My theory: This is a trend I have seen happen whenever SS Rajamouli film has released. The subsequent films released don't really get that audience reception (unless it's an over the top/ massy film with huge stars). For a brief period, audience only wants to watch grand films on the screen.

The main reason why Ante Sundaraniki failed was because of continuous releases of big hit movies like Major, Vikram, F3. Also RRR and Kgf 2 left many audiences wanting for huge budgeted movies, hence the movie did not have many audience. Also the ticket prices in Telugu states were reduced compared to other movies, hence the collections were pretty low. However, the movie is still considered as a great film by Telugu speaking audience. In the past too movies like 1, Orange etc despite being great movies, turned out to be a disaster because they were released due to a bad timing.

There is a scene at the start of the movie where the kids enact a drama about social inequality called 'Tholi Adugu'. Everyone in the school claps their hands and go back to their normal lives forgetting the message from the drama they just saw. Even real life is the same. As much as the people claim to be modern, we just cannot let go of our preconceived notions.

Ante Sundaraniki is a one of a kind film.... this can be said because how the director shows the story, the screenplay and the characters and the feelings around it very beautifully. The charm of nani and nazriya's chemistry with him was really good. The comedy wasn't forced but just came out organically, you could feel the humor and enjoy it, and even when nani and character spoke fast it made the movie more interesting and by the second half ending, the movie was in such a state u wanted to know what is going to happen next which is sign of a really good film. The romance brewing slowly throughout the film not only between the leads but over all was also goood. One of the most amazing things I loved about it was how the director chose to take its time and give the child actors some space and create it in such a way that it always adds essence to the story and the child actors aren't just left as some prop for a flashback. Talking about the songs Entha Chitram and Thandananandha were the soulful melodies, other songs may not be so much memorable or enjoyable when you listen to them as a single but they gave a great impression and mesmerized the movie with it!!
One of the other things which I loved was how the director chose to display the film considering the run time being 2h 53m which some may consider a risky move.
Now why this film may have been a flop or had underperformed (based on what I saw in Hyderabad) because of saturation of films and the cost of the films considering this was a family film.

I think the reason is that the craze of Vikram in Telugu states was quite unexpected. People thought it would become a good dubbed movie after its release, but no one expected the case of kgf 1 repeating itself again. Due to this the theatre count for nani's movie reduced. IMO, the film didn't fail due to the content or direction. Telugu audience always encouraged good romcoms. Likes of Nani/Devarakonda got their initial stardom through well made romcoms. I believe, the main issue for this movie not to work is High ticket prices in Telugu states, Effect of RRR ( Larger than life films), Nani's acting in such romcoms. He is a brilliant actor but in recent times, his acting seems to be the same especially in romcoms which isn't pulling audience to theatres.

How the director dealt with interfaith love, covering every single person's perspective is commendable. I was filled with extreme joy and satisfaction at the end of the movie while leaving the theatre. When I watched, theatre was jam packed and there were good laughs. I didn't know till now that this movie didn't perform well. One reason I could think of is conservative people, mainly such parents, may not like this core concept of interfaith marriage and children lying to parents.

ah mann, can't tell you how good this makes me feel. Might sound exaggerating when I say I had goosebumps watching your review. I felt like someone heard me finally and resonated with every single aspect I loved about this gem of a movie. The screenplay and the design of the direction, are truly masterclass. Beginning from the titles, the director worked so hard with the detailing and nuances which just blew my mind especially when we realize how much thought is put into even the slightest of the details. I have no clue why it didn't work with the audience and I don't care at this point. However, I wish directors like him are not discouraged and producers still give these talents a chance.
Last but not least, I hated Joseph's character too and that's the brilliance of the actor hidden inside the skin of a director. Did you notice why Atreya named him 'Joseph'?

But the anxiety that this movie has put me through in the second half, it is something that might not drive me to watch again and again. He nails every scene and has a high relatability factor and when coupled with such a power house talent like nazriya 🤗, amazing to see she has retained her charm after so long such a joy to see her back on screens. Only wish she continues to give us such good roles, would be a big loss if she goes back to anonymity, she has superlative talent and screen presence that elevates nani's performance too. Movie is thoroughly entertaining and the success factor how they have easily blended social issues with entertainment. So many to point out here where to begin? The issues the boy faces in his childhood to the problems the girls face the moment they reach 'marriage age' shows the suffocation Indians live with on a daily basis. I had stopped watching the movie in between but thanks to JP, saw this gem now and thoroughly loved it 💜

No mystery, I can tell the reason. After watching RRR, KGF, VIKRAM, akhanda audience are looking for movies similar kind . They need some or all below
    1. Big scale
    2. illogical fights
    3. Elevations
    4. Stupid songs
    5. Lengthy punch dialogues
    6. Comedy
    7. Most importantly no lag.
You got to know why Akhanda was hit and Ante Sundharaniki was flop?
Main reason was audience felt lag especially extended childhood scenes and repeated scenes (though director trimmed very well those scenes but still), but that feeling they carried out entire movie. Nani going against govt (Jagan) and calling PK for function is also a reason.

There could be many reasons for a film not working at the box office no point digging that out, however my observation is maybe there was a lot of content at that time, example f3, major, Vikram so maybe the audience wanted to take a break from movies.

I think 🤔 you may love them, watch all Shekar kammula movies( Anand, Godavari, Happy days, fidaa, leader, love story, life is beautiful they are Telugu movies) all of them are gems. I think you will love them. Andala Rakshasi, Virata Parvam, Needhi Naadhi oka Katha, and Anta sundaraniki directors Vivek Athreya's previous films( Brochevaravaru raa, Mental madhilo) and many more if you like them. You can ask for more recommendations I have suggested only Telugu movies but there are gems in Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam.

I loved the movie. The movie grows on you from the moment you start watching. Each character so well written. Beautiful!

A factor to consider here is that, with the massive successes of RRR,KGF 2 and Vikram within months of each other, the audience naturally weren't interested to go to a smaller film. It's like the small drizzle after a storm.
Plus many just didn't have the money to go to the theatres

The case was different as this wast the last Telugu films in a string of films that released one after other.RRR,Kgf,F3,Major,Vikram and most people lost interest as it was the case with me as I watched all above movies.I coundnt spend more for ante sudaraniki.I think films releasing in August will pick up pace again

I have a strong feeling that it would have a Bollywood remake and would be a hit in Bollywood.
