessing because they empty you out it takes away the natural peristalsis. That is my fear. That once my intestines don't have anythjng to move the test will be moot.
Any update, I have an extremely hard time swallowing even choke on water or spit sometimes if not careful :/ nothing will stay down either so I barely eat
I just finished mine it only took a couple hours maybe a little less I didn’t get a shot of magnesium is that only if you show that you’re impacted? Thank you so much for sharing! You at a life saver. Unexplained stomach issues for years. I’m I was similar I already was having stomach issues this morning so I’m drinking it and getting the van down was kind of tricky because it made me sick I never throw up but it came back home a couple times afterwards though I am starving even though I don’t know if it’s a good idea to eat because I’m nauseated I’m so hungry right now
Got it done today. My prep was not so thick, it reminded me of a banana smoothie. Was never prescribed a laxative or told to get one. Had a bowel movement 3 hours ago and now 10 hours after the procedure my stomach feels bloated... but I haven’t ate in 7 hours. Did your stomach or lower right side give you any bloating or pain?
Oh you had it way better than mine then, I would’ve taken the smoothie haha! I don’t remember if there was any bloating or pain, but I do remember feeling super gross and uneasy afterwards!
Rachel Greene a day later and I’m feeling much better. Was backed up for the most of the morning but was able to finally have a movement in the afternoon and was surprised to see that it was very very pale in color, the barium is finally out! My stomach has returned to normal.
Can technicians detect lung problems from a barium swallow test? Because when I went for my barium swallow my lungs appeared white and I read online that they should be black on an xray iv been experiencing sharp chest pains a lot so I’m very paranoid
yeah i was supposed to get one today and bailed but i have to go again. terrified of the drink and how it tastes and whether or not it’ll make me throw up. any tips
Just do it fast and try not to think about it! I just talked myself through it the whole time and reminded myself that it’s just a moment in my lifetime and it’ll be over literally before you know it!
Hi what was your symptoms. I keep getting a really bad stomach I had the camera down my throat and all was clear. I have a pelvis X-ray but still waiting for the results. In the last 6 months Iv had 3 flare ups where my stomach really hurts feels like my stomach and a bit lower down
Had this done today and the barium made it through my small intestine by my very first 20 minute X-ray check 😳 still waiting to find out what that means
Girl I was told I was having an endoscopy even when I checked in I said I was there for an endoscopy then all of a sudden they are asking me to drink this crap and I didn’t even know what I was getting done. I’m mad. I would have liked to prepare for that. My doc didn’t order this damn swallow study. 🤦🏻♀️ I was only there for 20 mins they just took X-rays while I was swallowing.
Oh gosh. I feel for everyone who had to take this nasty drink. Mine was literally a few sips of it in nesquick milkshake, it was the sweetest and nicest thing I've ever tasted and the staff kept laughing n joking w me throughout. Didnt seem as major or serious as these ones here
@@RachelGreene barium is definitely a gift that keeps on giving- I kept passing small amounts in my stool for 3 days- but then maybe some got hung up in my diverticulosis pockets in my left lower colon!

Awh thanks! I'm glad I could help!
It’s tomorrow. Any tips for the texture. Is it better to just chug or sip on it?
chug it if you can, just get it over with! I tried sipping it and I just kept gagging

I am having this test tomorrow. I am so nervous. I am a big texture person and don't like chalky drinks or medicines.
I’m the same way girl! How did it go?
Thank you!
This helped me out so much. I was really nervous about this test but thanks to your video I feel a bit more prepared.
I’m happy I could help! 🤗
Thank you for this video, my son with autism has the test tomorrow and this gives me a much better idea of how to support him
Awh that makes me so happy to hear that! I’m happy I could help and I hope his test goes well tomorrow! 🤍
Thank you Racheal, I have one of these in the morning, diagnosed with crohns in 2001, had a small bowel resection in 2020, thanks again

Mine truly wasn’t that bad, maybe I just got lucky? If you need to have one done you should consider trying again, it could be really important 🤗
