    FINALLY! A tutorial that really explains salt on watercolor with not only about timing but the "sheen" or "not so sheen-y" so to know what to look or wait for. This was a great one. I do love your tutorials. Thanks, Karen. Candace, Eugene, OR

    Wonderful Karen! I am actually trying some new textures with salt and being indeed somehow disappointed. Not getting the exact texture I expected. however I understand now it also depends on the type of salt, the type of paper, the moment you add the salt... Well I need some practice, let’s summarize 😉 Your daisies are a great idea to start with. Thank you for your tips and tutos that I have been following with huge interest for several months now. I have 2 questions for you. You always have such lovely clean borders, when I use the brown tape it’s sticks so fast that I end up ripping the paper. What’s the best thing to do? And, when I use masking fluid, again I have a big problem listing it off without taking a Bayern of the paper off with it. Any tips here please? Thanks in advance.

    • @KarenRiceArt
      @KarenRiceArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your questions Janet. First I just want to make sure you are using framing tape and not gummed tape, they are both brown. Gummed tape you have to use water with and framing tape is like masking tape. I use framing tape. If it is tearing your paper use a hairdryer to soften the glue, before removing the tape. Masking fluid gets very complicated, check out my video where I give you lots of information about masking fluid:ua-cam.com/video/p44udLKnQ6w/v-deo.html. Hope this was helpful :)

    I've noticed that besides the tone and water content, that different colors and whether they are staining, granulating, or transparent seem to affect the salt technique greatly. I just haven't figured out the principle yet. Any thoughts?
    Also, I found that living in a damp climate that I have to keep drying the salt to get the biggest effects.

    • @KarenRiceArt
      @KarenRiceArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment, it also depends on the type of salt, the type of paper, the moment you add the salt, the paint, you name it! What I love is you are never quite sure what is going to happen! 😀

      Hi, if you are worried about the long term effects of salt on watercolour paper, especially for commissions etc… you could spatter with water onto damp paint 😀

  • @ferretocious
    @ferretocious Рік тому +1

    The thing I find hard about salt is that you've got to have just the right amount of water, pigment, drying AND the right kind of salt. I bought some finer table salt and it does NOTHING. Nor does the sea salt do anything. Only the table salt worked. I think it's a great idea to do what you did - experiment a head of time with each kind of salt, paper, levels of pigment, water, dryness.

      @@KarenRiceArt ok. Thank you Karen. No hurry.
      I was wondering if you would consider teaching us how to paint an angel. I am too much of a beginner to try it on my own. Well. I’ve tried but it’s difficult. There is not much out there.

    Can I use salt as an alternative to Brusho?

    • @KarenRiceArt

      Salt will create texture like Brusho, but you won't get the colours. I would suggest watercolour pencils and sandpaper rubbed on the tip and then allow the pigment to fall onto the damp paper. Hope this was helpful 😊

    What kind of tree is your twig?

      The twig is from an apple tree, but you can use a twig from any tree, apple seems best though... seems to hold the paint better (just my opinion). If it's fresh from the tree, just let it dry out for a bit then just sharpen it with a pencil sharpener and you are good to go. 😊

    I think you misspoke about salt removing paint. It does not. Salt removes water which results in paint pigments clumping and depositing in different ways. This is exactly why damp paint reacts differently than wet paint, and dry/near dry paint does not react--the water has evaporated and pigment has deposited so adding salt will not remove as much water and pigment won't move. And this is why reconstituting with water sometimes works. The effect of salt interacting with the pigment varies by the chemistry of the pigment and the size of pigment particles. That is an additional effect of salt. The different salts may create different effects because of minor mineral inclusions in the salts and their chemical interaction with the pigment. Table salt for example is highly refined--minerals removed but the iodine added. Sea salt is not refined as much and has many minor components.
