one thing i remember about playing Need for Speed: Underground 2 on the lowest settings is that it completely disables the rain, not only the visual effect but also the changes in the way your car handles on wet terrain, arguably making the game easier

One of the hardest speedruns in The crew 2 is on a event called "New York", The world record for this event was beaten by literally installing a graphic extension to lower the graphics to a bare minimum.
wouldn't that be considered cheating since it modifies game files?
@@tsumetai_kaze it was controversial but the only purpose of the lower graphics was to hide bushes and breakable trees to ease in shortcuts

This video is perfectly timed. We are at a point where it's hard to impress people with high end visuals. Cutting back graphical power and using that money elsewhere would make a big difference.
Also as I get older, visual clarity is super important. On the rare occasion where I play a big budget triple A game, I don't think "Wow, these graphics are amazing!", I think "Wow, I can't see! What am I supposed to be looking at?"

I have thought about this a lot and it's really true that high settings don't always look the best. I usually play minecraft specifically at the lowest possible settings because it feels cosier and right to me, despite having a powerful gaming PC. And your channel is definitely something i'm going to keep an eye on for a while, i loved this video.
I always turn down a lot of graphics settings because I see no reason to make it harder on the computer, and as a programmer actually just a computer nerd and a half. I love going through settings because I know how and why these settings do what they do; hell, I even do this when playing on a game console where developers really know what hardware they are working with because, like I said, I simply see no reason to make it harder on the computer, and wow, I really am a computer nerd.

Minecraft really has the best options for this kinda thing. For the longest time I played with some 8x8 (i think it was called paper cutout) pack and it was preddy as hell. Vibes man. Vibes.

Ah! You made me feel so good! A few days back I was talking to one of my siblings and he said "The Graphics ain't good enough" when I talked about playing GTA San Andreas! I was SHOCKED! I still enjoy Low Graphics games on my High end PC! Sometimes much more than my modern games!

8:30 low spec NFS! I was 9 when we got a purple Compaq Presario sans GPU in 2000. Bizzarely, it came packed woth with a ton of EA games, nearly all of which I had to play on the lowest spec. High Stakes was my favorite because of how detailed the cars remained- I couldnt figure out why Porsche Unleashed’s cars were made to look so bad!
PC came with Sim City 3000 Unlimited (my username is the exe file name), Tiger Woods 2001 and the rest which required low spec: NFS Hot Pursuit, High Stakes and Porsche Unleashed, plus Triple Play 2001, Madden 2000 and NBA Live 2000.
im glad you're getting positive feedback and views from this but can i acknowledge how absolutely silly it is for there to be a 10 minute video essay on the "understated beauty" of low graphics settings
also weird how its almost exactly 10 minutes (but i doubt that was actually intentional)
Source Engine games on low models/textures setting + mat_filtertextures 0. Turns it crunchy, like modern retraux shooters.
Others use low graphics settings to not get distracted by the realisim, able to focus more on enemy's.
Me:use low graphics settings because I am desperate to get the game to run at 1 fps (and the main menu)
all I want is a PC that I can play Minecraft at max settings with that doesn't tank the FPS
