    As someone who grow up in Europe I can confirm that my parents did teach me how to handle tools and let me be creative and all, at home while they were supervising me themselves. And also let me play alone with my friends, in safe places. Like that's why you have parents.... they let you have fun, but also only let you do dangerous things if they can make sure you're gonna be fine.

    • @mhgb1333

      You have amazing parents then! Balancing safety and childhood interest/curiosity.
      Although, the ones you need to look out for are so-called Helicopter Parents. The guardians who are understandably concerned for childhood safety, but don't let their children go until the kids are of a workable age.

    Adventure playgrounds is just a throwback to the days in the city when there were no playgrounds. We played wherever we could. Sometimes it was junkyards, others it may have been an abandoned building. It spurred my imagination and creativity. Sure, I got cuts and bruises, but that was, indeed, part of the learning process.

But to be serious, when I was a kid (about 20 years ago) there was a playground like this in Albany in the Bay area, was the funnest playground I had ever been to hands down. The whole thing was complete chaos and creativity, I'm glad to see some people are trying to keep them alive.

    This is actually really amazing. Having kids go out and physically build things for FUN is really invaluable as they grow up. The spatial reasoning, the intuitive sense of physics you get, even the warnings to be careful with nails and hammers -- the experience is worth the risk of a tetanus shot, and most kids that age are already protected by the tdap shots they got as babies. As long as the parents are careful and attentive, I think the biggest risk is a future penchant for minecraft

    One the one hand, this seems really dangerous and feels like a roundabout way to avoid actually spending time making something for the kids. On the other hand, if there was some sort of oversight, maybe some available medics and teachers, we might be able to make this somehow work to furnish the kids' creativity.
    There's GOT to be some middle ground between "never let your kids see the light of day and vacuum seal them every night" and "just leave their asses in a junkyard with tools and see what happens."

      i've been to conferences on adventure playgrounds and there is way more involved than he describes. for instance, there are people trained to be there with the kids, helping them out, and minimizing hazards. there's also careful curation of the materials and tools onsite. but then this isn't a news show, it's a comedy show. they're going to talk about what they need to talk about to make the joke.

    As a kid, I loved building things out of scrap. It was a challenge -- and I learned a lot about engineering principles like leverage and force and balance and material strength that wouldn't have made sense if I tried to read a book about it at 10 years old. Is there danger? Sure, kids can be hurt. It sounds like they have trained first-aid available on site, though, and kids heal much better than adults (or even teenagers). And they learn from their mistakes more than they learn from their accomplishments, because they learn limits. As long as the kids are (1) supervised, and (2) cooperating towards a goal instead of hitting each other with hammers ... this looks like an extremely cost-effective way to get kids interested in creating things, instead of destroying them.

      Daniel Budney Thank you for saying that. I'm not from the USA, but over in Germany we built wood houses (of course supervised) at our kindergarden. Kids aren't too stupid to handle a hammer... Not with 11 and not with 8.
      And making your childrens environment to "safe"/"clean"/etc. will hurt them in the end.

    • @youruke2123
      @youruke2123 6 років тому +21

      Daniel Budney Putting the old wood on fire, gives the kids the wrong ideas though. They should be thought to handle the materials with respect. And to be responsible.

      I think I will call this "Neo-Curling movement".
      Feels like these parents know better, but believe that instead of a protective shield (being a wannabe curling parent), they would want their kids to get into dangerous environments because they never got the chance to do so (and also because it is not "cool" to be a curling parent). I grew up in a ghetto...not the safest place, and in my vacations as a child I lived around building metals and stone, that could easily gut a child and played around in rooftops.....would not recommend it, does honestly not help out in anything, only thing you learn, is that glass can easily hurt you for a long ass time and with a lot of blood+hospitals.

  • @imaginareality

    I work at a kindergarten in Germany and our kids built a climbing frame themselves (out of wooden planks and pallets). We also have a workshop where they can hammer and saw and make swords out of wood, for example. You just need to establish some safety rules and supervise them and then it's fine.
    Also, this was really funny.

    When I was a kid, we got to build two storey playhouses at my after school center (with supervision and help). It was one of the best experiences I've had as a kid and it helps in our motor development and teaches us hove to build and create things. And it helps them, when they grow up, that they know how tools work and aren't afraid to start a project.

    I used to spend time in a place like this and today im a plant mechanic and software engineer. Its amazing what can be achived when children are allowed to develop by themselves instead of being developed by overzealous parents to be something they might not even want to be.
    And yes if you're not paying attention you might step on a nail which is no big thing - if you're living in a country with universal healthcare.

    I remember going to camp, and building forts in the woods with the guidance and assistance of our supervisors. It was really fun and one of the best times I spent as a child AND no one got tetanus! crazy, right? there were 3 different factions, each with their fort, and we ended up starting to trade nails for pieces of art (generally wooden name plates or just paint splattered on wooden planks) because we used nails to play stump, so they ended up being kind of a scarce resource.

    I remember growing up in San Francisco, we had some enormous multistory wooden jungle gyms. They were massive like an enchanted forest that a child can explore and find new things each time. Sure, they had dangers such as splinters, rotting wood, and worn and missing parts. But these risks added to their magical nature that they were full of hidden risks and wonder. (The ones in Chinatown were the best.)
    Then by the late 90’s/early 2000’s the biggest of these were torn down and replaced with tiny metal ones only up to two levels that I believe didn’t even reach one story. They couldn’t hold a whole schoolyard and were no fun, so I stopped playing outside.
    Many of these were in turn replaced by these awful exercise machines a few years ago, that don’t even allow for fall risks.
    Older generations always rebuke kids for always being on their phones and not playing outside, exercising or interacting in person. What and where do they have to do that?

    I was six when my parents moved to the house on the edge of a new development. We raided the construction sites for scrap wood and nails and stuff, OK they weren't always scraps, and take our parents tools and build forts out in the woods. Our parents didn't care and not a single one of them ever asked to go see our handiwork. As I grew up the developments kept spreading farther and farther into the woods mowing down one section after another and laying out streets. We would just keep riding our bikes farther and rebuilding our forts.

    when i was a kid we had normal playgrounds with big swings, big slides, an insane metal climbing structure and kid powered merry go rounds made of steel and wood. we had big sand filled areas that weren’t covered after we played in them. there was an asphalt surfaced area for some activities and a big grass area for sports and whatever else. sometimes kids took a fall. sometimes it was just a scrape and every once in a while there’d be a broken bone (i only remember it happening twice).
    now we were an adventurous bunch of semi delinquent kids and when we got out of school we looked for trouble and built forts in the ground and up in trees. none of it was supervised and we really weren’t supposed to be doing 80% of what we were doing. when we stepped on a nail we got patched up and would get a tetanus shot. then we’d get our asses whooped by the old man because we were obviously pulling shit we weren’t supposed to be getting into.
    so what was the result? we had a perception of what was right and wrong and we had the ability to choose which way we were gonna go.
    the extremes by which kids for the past 20 years or so have been raised has consequences. i think those consequences are easily apparent.
    -just observations from a man who tends to pay attention to everything.

    I grew up with adventure parks and they are awesome. I don't know how it works in America but we were instructed to 'play' it save and were supervised by adults. I can't think of a single accident in all those years.
    We also learned DIY stuff in primary school, working with wood, saws and hammers building our own stuff. It might be the reason why I still love DIY, being introduced to me at a young age.
    A kid in my class got cut in the eye with paper. Did our parents banned us kids from using paper? I rather see kids playing outside, learning useful skills and using their imagination than them being locked in a room with their online 'friends' playing video games.
    American parents need to loosen up.

    There's a time and place for everything. There should be a time for kids to play and to learn to build things. But to let kids "play" with tools in an area where other kids are also "playing" to build stuff doesn't seem like a good idea to me, I mean look at that place!! You're going to tell me kids are so responsible to not let hazardous things around?
    If I wanted my kid to learn to build stuff then he can do it at home, invite his friends if he wants. With so many kids in one place and then with tools the control and safety is difficult to maintain and then you're just begging for accidents.

    Could they at least setup an "Adventure Hospital" next to the "Adventure Playground"? Or get some "Adventure Doctors" on site just in case if kids suffer from major injury. Yeah, I don't care if the kids get hurt too Ronnie, they aren't my kids, but at least give them a proper coverage on medical supplies so that they can access it asap when shit happens.
    A country with parents leaving kids unsupervised when they work with real hammers, saws and nails, that's the kind of place where you truly need a gun at every turn. From what I have seen in the video, kids under supervision from ANY DECENT HUMAN BEING should not be hammering himself in the head with a hammer even if he wears a helmet. If that is considered to be safe, why not trying to ram his head with a chunk of wood? Why are those parents standing there, watching the cameraman filming the whole process without stopping the kid? God bless America, perhaps they really need all natural water to make them smart again.
    Just in case, perhaps it's time, I would like to propose the following motion:
    Get some celebrities setting up a "Save America from Dumbness" Foundation and get it fund now.
    America kids need proper education from sex education to so many other issues. It's time to "make America smart again". MASA sounds like NASA and definitely a smart option.

    • @TuhinNahid
      @TuhinNahid 6 років тому +1

      It'd be great if there are just "Adventure med-kits" so the kids can apply for themselves or suffer the consequences. The human mind when under panic and uncertainty can do wonders when it comes to growth or acclimation. They may struggle at first, but when they try working with the bandages more than they can get themselves hurt, they'll definitely manage to get it right.

    • @Papershire
      @Papershire 6 років тому +4

    • @Leo_Lionhart
      @Leo_Lionhart 6 років тому +1

      Tuhin Nahid I would have agreed with you, but the adventure-playground doesn't have an adventure guard on-site to secure the adventure med-kit. Who could guarantee the med-kit is properly refilled/stocked after someone used/stole the supplies from it (hey, people are stealing unanswered package from your door in public view, what will happen to a med-kit lying in a public playground?) ? If it is properly managed, yeah, let the kids go play with the adventure med-kit, what could possibly gone wrong? (btw, have you seen a video of a kid applied a band-aid without cleansing the wound at all and continued playing while the wound was still bleeding? Oh wait, my bad, I saw it in real-life)
      So, adventure med-kit, will that really be the best answer to fix the adventure playground? I hope you see those problems there and come up with a better solution.

      Leo Lionhurt - When did your obsession with securing every single little risk (of what? Stelling into a nail? Hitting your finger with a hammer?) more important than letting kids be kids? Let me guess, you were raised in glass jar and this is why you don't seem to handle a personal insult very well. Correct? Replying to "you're a indiot"with 6 lines (!) of peronal rant is stupid. You're an indiot sir (see, I called you "sir").
      _"So, let me bring up that insanely persona of mine and write you the suiting reply for a person like you."_
      Yeah, split personality? And you think you can tell someone character by a UA-cam comment? That says a lot more about you than about the other, sir. Grow up and get a life Mr Snowflake.

    • @Leo_Lionhart
      @Leo_Lionhart 6 років тому

      Bruce Lansberg yeah Leo Lionhurt, you must be raised in a glass jar. I raise my kids in the dumpsite and eat trash (I happen to know someone like that; does she enjoy it? No). That's how you raise kids. Hitting your finger is nothing, you need to get puncture with a nail in the forehead (Did I meet someone who suffers from similar injury? Yes. Did he enjoy learning that lesson with a permanent scar in the face? No). Let kids be kids and fall in the sewage drain even if they are about to, that's what we should do (Did I witness a kid chasing a ball across the road and stop him from being run down by a taxi? I did that once). Handling personal insult should be taken in the face (Did I do something embarrassing and get mocked in front of others? Yes).
      I see. Well, if you had to reply to something that is not for you, I guess you are just another crisis actor who pretends to be the victim. You can call out more names, that just shows which of us is truly the emotionally unstable and intellectually impotent individual. Stay civilized is not something you can do when you meet anyone with an opposing opinion. Like a racist, sexist or a Nazi. Go ahead and say more. Do call out more names. I appreciate your effort if you can keep on replying for a month and repeat the name calling process, the harsher the better. The only point in my rant is to make it clear, you stay polite and civilized in replying to any comments. You can't read it, that's your problem. And yeah, not every bit of safety measure should be taken at all time. Kids need to suffer and get hurt from time to time. The only difference in our ideology is that, I focus on the possible death prevention measures; you don't and you focus on mentioning minor injuries. Kids do need to be kids, but if you must insist in letting them getting harm from irreversible wounds, perhaps that's cool to you and your friends, seeing kids died and suffered from severe injuries like losing a limb, months of coma, infection that could paralyze their body, yeah, if that's the kind of injury you like to see them suffering, argue more. I can totally understand your psychotic desire of wanting to hurt people in every humanly ways possible. We all read about those people in history, all the time. Also, you are addressing the wrong person. Who is this Lionhurt? Anger and rage blind humanity. Obviously, like Alex Jones, he can't even tell Jordan Klepper from Jordan "Keppler", you are pretty much the same. You are losing sanity.
      Now if I may be excused, perhaps it's time for you to setup spring traps and razorblades in the adventure playground just to achieve your goals: letting kids get hurt and suffer, let them learn through pain. Go do your thing, I am just going to read more books on saving lives and treating wounds. I should be re-applying for the first aid course and get ready to treat kids you have hurt. I am going to study the laws that will allow law enforcers legally take you down and stop your endless attacks on the kids and children who don't deserve to suffer permanent injuries that could affect their life. That's where we stand. That's how I will solve your distress.

    i'd like to point out that this is a comedy show, not a news show. they only mention the things they need to for the joke.
    so the fact that adventure playgrounds are carefully curated before the kids even get there and they have trained staff on hand to work with the kids and keep hazards to a minimum isn't mentioned. it is admittedly VERY hippie, and i prefer a slightly different method myself (this from someone who teaches elementary school kids power tools), but don't take this video as accurate reporting.

    I appreciate what these playgrounds are trying to do, I grew up in a way where I had some exposure to risky things, but it wasn't so forced. I learned how to be safe while enjoying normal activities with adults who could teach me how to do them safely. I got hurt occasionally, but not often. There is value in real, tactile learning and genuine, direct experience as part of an education. But I wish our society was better at doing these things naturally instead of just manufacturing artificial routines that tick boxes but fail to really nourish us.
