Learned this beautiful song in fourth grade in my elementary school in Philadelphia in 1938, and still remember the words. Sometimes sang it when I still played guitar. Pure, beautiful music.

My father who was born in 1902 said that his mother would sing that as a lullaby.

My father was also born in 1902 and lived to be 96 (1998), from the horse and buggy days a year before Kitty Hawk into the Internet age on the threshold of the new century and millennium. His 120th birthday was just last month. The year he and your father were born is closer in time to when George Washington was still alive than to today. His father (my grandfather) was born in 1862 and his mother (my grandmother) in 1868. She also lived to be 96 (1964), from the Civil War era into the Space Age. I am amazed at the thought of what anyone who lived in those spans of time would have witnessed.

This song is pure genius. Meltingly beautiful and sweet beyond measure. To think it was published in 1861, the Civil War underway, men dying like flies on the battlefield in the most terrible war. It only adds to the poignancy of the song. Thank you so much for posting. You're a gem!

This old great song from the civil war was the inspiration of the song "Love me tender" of The king Elvis Presley in the movie "Love me tender in the year 1956 ,(This song have sung by both 2 side of the U.S. war when they were in camping.

Ironic that of the two most well known songs from the Civil War, "Dixie" was a minstrel tune from the North and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" came from a tune of Southern origin.

My Grandpa used to sing this one to me, along with other 'oldies' that were still popular in his youth. He ran a restaurant, and I sat in a highchair back out of the way while he cooked and sang, poking my tummy now and then. I expect to hear "Order Up!" between stanzas. 😂 😘
Now I'm off to find "I Dream Of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" and "The Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane".

The song was public domain when new lyrics were written and made into the title track of Elvis's first movie, "Love Me Tender." There was no one to "rip off" because it was a civil war era song. The original songwriters were long dead. Elvis got co writing credit for adding lyrics to the final arrangement. It was nice to hear the original lyrics, as when people heard it sung in the 1860's.

Recently I watched that movie with Elvis again and listened to that song "Love Me tender". The melody sounded familiar to me but I coudn`t figure out where I heard it before. 🤔
Just by humming it, then in the middle of the movie it came to me and I said to myself: "Hey, that`s the melody from "Ora Lee" or "Aura Lee (Lea)" 😃. This is why I came here to check it up and I was right. Also your comment helped me a lot and confirmed my assumption. 🤩👍

The one time I thought I had found an original song by Elvis.
Don't get me wrong, Elvis was an absolutely fantastic singer. But he didn't have many original songs.

    • @ChrisDeJuanMusic
      @ChrisDeJuanMusic 2 роки тому +2

True, he wasn't so much of a musician/composer/song writer as he was a charismatic (and hansom of course) entertainer and front man... which is a different talent all together. Of course he also had a great voice! Don't get me wrong, I'm no Elvis fan, but as a musician myself, I've come to appreciate the latter talent in certain artists

@Lord M I would like to see some evidence that Elvis claimed that he composed the songs.
If the claim is that he didn't credit the original authors properly then that I can believe (although some evidence would still be nice). But did he claim to have composed the songs himself?

This was the most popular Union love song. Beautiful. Not well known today. Became the tune for "Army Blue"; later the same tune was used by Elvis' "Love Me Tender,"
"Lorena," a Southern song wS sung on both sides. SOUTH Sang Lorena as the left a burning Atlanta,Georgia.

Soldiers would long for home with both Aura Lee and Lorena. Aura Lee did not go home with most Southern soldiers. What ashamed. Tennessee Ernie Ford did not record it. My Southern Virginia great grandfather was company musician. He took it West with him.

Yes, sir. "Someone" was Ken Darby, a much-respected lyricist who worked in Hollywood for many years. He gave the rights to his wife, Vera, and I believe that Elvis also is given 'official' credit. But Darby did the main work on it.

Hi Tom. Nice version as always. Strangely enough I've just uploaded this song and was not aware you had recorded this. Very interesting watching yours after my own efforts. Not an easy song to illustrate I found but we both seem to have gone along similar lines although our Musical arrangements are quite different which I always think is healthy. Keep up the great work on your channel. I always enjoy listening in from time to time especially as we both share an interest in this particular area of song.
    Best wishes from the UK.
p.s. I've just put the same comment on a different channel as I didn't realise it was not yours until after I'd posted. CB26.

I think you are singing verses as chorusus, I know it's confusing as it says Aura Lea twice like in the chorus.
But I'm pretty sure in the old booklets they are verses.
