Inspiring video! Two "Problems" 1) Obtaining the dense wool like cavalry twill or heavier type and 2) getting the wife to stop quilting to make me one. I can see a little. I do think you would need an upholstery -commercial machine to sew the heavier fabric. Cheers. I'm sure you can obtain high quality Harris Tweed in the UK, but here in the USA not so easy. Cheers and Happy New Year
Hi Lonnie, if anyone could make one you will be able to (a man of your talents). If I can help at all - just email me. Glad you and Connie aren't too shook up after the earth quake.
Ive been brainstorming for a whule on how to make a jacket out of my wool blanket and itnwas turning out into THIS ONE. WOW. Great minds think a like eh? Hahaha😂
My family used to make their own jumpers out of sheep 🐑 wool . But they would spen the wool natural, keeping the oil in the wool. Great jumpers. From Mayo Ireland 🇮🇪
When I made mine I sacrificed an old jumper as my pattern and made my smock over my jumper so it became an inner layer. that said I had to add a strip at the bottom as it was too short. I like it.
Good day to you sir. I first watched Lonny's video and he mentioned this video. So I watched it and went out today and bought that pattern. I'm looking forward to making one of those. You did an amazing job! I noticed that Mors Kochanski was wearing one of yours in that picture. Congrats on supporting one of the greats. You must be honoured? Thank you for this great video. It was very well made - especially the short intermission clips. Keep up the good work!
Nice job .......I made many my self whit wool blanket I sown them by hand the stitch over and under ..the same stitches that we used to made Blankets socks
Oh yes i have seen Simon's Smock making video. That thing looked epic. And it was just a wool blanket. I'll have to search for just the right wool blanket. Mabe Dutch army one. I think that is 100% wool.
Nice video again neil , love the wool jacket , had a wool blanket stashed for a couple of years but never really liked the designs on how to , now you've given me some good ideas for a more modern take on the smock. Keep up the good work .
Loving the jacket, just on hoods... I roll my hoods inside out (just like the SAS smock) that way you don’t get the “flop” and you get a high collar as required. Thanks again, awesome vid.
Excellent vid! Now I know what to buy my daughter for Christmas - a pattern and a blanket! Seriously though, a great idea. I like natural, rustle free clothing for the outdoor life. I'll be trying one of these garments in the near future.
Been on the lookout for a decent pattern, thanks Neil. I think I'll practice getting the fit and details right using fabric scraps, so I won't be wasting the good stuff.
Excellent video I have a lester river one which I’m on my fourth winter with expensive because I had to have a custom size made and shipped to the uk but worth every penny I wish my old nan was still here she was a demon with the sewing machine 👍🏻
Just subbed you mate. Nice easy style of presentation.Have some nice wool, need to dye it somehow, heard wool is tricky to dye . Also , you are the first UA-camr that I have seen that actually replies to all the comments. Respect for doing that to you.
I try to ( but fail quite often!). It is very difficult to juggle making the content, a full time job, family, etc, and I only have a couple of thousand following me. It must be nearly impossible for the guys with a larger following.
Holy handicrafts Batman! I shudder to think of the monstrosity I would put together if I tried this and the little woman would have to move out for all the swearing I would be doing. Excellent outdoor garment there Neil.
Nice work Neil! And thanks for the shout out! I love the versatility of your jacket - some ideas for modifying mine a bit - I’m definitely going to add ventile panels (and a new hood - thanks again for the pattern!) can I ask where you get your ventile from? Atb mate, Simon
Inspiring! You are a talented man! I like your designs far better than any I have seen so far by far. One question though - When you sewed the non wool material to the wool material did you have to use a "walking foot" (what it's called in the States), on your sewing machine? I know when sewing all wool material one does.
Neal, do you have a link for the video of the gentleman you said has instructions on how to make one of these. I would be very interested in trying to make one myself. Thank you again for a reply.
Wool is perfect keeps you warm dry but also keeps you cool and temperature regulated and is also anti bacterial it truly is a great material 👍🏻

Looks like you do some awesome work. I have long been envious of those type wool garments. Guess I just need get busy and make me one.

That's the best homemade smock I've seen.

This is a very good explanation. I love both of those garments! I'm almost convinced to try it myself.
Great bit of kit. Could you pleeeeeaaase do a tutorial vid - especially how you overlay the cotton parts. Thanks Neil.
Just the type of project for those long winter evenings! Thanks Neill and ATB - Marc-Belgium
A fine project for the winter nights my friend. Thanks for commenting

I've just binged watched about a dozen of these videos, and your pattern is by far the best so far... very cool.
That's a really nice wool jacket you've made there, and with Ventile on the shoulders.
Thanks for commenting my friend
Excellent craftmanship!
Nicely done. I'm happy I came across your channel. Looking forward to giving this a try.
Thanks Jim, glad to have you on board. Pull up a log and have a look around the other videos.
You make me want to have a go at making something now! I'll have to borrow my mum's sewing machine.
Great video as ever Neil.
Alan , you really need to getting making one - you'll thank me for it.
Really informative and inspiring video mate , nice one, I'm deffo go have a go at making A bushcraft smock after watching this . Thanks
Wow, I'm impressed! You make me want to make one and learn how to sew. Thanks
Thank you very much for this video.

Thanks again, awesome vid.
I also got some Danish wool at home, cannot miss that layer in the cold winter days. :)
They are the best blankets I have come across. Thanks for commenting
Great stuff Neil, you're a dab hand with that sewing machine. Your projects are great inspiration for a penny-pincher like myself
Get making then lad - and let me know how you get on!!
Excellent vid! Now I know what to buy my daughter for Christmas - a pattern and a blanket!

Good point, those blankets are getting scarce and you don't want to be wasting any.
Now I just need you to send me a jacket. Enjoyed the video and very nice job on the jacket. Be blessed
I think there is a queue!!! Thanks for commenting buddy
Thanks for posting and pushing to make my own.
DO IT!!! its really rewarding and it kicks against the fabric of our consumerist society - so you will be a rebel too!!!
I watch this video as a reference from another channel they said you did the best video on
smocks.
Very nice!
Top work as always Neil with great features
Admire your skills mate. You're obviously a skilled tailor...Cheers.
Brave and talented.

Give it a go mate! Its a good "rainy day project" and I bet you get a few of them!
Thanks for taking the time to comment Vinnie.
Almost makes me wish I lived in a colder climate, almost, though you've sold me on learning how to use a sewing machine.
Thanks Roman. That's the idea, hopefully this inspires folks to have a go.
Some good advice there buddy thank you very much
No worries my friend. Thanks for commenting!!
Very nice. I'm not that good with needles so I'll pass but very interesting.
Really enjoyed this video Neil & I will be having a go at making one or two of those for myself, that has inspired me to, cheers 👍
And in Canada the Boreal Mountain Anoraks. They make wool and canvas anoraks. Yours looks great as a custom designed should.
Yes, theirs look great (I just looked them up) , nice design and quality construction. Thanks for enlightening me.
Excellent. Thank you for this video. Subscribed.
Takes some serious talent to turn a blanket in to what could easily pass for a commercial product.
With a bit of practice, and attention to detail, most people could do it mate. I am not that clever.
Awesome vid. Cheers mate
Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend.
Love your channel!!
Thank you my friend. Feel free to tell all of your mates about it too!
Nice work Neil! And thanks for the shout out! I love the versatility of your jacket - some ideas for modifying mine a bit - I’m definitely going to add ventile panels (and a new hood - thanks again for the pattern!) can I ask where you get your ventile from? Atb mate, Simon
Check your Messenger account mate, I have sent you details of my "secret source" (the fabric elves of Kashmir!!!). Atb Neil
What a great looking jacket! I would easily throw few hundred euros for a similar one my size.
Love the smock, and it's a great project, sadly not one I'll be trying without 40 wool blankets to cover my mistakes :D
I'm sure you wouldn't need that many!! Give it a go mate - its a great little project for the winter.
Came here from far north Bush craft. .
That's awesome work. You could be a professional tailor.
great video you now have another subscription thank you .
Very good movie!
Nice , very nice
Awesome video! Nice work! Yours looks allot Better than mine lol! Thanks for sharing and stay blessed
Thank you Buddy, hope all is good with you.
Just subscribed would you sell that coat lol I love it
Looks pro.
Do you backpack with the smock? If so, do you pack it inside or attach somewhere on your pack?
Well impressed with the Smock 👌🏻 new sub
Thanks for the sub and remember to let others know about the channel.
What method did you use to make your sleeves detachable? Snaps?
@@ensignsoah5947 Snaps and 40mm velcro. Have fun!
Very inspirational Neil! Thank you, one day I will buy a sewing machine and it will be your fault 😅
Perhaps I should have a playlist called "MAN SEWING - FOR REAL MEN!" - What do you think??
@@greencraft4783 haha definitely! At least we wouldn't feel womanly! Not that there are many sewing nowdays.
Inspiring! You are a talented man! I like your designs far better than any I have seen so far by far.

Thanks for the compliment my friend. Glad you liked the video. I just used the standard foot.
how did you make the removable sleeves? did you use buttons or a zipper?
What do you recommend for UK spring and autumn? Warm is good but what about warm, dry and quiet?
Neal, do you have a link for the video of the gentleman you said has instructions on how to make one of these. I would be very interested in trying to make one myself. Thank you again for a reply.
The guy you want is "simon a bloke in the woods" - he commented above - so he is easy to find.
People like smocks, but since I’m warm/hot quite quickly, I’m still wondering why someone would want a smock over a full zippered vest.
Look at the roughstuff products.
Cool..you could make a fortune if you decided to do as a business..
If only I had the time and the supply of blankets!
