Amar Vangani that is because the simple DC regulators dissipate the extra voltage as heat. So if you draw 1 amp at 5 volts (5 watts power) from the regulator, if you are putting 24 volts in, you’ll generate 19 watts of heat! You should google DC DC step down converter. They are cheap.

To use a car Radio at Home use a 12V Transformer with 10A Output, connect it to a Bridge-Rectifier, connect a Buffer-Capacitor with 10.000µF and thats it. For a Car Radio you don't need Voltage Regulators. These Radios work in a Voltage Range up to near 15V. But don't connect Power Supplies with a Half-wave rectifier (single Diode) to a Radio. It's highly inefficient, causes strong noise in the Speakers and can stress the internal electronic components. Always use Bridge-Rectifiers with 4 Diodes and Buffer Capacitors to reduce the AC Ripple on the DC Voltage.
