    The gold electroplating was a cool little extra! I'd recommend shaving down that handle considerably more - the chunky, square handle has got to feel like a nightmare to hold in your hand 😱

    Interesting handle choice there. Almost looks like it’d be fairly uncomfortable to hold. And Thats a very neat way of applying a gold plating!
    Side note, turtle is my favorite recurring character of this series

    I was so with you until the last few minutes. I guess this is more of an art piece than a tool, which is fine, but not for me. You will probably forget more knowledge about crafting and restoration than I'll ever know, so I won't pretend to be an expert, but it drives me crazy to watch people put these razor sharp, super delicate bevels on cleavers like they're a paring knife. And to go through all that work and leave the handle a massive rectangle? It seems like you've got some pretty big hands so maybe it works for you, but man that ending was so anticlimactic.

      Yeah I’ve seen a few of these videos and he tends to make the handles big and bulky, which I find very unsatisfying. Amazing work pretty much everywhere else but those handles always frustrate me lol

    • @temporal_paradox
      @temporal_paradox 2 роки тому +15

      I can understand the inappropriate bevel to play up the sharpness for UA-cam, but there's no excuse for that godawful block of wood for a handle.

      I agree but at the same time it probably takes almost a week to complete and it'll probably be very fustrating to use a small handle then it breaks And it probably fits him best so at the same time I disagree with you😵

  • @Scott_G
    @Scott_G 3 роки тому +4

    What is that crusty stuff that came off when it was put in the oil?

    • @CatalystRestorations
      @CatalystRestorations 3 роки тому

      That is an oxidation layer that was formed during the heating of the steel. Also called 'scale'. It's very brittle and tends to flake off during quenching. Perfectly normal but not something you'd ever want to leave on the steel for a knife like this. You can wrap the blade in steel foil or use an inert gas furnace to minimize oxidation during heat treatments.

    • @Scott_G
      @Scott_G 3 роки тому

      @@CatalystRestorations That's cool! Thanks for answering! And the quenching is to soften or harden the steel? Cool it slow to make it softer and cool it fast to harden it?

    • @CatalystRestorations
      @CatalystRestorations 3 роки тому

      @@Scott_G It technically depends on what type of steel you are dealing with, but in general the faster you cool (quench) the harder the steel. Quenched steel is usually very brittle though (good strength, but can't absorb a lot of energy before breaking, AKA material toughness ), so after quenching you usually heat it back up again (lower temperature this time, called tempering) to soften it up just a bit to keep most of the strength but also improve the toughness and give you the best of both worlds!

    • @Scott_G
      @Scott_G 3 роки тому

      @@CatalystRestorations Wow, that's so much more complicated than I ever thought it would be. Thanks again for the explaination. :)

    I watch these before going to bed. Much like a bedtime story for adults with a happy ending! This inspires me to try my hand at this, before actually learning how to forge and make my own knives and swords someday. I kinda cringed when I saw the thickness of the tang being inserted into the block of wood! But apparently it must have worked in the past as it's not broken beforehand. Not sure how to ergos of the handle are? Great editing, humor and love your explanations for everything!
