    Terry Taylor actually had a lot of charisma, he was on the commentary team for AWF and he was honestly pretty damn funny

      It did not translate in his performance as a wrestler . Brad Armstrong was supposedly among the most hilarious and witty people back stage but he couldn’t do it in front of an audience . Just his friends . Probably same with Taylor .

    Terry Taylor was awesome!!! He just happened to come in at the wrong time. If he had been 5 years later, he would’ve been a superstar.

    Taylor & DiBiase had been two of my favorites since '88. DiBiase was riding high going against Savage for the World Title when Taylor made the jump to WWF(E) after a superbly underrated heel turn from '87. Strangely enough, BOTH men were "World Champion" at different times in their careers. DiBiase held the WWF title VERY briefly in early '88 (the reign is an "unofficial" one) & Taylor held the World JUNIOR Title about a year after his debut around '81.

    Vince tried to treat Terry Taylor as a joke like he did with Dusty, except he knew his colorful presence made the polkadots work.

      Ugh, another moron who thinks the Polka Dots were a rib or Vince treating Dusty bad, when in reality Dusty was wearing Polka Dot outfits already in the 70's and it simply was one of his things.

    Taylor was a star with WCCW and Mid South (later WCW). He was a Tommy Rich type character, better as a face than a heel.

      Liked Terry as a heel, better. His interviews were better, and he sort of has an "edge" to his character. Loved him in UWF and WCCW. Hated the Red Rooster and Tailor Made Man gimmicks, equally. In hindsight, it kind of killed his career prematurely.

    The thing is "Red Rooster" isn't a bad nickname. That was the nickname of multiple Gold Glove winner, Doug Rader. But it's a nickname, not a character.

    • @haljordan777
      @haljordan777 6 місяців тому +1

      Bruce Prichard claims that Vince gave Terry Taylor the Red Rooster nickname because he was conceited. Prichard claims that it was Taylor's decision to act like a chicken. If Prichard's version of events is true, Taylor misinterpreted the gimmick and thought they wanted him to cluck like a chicken. Or they told him to do that and Prichard is lying.

  • @timthegem
    @timthegem Рік тому +2

    I don't think it's a secret who came up with that gimmick (Prichard and Patterson). But it's been said that a great talent can either get a bad gimmick over, or leverage it to become something different. Like we saw the cheesy Rocky Maivia do when he joined Nation of Domination.

    Terry was the only wrestler who ever gave me a high five at an ordinary house show. No one else gave a ** if there were no cameras on.

    Allegedly Taylor had a cocky attitude going into the WWF. That’s when Vince straddled him with the Red Rooster gimmick.. “you think your the cock of the walk? okay your going to be a cock”.

    There are bad gimmicks, but if it's a good enough wrestler he can get over with any gimmick. Look at Dusty Rhodes when Vince gave him that plumber/polka dot gimmick.... He still got over with the fans.

  • @Jim-Tuner
    @Jim-Tuner 6 місяців тому

    The gimmick wasn't Terry Taylor's only problem. It was also how he was booked. He was never pushed as a credible heel. He was put into match after match with guys at the bottom of the card like Jim Brunzell, Scott Casey and Sam Houston. His highest profile match as a heel was probably a time limit draw with Koko B. Ware. At house shows, he was always second match.
    He never did much as a heel in terms actually doing heel things. He was never even given a program with anyone that amounted to anything.
    Then they made him a face and dumped him into a long feud with a jobber (Steve Lombardi)
    Heenan never talked red rooster up. He was always presented as a small guy who fought other small guys.

  • @Holden308
    @Holden308 Рік тому +1

    For me the talent who could/should have been a BIG star but never really was, its Koko B Ware. The only thing that stopped Koko from being an absolute superstar was that he was short (5'7"). If he was even just 6 inches taller and about 30-40 lbs heavier (which would have put him about the same size as the Ultimate Warrior), he'd have been a major belt contender ... the guy oozed charisma, but he just wasn't big enough physically.

    • @DixiePokerAce
      @DixiePokerAce Рік тому

      Koko was unfortunate to be around when Vince only wanted bigger guys with larger than life personalities at the top. Koko was extremely athletic and way over with fans. Even as a mid card performer the crowds loved Koko.

  • @Holden308
    @Holden308 Рік тому +1

    OK ... we know the polka dots was Vince's way of ribbing or sticking it to another promotion's big star, though to his credit Dusty ran with it and made it work. But what had Terry Taylor done to deserve being labelled as a Red Rooster?? And then to basically being given a gimmick that he was a hack who couldn't get along without the advice of a manager like Bobby Heenan??
    The only one who benefitted from that relationship was Steve Lombardi. His Brooklyn Brawler character got elevated to mid card status for a few months.

    Terry was a great in ring performer who was considered for Mr Perfect, but that Red Rooter gimmick sucked & ruined his career. Maybe he should've replaced Shawn Michaels in the New Rockers. He was just as agile as Shawn & Marty. What a waste of a good talent.

      Neither could I, but Taylor should've either been given a better gimmick or just use his real name like he did in the territories. As for Hennig, He's one of my faves & even got Hulk Hogan to wrestle properly in their matches. The Perfect Plex is also my favourite pinfall maneuver @@donjohn2695

    Love Terry, he was my favorite as a kid. I think that Terry could have gotten the Red Rooster over if he'd bought into it. If Dusty could get polka dots over, it's hard to argue a gimmick kept you down.

      Exactly and look at terry after the rooster he couldn't get over its not the gimmick it's the charisma look at Kevin Nash he has a worse gimmick .. the wizard of oz... Doink the clown, Brutus the barber beefcake, Kane was a dentist, heck even honky tonk man for crying out loud. And Koko b ware as birdman

    Taylor was a good in ring guy but his personality sucked. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. His charisma was in the toilet. His image worked well down south. The young girls loved him. The WWF was a different crowd. The fans were very different.

    They handed one if the driest wrestlers in the world with a gimmick that only a charismatic person could pull off . They had to know that he was no Dusty Rhodes and the Red Rooster Gimmick was worse than polka dots . Bruce Prichard had heat with Terry . Terry was a prick and so us Bruce so they did not get along . Its easy for me to see Bruce pitching this idea at Vince . Terry was cocky , whats cockier than a Rooster ? Vince liked gimmicks close to the wrestlers personality so it was an easy sell . But anyone who knew Terry knew the gimmick side if wrestling was lost on him . I think Bruce instigated this as payback for the shit he had to eat working under Terry in Mid South .
