    No mention of how Mozart was composing Requiem at the time, and how once he got so sick he realized he was composing it for his own funeral? Pretty interesting side story that was left out :(

      That joke can be verifiably traced at least as far back as the middle of the 19th century. Along with the one that Beethoven couldn't find his composition teacher because he was Haydn. Try to add a new one to the Liszt.

    It is worth noting that Salieri confessed to murdering Mozart; however, his "confession" came many years later when he was confined in an asylum, and he was completely insane by then.

    • @dorarouzi
      @dorarouzi 6 років тому +2

      His confession was only in the film Amadeus, which I really love, and yes they were rivals but I don't think Salieri killed Mozart. I think the Freemasons did it because the last 7 years of his life Mozart became a freemason too.

    Could have been sepsis. Crazy swelling is one of the biggest symptoms, at least near the end. He could have contracted sort of infection--strep throat, etc., a myriad of others--and became septic with it. Swelling is NOT just a symptom of kidney dysfunction; heart failure causes this too, but even worse sepsis causes massive vasodilation, causing fluid to leak out of his blood vessels and into his tissues, causing massive edema/swelling. Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response, affecting all organ systems, including the heart + kidneys.

    She failed to mention that prior to Mozart's fatal illness, his medical history was't the one of the healthiest on men either. It wouldn't have been so surprising that he had died years before of one of the health issues he had previously suffered. What is surprising is that he managed to be so prolific in spite of those severe health issues.

    One additional contributory cause of Mozart's death could be liver failure. My friend was quite well one day, went to bed but the next morning, he was so swollen he looked pregnant. He also had a rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. The diagnosis was liver cirrhosis. The remedy was to do a paracentesis-a probe is inserted in the lower abdomen. They removed 11 litres of fluid--22 pounds lose in 35 minutes. To me,this could be also what Beethoven suffered from. Beethoven, as you know, was an alcoholic, thus bringing on liver failure. As I rightly remember, Mozart became deeply depressed after his father died,; according to the movie Amadeus, he spent his time composing --and drinking. I really feel that Mozart, Beethoven and my friend have similar symptoms. The only difference is that back in Mozart and Beethoven's time, alcoholic beverages were laced with lead to improve their taste! If my suspicions are correct,Mozart and Beethoven may also have acquired an STD so they used Mercury , believing it would cure them. If this is true, the cure actually hastened their demise When my friend went for his paracentesis to drain his swollen belly, the size of his abdomen caused difficulty breathing, walking and the ruptured blood vessels under his skin did indeed look like a rash, along with diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. He is gradually improving thanks to modern medicine. Mozart and Beethoven never stood a chance because of their use of Mercury, lead and arsenic

    We literally learned about this in my musicology class today. He had multiple strep infections and other common infections through out his life. His body was so worn down from the infections and multiple illnesses (including a coma when he was around 15) that his kidney's began to fail (it's documented by multiple musicologists) leading to multi-system organ failure at the time of his fatal infection that really killed him. While the video was technically correct, they didn't mention that he would have probably survived if it weren't for his medical history.

    Very interesting summary.
    Additional context:
    Mozart and Salieri were actually on good terms with each other, and each man publicly and privately applauded the other's compositions. The play "Amadeus" was never intended to be historically accurate, a fact that its author had repeatedly explained; SO the tale of Salieri possibly killing Mozart is VERY unlikely (although Beethoven - who studied under Salieri for a while - once wrote that he "wouldn't put it past the old man to have tried").
    Regarding poisoning: Also highly unlikely, as you point out - although there were many other poisons available besides arsenic and mercury (for options, just check the Medici Family Book of Renaissance Recipes for Success).

    For us German speakers it is sooooooooo irksome how English speaking people pronounce Wolfgang. Especially pronouncing gang like they are talking about a street gang. On the other hand, people in Germany and Austria are very considerate as far as foreign words and names go which is why we'll pronounce French words French and English ones English.

    • @TheMasonX23
      @TheMasonX23 7 років тому +4

      Andrew Burnett For the most part, I disagree, and think we should try to pronounce foreign words and names correctly. At the same time, I do know what you're talking about when people go out of their way to pronounce something (often French, as you said) "correctly" just to be pedantic and show how smart they are. It's more of the way they act when they say it, not just the way they say it (correctly).

    The illness that killed Mozart was Henoch Schonlein syndrome. A doctor wrote a book detailing all of Mozart's illnesses and the issue that led to so much damage to his kidneys. Throughout his life Mozart suffered frequent attacks of tonsillitis. In 1784 he developed post-streptococcal Schönlein-Henoch syndrome which caused chronic glomerular nephritis and chronic renal failure. His fatal illness was due to Schönlein-Henoch purpura, with death from cerebral haemorrhage and bronchopneumonia. Dr. Peter J. Davies in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (1983), wrote about it and published a book on the same topic.

She and anyone else who failed to notice her distinct lack of reason should probably watch more science/philosophy videos, but perhaps not SciShow as it seems to have lost its standards.

The whole thing about it takes more than 15 days for your kidneys to fail? Well, 99% of the time, you don't feel any symptoms until your in the final stage of kidney failure if at all. Now the cause of the kidney failure could be a hundred things, but I'd bet money on it. (Edited for spelling errors)

    I don’t know the full details, but as a physician, I think infectious disease/sepsis, leading to multi-organ failure, is the most likely cause for Mozat’s death. It would fit his age group and symptoms decently, although the time course of 2 weeks is a bit long, but still probable.
    One thing about nause/vomiting/diarrhea is that they are very non-specific symptoms, thought to be a natural reaction meant to not waste metabolic energy on digestion when in a crisis. Since they can happen with broken arm, child birth, infections, and many others, it often isn’t that helpful in determining a diagnosis, and can certainly happen when your GI system is fine.

IIRC, someone discover a letter Mozart sent to his vacationing cook/house-keeper where he (Mozart) mentioned cooking his own pork. But then again, Mozart was fond of spending time in public houses where under-cooked pork could have been served.
