- BREAKING ENTRENCHED STRUCTURES: ALTERNATIVE FRAMES FOR TRANSFORMATIVE OUTCOMES IN DECOLONISING URBAN SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICE AND RESEARCH
This session of TIPC's Open Learning Series explored the connections between colonial legacies, urban infrastructure and transdisciplinary collaboration in the pursuit of more just outcomes in sustainability practice and research. It looked at how historical injustices continue to be entrenched in cities and institutions, shaping day-to-day practices in governance, research, and the lived experiences of marginalised communities.
The discussion introduced alternative conceptual frames and languages to challenge existing structures. We then explored how these perspectives can be introduced into urban planning and sustainability practices to create more equitable outcomes.

Jane Wardani is interested in applying and refining the practice framework for transdisciplinary collaboration developed through her PhD, to enhance effectiveness, innovation and equity in solving global sustainability challenges.
Patience Mguni is an urban scholar focusing on climate resilience, governance and justice in African and Nordic cities, with a particular focus on Nature-based Solutions. She is a member of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network, and a past member of its Steering Group.
Additionally, a commentator from the South Africa TIPC Community (TBD) will provide insights on this topic from a South African perspective and reflections on the work of Jane and Patience.
