Your lesson content is ALWAYS relevant and useful. Thanks again.
My pleasure!!
Love this lesson, exactly what I needed :) plus you sound so good. You are a great teacher, straight to the point. Thank you! ♡
I appreciate that and I'm so glad to hear that this is what you needed:)
Another great lesson. Love the homage to Max Roach!
Oh you caught that? That makes me happy:)
Your the best yet another teaching by the Q master of traps one day I’m going to tell you a story of me helping( carrying) Max’s snare drum into the count Basie theater in Red Bank NJ from his Cadillac yes Max would be proud of this video he’s smiling on you and probably learned something from it as always a true student of improving on what he called his four limb Monster friend / his drum set! Thks again Quincy!
Wow! I'd love to hear that story someday. Thanks for your support Mr. White!
Man that playing at the start though!!
Thanks Matt!
Another amazing lesson. Thanks, Q! Future lesson request: a lesson on how you approach playing the heads of jazz tunes--dynamics, orchestration, melody. I haven't found much on this topic online.
Best jazz instruction channel
You’re too kind☺️
Every lesson is gold, thank you!
Glad you think so Mansur!
For an idea, you should release a pdf where you write some comping etudes in 3/4, kinda like you did with the latest comping video. I’d buy that in a heartbeat. Not enough jazz Waltz lessons out there
2:08 That may be "Over the Waves" not Brahms if I'm correct, but the starting of the melody is somewhat resembling to Brahms Op.39-15. George Lewis used to play it in New Orleans style.
Thank you! You may be right about that!
Very good ! Your lessons and playbacks helps me a lot ❤❤
you can maybe do a lesson about soloing in a 3/4
Hey Quincy the hi hat played off the and of two is what we dance band drummers referred to as "Old Tyme Waltz Time" Among the many music genre' i've played is that music with a Fiddle band. And the dancers respond but stepping on the down beat -1 and twirling on -4. Many of the modern waltzes were played with the kick and hat played together and the snare doing 1 and 3 & 4... this is common in Country music in 3/4 time. So now our Jazz quartet has added a Jazz waltz to our program and i'm getting in lots of snare and ride accents all the while staying in time. There are others in UA-cam that make it seem complicated. You as always, simplify things for all drummers. Never miss your Vids .
Thanks for sharing the Old Tyme Waltz Time! And I appreciate you STICKING with my channel Davey🙏🏾
Golden.
THANK YOU, this lesson is very well done (you start from the base and build up progressivly), I DO appreciate your will to explain.
In addition, you stay so flexible within the rythm structrure, it's a groove pleasure.
Let me thank you again for your video ! (some/too many tutos on Utube are disapointing, my day is enlighted with you tuto!)
Glad it was helpful and I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!
Great lesson - thank you. REQUEST for future lesson: playing fast up tempo ride, such as Cherokee... Some building blocks to get there?
Great suggestion Eric! It's on the list.
You are amazing man!! Professional 😀!!
Thank you so much John!
Excellent, thanks.
Great Video, as always, Quincy !!!!
I might be crazy... but with all due respect, I think you meant to say the “& of 1” for the hi hat and snare (not the “& of 2). You were playing the “&” just before beat 2. : )
Anyway, great stuff... thanks for all of the wonderful content. Much appreciated : )
You are totally correct! Thanks for pointing it out and thanks for watching!
That last part is so cool. As always a great video!!
Thank you Rob!
Beautifull M Davis !! THANK YOU !!!
My pleasure Malek!
Another Great Lesson!
I teach my students to phrase in six
so they are playing over the bar
Other teachers have told me that in crazy
The and of two is very close to how the Germans play their waltz. Like quarter notes
Awesome Manuel. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you sir. Very helpful. Picked up a Christmas gig which if full of swing Waltz so trying to quickly get that feel back into shape. Not a muscle I use very much in my normal playing, but I love it. Thanks for some useful ideas.
Glad you found the lesson helpful!
Non drummer, but long time fan your lessons never the less. What is the groove or back beat that you tend to feel when playing in three? In four, some people feel it in two as ONE two THREE four or one TWO three FOUR. Do you feel three as ONE two AND three ONE two AND three (dotted quarters)? Do you feel it as a two bar phrase ONE two three one two three ONE two three one two three? Just curious, hope I am explaining this right as a non drummer :) Great video!
Great question. I feel it different ways depending on where the music is telling me to feel it. Thanks for your question and for watching!
Do you recommend playing the hi-hat with your heel? I've always been playing the hi-hat pedal with my toes. Do you think it's worth changing?
Heel up on the hi hats is the way to really play with a strong pocket and groove. I use heel down for ballads or sometimes. Great question Ben!
@@drumqtips Thanks for the response! I definitely know what you mean when you say heel up makes for a deep groove. I've been playing with big bands for a few years and I've found that it gives the strongest 2 and 4.
Do you ever use heating protection? I always feel like I should, but I think it fools my ears and so forth...
I only use hearing protection when I'm teaching and need to listen to students play for me in my office.
maybe this is a stupid question, but one interesting thing I noticed when you introduced the left hand and started introducing syncopation on it, you almost never played a snare on the 1. Is there any particular reason why or is that simply your style of playing? Maybe it's not in the true fashion of waltz and I just don't know?
Good observation! There's no real reason other than 1 tends to be placed on the bass drum to help give a strong anchoring feeling on that beat.
Hey Quincy... why didn't you reply to my question on your video published on March 29, 2021?
Hi Stephanie. Sorry about that. Hard to keep up with all of the comments. I'll check it out now:)
Quincy, is this 3/4 time ?
Yes sir!
Pure imagination, Locke n Keezer....
Great recording!!
Great introduction, but you mean the and of one, Not the and of to!
Woops! Thanks for catching that Florian:)
