How the overlay works: red color channel is taken from buffed version, green and blue - from unbuffed version. So, if the color of a pixel in both versions are same, then after overlaying its color is NOT distorted. If there is a difference, then the color is distorted depending on which color channels prevail.

Wouldn't it be more effective if you just chose to leave the unbuffed white with the rest of the level and leave the buffed as red. This would eliminate the weird 3d effect that makes it hard to really see differences.
