Sometimes I entertain myself in my head while out walking. Other times my memory haunts me...say if I remember something I regret saying to someone. Then my anxious tick starts.

Required Particular I thought I was the only one who did that. I make up stories in my head to entertain me. Sometimes I’ll be listening to music and I’ll pretend they are singing it or imagine something that goes along with the song. So much time can pass that way. Which can be a blessing and a curse, especially if you’re on a bus and you missed your stop because you were too invested in your thinking. But yeah that one time you did that one embarrassing thing. Ugh. Buggers.

I have a different experience actually. I seem to have virtually no memory before 5 years old and huge gaps in my memory of my life. I just remember small snippets here and there but my memory is mostly blank. My theory is that because of my Aspergers, I was perhaps "shut down" at those times because I did not know how to cope so did not retain those memories. I have never run this theory by any professionals though. Why do you think I seem to have big chunks of memory missing?

I’m a recently diagnosed Aspie (only took me 34 years to get diagnosed lol) and I identified so much with just about everything you said!! I have terrible short term memory but insanely good long term with some things. One example is when I’m writing, suddenly a word I’ve “never heard” pops into my head and when I look it up, it means exactly what I’m trying to say with whatever I’m writing. What I’ve come to suspect is it’s like you said, I’m always recording, and everything gets stored in my long term memory until I need it. But it’s not all available to me on cue. I remember conversations from when I was young, my phone number, friend’s phone numbers, etc. but I will forget so much of what someone says to me in the moment. I don’t know how it all works either but I appreciate you making these videos!!!

I've always thought that I remember conversations verbatim because it allows me to review any parts that I didn't understand at a later time. I also find I remember more of a conversation when I'm afraid that I'll make the person I'm talking to angry by misinterpreting something they say.

My autistic son (almost five years old) is constantly amazing me at the details he remembers. A lot of times it's when we're in the car and a visual will trigger a very specific memory that he'll blurt out. Before he even had any words he would get agitated when in the car and we took a turn where we normally wouldn't. It baffled me how he could have such a great sense of where we were!
It's not always easy to understand from my perspective but it certainly fascinates me. Thanks for your insight! :)

I can recall things in my head if I have seen it and there are colors or images present.

Vincentville I could always see angles and patterns in carpet designs and floors and I was six but I had none of the mathematical language to describe it (bisecting angles, adjacent, alternate interior), they formed lines in the ground and I could play the “don’t step on lava” game even on plain floors. Internally I kinda thought this was OCD ish in my teenage years. Professor grandin describes this as visual pattern thinkers.

I have a terrible memory and my mind rejects numbers. I have very poor visual memory supposedly. Dates and times confuse me and cause a lot of distress. I have written my name wrong. Written my phone number wrong. And I told them I was 21 because I forgot I'm 33. I used to have childhood memories in senses rather than pictures but I lost most of that.

This past June I was visiting my parents, we ended up driving on a highway that we normally didn’t take (it was on the opposite side of a city than where we go to, never have a need). It felt very familiar to me, and I sat and puzzled why for about five minutes, and recalled that we had driven that highway in that direction coming back from a trip from somewhere even farther in that direction once... twenty five years ago (I must have been seven or six at the time). Kinda freaked me out that I could have such a vivid memory of something so mundane so long ago at such a young age.

I was just diagnosed with Asperger's, and I can remember things from when I was 2 or 3, but I often have trouble remembering something my wife said to me 5 minutes ago.
My favorite movie, currently, is Batman Begins. I rewatch it over and over. Also Star Trek movies and TV shows as well as the original Star Wars trilogy are high on my favorites list.
I've always been a big fan of comic books and science fiction - with Star Trek and Star Wars as my personal favs. And I have always loved Batman, ever since I was a little kid watching the Batman TV show staring Adam West.
I'm also a big fan of Lord of the Rings. I also enjoy the fantasy genre as well. Which is probably why I used to love playing Dungeons & Dragons when I was a kid.

I can remember the key points in everything I read. Especially statistics etc. Came in handy being a Youth Worker =) I like your videos. Subscribed from Australia.
PS: my memory of conversation or places I have been.. is like a movie playing in my head.. but it's like I'm seeing it with my eyes open and not seeing the room. The colours are richer for me in my memory.

My aspie loved one has very good long term memory. His short term memory is ify . He seems to get
stuck on past memories a lot. He does seem to relive past events and is able to recite everything that was said by all the people. He seems to feel a need to go back in time a lot what is frustrating for the normies around him is he wants to take us all back there with him and tries to force us to listen to his account of
the same events over and over.

I can remember being six months old, laying on couch, staring at x-mass tree lights and dozing off. I remember how the colors blurred together and also thinking how I was wondering when someone would come in and pick me up. I knew that I could not walk yet. I remember even my thoughts on that occasion.

Cat Whisperer I remember a thing that happened when I was about four or five. I was riding on the bottom of the shopping cart cause I was a difficult little turd😂 well anyways my father was pushing the cart and I was touching the ground... My father reprimanded me for doing this, and I waited for him to look away and did it again, and as it happened I got my thumb run over. Needless to say my thumb is fine, but Darnit that hurt. Looking back I admit I was at fault but it was freaking hilarious to me now.

That's funny. It must be something significant to us that registers these memories in our brains. I laughed when you said it was your thumb, because I hurt my thumb at about three years old. Playing with a bike in the garage and my dad just got done telling me to leave it alone, also.

Love your videos. So glad to see someone with Asperger's make a video on it! I have OCD really bad and my husband has Asperger's so we can both relate SO much to your videos! It has really meant a lot to him to see your videos because he had a really terrible past and was rejected by friends and family due to his Asperger's. It wasn't until 2016 that he was diagnosed and realized why people had made fun of him all his life for being "different".

When I was younger and corrected adults recollection of events/conversations etc...I was told I was a liar (I guess it made them look foolish) and was denigrated for it. I learned to stop doing it. I found dissociation instead. I envy your generation-aspergers and autism aren't punishable personality traits now. I worked (support) with young primary age Aspies (1-2-1) and now realise why I understood them so well; I've never had an official diagnosis-i really don't need one, way too late now to be of any use. But my memory for names, dates, lists, anything visual in my head- is shot. Short term is crap and I also have big issues with long term recall now due to concurrent (and possibly derivative) mental health difficulties. It's good to see you so positive; keep spreading the word. ☮️

I am not diagnosed but I meet about 85 to 90 percent of traits that I've been diligently researching for some self identity. I am currently in my 3rd semester of community college pursing a degree in psychology. One of the biggest struggles that I have is not knowing how to study to retain information. Everything you describe in this video describes me. I still make A's in classes that highly interest me. Biology still interests me in many ways, but there are many parts like the different types of bonds and all that good stuff that is less interesting to me because my brain just can't comprehend it into a simpler explanation. Any tips that could help?

Down to colors, smells, music that was playing and details said.He cannot remember the order of daily events like getting dressed then brushing your hair and teeth etc. He cannot memorize multiplication no matter how hard anyone has tried including tutors etc yet he is one of the most intelligent students in his high school. bettyred67 red no problem, I never even knew what it was until I was an adult and I think people should be as aware of it as they are with dyslexia. I'm in my 30s now so maybe they recognise it in schools today but they didn't when I was a kid and I even got private tutoring but it didn't help. I just can't remember numbers, dates, times etc and I couldn't tell the time properly until I was in high school.

I am not diagnosed with Aspergers, but I remember completely random facts or events from years ago, but have no idea what people said a few seconds ago. When someone tells me fetch this and take that upstairs I'll go there and have no idea what I was supposed to do. And if someone asks me things like "Have you already fed the mice?" I have to think of me in the situation of feeding the mice and then check if I find that memory of today. I also really hate history lessons for having to remember every date some radom human did something stupid. I would like to hear your opinion on that. I'm also thinking about telling my mom I would like to get it checked, because then I'd have a reason for all the weird stuff I've done and know I'm not just weird. My mom somehow suspects I might have Aspergers and asked me about it a few times. Any recommendations are hugely appreciated.

@Fires And Flowers that is not it. For example, I have really good memory for facts. Is so easy for me if I am interested. I can read a scientific text once and remember almost everything, but I strugle when I have to memorize dates, names or faces. Or I can be talking to someone about something important, then something interrupts the conversation and when I try to continue, I can not remember what were we talking about

    • @Maius26
      @Maius26 3 роки тому

If you have good visual recall, as most of us have, try to put conversation content into visuals straight away, you may find it easier to recall that way. With dates and so forth visualize the numbers, or create a visual mnemonic for it. Good luck.

I both love and hate my mind. I remember almost everything I see, hear, and smell. Sometimes it comes in handy, especially when I have to clarify something or break up a confusion-based argument between two people. I can use it to impress my friends and family, especially when I draw or recite poetry from memory.
Other times I'm sent into deep depression or anxiety by something troubling I saw when I was three. It doesn't help that it's all photographic, either.
As for my favorite movies, I love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and The Philadelphia Story.

Hmm. I'm kind of like that in a way -- my short term memory IS pretty crappy, but my long term memory is weird. I don't think I ever really forget anything, especially if it's funny (I have a great memory for silliness while the serious stuff tends to escape me) but it's like I only have a handful of memories available at any given time, and I find it difficult to dredge up the memories I need when I need them. Very specific things will pop into my head in a random sort of way but the worst part is that I have no sense of chronology at all. Events seem to organize themselves in my head by similarity, rather than by linear order, so for instance all winters seem to be one winter, and I really have to carefully examine a specific memory to figure out when it actually happened, and most of the time I really can't tell if memory A came before B or vice versa.

Well, great episodic memory can be explained because of your over stimulated mental state, which would help drive info into memory easier. Just as synesthetes have great memory, you max experience something similar.
The reason why a semantic memory may not get stored as easily may be largely due to lack of stimulation with the piece of information. You can change this. So when your mom asks you to get nut milk, just imagine she pours ice cold nut milk all over you right in front of the fridge. And to recall it, think back to the spot in front of the fridge, and you will remember the episode. This way you just turned your semantic memory into episodic.

Fleur & Cas Tudor-Oakley yeah. My idea is that the guy can read and control minds. But the problem is that, since aspergers are extra sensitive, in crowded places he hears everybodies thoughts, and like the noise for many aspies including myself, give him meltdowns. And those meltdowns are expressed in psychic pulses that hurt the other people. He uses pills to lower his brain activity, so his powers only work voluntarily. But the more he uses them, (to read the teachers mind in an exam, for example) , the more his brain activity increases and he starts hearing other thoughts unintentionally. Which is something he's trying to avoid.

My long term memory is phenomenal. I remember conversations I had with people word for word 20+ years ago that everyone has long forgotten, and people can't believe I can regurgitate it. I can also still see the words I've read in books from 20 years ago on the pages of those books. As far as short term memory I have to make to do lists or I'll forget. It also takes me a little longer to process verbal instructions. People often have to repeat it 2-3 times.

This was the video that I decided to subscribe.
I am a writer; i.e. fanfiction mostly fanon; & original fiction too.
My readers all tell me, that my writing is, "like watching a film unfold."
I have always been polite and thanked them for that interesting observation; but, it was not until seeing THIS video of yours, that THAT comment they have often made to me, FINALLY makes ANY sense!
    So, thank you for that.
Also, I have an unusual job too.
And it is that ability to rattle on and on about a WIDE range of topics that makes me very good at what I do. : )
So, while some people may find that having Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, (writing backward) and Dysverbia; (speaking backward) a problem, I never have.
Ever since when as a child, I was a sass, never letting others tell me who or what I was inside; and I don't know what happened when as an Adult, I had just allowed that to happen, time and time again. Tearing at the threads of my human tapestry, as others did their best to unravel me.
So, recently, I have had an eye opening change in my perspective about myself.
See, ever since I could walk and talk, I knew I was 'different.' I 'felt' words, and colors. Some things, IF you even mentioned them, I could even 'taste' them. I got called an 'oddball' a lot. My constant mistake in being too trusting and answering others questions no matter the rudeness of the boundary breaking on THEIR part had become, was my undoing self-esteem wise for a l o n g time, until I went to College and learned differently.
Self- taught how to read by age 4. I learned to write my ABC's and 123's backward first, then front-way's, as I used to call it.
And although I have SEVERE Math Disorder, I had memorized formulas in Algebra just so I could just get halfway through it enough to FINALLY graduate College by (also, I had to in writing) promising the Dean to give him more Sciences to balance out my Degree requirements.
My family made fun of me for even finishing College, as I have done nothing with it, *in their eyes* due to no career path was achieved through it. I don't care, because of my unique *disorders* I was able to take some cool extra courses so I learned a LOT of things most people with only an Associates Degree never get the chance to do. :P
Plus, the College paid for my diagnosis, because I was always running away from Math.
That ANXIETY was SO severe? I got physically ill, EXTREME headaches, and chills and even vertigo,
See, as a child back in the 60's I had a cruel Math Teacher who used to BEAT me and make fun of me, and get the others involved too. So, I always had to deal with the cruel teasing's of others; a lot of people too; peer's and even family picked on me for it, still, I tried to see ANY of it as a cool gift and NOT a disability.
Like, I can see a picture of me at an early age; and suddenly I remember EXACTLY what had occurred before, during and after the photo was taken.
I used to think I was a FREAK, because THAT was how I was labeled as a kid. Constantly told this, you kinda start believing it.
I am also on the High end of the Autistic Spectrum, and I think that is cool too.
Not sure IF I have Asperger's, but, would not be surprised IF this were so; for I can go on and on about A LOT of topics, lol.
From Socrates to Marvel, and don't EVEN get me started on my HP 'Drarry' ship!
Just recently realized I was also Asexual, so THAT has been quite the surprise as well.
Although I have always believed that, 'Label's" were for Soup Cans and NOT Human beings; still, I now understand why they Naturally Occur in our Society.
It assists us in better understanding one another.
Understanding brings about positive changes, and positive changes help us all to evolve into better human beings.
    : )

Like you, my short term memory is garbage, but my long term memory freaks people out. It really takes them back, how clearly I can recall past interactions we've had.

Do you also have it hard to remember conversations but easy to remember places and event that happens there ..
Like a flash I can get my memory back from an event.. like if I walk by a playground then i remember every time i was there and with who and what we did, but can't remember conversations or details ..

What you were talking about in the middle of the video reminds me of a song line from Alkaline Trio's "Steamer Trunk" : '...my short term memory is gone, but my long term's far from dead'. Also I love the term videographic memory.

My favorite movie is Moonlight and it took me until my late 20's/early 30's to remember my mom's birthday.
Also, considering the memory recall with jokes, etc, I will remember something embarrassing I did when I was a teenager and become terribly ashamed all over again. It sucks.

I'm only good at remembering things I care about lol, and my memory really comes in handy there. My memory works like this, if you tell me to do something I will forget it because I tend to space off, but if you tell me something and then change even the slightest detail of the story I will know that you are lieing or that you got it wrong, obviously if 10 years pass I'm not going to remember every detail but quite a good amount. I remember things in images or videos, I'm pretty good with numbers but if I memorize a date I could forget it after a month, depends how interested I am in it.

Great vid! I was diagnosed ADHD/Aspergers at age 40 by both a psychologist and a psychiatrist. The reason for seeking them out being a fairly nasty divorce. You struck a nerve with short term and long term memory. We’ve all heard it said “a memory like a steel trap”. With Asperger’s I found my short term memory is more often like a steel sieve. Additionally, One of the most interesting parts of the syndrome to me is the errant thoughts that pop into my head during a serious conversation. These thoughts may make me a snicker, smile, or smirk inappropriately. This has caused quite a lot of confusion and disdain for conversation in my life. Yet the memories of these times more often than not make me laugh. Thanks for the great content! God bless. Keep up the good work.

I have Aspergers but I also have ADHD and Epilepsy. So one one hand, my memory can be insanely good and I can in detail remember things long term, but then I can also be really forgetful with both short term and retaining information long term since Epilepsy really does affect memory.

as a fellow aspie, I sometimes see things in my head suddenly, or when I'm laying in bed and I use that for inspiration to write or do things. But sometimes I get horror games or movies in my head and I see them in front of me and they don't stop. I can't sleep and I have to outlast them, but every time I close my eyes, I continue playing the horror game and seeing it in front of me.

Yes. Love your videos after just figuring out I have this ASD thing. This is one of the main things I love about this, being able to watch memories, I thought everyone could. They are a double edge sword though, as bad memories are very clear also.

I have forgotten my locker’s passcode WHILE in the process of putting it in. I also have a lot of trouble remembering dates, but for some reason times stick with me. I can usually recall the exact time I get out of bed in the morning (6:08 AM today). It’s odd. I have trouble watching movies, too - I get faces SO mixed up sometimes & I forget things as the movie goes on.

This is very interesting. My son is almost 8 and we've known about his aspergers since he was about 5. He has such a difficult time remembering things I've asked him to do or not to do. But can remember several specific events in detail from years ago. Now it all makes sense. Thanks so much for making these videos.

Hey! I'm really low on spoons today, so this comment just consists of a request. Could you maybe add subtitles to your videos? I dont mean to sound accusing, it's just that I have a problem keeping up with that flood of words and as you know, visuals or in this case text would help a great deal. The video is helpful in that I can finally see that there are other people like me and that my issues don't stem from "not wanting/trying to pay attention".

Yeah, I definitely have videos of memories go through my mind throughout the day. That is probably why it takes me so long to grieve a loss. Since there are people out there who don't think in pictures or videos, it's easier for them to get over something, because they aren't reliving it in a video inside of their mind. I relive past memories quite vividly.

Females always got teased about being able to recall any argument or conversation with their boyfriend at any given second we could replay it verbatim whilst the guy stands there stunned . I was always like “ well I can remember all conversations with purnt near anyone going all the way back as a small child . Plenty of times the person I’m recalling it back to will have no memory of it and I’d always say how do you not remember? Now I understand that NOT everyone can do this . Thank you for your videos so I know I’m not alone in what I’ve gone through for 51 years and being labeled as everything but ASD .
